  • Which girth straps should you use? First and last? Second and third? What do all the straps do? Which ones should you use? Aren't they all the same? No, they most definitely are not.
In this video, Poppy Webber looks at the different straps that saddles can have. Some have three, some have four, some even have FIVE. Are all the saddles with three straps the same? What are the extra straps for?
The 'extra' straps should only be use with the guidance of your saddle fitter... so make sure you know if your saddle has any hidden 'extras'... sometimes they're there, without you even knowing!

Thank you, this video has really helped me to look at and understand the straps on my saddle, rather than blindly accepting the 1 & 3 rule.

So interesting to know what all these straps are after so many years of riding!

love the way you worded show pony size haha! i have a very "rotund" cob and thinking of getting a point strap installed on my saddle to help with his extremely forward girth groove (he is fat and in bootcamp)

Hello from Australia, Poppy. You are so funny, I would just like to say thank you, I am 45 and I have always used 1, and 2 I have never been a Dressage rider or what ever lol. But used to riding in a stock. Would you do a video showing this on a horse? 😊

Fantastic video. I have an Arabian with a coward girth groove. If I line up my saddle to the girth groove, the saddle is over the scapula.
Which all purpose saddle brand would you recommend, with a very forward point billet strap? The cheaper the better! Much thanks.

Brilliant video! Thanks for the detailed explanations. Could you possibly address where the girth should fit across the ribcage vs saddles slipping?

The reason I ask is no matter which billets I use, the saddle does not move but the girth itself seems too far back from the traditional girth area by 1/2 - 3/4 of a girth width. I do slide the saddle off his shark fin withers (guess what breed he is??) until it sits in its natural groove/spot and just behind his shoulder blades, but whether its an anatomical girth or straight girth, it still seems kinda far back on his ribcage compared to what I was taught. The billets do hang straight down, but he must be anatomically "gifted" with the geometry of his withers to shoulder blade, to heart girth area. How much play is there in this area? I don't want to hurt the poor guy. He already puts up with my $hitEventersUnite style of riding so I want to make him as comfortable as possible. Thanks!!

If the saddle isn’t moving, don’t worry. We all think the girth needs to sit right into the armpit/elbow but if it’s happier sitting a little bit back then that’s usually ok. If you’re worried, send a pic to your saddle fitter but honestly, I don’t think you need to worry x

My saddle slips to the right all the time, thinking possibly using the balance strap, would I use this on the left side as it slips to right ? Or right and left x 😊

Super informative, thanks! So in the end, we still have to wait for those videos on the point strap and the balance strap haha! :)
I just got a new saddle (wintec) here and was wondering if I should use1&3 or 1&balance. I do a loooot of trails so balancing sounds tempting, but I'll start with 1&3 and see how that fits.

It depends if your first strap is a point strap or a normal first strap - and whether you need the point strap :) complicated eh? :D

Why do dressage saddles tend to have the sliding V thing?

  • @DominikaKnox
    @DominikaKnox Год назад

I wish you would explain why we can’t use 2 and 3 :)) especially on jumping saddle, it seems like it could free the shoulder even little more? No? :) never used it that way but know that some professional showjumpers do use it that way.

Hi would you ever use the balance strap and the last strap next to it? And why would a saddle rise at the back in canter or trott? Xx

I have a collegiate dressage saddle which I don’t use but it seems to only have a point girth strap and a y balance strap at the back. It’s a brand new saddle and wondered if that is normal. I use a very old 40 year old pre kieffer saddle. It has 123 girth points. It fits my horse well but is it too old to be using now? Thanks 😊
