- Thank you for all of your well wishes over the last couple of weeks about Derek's knee operation 🦵
He's found it very comforting hearing so many people wanting him back fit and fighting ❤️
Here he gives us an update on how it went, how he's doing now, and how long he has to wait to drive again...
Speedy recovery Derek I'm on the waiting list for mine
Wishing you a speedy recovery Derek,
Glad you’re on the mend Derek
thank you 🙏
Had two knees done. As Derek says, despite the pain and restrictions, it's worth it in the end. All the best Derek .
they can only operate once on each knee. if it fails or gets damaged, then you could be in trouble . You end up in a wheelchair
@@vincentl.9469 Rubbish. You get a knee "revision" in which they replace the failed artificial knee. Granted, this is a lot more complicated than the first one but you don't end up in a wheelchair.
@@alanhunter2009 ..but that must depend on how old you are and your bone health ? the idea is it lasts until death, though it dont always work that way ...
I'm 3 weeks post hip operation also on the NHS who were brilliant and I'm recovering well. Good luck Derek.
My partner has two metal knees and a replacement left hip as I have. We both climbed up a steep ladder into a narrow cockpit of the Vulcan XH558 at Robin Hood airport a few days ago. All on the NHS. You'll be changing gear in no time Derek. Good man!
Very best wishes to Derek for his continued recovery and thanks so much for all the fun and sane good sense I get from Mathewsons and from the channel. Everyone I've seen there remind me that there is still so much fun and a lot of quiet virtue in the world.
nice words
thank you very much 😃
Hope you feel steadier, stronger and better each day.
Glad to see Derek is up and about. My father had that & it was 5 weeks before he was well enough to come home. You just need to keep up with the exercise & keep moving. 😀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
glad your dad has had his knee sorted Alexandra
Glad you're on the mend Derek take it easy till your better
cheers Denis
WE need you Derek , get well soon

2 years waiting for a knee op ...........You were lucky, I was waiting 3 years than date of op it was cancelled because of COVID.......4 years L8R still waiting 🤕
Glad to see that you are getting better and back on your feet Derek take care and stay lucky and healthy 👍
Glad you are getting better, thanks for the update. Wishing you a speedy recovery Derek 😊
Thanks so much
Can’t keep us old buggers down Derek. Had my hip done last December. Knee starting to play up a bit so like you I won’t mess about. Love watching you guys so genuine. Keep going mi8 👍
Get well soon Derek..
Well done Derek. I know so many people who have had new knees and all recovered well afterwards. So much depends on your mentality though and how you deal with pain. The only way is up now. Good to see you looking so well. Take care Derek 🙂
Glad you are back 🎉
Just stick with it Derek. The pain will go away as long as you do what the doctors and nurses tell you. My Dad had both knees done and really altered his quality of life 😊
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I really enjoy your videos keep them coming ..
Thank you very much!
Hi Derek. My old man has had both of his done and he said the best advice you can have is do the exercises they have given you and they will heal better. I know I will have to have mine done in the future, changing the timing belt on an Astra today has reminded me of that.
Good to see you back Derek, take care.
Thats really good news to hear indeed. I was worried about him . silly i know but you kind of get to know and like our TV folk etc. glad he's on the mend
Not silly at all. Haven't met Derek or the family, but you can tell what a really lovely family they are, so naturally you and many would be concerned 🥰
thank you thats very kind
Great to see you are doing well after your operation Mr Mathewson. Wishing you a speedy and full recovery. Tea and biscuits aid this. 🙂
Dear Derek,
I am having two Titanium pins taken out in December [six weeks no driving] and when that heals up I am also having a new knee same as you.
When my tibia was broken twelve and halve years ago [when a car broadsided me on a cycle - his fault] I had the two pins put in, and because of the knee damage at the time arthritis has moved in big time. I'll be sixty-three when the pins are removed.
Get well quickly!
Best wishes from George in Herefordshire.
cheers George all the best for your procedure 👍
Derek what a great bloke you are, could listen to you all day and thanks to all the Mathewsons team for keeping us entertained
Bless you Derek, sorry you are in discomfort still, but it's good to see you back. We were worried about you 🥰
Thanks so much 😃
@@DTMathewsons 🥰🥰
Hope your up and driving soon all the best Derek .
Thanks 👍
We've got so much in common Derek. I lived in Bedford for my teenage years and worked at the Ford garage Bedfordshire Autocar on the Broadway. I drove around Bedford in a Reliant Regal 3/25 when I was 16. My dad wouldn't let me have a motorbike. He bought me a mk 1 Cortina 1200 when I was 17 which I passed my test in. My few mates and me used to go to the Addison Centre in Kempston to see the groups play there. Now in my early 70's I need a left knee replacement. All the years of loving and driving car has maybe contributed to that. Take care.
Are you going to Rustival?
Had my knee done 10 years ago. Virtually no pain after. Just a bit sore for a week or two. Best thing I ever had done
hoping for the same here!
Hope and pray all going be ok with you Derek. You take good care of yourself.
Thanks for this video
And the update
Get well soon Derek!
good to see back and the mend 👍
Glad you are on the mend, the pain does go slowly, so it is worth doing I had my left one done two years ago and i am getting my right one done next month so hopefully should be pain free in the knee department very soon. keep up the good work on the channel,
thanks Jim, all the best for your op next month
All the best Derek
All the best Derek 👍👍
Nice to see and here about your operation I am 18 months waiting for my new knee so anytime soon I will also be at the Nuffield when the time comes yes we no there be pain and discomfort but the end result will be worth my partner has had both her knees done so I've first hand experience of it. The driving will drive me nuts too take care ❤
thank you and hopefully you manage to have your op soon 🙏
I had my left knee replaced last Christmas and enjoyed it so much, I'm having the other one done, this year....Derek's right, it does hurt but at least 8:30 you know it's
getting better not worse....drove after 3 weeks gave one stick away after a week, to an older lady who was struggling with hers.
glad you're on the mend Stuart all the best with having your other knee done
All the best ol' buddy!
Get well soon my friend
All the very best mate,
thanks John!
Well done Derek.
Hope Vicky 's looking after you ,hope feeling better soon
God speed Derek 👍
All the best
all the best, lovely family, local to me
cheers Craig
Waited 2 years for new hip like you say can be painful but go and get it done
Came up to Thornton last week from Suffolk, obviously missed you but walked over to Pickering and luckily met with Dave & Jack who were just loading up a Escort ( possibly a Mexico?)
Pulled Jack's leg that I saw him giving it a caning leaving the estate, he took it all as a joke. It was going to same Rally Driving hot shot ( he was there)!
With the job I did, was off work for 3months, 2 knees, the second one got in on a cancellation, as working on crutches, it does hurt 😮, but so wonderful not to have pain
glad you're all sorted now!
Had one done 4 years ago bit of a long drag to recover you do need to do the excercises in and out in one day nhs
Derek good to see you up and about i have had both knees and a left hip had my right knee done in 2008 i was 55 yr old then my left one and both knee caps done in 2011 and been on strong pain relief since cat neel down the pain is so bad apparently you have an 80% chance you will be ok
I was in the 20% bunch but hey ho never mind with out your channel life would be boring
sorry to hear you're still in pain Douglas, keep going mate 👍
Good look Derek.😎👍
Got my knee done ten weeks ago , getting the other one done in six months but you have to keep up with the exercises
hope your next op all goes well!
I had no idea of Dereks recent surgery . But there's no way he's going to hangs his boots up ! I spoke with an old work colleague yesterday . Sadly his wife didn't have a happy ending .
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. If one day of doing nothing helped to progress your recovery then it might be a good investment to have a couple more rest days - they might bring forward relief from pain.
My love from Scotland derek 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Praise da Lordy Lord you is ok 💓💓
Glad it's gone well for you , I wasn't so lucky , I had mine done 2 years ago and still got lots of pain and can onl just about get 90 degrees bend , my surgeon say I've been one of the unlucky ones .
sorry to hear that Peter
Not to worry , just one of those things , there's lots of people worse off than me , cheers 👍
What mileage on that knee Derek? Get well soon
As they say Derik, it can always be worse. It could’ve been me anyway. Hope this makes you laugh. I spotted you outside cleaning the windows if you’re struggling drop me a message and I’ll pop up and do it for you get well soon😂
Glad you've had it done, I had mine done when I was 47 and I've never looked back! In a few weeks you'll be like a spring chicken running round all over the place!!
hoping so!
so was it knee cap amd is there pins in there
Glad to see you recovering ok 👍
Good luck Derek, bet there was some tools used you've never come cross before.
Love to know the history of the green white and gold scania in the background
Glad your doing well Derek, just remember let the youngsters push the cars as you have done your time 😅
6 Weeks not driving is no that bad. I had an epileptic fit a few years ago and couldn't drive for a year, so my wife was my chauffeur for that time.
hope you're doing well now!
I had two last year, don’t rush, best thing to do get a toilet raised seat.
You are going to set off the security metal detector alarms when trying to enter Whitby or Scarborough.
All the best from down under Derek, no I can't see up your trouser leg, not that I want to, apart from anything else I'd have better taste anyway!! You look really really pale hope that picks up. Keep taking the blood thinners if they gave you any, or daily fish oil 1500 mg for at least three months. Your biggest enemy is blood clotting, so you're right to keep moving and wrong to get back into any long distance driving at least without taking a break to exercise. So boys it's up to you, don't let the old bxxxxr out driving on his own for too long, or too far. No more than two hours in any direction with at least one break in the middle each way. One of those car massage seats wouldn't hurt either. Glad you're feeling better Derek, make sure you keep heading in the right direction. 🙃🙃🙃🙃
thanks mate onwards and upwards now on the mend 👍
Would like to see more motorcycles especially early ones 1920's and 30's British
my uncle drove before he should and he messed it up,it's not worth it for the sake of getting behind the wheel to drive.
Not sure why I'm interested in someone's operation who I don't know. But I am 😄
IM 87 so must be 1 in a million and Suppose you must have had some other trouble besidess wear and tear
.As with both of mine, just wear no complication and was walking the same day as op ,walking from then on one stick,.had one op Januaryy which was so good so had the other in Septemberr that year .Admittedley i paid Nuffieldd to do them and would recommend them at Derby as for pain minimall
glad yours all went well 🙌
Derek did they take your cap off when you went down for the operation 😂
it's glued to his head 😂
Get back to the wheels as soon as you can glad you are doing OK
No way he has had a full knee replacement and working already .... im 12 weeks in and still struggling
I wish Derek all the best in his recovery but it's a warning. Your hips & knees should last for life. They reason they don''t is because we are all overweight. One of the reasons the NHS is struggling, knee ops especially. It's wasn't invented to deal with self inflicted issues like this. Stop the processed food and get a bike, which are great for good knees.
I understand your principles of not wanting to pay, bearing in mind the money you must have put into the system over the years. However, suggest small charitable contribution to maybe a local hospice or Macmillan Nurses. Rich man, eye of a needle, gates of heaven and all that.
Medical advice was six weeks. Take it. You don't want another operation to correct what your impatience has ruined.
Those knees have pushed a lot of pedals
All the best with recovery
Then back to pushing pedals 😂
Did they let you keep your money Elton on
How much did your Dad's Yaris sell for Jack?
it didn't sell this time round
My friend is on the knee op waiting list Derek, and you could afford to go private easily, so you have gone way down in my estimation of a person who should know better, quite shameful I think.
Get well soon Derek
