Is شهور to express months also correct? In this lesson you used أشهر

    • @Teresa_-

We could talk a lot about this topic. I must start by saying that I am not an expert on the subject.
Originally, some Bedouin tribes had a plural form for "إِذَا كَانَ العَدَدُ كَثِيراً" and another plural form for "إِذَا كَانَ العَدَدُ قَلِيلاً". This is the difference between “شُهور” and “أَشْهُر”. The dictionaries say that the plural of the word "month" is both أَشْهُر and شُهُور, but most of them do not give more information. ِ So, let's go to the origin, to the base of the language: القرآن الكريم. In The Koran, the word شهور appears only once, to refer to the number 12 and the word أشهر six times, to refer to the plural of few (from 3 to 9).
That is why the great grammarians say that أشهر should be used for small numbers, and شهور from 10 to infinity. ِ It is a difference as subtle as it is beautiful! But we speakers build the language every day, and sometimes they are used as if they were synonymous, because in many areas both are used without considering the number. What a beautiful language!
