  • When viewing the Earth from space, many astronauts experience overwhelming feelings of awe, transcendence, and connectedness with humanity and the planet, commonly referred to as the Overview Effect. Space for Humanity Executive Director, Rachel Lyons, discusses how this view could be the post important perspective of our time, and is becoming accessible to more than just professional astronauts and the ultra-wealthy.
    spaceforhumanity.org
    #tedxstgeorge #tedxtalk
Rachel Lyons is a key advocate of the space movement. She is Executive Director of Space for Humanity, a non-profit organization which aims to use the spaceflight experience as a way to expand our perspective on Earth. Under her leadership, Space For Humanity has received public support from some of the space industry's most prominent and influential leaders including Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, NASA astronauts and other industry leaders.
Ultimately, Lyons believes that if we, as individuals, take on a grander perspective, we can contribute to greater societal change. She works to expand her perspective every day through leadership training, spending time in nature, learning about space, movement and dance. It is her wish that people from all over the world understand we are part of something much greater and in turn use that perspective to treat each other and our planet with deeper respect. spaceforhumanity.org/ This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Just WOW! Rachel, what an incredibly powerful talk. It's amazing to know of your efforts and just how impactful it is on the trajectory the Earth and humanity to have more and more people's mind's transformed by this shift of perspective. Such an inspiration. Applauding you from Colorado!

This is a beautiful Ted talk she’s giving. I think about that effect all the time, about how seeing the earth from that perspective could make a person feel so small in all the vastness of this universe. And how amazing it would be to go into outer space. And I think that just the thought of going into space should inspire others to understand why we should be kinder to one another, or connect with one another more, because from miles and miles away, all of us TOGETHER make up this thing called planet Earth. Working together, we can make it even better. Let’s open our minds, and our hearts, and continue to help others to expand their perspectives like Rachel has done in this video. Shout out to her 🙏🏾

"You live in a world that is a gem in the universe, a world that you are despoiling and exploiting. And others seek to intervene to preserve this world and these resources for themselves.
You are the foolish stewards of a beautiful place. You must unite to protect it and to safeguard it and to learn to use it wisely or it will surely be lost. It will surely be lost to others."

Rachel Lyons' positivity and passion is contagious. Among the best TEDx talks I have seen. The work by Rachel and Space For Humanity is not just about taking us to Space but it's about making humans feel connected through the Overview Effect- the feeling we get when we see Earth from Space. Thank you Rachel, Space For Humanity and TEDx 🙏🚀 To Space, For Earth! For Humanity!

"The unity of the human race, as envisaged by Baha’u’llah, implies the establishment of a world commonwealth in which all nations, races, creeds and classes are closely and permanently united, and in which the autonomy of its state members and the personal freedom and initiative of the individuals that compose them are definitely and completely safeguarded. This commonwealth must, as far as we can visualize it, consist of a world legislature, whose members will, as the trustees of the whole of mankind, ultimately control the entire resources of all the component nations, and will enact such laws as shall be required to regulate the life, satisfy the needs and adjust the relationships of all races and peoples. A world executive, backed by an international Force, will carry out the decisions arrived at, and apply the laws enacted by, this world legislature, and will safeguard the organic unity of the whole commonwealth. A world tribunal will adjudicate and deliver its compulsory and final verdict in all and any disputes that may arise between the various elements constituting this universal system."

    How much irrtting
    this mndless speech sounds.
People who could not put two bricks
on the top of each other,
    even if they wanted,
who could not put a rock at the end
    of a stick,
those people are longing for the
spiritual experience of a space travel.
    'Cause that will show them
    the worth of life.
    The worth of the planet.
    Otherwise they don't feel it.
    Jeeez ... just go out.
    Touch grass.
Go out to the streets and nature.
    Go out and love it.
    Love it (if you can).
    Love it while you can.
'Cause when those times will come
when you should put a rock to
    the end of the stick,
    then you will lose.
    You will be lost,
    and you won't love anything
    anymore.

Religiousness does absolutely nothing to prevent people from polluting and abusing and exploiting the earth. Nothing. Because humans, even very religious humans, arrogantly believe themselves to be above nature. If it takes space flight to finally get people to care about the earth, an earth that was - according to certain religious texts - entrusted to us humans, so be it. Earth is infinitely more important than the thoughts in our minds or the money in our pockets.
