  • Tactical Initial, or Tac Initial, is a very efficient way to get a large number of aircraft into the landing pattern in a short amount of time. Basically, two aircraft will fly to the approach end of the runway at about 1500-2000' above the ground while 3,000 - 4000 feet line-abreast of each other and at a tactical airspeed (300 knots for us). They will then enter the 'break', rapidly slowing while turning 180 degrees and putting the gear/flaps down for landing. Then we will roll off the 'perch' (I think that the Navy calls it the 180) and make a descending 180 degree turn to line up on short final approach and landing.
This is what it looks like from the pilot's seat of a T-38C.
