These teams had nothing to play for in this game. Germany really underperformed at this WC and Argentina should never have made that final. It's also crazy how Italy, Germany and the Netherlands were all in one group, while the other group was much easier.

You are wrong in all accounts. The german team at least had the possibility to reach the 3rd place game. And the reason Germany played in this group was because they played 2 times 0:0 in the group stage. Actually the groups in the 2nd stage had the same quality; the other group also had Brazil and a strong polish team
@@nelsonpenaherrera1769 Poland and Peru were much easier teams. Peru broke apart in that second round. So was Argentina and Brazil did not have their best generation at all. In fact, Brazil was probably cheated out of a final by Argentina in this World Cup. Argentina had not qualified for the World Cup in 1970 and lost by scores of 4-0 to the Netherlands in 1974. And as you mentioned, they also lost their group to Italy. Germany and the Netherlands had one of their strongest teams in the 1970s and the Italian team that emerged in 1978 was strong and had just won their group vs home team Argentina and a strong France side.

But there is no doubt that they had a much better team than Poland, Peru, etc. The 1970s was one of their best generations. I think they threw the Euro 1976 away when they lost in the final on penalties. It's hard to keep up your motivation once you start winning so much. In 1980 they would win the Euro again and make 3 consecutive World Cup finals. They had a very strong team. Maybe motivation was a factor in this World Cup.
