When the winter comes, I’m not sure if you do this, but I do. I will take a few of those pepper plants and plant them in a 5 gallon bag or a pot and over winter them because what happens is when spring starts again they will be blooming and giving you peppers before the new seedlings do so I have two overwinter pepper trees, three years old and I am getting big hand size peppers from them right now until the other ones start which flowering now
As long as your temps don’t get close to or below freezing, you will be fine if they are in the garage. If it’s too cold, you could definitely bring them inside and water occasionally. They shouldn’t need too much water.
I do the same! Keep them in the laundry room with some sun and water as needed. Peppers all winter. I hand pollinate the blooms. Third and last year for my jalapeño. But will overwinter some new ones this year!
Lovely video on peppers. Here in Canada, I have not been complaining about climate change. In zone 4A, 10 years ago tomatoes were near impossible, but this year I was able to grow both peppers and cantaloupe. Yield was not comparable to the Carolinas, but I did get a few of each for a few pots and a small patch. The tip about calcium was appreciated. Certainly, the tomatoes get the bulk of my crushed egg shells. Every year is another learning curve. I finally got my garlic to produce large heads along with large onions. It’s mid-September and the tomatoes are finally turning red. My wife’s zucchini and radish soups are amazing. Not sure what to experiment with next year. Thanks, and Like, cheers, eh! 🦫🇨🇦🇺🇸🧅🧄
This is great information! Especially the info on fertilizing with respect to, not only what is recommended and why, but also what not to use, like extra nitrogen. This is very helpful! Gotta say, though, I really feel for your back! That's a lot of bending and standing! Please take care!
So glad you enjoyed the video! The soil in my raised beds has decreased as all of the logs and branches that we filled the bottoms with have decomposed. I feel like I am bending so much that I don’t even realize it anymore!
Excellent video and super job presenting. We’re in northern Minnesota and going to plant our peppers this week. You gave us such tremendous info that will really improve our success and also other recipes. Thank you for sharing and what a well kept garden!
Good tip..was wondering why my peppers weren't getting the size I wanted. i didn't pick the buds off when I should have let the plant establish a good root system. Thanks for the good advice.
Can I put something like 101010(slow release granular fertilizer) in the planting hole at the time of planting also along with the rock phosphate and bone meal?
I had the same problem. When temps dropped here in NY. I got my hands on some Scotch Bonnet peppers and Trinidad Seasoning Peppers straight from Grenada took the seeds and grew like 100 plants and lost all of them because of the weather. Luckily I had a backup set but they still are taking long
Can i ask why you take the flowers off? Im asking Because my pepers are slow going and everything else is busting at the seems. I just fell in love with your channel! We are trying to start our channel but were just back yard gardening on a big budget! Hopefully one day God will bless us with some more room maybe a greenhouse! Thank you for the knowledge!
Thank you for your kind words. Im so glad you are enjoying my channel! I take the flowers and buds off because the plants are very small. They need to put all their energy into developing a good root system. Once they are bigger, I'll allow the blossoms to develop into fruit. If I didn't pick off the blossoms, I would get peppers sooner, but the plant would never produce a bountiful harvest as it will when you allow it to focus on root production in the early season. The bigger the root system, the more nutrients the plant can take up and the better fruit production you'll have:). Hope that helps
Thank you. I really attribute my healthy seedlings to my soil mix that I make into soil blocks and start all my seedlings in. Here is a link to that video: ruclips.net/video/RiMtH4QEoXw/видео.htmlsi=RVbq5nGO1IEwlxEP
My bell pepper plants have a whole bunch of flower buds forming at the tip of the plant. I missed up potting them at the right time. We have a very short growing season and I do not want to risk topping them off! Wonder how to remove those buds without hurting any of the top foliage 😢
I planted my pepper seedlings out a week ago, and many have blooms and small peppers. I’m in the same area as you - would it be worth my while to go out and pick off blooms and baby peppers or is it too late now?
I would pick them off asap. I missed a few flowers and had a couple of tiny peppers start growing. As soon as I saw them, I took them off. It will divert the energy back to root production which is what you want right now:)
My plants are probably 12 inches apart in all directions. Your spacing sounds great but if you want to get more in a smaller space, then go for 12 inch rows
Do you use bug repellent to keep mosquitos and other bugs from biting you? Your skin looks so good. I'm in IN and can't go out to my garden without getting eaten up by them. I'm trying what they say is a more natural bug repellent, listerine, this year cause I don't want to use all those chemicals on my skin.
We are just now starting to see a few mosquitos. Honestly, the garden gets so hot that they really don't bother me. If I was in the shade of one of our Pecan trees, they would eat me alive. I don't use any type of bug repellant or sprays. If I am ever worried about it, I will just wear a light long sleeve button up shirt to keep the critters off of me:)
Sorry, if I missed this point - but… do you plant your peppers deep, like you do tomato plants? Do peppers produce roots along their stems, if planted deeper? I love to pinch my peppers so that they put on more stems and fill out!
Have you ever brought you peppers in for the winter then put them out in spring? I it last year and about ready to put them out. I was wondering if you had any tips to make the transition go well.
I haven't overwintered my peppers yet, but I plan to do that with just a few pepper plants this year so we can have peppers for fresh eating prior to the main preserving harvest!
So you are adding the correct amount of phosphorus ( the middle number) but you are also adding nitrogen ( the first number) and potassium. Also, this fertilizer I am assuming is synthetic, so most likely it is a quick acting fertilizer and will not last as long as a rock phosphate would, which is slow acting.
@@MorganHillFarms Hi. Thank You so much for your reply!! I tried sending a pic of the bag of Organic Fertilizer. Couldn't load it. Thank You. I will be subscribing ! Joe in Rhode Island.
Why do you keep the soil level in your beds so low, compared to how deep the beds are? Are you using the walls of the bed to help shade the plants when the sun is low or something? Just curious, thanks.
When we built the garden, we filled the beds with leaves, compost, grass clippings, logs and sticks etc. The level has decreased as these things have decomposed. I do not have any barrier at the bottom of the beds so my plants can reach into the native soil below. I could fill them to the top, but that would be a lot of soil and money. I do top off with a few inches of compost every year though:)
Yes! I only plant in the garden after nighttime temps are above 50. Even if they are on my back patio hardening off, I will bring them in on nights colder than 50.
@@MorganHillFarms thanks for the response. I'm going to take your advice and wait to plant until Monday when the forecast shows the night temps to stay above 50.👍
I usually start from seed but this year my onions didn't do well. I ended up planting some onion plants that have begun to bulb up really nicely. If you are seeing the crop behind me in this video, that one is garlic:). You can let the little buds grow a bit larger and then pinch them off. I think you'd be just fine doing that!
Since I already planted mine, can I go ahead and add the amendments? They are in a new bed that got aome good compost.
Yes you can. Just work it into the top inch or so of soil without disturbing the roots of your peppers. You'll be just fine to do it this way!
