After World War I, France built the Maginot Line, a massive defense network along its border with Germany, to deter future invasions. Anticipating this obstacle, German planners devised bold strategies to overcome it, including the creation of an enormous artillery piece. The German company Krupp began developing this weapon, drawing on their experience with railway guns from earlier conflicts. The result was Schwerer Gustav, a colossal gun weighing 1,490 tons, with a barrel length of nearly 107 feet, capable of firing 80 cm shells up to 29 miles. Despite its immense cost of 10 million Reichsmarks, Krupp provided this engineering marvel to the German military for free, symbolizing their support for the war effort.

To celebrate 10 years of Simple History, we're revisiting one of our favorite videos on the channel-The Schwerer Gustav! This time, we're adding even more information and showcasing it with our updated animation style. We're also excited to introduce a new voice to the Simple History family... Ryan! He'll be joining Chris and Rex in lending his voice to the channel, and we can't wait to hear your thoughts!
ok
Thank you for your amazing work by the way
New narrator sucks ! Pompous d-bag
Ngl Ryan sounds alot like someone who would narrate for the BBC.
Get the old narrator back
I like how they destroyed the Shwerer Gustav to prevent its capture, as if the Allies would ever repurpose such an impractical weapon.
The allies would have used it to bomb civilian cities as that was their MO
Ever heard of innovation? Laying the foundation is the key, improving and recreating something else out of it is always easier. First aeroplane was nothing compared to modern planes. But it was that foundation that humans always wanted.

What a spectacularly colossal waste of resources.
Worst idea ever
I think der Führer's idea for improving any military hardware was always "Größer, größer, größer!"
It is about a destroyer's worth of resources and two U boats worth in reichsmarks, the "waste of resources" that went into this is dramatically overstated.
@@darthhuller5201 You're forgetting the thousands of soldiers needed to fire and assemble the weapon. It's not just materials that were wasted, it was man power being wasted as well. Training the crew takes considerable time. Considering how little it paid off, I stand by my statement.
Hitler was certainly very happy when the V2 came along. Not only was it more practical, but it was also a far better phallic symbol. :D
new narrator doesnt sound like he has the war in him...

Finally! We get more detail into this magnificent wonder weapon from WW2
More like a blunder weapon
The A-bomb was a magnificent wonder weapon.
This was a turd.
to be fair at that point they prepared weapons for a World War 1 type of war.
but instead of ludiciris artillery it was tanks that broke the stalemate of dug outs

This is the missing piece, a weapon to surpass Metal Gear!
Wheres the og narrator? Its not the same
They take turns I think, he’ll be back next video
that gun is huge!
"You see that hill soldiers? I don't wanna." ahh weapon.
My Great-Grandpa was a Spotter for the Wehrmacht in the siege of Leningrad and gave coordinates to the many different artillery Kompanies and also to the Schwerer Gustav but it was disassembled and orderd away and he never found out why.
Anyone who saw Korra knows you just need a few metal benders to take that thing out.
If they don't capture it themselves
Rail guns are sort of an anachronisms in WW2 because everything was so much more motorized. It was much more useful to have mobile artillery and armor than one large gun that could only move by rails. It would only really be useful in sieges, and even then you could probably better use the man power operating smaller guns.
Personally i enjoy the new narrator very much
I think this could have been really effective if germany had air superiority over the gun. since the round is so big, its basically a bombing raid without the airplanes. That means no risk of losing aircraft or people over Britain. If they had a few extra barrels on hand, london could have been leveled through consistent fire.
by then that gun would of just been targeted by the royal navy
V2s made it completely obsolete.
"Sir, there seems to be a large metal tube sticking out of those trees."
In the tale of the round that hit the ammo bunker, I've heard that it was underwater and underground.
So Star Wars : the last jedi is inspired by this history. They have Hitler type of leader and also the railway wipe out entire planet.
Hitler definitely thought big. But this looks dumb.
I assume it was inaccurate because of to much movement in the gun, train, trac, soil, wind.....?
Can it be said that the bigger the ballistic, the less accuracy?
I know a guy that shoots .22 cal. from a bench mounted machine that doesn't look like a gun. It's all about mastering the accuracy.
Every bullet is different so he makes his own. He is absolute spot on. He can put 5 shots and have one hole at 150'.
It's a science thing. This big gun is a psychological thing. One shoot, no hole and everyone is terrified! Guess you can say that also is a science!
Actually the Germans were very good at aiming artillery pieces.
The problem is that there are inherent problems when you try to hurl a huge unguided projectile over 30 miles.
First the gun had to shoot from beyond the range of enemy artillery because it was such a massive target. Over such a long range even tiny things can influence your aim,
e.g. the Germans stored the powder charges for the gun in temperature controled compartments to make sure that the charges would deliver a consistent blast.
Every shot of the gun also made the bore of the gun slightly larger because of the extreme pressure inside. The engineers had accounted for this and made projectiles with slightly different diameters. Another problem was that the barrels had a very limited service life and would have to be replaced frequently if this gun would have been used on a regular basis.
@@hermes7587 So the metal of a small gun is the same as the big gun but the big gun has different factors thus, less effective over all it takes to make it beneficial.
The bigger the gun, the bigger the problems that small guns don't have.
@@taboovsknowledge1603 I think it is futile to even compare aiming a handheld gun to heavy artillery piece.
A rifleman usually does not consider factors like the curvature of the earth, the Coriolis force, air pressure or the size and temperature of the powder charge.
@@hermes7587 The comparison is that .22 cal at 150', "Small".
vs
This behemoth is that it is all the same material and similar action. Yet, the bigger it gets, the more obvious the issues.
So if you are having a problem with accuracy with the small arms. Research the big arms and you could find the cause.
Like, if your out shooting a .22 and you have rounds in 100 count holder cap side up on a hot, sunny day. You could have a variation like the temperature room for the power on the big gun.
The Earth turning is lesser of an issue.
SturmTiger when it sees this: "And I thought I was big..."
How do we not know how many of these massive war machines were built
I really like the animation of the recoil.
In reality, the brakes where loosened, to avoid breaking apart. And it rolled quite a bit backwards.
Hate to burst the bubble, but there were two guns, they had to use special tracks, and were led by a colonel, has it had three thousand men.
But you already made this video 6 years ago
This is basically a remastered video
It has to be said: the German industry really set in motion a series of breakthroughs in research and development of weapons for the allies to exploit after the war and these projects were either deployed far too late to turn the tide of the war in Germany's favour or were the ultimate weapons on paper but a total waste of funding and resources and the Schwerer Gustav fits the latter category.
your videos are amazing sir
Typical Hitler. Not only does he shoot himself in the foot, he creates an grandiose behemoth of a gun to do it with.
A piece of the Schwerer Gustav still survived, a large artillery shell...
The shell is about 4 meters long and it weighs 5000 KGS. It could inflict enormous damage, it could penetrate 10 meters of concrete, it could penetrate a steel plate. When that thing fires, you got fire power...
It took about 25 trains to bring all the equipment. All the installations of the Schwerer Gustav. It took about 2-3 months before it was ready to fire on June 1942. There were about 2500 people needed to build tracks for the gun, to assemble the gun, and to fire the gun.
It took 90 days to prepare to gun for firing. And it was only used once against the Soviet city of Sevastapol...
It was able to destroy some heavy fortification both at a price:
1. It could fire 48 shots and it's barrel was wornout, wornout completely. It needs enormous maintenance to keep it in working order.
2. And because of its dimension is vulnerable to air attacks.
Once the Schwerer Gustav a successful weapon, in the end the answer is NO....
This is more of a rail gun, than a railgun, right? A railgun is a specific thing. This is an upscaled artillery cannon on a railway system.
Could you possibly imagine what the German's could've built with all these men and the resources it took? As an American, I am just simply happy at leaving it at that and being thankful they didn't commit them elsewhere.
The proof that size doesn't always matter 😉
People calling this gun unpractical might have a point but also understand zero about ww2 or war as a whole. This was the first truly long range artillery that was able to seriously damage bunkers and other defensive structures, exactly what the germans had to fight against especially during the france campaign in which if memory serves me right the gustavs smaller variants were used to shell the maginot line.
Heavy gun that can barely move
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the gun was never fully disassembled. It was just towed by multiple railway cars
Epic a redo
Narrator does a good job. Don't let the hate get to you. People don't like changes that's all

@@ChrisKane- maybe you're new to this channel, but that guy who makes his voice deeper is the second narrator.
@@MajorJakas Interesting. Thanks for the heads up. 😎
This video greatly expands upon the original from several years back, and more thoroughly demonstrates why it was such a horrendous waste of resources.
Yes, whatever it hits would be very, *_VERY_* dead...but that requires you to actually _hit_ something with it. And as we can see, accuracy was not one of _Schwerer Gustav/Dora's_ strong points.
I like the narrator; clear, concise, good flow and pacing. That's not to say your narration wasn't any of those things, of course, but this new narrator is quite good.

My Pitbull is named Gustav, yes after the gun because both of them are not to be F'd with. :D

What are the reasons?
Germany can actually rebuild this with todays technology.
They can make a P.1000 Ratte chassis with less armor and more engine power. They can place the Gustav cannon on that chassis.
it would be literally useless
This was the real life prototype macro cannon. A true macro cannon would have a much larger bore diameter.
Puss in boots the last wish
This is getting to be ridiculous there are way more commercials interrupting than there are minutes in the show😢
Gotta love the obsession with making insanely overpowered weapons when you can get similar to identical results just by spamming smaller and cheaper options.
