Thanks for the reminder of what Power Football looks like.
Check out the holding by michigan on one of Johnsons long runs. They tackled the right side if our line
The O-line is so impressive. Will those days return?
Michigan's tradition of great offensive lines is why I signed to play at Michigan in 1989. My four years playing O- line I think we were the best in the country my whole time @ U of M. GO BLUE 4 EVER.
16:25 Fun Fact: the Hawkeye that gets lit up by Corwin Brown is the former acting Attorney General.
didn't you have this game previously up with the radio audio?
Iowa had Michigan on the ropes in the first half, if only for a moment though. I still can't help but think that this might've been a different game had Hayden not made that boneheaded call on the disastrous fake punt. I think if we succeed (instead of having the punter rush it, how about a real exotic) or just punt it away it changes the dynamics of the game.
That said Michigan was clearly better on that day and I won't take a thing away from them. Once we made that bad call they went right for our throat and pounded us into the turf. That's what a winner does. Desmond Howard was the big concern but damn if Michigan didn't have a powerful ground game and our defense ended the season ranked #1 in the conference so that's a real testament to the Michigan offense that they just ran right over us. Oh and Desmond got his 2 TDs too.
This game still hurts but hats off to Michigan.
rwalfrey If not for that call, I still like our chances with Desmond and an offense that averaged nearly 40 points a game.
WolverineHistorian I agree. With an offense like that you have to feel quite confident when confronted with adversity and virtually any game situation.
The importance of that call going our way would be to keep the advantage at two possessions and thus, hopefully, keep your offense one dimensional and predictable. That's the only way I see us keeping your offense under control. As you correctly pointed out the Wolves had a potent offense. Only one team stopped your offense and they had one of the greatest defenses college football ever saw putting forth one of their best efforts (not even Florida State slowed you down.) As much as people remember Desmond Howard and Elvis Grbac, your ground game a wrecking machine. It didn't matter who was carrying the ball behind that o-line. I felt your ground game was the real key to that offense. We finished with the best defense in the league yet you bulldozed us for 371 yards on the ground for the game and most of it in that 24-6 pasting we endured in that 2nd half.
In fact your ground game was so potent that even a two possession game wouldn't justify abandoning the run game unless it was in the fourth.
