That first bought out was a big mistake. It was down hill after that. To many hands bought and sold that food chain. Very sad !!!! When I was a child my mother always shopped at Grand Union in Elmwood N.J. I remember the stamps my mother collected from them to purchase items in a catalog. Grand Union had the BEST COFFEE CAKE around. Sad that's gone also
I have been with GU from 1973 to the last day of operation as the Grand Union Co, 2/28/2001. I saw the mistakes that were being made, I saw a lot of the stupid waste of money. Like for example ( the monthly price book at the office in the stores ) I don't think I ever saw anyone look at them.
Ames and Grand union shared many plazas up here in Northern New York. Grand union couldn't compete with Price Chopper,Aldi or Wal-Mart or Hannaford it was sad when they closed I liked grand union
I grew up going to Grand Union in upstate NY. I almost lost my new pet mouse in that grocery store, lol. I remember visiting one of the last operating Grand Unions in Northville, NY not long before they were gone for good. I was actually shocked it was even still open at that point. Who thought a pretty much forgotten grocery store could bring back so many memories.
When I was really little my mother had us in an apartment walking distance from Grand Union. The honey bbq Wings in the hot deli section were my lifeblood, i would do anything for them 😂 That's my nostalgic Grand Union memory.
I remember my dad always filling those foil bags with chicken wings and we would eat them while we shopped! Those were the best wings ever!! He’s still trying to recreate those wings to this day… I was around 7-8 at the time, I’m 36 now….. I really hope he can figure the recipe out… he’s still trying to this day lol
I live in the Philadelphia suburbs but got to know Grand Union at their store in Lake Placid, NY. where I took winter vacations to ski. They always had what I needed at reasonable cost. I was sorry to hear they went out of business but based on your video it was just a case of bad business plans and most likely in the latter years being bought by money managers looking to make a fast profit loading the company with debt and then selling out to another company. This is the story of many old established companies that we have lost over the years.
C&S Wholesale Grocers under an affiliate just brought back the Grand Union name as a result of Tops having to divest 12 stores from their merger with Price Chopper. They even came out with a logo, which is a thinned out version of the Red Dot logo. Ironically, four of the stores to be divested were former Grand Unions, so now there's a possibility of them becoming Grand Union yet again!
This will be the fourth changeover for the Owego and Norwich NY stores originally TOPS Then it was P&C Became TOPS again now they will become Grand Union
When I was very little (late 1960s), my mom took me grocery shopping with her at the Syracuse NY Grand Union. I miss it.
Grand Union has come back from the dead list of stores going out of business with 10 Supermarkets in New York and 1 in Rutland, Vermont

yes sir. Its sad that mismanagement usually leads to the downfall of these iconic stores.

Now the nearest TOPS which will be rebranded to Grand Union is in Warrensburg NY.
That is cool, thanks for the heads up.
