🕊Perfect dumpling and as the oldest of 6 children, I made them just like this, without CofC Soup, to feed our family of 8. Nourished us well. Same with beans & cornbread. I was cooking and sewing before I began school! Now at 72, I continue to love these tasty basic “survival” meals! 🥰🕊🙏🏻

As the oldest of 5, I share similar memories. Growing up on a farm, when Mama fried a chicken, she made both dumplings and gravy along with biscuits for sopping. She used the same recipe for biscuits. Just saved some of the dough to roll out for her dumplings. I'm sure wishing I could sit at her table for supper tonight. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

@@roseschrader4917 Hi Rose! My 1914 Mom from Ark- she used flour water salt and rolled on cornstarch. May I ask for your c&d recipe? I was adopted and b1966, didn't get a chance to write her recipe down. All I recall is a whole bodied chicken boiled up, taken off the bone. Get the broth boiling to drop the "sinker" dumplings into. She did use a drop of egg shade food coloring to finish up. This is all I can remember.

My grandmother made chicken and dumplings that were so good, you couldn't push away from table until you were in pain. The problem was that she had no recipe, she did everything by eye, from memory. My mother and my sister tried for years to duplicate her dumplings but were never successful. I saw my mother's notes on making dumplings that she made from watching grandmother make them. I started making them per my mother's notes. Chicken and dumplings are comfort food and I knew my grandmother didn't use low-fat, low calorie, health conscience anything. I made my dumplings with a mind's eye toward the dumplings as "comfort food" and my mother and sister began asking me how to make my dumplings. "Mom, they are from your recipe." I would tell her. It turns out that they didn't exactly follow their own notes. My mother didn't like dark meat chicken so she only used white meat. My sister would extract ALL of the fat from the broth. They made so many changes that their dumplings didn't taste like grandmother's dumplings. Well, imagine that, change nearly every aspect of a recipe and the end product doesn't taste the same. Of course they know more about cooking than I will ever hope to know so I can't tell them anything.

My granny used to keep the dumplings in long strips and made alot of them, made a big mess of them in her heavy duty soup pot(I still have one like hers), whatever she couldn't fit in the pot she would bake on a cookie sheet with butter and cinnamon sugar, a real treat for us grandkids 🥰🥰🥰great memories, I come from a big family and so mom and granny had to cook in big quantities, that's when the soup pot was used quite often, love brussel sprouts too

Love it any way it's cooked.

@@CollardValleyCooks they were a variety of sizes which was okay for me. I used the fork..."like momma used to do" : ) in your very own voice. LoL
I love those stories. My granny had a farm, live stock & we definitely we blessed to live off the land in Mississippi. May she rest be peaceful

These are the best! This is how my MIL makes them, but I’ve yet to perfect the way she makes them. I still try though, and they’re still good!

What a great recipe. I have made your buttermilk biscuits, your creamed corn, your "canned" green beans, your cornbread, your fried cabbage and now your chicken and dumplings. Every recipe was easy to follow and produced rave reviews from my family, including my 89 year old Mother!

I live in California where brussel sprouts are grown. We fry the sprouts so they brown and sweeten. (Fry with bacon, brown them, put on lid, finish with some steaming. Like you would cook cabbage.

I have a brussel sprouts recipe too . Shredded brussel sprouts . Fry bacon that has been cut into tiny very small strip or cubes in olive oil . Add shredded sprouts along with chopped garlic, salt and black pepper to taste. Turn the heat down and keep sterling until the sprouts are cooked . It's a game changer 😃🥰

Looks just like what Grammy Sarrett taught me to make. I never heard of putting yellow food coloring in, but I heard that Jewish mamas put the chickens feet in the pot, that's how they got theirs yellow!
Grammy and I just did it like y'all do tho.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
