Thank you so much for the translation. I'm happy knowing I finally have a categorization for a style I've long appreciated as well as the historical context delineating the aesthetic through line.

R.I.P Cogecha, his art waas legendary to me, immediately recognizable at a glance. I hope the art he created lives on for a long time to come & inspires others to pursue a similar style.

WOW. This was fantastic. My perspective was blown open to see the complex lineage and trading of techniques and ideas across the world. Really fascinating and a vital part of the discussion when it comes to art. It really is all interconnected, and it’s a disservice to pretend otherwise. Super cool to see how anime fits into this vast web. Makes me appreciate it all much more. I thank the original creators as well as P&S for platforming it.

I'd always found Cogecha's work breathtaking. I'd been exposed to some of the later period woodblock print but I never made the connection between those, the ligne claire style, and then Cogecha. It was rather enlightening to see the lineage of these styles so clearly laid out.
Thanks for sharing this video with us Joe and many thanks as well to the translator and original creator of the video as well!

The more academic direction this channel keeps going in I’m really enjoying. Despite the majority of the video not being yours hope you’re enjoying the creative process of your other videos.

Definitely seen art like Cogecha's before but didn't knew it is the product of art history that date so far back. An entire lifeline evolves from Belgian comics, to woodblock prints, those dang city pop cover art, color tracing in animation and how they still share the same core principle of separating with clear lines. I watch the Forward again after finishing the video and I think you put it well.

A video about something in the doujin world is a miracle.
Anyway, the clear line is something I see so much use in underground Japanese illustration, though I had always associated it with the oekaki style (I guess that's a plausible connection between Clear Line and Otaku Culture)

Very interesting. This general style reminded me of some of the more striking panels from xxxHolic and of the Mononoke anime. Even in the video, there was quite a lot of diversity in ammount of detail and for me it's definitly about balancing it, which Cogecha was great at. Thanks for publishing it, enjoyed it a lot.

Never heard of Cogecha myself. But I really do like that style. Having seen it pop up here and there. Didn't know the history behind it so that was fascinating to watch.
though, in general. As a person who always opt for subs over dubs. There are a few guidelines that I tend to agree with. Like, not having more than two lines on screen at once (not counting translator-notes) and try to not fill the width with text.
But apart from that little niggle. I very much enjoyed this video and I am very interested in seeing more of asian anime fan culture and analyzing.

At the start of the video: Haha having Sparkle in the background is so random
6 minutes later: THAT'S SO FREAKING COOL
This video was great I learned a lot! It answered my age-old question of "Why does Great Pretender look like that?". And I've also been meaning to watch Soda Pop for awhile, so this will definitely enhance my appreciation of it's art and other shows like it going forward!

Offtopic: I guess watching Link Click made me used to the chinese language and now I really like the sound of it. Similar to japanese when it was new to me, but more "sweet".
