Renton, Seattle police warn of suspects staging car accidents, then carjacking victims

Police departments in Seattle and Renton are warning drivers of a trend where staged vehicle accidents are used to carjack victims.
Renton police say there has been an increase in staged vehicle accidents where the at-fault driver then goes on to carjack the victims.
"We see this kind of thing periodically, once every year or two we'll have a similar occurrence there where there's some kind of ruse to get somebody to stop and then they're robbed at gunpoint," said Renton Police Detective Robert Onishi.

I’m gonna be real with you. This is insane. Especially with the restrictions and restraints on cops being able to do anything. You expect me to let them just take my car, be out of a car, my car insurance probably won’t fully cover the theft, wait for the cops to find my car, insurance won’t be able to cover all of the damage potentially done, insurance will only cover so far, I’m being encouraged by police to do nothing and let myself be robbed, and to NOT defend myself. Or. I could stand my ground, criminals are a cowardly lot and when faced with a good person who is willing to stand up to them, they tend to flee. This is insanity. You’re advocating for me to let this happen to me. Put myself through terrible financial circumstances all while a criminal can just get away with it.
