Part 2:
• How an MS Paint artist...
In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards interviews an artist using an unlikely tool: MS Paint. Microsoft Paint isn't known as the best artistic tool. But Pat Hines used it to create the illustrations for his horror fantasy, Camp Redblood. And the results are incredible.
He explains how Microsoft Paint works for him, and includes notes about his favorite artists, like Herge, Ivan Bilibin, and more. He also shows why he prefers Paint to Photoshop and Illustrator and how it created his unique artistic style. This speedpaint is a reflection of years of labor.

"Paint is like meditation to me." Right on. My only problem with paint is that when I'm spending hours in it, I seem to stop blinking. And since you can only zoom in to 800%, it's already kind of eye-straining for details. I still love it, though.
That's why most good MS Paint artists work with larger pieces.
Pylades Drunk
wouldent lower desktop resolution solve that issue?
Pylades Drunk SAME I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way!
It's not meditation if you are forgetting to blink... Meditation is about awareness. What you are describing is more like falling asleep... Or just being completely focused, forgeting yourself. Which, again, is not meditation...

This just means that you don't need to buy expensive and luxurious (digital) art materials just to create an exquisite art like this.
Keep MS Paint alive! The unsung hero of Windows.
I draw in real life but I work with colored pencils and it's usually pretty uneven (unsure if it's my paper or my method), so I tried using paint to touch it up and it actually worked pretty well. I've only done it once so far, but I plan to use it more in the future.

I also draw in MS paint a lot. I don't know why, but I enjoy drawing digitally with a mouse. I can go back as many times as I want and redraw a line until it's perfect. Sometimes it make take me a few hours to draw a really detailed picture, but to me, it's worth it. It's the drawing itself that I enjoy, and not so much the end result.
Yes, Vox. Some people use MS Paint.
How does he erase the pink outlines that he drew? Does he do it manually? Or is there a tool to choose specific colors and change them?
Allonso1234 HAN There's a tool specific to MS paint that allows you to only erase a certain color. It won't be anywhere obvious, and there's no name for the tool but you basically just pick the color you want to erase with left click with the eyedropper tool and pick the color you want to replace it with, with right click then you hold down right click with the eraser tool and it will only replace the first color. I found this out from fiddling around and from my days of Pokemon spriting 👍🤗 hope that helps!
Wow Thanks so much!!

In ms paint, there is a thing called Colour 1 and Colour 2. in Colour 1, you chose a colour you want to erase and in colour 2, chose the colour you want to change it. It will only work if you right click or else it like a big line of random colour.

This takes me back! I used to do stuff like this in MS Paint, because I enjoyed the challenge of the limited program. (And because I was too cheap to get Photoshop, or a stylus.) I never did anything nearly this big, but I also worked almost exclusively with a touchpad for awhile. Actually, I was putting most of my stuff up on Deviantart at the time, and I specialized in avatars -- 50 by 50 pixels. It sounds much easier to do something so small, and in a lot of ways it is; but in a lot of other ways it isn't, because you have such a small space to show everything you want to show. There's a huge community of people who do this sort of thing on Deviantart. It's called pixel art, because you're creating it pixel by pixel. Not everyone does it in MS Paint, some people do use Photoshop. But it doesn't matter, because they're still emulating MS Paint. The only thing that Photoshop has that MS Paint doesn't that's useful for pixel art is layers; and as Pat Hines just showed us, there are tons of creative ways to get around a lack of layers. (I used to do the same thing he did here, do a rough sketch, then go over it in a different color; only he keeps the initial sketch even after making the formal lineart and I used to always erase the sketch as soon as the lineart was completed.) I even won an award (a Daily Deviation) for one of my works, an avatar-sized animated coyote howling in the desert. Dang, now I want to open MS Paint up again, lol.
This is really inspiring !!! Never thought of trying anything like this.

Torrent PS cs5.

how
Pxintman Better off torrenting CS6 extended which is closer to PS CC.
Ya'll know that there're tons of free programs that can even be better than PS for specific purposes, right?
Painting:
Medibang, Firealpaca, Gimp
Krita (if you can deal with its fussiness)
Pixel Art:
Graphics Gale, MS Paint (really, ps sux bad for pixelart)
Vector (forever crisp zoom in's) art:
Inkscape, Vectr (more for graphic design)
2D Animation:
Tupi: 2d Magic, Opentoonz
(or anything else over PS's horrible timeline)
Only thing that really shines for photoshop are its color editing and filter abilities, but besides that, you can find programs out there that can do stuff better. Its UI is horrendous (4 keys to shortcut merge layers? 3 to undo??)!
Legally, you can get PS7 for free, because they stopped support. Plenty powerful, still!
Then the image pixelates
Are you talking about JPG? Use PNG or BMP.
I remember using MS Paint for making frames for a .gif image I was working on in Animation Shop, and wondered why each frame kept getting fuzzy. Taught me about JPEG compression. I saved frames in .JPG because I was obsessing over the filesize, even though I could just delete them afterwards.
BMP is pretty much pointless now, with PNG taking its place for lossless images. Pictures with few colors really compress nicely.
GIF using safe colors is what you want to do when saving file size. You're going to be doing GIF for the animation anyway, so might as well create each frame using it.
An artist : create an art from MS Paint

He didn't. He used photoshop for Homestuck. He did use ms paint for snother series at one point though.
Nice to see other people talk about Hergè and Tintin outside of the animated movie. Love those books
That's the power of simplicity. Brilliant.
It doesn't matter if he did it in MS paint or if he would do it in Photoshop or gimp or manga studio. People are different with different programs, some are good at Photoshop, some are good at MS Paint. It's an accomplishment to do good art, even if you do it in a shitty program and it turns out amazing.
Nah, the dude is stuck at a very low level and it's probably because if the program and tools.
Tools do matter in art.
Danny Pavlov Yet you fail to realize that MS Paint has tools that other programs do not offer. Think of it like this, this should not be a comparison between better and worse tools, rather different FIELDS of tools. Example: A person who their art with copic marker, versus one who does it with oil based paint. One of those tools is newer than the other but that does not explicitly make it better than the other. Both have their pros and cons- the same can be said about MSP and other newer art programs. As an artist who's used both I can say that non of the new programs that I've used so far have come with a modifiable eraser that allows the replacement of only one specific color to another specified color. While this is navigable issue of preference that can more or less be solved with layers, alpha lock etc, it's more a matter of preference than anything else. In the end it's about what you feel comfortable using.
"non of the new programs that I've used so far have come with a modifiable eraser that allows the replacement of only one specific color to another specified color"
That's because most programs do have a dedicated "color replacement" tool for that.
The only thing somehow unique to MSpaint I can think of is the "3rd color selection" instead of two like in other programs; but again some programs memorises either a palette or the recently used colors for good workflow without needing that one option. 45° line lock and other stuff like that can be found elswere as well.
As for "being a specialised tool", there's way better pixel-based programs. With GraphicGale becoming freeware there's quite powerful tools aviable for free. This don't make his artwork worse or anything, but I fail at seeing what do MSpaint have that is so special, exept the "mascot" role it gained over the years.

while everyone is saying "rip ms paint"
I'm here using paint . net
This may cause a temporary dip in the meme economy, but there are hundreds of bad digital art programs out there, free.
Paint dot net has an awful interface when you're first getting started with the program though. It's very unfriendly for beginners, to the point where I even found GIMP easier to learn than paint dot net. It's how easy paint is to get into that makes it great, and I haven't yet found a program that can replace it in that regard.
I'd even go as far as to say that paint dot net is the WORST possible choice to replace paint with.
John Green Im using it too sometimes i use paint too
Paint . net has an easy interface for me, but I'm using an older version so thats probably why
I personally use Clip Studio for a lot a my art, but it's often nice to go back to Paint, its layout is very simple, which can be refreshing after more complex programs.
It's also good for a challenge, seeing how you create different elements with such limits.
Everyone says 'It's so hard to use paint', but honestly, even if it's not my 1st choice and it doesn't have smooth brushes, it's still got an 'easy to process' design, that makes it good for everyone, I even have pictures drawn by my probably 6 (or younger) year old self somewhere.
Even if it is simple, there's still little obscure tools in the program that just makes it a little more complex, like holding shift while moving selection.
My point is, Paint in my opinion is better than it appears.

I mean, who's great drawing, will be great drawing with whatever program he has at hand. Paint only gives less tools, but the basics, a pen, a bucket, a eraser, a selector and a zoom tool, are everywhere. The rest is pure, one of the roughest skill
An artist can *capture* the beauty in anything, a talented artist can *create* beauty in anything.
I don't think vox has heard of the Big Lez Show. An entire series made from paint
It’s good art. Just one thing tho. It’s pixel art. If he wants more details he could use other brushes or even simply make the canvas bigger. I personally use only ms paint. And many others use it to. Honestly if you want to see high quality paintings in ms paint just look up ms paint speedpaints. Once you get past the beginner artists that often use the program you can find amazing work that isn’t even made with pixels. But again this guys work is still amazing.
