    Anonymous;Code is the latest visual novel in the science adventure series. 7 years in the making, is it worth waiting for? English localization coming in 2023. Here's our review of the Japanese Nintendo Switch version. From the brilliant twitter.com/Meirin_M

    I think you hit every mark with this review besides the lore point. The whole draw in the game is the amount of lore and recontextualization that this entry does for the rest of the series. It reintroduces and subverts every single mechanic introduced so far in the series as well as explaining all of the questions that the other entries set up.

    I have not played the game but I find it very disappointing that they pandered to people with low attention span, none of the sci fi adventure games stories would have been anywhere near as good if it was not for their deliberate pace.

      I get your comment but Steins was WAY too boring at times, sure it makes for an awesome story and the build up is able to achieve that, but I remember being in pain when reading for hours with barely anything happening (even if those events end up being part of an awesome last chapters).

    Thanks for the review. I absolutely loved Steins;Gate, and I'm half way through Zero ATM, and loving it. I have Darling's Embrace and the Robotics;Notes and Dash double pack, but I haven't read those yet. I'm also looking forward to grabbing Choas;Head Noah when it releases on Switch in October. I'm a little sad this one isn't better. The artwork in Zero is exceptional.

    How can you possibly say this game didnt build on the lore? A huge percentage of it expands and builds on the lore from every previous entry (especially Steins;Gate). People who don't understand what world lines are probably won't understand world layers, let alone all the other bits of lore that tie previous entries together. Hard disagree.

    Im going to pick up the game either way, but I really want to see a video about all of the connections to the other sciadv games. I know you said there weren't many, but it has to have something. I'd also like to see how the story sets up future installments. We all know the avengers style team up against the committee of 300 is coming sooner or later, I just want to see how we are supposed to get there.

    Cross, Wind, and Kaoru were devoid of personality? What??? Yeah they didn't have character development--because they weren't the focus--but they still had tons of charm and personality. I couldn't disagree with that take more. I can understand wanting more from Momo, but I still found her to be very nice.
    The later character you mentioned though... Yeah, they're not great. As for the true end, you should make sure you did all the content. A little bit is optional.

    • @meirinVN
      @meirinVN 2 года назад +1

      A character can have some character development while still not being the focus of the story. Neither Bambi, Ozu nor Graham were really that important to the main events of the plot (well, maybe Ozu had some occasional relevance), but they at least had something, even if it was just a couple of scenes. I don't remember Cross having anything resembling that, Wind's major moment is climbing up a ladder, and all Kaoru has to distinguish himself is saying that silly line. I know I'm slightly exaggerating things, but if you compare this cast to S;G, C;H or R;N I think it's clear that A;C is certainly lacking in this regard.

    • @ChrisGreenLink
      @ChrisGreenLink 2 года назад +1

      @@meirinVN I dunno man, Kaoru had that real nice scene with Oz toward the end where he got genuinely heated. As for Cross and Wind, I just don't think they needed it, same thing with Nonno. I don't think you need development to be a good character; just Cross's presence and his dynamic with Pollon was very enjoyable to me. Wind is also Daru but not obnoxious in any way--really, he's pretty cool. And it's not like the ladder was some huge moment or anything, he's mainly a helping hand.
      And I obviously prefer R;N and S;G's cast, I'd still say everyone (sans Ros and Juno) is good and likeable. (NoAH's and C;C's casts are probably about equal to A;C's in terms of how much I like them.)

    • @meirinVN
      @meirinVN 2 года назад +1

      @@ChrisGreenLink Oh right, I did forget about that Kaoru scene, my bad, yeah that one was pretty good. But that's the thing, I wish the game had more of those. My issue is not that I found the characters dislikable, it's that I thought most of them were forgettable. For example the Pollon-Cross dynamic, yeah there's really nothing that wrong with them, but at the same time I found most of their exchanges to be pretty samey. One jumps into the action right away, while the other is a bit more methodical, but that's about the extent of it. It works, but the game didn't do that much with it.
      Personally I think C;H's cast was stronger, if anything because imo Takumi is an amazing MC (who in a way is the antithesis of that, an extremely dislikeable character that's incredibly memorable). I guess some parts of the script turned out a bit harsher than I thought, but I still enjoyed the game and would recommend it, I just think it's a step below other entries.

    • @ChrisGreenLink
      @ChrisGreenLink 2 года назад +1

      @@meirinVN Oh yeah, Takumi is excellently written, as is the rest of the cast, I just was talking about how much I liked them personality and character-wise, rather than quality.
      And sure, I too would've loved more SoL and nice character moments. But I still feel like the game has a very nice cast of memorable characters in my eyes.
      While it's not my favorite, it's still a great entry, I'd say. Either way, it's an awesome game. Some of the later manga triggers were crazy.
      R;N is still my king though.

      @@Rataldo20 Yes I have played the vn of steins gate, and funny you mention that since the anime is literally a better package all together than the vn.
      Chaos;head Noah which I bet you haven't played given your response (and I'm not talking about the recent official release with the bad translation) far exceeds steins gate in it's character writing, narrative and overall themes. Robotics;Notes Elite, pulls heavy narrative theme's from steins gate and noah and in the end far exceeds steins gate as a story, especially in it's character writing, and becomes on par with chaos head.
      And that's only two other mainline games in SciADV, and they both are objectively more compelling than steins gate.
      Are you sure that you've played those other vn's, or have you just watched their anime adaptations.

      @@kheggz6734 I'm glad you enjoyed Chaos;Head Noah more than Steins;Gate. Power to you. After finishing Chaos;Head Noah just recently (yes, that official English version which seems you criticize) I'd like to say that Steins;Gate has not been dethroned to me. Not by any chance. I've enjoyed Chaos;Head Noah. Very much, indeed, but characters, the story, the main plot, the emotional impact and the conclusion especially do not hold a candle to Steins;Gate. What I personally appreciate the most on Steins;Gate is its adult cast of characters - it is so refreshing to see young adults (18+) instead of overused high-school students saving the world. Chaos;Head Noah is a great VN which I highly recommend to everyone to read, yet Steins;Gate is still the peak of their production to me.
