Love these old pics. I lived in Vegas from 2001-2002 and since I've moved the changes have been drastic to say the least. I still can't believe the Rio has sunk as low as it has.

I agree with you on the Rio. We ( me and wife and kids ) started going to Vegas n the 80's, so up until around 2000, we always stayed at Excalibur, Circus, MGM, places for the kids. After they moved out, the Rio, Orleans, South Point, was the place for us. Last time we stayed at the Rio was 16 during NASCAR weekend, what a disappointment........

Stayed there in '89, wanted a balcony to enjoy the storm I'd just ridden through on my new Harley. Had a bottle of Jack sent up, watched from the balcony for an hour, went exploring, and discovered the strip was overrun with Dead Heads, selling tie-dye [and anything else] along the streets and even in the meridians, when they still had them. It was full of cowboys as well, as it was Helldorado Days. So my weekend was filled, partying with hippies and cowboys, wearing leather biker gear, lol

I stayed there in 1991 for a trip to the CES trade show. I was only in my 20's and it was my first time on a plane. I'd never really been anywhere, and I'd heard of The Dunes, and seen that iconic sign on TV, so I was pretty pumped. That didn't last long though. I know it was a premium hotel in its day, but by the time I got there it was pretty run down and almost skanky. Our room was really worn-out and old looking. I doubt it had ever been updated since it was built. The guy I went with was also young and was new to travel, and we were really disappointed. I still remember the halls and room were dark and dingy, and the inside of the front door was full of signs warning you about safety and basically how to avoid being robbed. That creeped us out lol. It turned out ok, but the next year we asked for a better hotel ;)

I always hope to see videos taken inside these older casinos so I can recall the slot machines that were prevalent during that time. Probably not a buffalo in sight. I think that was about the time that TITO was starting to be introduced, so there may have still been casino staff running around refilling the coin hoppers. Unfortunately, since photography of any kind was prohibited inside the casino, that history is gone.
