A recommendation for the super poor, and those starting off in life. It is acceptable to buy the cheapest set of tools available, and then replace the tools that break (the ones you actually use) with better quality tools over time.
Amen!!
Words to live by. It’s easy to get sucked into thinking you need what this guy has because he likes it and he’s great at what he does. Your tool collection will grow as you work and realize what you need to be more efficient. And sometimes you get to look back and see that pair of pliers (or whatever) you bought first week on the job and look back and see how far you’ve come
Yep. Bought most of mine 2nd hand. Learned to fix em up, then put them to work, then made them pay for their replacements.
High quality second hand tools can be a much better deal than new tools.
@ThumpingVTwinNYC I got the impression we were providing advice for someone rich in time but poor in cash.
I feel like the cabinet drawers are left open to mess with us haha
Knowing Scott’s general shop activities list, he’s liable to get spark in some of those drawers, hope there aren’t any important documents lol
I can almost guarantee that they prolly just dont close all the way haha
Don't close properly?.. looking at their vintage 😁
I think he leaves them open so he can see what’s in there, because drawers are where tool go to be forgotten
Thinking the same thing hahah
Thanks for everything Scott!!! You have helped me immensely in my carpentry career that started at the same time you started your channel. Your insights and advice has lead me through a rough starting period to a journeyman carpenter today!!!
You have become my favorite person on the net. Learning carpentry, blacksmithing, machining at 38, Skilled enough to do anything but its time to learn to do it right. Thanks for all of your guidance and dedication. I'm not sure your age, but when, I get up there. I hope I can still power through as strong as you.
When I started college in the 70s I purchase a Black and Decker circular saw - new - for $20. All I could afford and used it for years before I had an income that allowed me to upgrade. Made flower boxes for my college apartment and those memories stick with me more than the multiple homes and projects i have built since then. Those were the days - cherish them!
Thank you for your contribution to the craftsman/diy community.
The wide angle shot of your shop at 4.35m was spectacular. A living museum 👏👏👏👏.
Keep up the good work.
Love what you guys do! Thank you for what you to to help others develop skills and improve their skills. You are building a massive legacy which you should be proud of. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Scott! Wow, this video embodies everything I’ve grown to love about this channel and your teaching.
I'm the new guy at work and happen to be able to cut a descent straight line so I'm naturally the cut guy/measure everything/string line and eyeball it guy on a framing crew. Your recommendation of the spencer loggers tape and mag77 skilsaw are my babies now. Thank you for the less stressful and more efficient work days.
It is a pleasure and a privilege to be a recipient of the excellent work you and your team do as you selflessly share your collective knowledge and experience, thank you 🙂
Thanks for all you do. It’s much appreciated. Good to know there are still good people out there.
I have quite a robust collection of tools. Many them are modern and up to date tools. I have a collection of antique carpentry tools from my grandfather. Many of those tools originated from the 1920’s. My father left me his 1972 craftsman 10” table saw. It still cuts true to this very day. It is a very heavy piece of equipment. Not like today’s table saws made of aluminum and plastic and nylon. Because of your channel, I’ve gotten a renewed interest in building again. Thanks for the motivation!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Old tools are great.
Could not help but hear the bagpipes at the start of this video. Beautiful sound. 🏴
I love the pipes in the background! I've been a carpenter for about 20 years, and a Bagpiper for 6 !
New to wood working and just crafting in general. Got a Skil Saw because of you. Thanks for the truly inspiring content.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! You are an awesome Mentor. The value you’re bringing using the venue of RUclips is a “Force Multiplier” - just like the tools you teach about. Don’t stop! What you’re bringing here in these videos can’t be gotten from a book and is likely your greatest contribution to society. Father teaches Son (or Daughter)... I learn something with every new video, including lessons in Grace.
fantastic channel ive been watching for past 3 years and absolutely love and have learned from and am even starting to do the same type of work and recording it and posting it here on youtube and maybe some day ill have accomplished as much as ive seen on this channel. thank you for the inspiration and the effort
In my youth; my small central Wisconsin town was loaded with folks like you. Plain folks that could be called upon to assist in any sort of situation. If one guy didn't have a tool, that other guy would. I always thought that adulthood was going to be so cool; because I would/could be like all those "men"
I just love your channel and the content you provided your viewers and myself. I have learned so much from you in the short time I have been watching. I think you’re series’s on the spec. house is fabulous. I also love when are working in the blacksmith shop.
Cheers
Thank you for the lessons (foremost), and the entertainment as well. I have learned a lot watching your channel and have had opportunity to share that knowledge. Thank you very much.
Love your commentary on tools.
Thanks for filming this.
-Nick 😃👍
Great to see you and the family are safe love the videos by the way as you would say , keep up the good work . From colin in the uk 🇬🇧
Love this channel. Shared it with my dad and he loves it too. Much respect.
Well there goes my weekend watching this amazing channel
I too love tools. In particular well made older tools. But every now in then I look around my workshop and think wow I wish I had all the money back that I have sitting here 😂 but then I reassure myself that I need that tool and one day soon I will pick it up use it again.
what a great idea. nice to be able to find tools you need. Good bless
Love the bagpipes in the background
I love the instagram name choice! It seems so obvious, yet so creative! Almost like you planned it from the start.
Thank you for all your information that you pass on.
Like the bagpipes in the background have seen the world championship in Glasgow a few times well worth the effort i hope we all get back there soon. Keep your self safe.
"Craftsman Essentials." Y'all gettin cheeky clever with the names. I'm looking forward to browsing my holiday wish list!
Sorry Scott I don’t do anything attached to facebook, but will look at Amazon list, I rarely buy through them but thanks for the ideas.
Just goes to prove how different our tool requirements are !!
Love the channel! Very informative and entertaining. Always learn something new.
Your very welcome. And thank you good sir for all the content
I like watching your videos I'm learning a lot on these videos thanks for sharing them
Thanks for the heads up on the amazon affiliation. Bought my mom some wood working tools for her to use to update her house and most, if not all, were recommended by you. Unfortunately I didn't know you gents had amazon affiliate links; but I do now and will definitely use in the near future! Thanks and all the best
It’s going to be fun to watch the Instagram take off. Was at ~430 when I clicked follow.
This is hands down my favorite RUclips channel. You guys are awesome
7000+ when i did
Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work keep making greatness
"Who DOESN'T love tools?" I just rented a soil pipe cutter. Wow, it costs alot to own, but renting was affordable. And it did the job FAST, instead of messy and noisey using a sawzall. Then I found Knipex pliers and wrenches...that work far better than other pliers. But I want to know: are you going to use that cordless Skilsaw instead of the corded one? BTW- I don't do Instagram as its owned by facebook; I know some do, and welcome you adding this for others. But I prefer forums and youtube reviews of tools, by tools, for tools! LOL...
Yea, I’m afraid I’m out on the Instagram thing too 😕
Same here
The review portion isn't there, but you can still browse their list here: essentialcraftsman.com/galleryce
Thank you for putting out engaging content. Quite refreshing.
Scott I love your channel as usual you have a very interesting group of treasures that are tools. I have known you since you were just a kid and we were in school.Thank you for sharing the wonderful collection of special tools. You and your family are fine examples of what God intended his children to become.
Thanks Scotty good job ! Keep it coming!!
Playing Scotland the brave in the background! Love it
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Enjoying the pipes.
Great stuff.
From a Scottish person in Scotland.
Thanks Scott. Learning a lot from your channel.👍
Whenever I see his videos, I think he should've had the voice-related careers. His voice is so good and the diction is very clear.
What I love about good tools is knowing someone made them better than I can.
2:00 Careful there, Scott. Cut it wrong and you'll be building those stairs again! 😉
I completely agree.
"You can think of guns and musical instruments as tools" What a potently cool statement.
Never used instagram or Amazon and intend to keep it that way. Buy local or never have the option in the future. Its your dollar you vote with, the choice is yours.
They can't affiliate with all local shops everywhere, Amazon offers a one-point solution. You're free not to use Amazon just as others are free to use it if it fits their convenience.
I only go to Amazon if I can’t find what I’m looking for locally. Even if it costs a bit more money to buy locally, I love doing it. Sadly, not everything we need can be found just down the road. At least where I live, anyway.
@@richw9205 i go through ebay more frequently than amazon. Its tough to find Wright tools in my area
@@keeganwebber eBay is a great resource for finding lots of good stuff for sure.
Maybe you could do a video on making decisions on how much to buy, what to buy, what to let go of, etc. It’s hard to know what I may need in the future and what to do with all the extra hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches that I have been given over the years.
Hey EC- love the channel. Have you considered a podcast? Maybe a once a week discussion? Q+A? Old stories from the job site? I find that I enjoy listening to your show while working in the garage on other projects, gives me different ideas/ approaches to The existing project. Thanks for all the tips. Will be saving the amazon link for future family purchases. God Bless You.
"To have the right tool and know how to solve a problem" priceless!
"Not having the right tool and knowing how to solve the problem is of a learned craftsman" Vocha Alloy
keep UP THE GOOD WORK. THANK YOU
Followed! Now to think of different reasons to buy some of those tools.
There is comfort in owning quality tools, knowing when you need them, they will do the job. I worked with many carpenters that would buy cheap( or, what I call disposable) boots, bags, and tools.
Speaking of antique tools. I picked up a drill press for $20 today runs like a top. Weighs like 110 lbs. Weiler Machine Co. Made in Canada in the 50s or 60s. Can't wait to put it to use.
Thank you!
Can’t wait till I be a great dad to my kids like him
Man they will be soo clever bro
I just can’t wait
What he is teaching is amazing but it’s the way he is teaching though man
That’s what really grabs attention
I think it's cool when I dig a trench with the same trenching shovel my great grandfather and my grandfather used and all the stories behind it
Thanks. You are my Yoda of construction.
Love you vids. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I was going to build a garage but wood prices have tripled in the north east! Why is this? The wild fires on west coast? Keep up good work.
Thank you!!💜
Keep up the good work !
You keep up the good work!
Love the pipes in the soundtrack. More of that please!
As i was watching i happened to notice the subscribe button and could not believe i have not subscribed yet. Been watching your videos for a while now; And now, i have subscribed.
Keep up the good work Franklin NC
I knew this guy was going to blow up i sub at around 180k last year now hes at 840k congrats !
I was wondering if you have a video on your thoughts on shop organization, mechanic, versus carpenter shop versus yard tool organization?
A Christmas list made out for us to shop just in time for....Christmas 🎄.
Appreciate it!
What tool purchases were the biggest game changers to your career?
My list...
Cordless impact driver
Sawzall
Sliding compound miter saw
Telehandler
Titanium framing hammer
Except for the hammer, I’m on board with that list 👍
I have a titanium hammer. It’s a game changer
For me it was because I had an injury in my dominant hand. It just didn’t heal while I was using a heavier hammer. It cleared up after I started using a 14oz titanium framer.
I can understand why it might not be on the list for others. 🙂
@@joshuaandes7722 Explain...
@@joshuaandes7722 “Game changer” is profound.
I would never dismiss the belief in something so strongly that it can create a psychological advantage.
I would also NOT rule out the potential helpfulness @badlandskid alluded to.
I would simply say that titanium hammers are a very expensive luxury that MOST people will never realize any mechanical advantage from using.
I'll check it out. I'm a toolhound too!
Kind of surprised there wasn’t a favorite extension cord on this list!
If you’re just starting in a trade, there should be no shame in buying some budget tools to start your journey. There’s nothing wrong with getting to know your tools first. What you like about a particular tool or what you don’t like. Observing how your co-workers use the tools, etc. Who knows, you may even find that you don’t care for the work and move on to something else you like better.
The operator always makes the most profound difference in the ability of a tool.
I find a ton of great tools at garage sales
psidvicious I remember when I was able to buy my first worm drive. 👍🏼
some budget tools will last a long time.
i have a 3/8 socket set from kmart that are 40 years old and they still get the job done.
budget vs crappy, this is indeed a thin line. see my post above.
Brilliant idea. I had a leaked shower faucet but I could not remove the handles. Then I found out there was a tool to remove stuck on handles. Then a tool to remove the valve. Finally another tool to remove the seat. If I didn’t find these tools I would of needed to call a plumber.
Love and watch your videos often, from UK and tips and tricks you show are awesome. How did you like the battery skillsaw? Ever used Dewalt?
One thing about being local is supporting local... love this channel and love being an Oregonian my whole life... my only issue with stating this is, why not promote everyone’s local shops... my shingle supplier has multiple tools I buy for everyday work and so many other shops that I can get guns and saws from as well as have them rebuilt. Glad to see your channel grow.
Who could thumbs down an essential craftsmen video?!
I always upvote your videos, just wish I could do it twice for the bagpipes.
keep up the good work! :)
Most RUclipsrs will include the Amazon links to tools used in the video notes/description, it might be something to consider having that info in 2 spots for those who don’t have instagram.
essentialcraftsman.com/galleryce
I love the bag pipes, ok
had 13 holes to drill into concrete. a reantal company wanted 55 dollars a hour for a impact drill. I'm 70 I figure it would take me at least 2 days. I went put and purchased me a 20 volt dewalt impact drill. I figure it costed me more, but Now I have a nice drill for the future.
The change from the bluegrassy music to Irish bagpipes is interesting.
What jeans do you wear? Love the vids! Keep up the great work!
I would love to hear what you have to say about vices and sash claps.
I like bagpipes in the background! I suggest doing your research and try your best to source tools that are American made. It's not always possible but it's vital
I wish I could be half the carpenter you are keep the videos coming for the Next Generation
Wish you had an "affiliate link" for the Carolina boots I just got last week. Nate's assessment of them was spot-on, after only 25 hours in them the past two days. They're like slippers. Much better than the Red Wings they replaced.
That price, though. Oof. Union labor, amirite?
“You know I love tools right?”
-me to my wife when she’s trying to figure out what to get me for our anniversary
Now following the new page!
I love tools, have many, and can fix anything but a broken heart. I believe we are kindred spirits. .
Good words. I'd still like to know what brand of bib overalls Cy wears. 🤠
Having the right tool and know how to use it will make every job easier....
we boys and our toys lol and these days a lot of young women are now tool/toy collectors i find that refreshing as a young woodworker we had a couple of women in the shop very unusual at the time another great video
Hi! What are the work shirts we see you wearing in all the videos?
Thanks!
