    After World War I, France built the Maginot Line, a massive defense network along its border with Germany, to deter future invasions. Anticipating this obstacle, German planners devised bold strategies to overcome it, including the creation of an enormous artillery piece. The German company Krupp began developing this weapon, drawing on their experience with railway guns from earlier conflicts. The result was Schwerer Gustav, a colossal gun weighing 1,490 tons, with a barrel length of nearly 107 feet, capable of firing 80 cm shells up to 29 miles. Despite its immense cost of 10 million Reichsmarks, Krupp provided this engineering marvel to the German military for free, symbolizing their support for the war effort.

    Rail guns are sort of an anachronisms in WW2 because everything was so much more motorized. It was much more useful to have mobile artillery and armor than one large gun that could only move by rails. It would only really be useful in sieges, and even then you could probably better use the man power operating smaller guns.

    I think this could have been really effective if germany had air superiority over the gun. since the round is so big, its basically a bombing raid without the airplanes. Hitler definitely thought big. But this looks dumb.
    I assume it was inaccurate because of to much movement in the gun, train, trac, soil, wind.....?
    Can it be said that the bigger the ballistic, the less accuracy?
    I know a guy that shoots .22 cal. from a bench mounted machine that doesn't look like a gun. It's all about mastering the accuracy.
    Every bullet is different so he makes his own. He is absolute spot on. He can put 5 shots and have one hole at 150'.
    It's a science thing. This big gun is a psychological thing. One shoot, no hole and everyone is terrified! Guess you can say that also is a science!

    • @hermes7587
      @hermes7587 2 дня назад +1

      Actually the Germans were very good at aiming artillery pieces.
      The problem is that there are inherent problems when you try to hurl a huge unguided projectile over 30 miles.
      First the gun had to shoot from beyond the range of enemy artillery because it was such a massive target. Over such a long range even tiny things can influence your aim,
      e.g. the Germans stored the powder charges for the gun in temperature controled compartments to make sure that the charges would deliver a consistent blast.
      Every shot of the gun also made the bore of the gun slightly larger because of the extreme pressure inside. The engineers had accounted for this and made projectiles with slightly different diameters. Another problem was that the barrels had a very limited service life and would have to be replaced frequently if this gun would have been used on a regular basis.

    • @taboovsknowledge1603
      @taboovsknowledge1603 2 дня назад

      @@hermes7587 So the metal of a small gun is the same as the big gun but the big gun has different factors thus, less effective over all it takes to make it beneficial.
      The bigger the gun, the bigger the problems that small guns don't have.

    • @hermes7587
      @hermes7587 2 дня назад +1

      @@taboovsknowledge1603 I think it is futile to even compare aiming a handheld gun to heavy artillery piece.
      A rifleman usually does not consider factors like the curvature of the earth, the Coriolis force, air pressure or the size and temperature of the powder charge.

    • @taboovsknowledge1603
      @taboovsknowledge1603 2 дня назад

      @@hermes7587 The comparison is that .22 cal at 150', "Small".
      vs
      This behemoth is that it is all the same material and similar action. Yet, the bigger it gets, the more obvious the issues.
      So if you are having a problem with accuracy with the small arms. Research the big arms and you could find the cause.
      Like, if your out shooting a .22 and you have rounds in 100 count holder cap side up on a hot, sunny day. You could have a variation like the temperature room for the power on the big gun.
      The Earth turning is lesser of an issue.

    It has to be said: the German industry really set in motion a series of breakthroughs in research and development of weapons for the allies to exploit after the war and these projects were either deployed far too late to turn the tide of the war in Germany's favour or were the ultimate weapons on paper but a total waste of funding and resources and the Schwerer Gustav fits the latter category.

    A piece of the Schwerer Gustav still survived, a large artillery shell...
    The shell is about 4 meters long and it weighs 5000 KGS. It could inflict enormous damage, it could penetrate 10 meters of concrete, it could penetrate a steel plate. When that thing fires, you got fire power...
    It took about 25 trains to bring all the equipment. All the installations of the Schwerer Gustav. It took about 2-3 months before it was ready to fire on June 1942. There were about 2500 people needed to build tracks for the gun, to assemble the gun, and to fire the gun.
    It took 90 days to prepare to gun for firing. And it was only used once against the Soviet city of Sevastapol...
    It was able to destroy some heavy fortification both at a price:
    1. It could fire 48 shots and it's barrel was wornout, wornout completely. It needs enormous maintenance to keep it in working order.
    2. And because of its dimension is vulnerable to air attacks.
    Once the Schwerer Gustav a successful weapon, in the end the answer is NO....
