Looks like it works the same way as a Sperry F3. Basically a free-floating gyro-stabilised sphere. Usable in any orientation. Very confusing to interpret if you're used to conventional artificial horizons. The plane that crashed killing Buddy Holly and the others had a Sperry F3.
