My family has been away from Ireland since the "potato famine" when they immigrated to the U.S. My parents have both now passed away to be with Christ and when I hear songs like this, it makes me long for the land of my ancestors. May God continue to bless you as you share your musical gifts with the rest of us. Thank you for sharing this wonderful song with us.

I just started a new job in hospice. I'm a social worker. We Are Messengers is my favorite band, so I came here for comfort after a patient passed today. I've decided to honor each patient death with this song, and it will serve as my method of paying respect and expressing my grief. TY WAM. God, please watch over the sick and suffering. Amen.

This is such a beautiful speech and song, and I find it extremely meaningful and calming. ❤️❤️❤️
"But I am a man who has been loved well
both by God and his family.
    And I'm a grateful man.
    So friends,
    Walk slow,
    Go easy,
    And love well."
I normally would say I don't care as I'll be gone, but I have to say that I would love to have this played at my funeral.

I sing this to my niece all the time. She was super colicky when she was little and it used to calm her down. Always reminds me of my little Buddy now. This was beautiful.

What do the lyrics mean, "that I should rise and you should not"? Is it condemning those whom he just spoke of (comrades and sweethearts)? It's a bit disturbing that one line. I hope I'm getting it wrong.

No, it's an old Irish song about the tradition of filling the parting glass when someone must leave a gathering. Their friends are sorry that they must leave, so they fill one last glass of drink for them as a final act of hospitality before they leave.
