The academic requirements are a huge issue as to why it's difficult to win at Vanderbilt and even at schools like Northwestern and Stanford show it's really hard to maintain a dominant football program. Even in their best years neither Northwestern or Stanford had/have a bunch of explosive players, they might have a few but they mostly win on the lines and playing smart disciplined football. The other part that makes it hard, and we've seen this throughout the years at Northwestern and Stanford, is once injuries start to hit the programs suffer and not only that if they miss on recruits it has a much bigger effect than other programs. All programs, Ohio State and Alabama included, will have highly ranked recruits who for whatever reason aren't good but they generally have enough depth to make up for their misses, along with some injuries, Stanford and Northwestern don't have those luxuries. They can handle a few injuries but not many and they can have a recruit miss but not many. That's what makes Vanderbilt so tough, football is not the main focus, they're in arguably the toughest conference year in and year out, they have no room for missing on recruits combined with injuries, so it's always going to be incredibly tough to win there with any consistency. Hiring a defensive coordinator isn't an issue, Nick Saban at Alabama kind of proves you can be a defensive minded head coach and win, but getting a guy who is a good coach, has a good staff, and most importantly identify and recruit 2 to 3 star gems that are overlooked is key. They won't win 10 games every year but a good coach can probably have a 10 win season here, 9 win season, 6-7 record then a down year or two, then back to an 7 or 8 win season. That's probably the best they can hope for.

Vandy admin could care less about their football program and it’s been like that for decades, obviously. Their stadium is from the 19th century. Every game is an away game for them.
They need to hire someone that thinks outside the box. Hire someone like Paul Johnson for the triple option or someone like Mike Leach. The problem with Vandy is the academic restrictions and the administration has to be all in for building a program (facilities, stadium and so on). The rest of the SEC crushes them on that.
I’ve heard the new guys in charge are different and actually will care about athletics. I think with the draw Nashville and the SEC is, this team could end up like Northwestern and Stanford in the long run
Its not just that they are a baseball school they are a strictly academic school my cousin wanted to go to Vanderbilt and they told him his 3.6 wasn't high enough so he took the scholarship to miss st as a tight end
Vandy, Rutgers and Kansas. They all fall into the same category. Football is just never going to happen for those universities. Why would good high school football players ever want to go to those places? Those types of schools can literally destroy a coach's career
Vandy needs to do what clemson did. Dont go for some offensive or defensive guy, but get a head coach that can recruit top talent, and build a strong winning culture. Then get quality coordinators on both sides of the ball and pay them well. college ball you need talent and a good culture first and let your play makers make plays.
I am not sure what vandy does with that SEC television check - it has the worst football facilities in the power 5 and that right there automatically puts you at a disadvantage - high academic requirements for student athletes can be worked with as long as there’s good facilities and backing from the administration(look at northwestern) - James Franklin hit lighting in the bottle with a weaker SEC East at the time and skipped town - I say they should have grabbed a good triple option coach who can do more with less and that can develop players
As a Vandy fan we just can’t recruit well enough to compete in the SEC. What makes recruiting harder is having to compete with in-state schools like Tennessee and Memphis where a lot of the solid in state 3 star goes. The academic restrictions don’t help either. Also having to compete with Low level big ten schools for recruits because we can’t compete with any Sec school or ACC for that matter. We’re better of cutting our football program because it’s not like they make any money or join a Go5 or the Ivy League for football.
If he does well as a DC again then he will get another FBS HC job. Hopefully he chooses wiser and takes a job that can win in their conference like a Colorado State or Troy. Then maybe from there he can get a legit Power 5 school.
We will take him at Alabama. Vanderbilt is a small school that's about total academic success. They should play in the Ivy League. No doubt, the would have many rings.
Asking why Derek Mason failed to achieve success at Vanderbilt is like asking why chickens dont thrive at KFC...failure is just built in to that program
Look he literally proved he couldn’t coach when he enlisted a female soccer player. You can’t tell me there wasn’t a single player on the roster that couldn’t have been coached up in a matter of 10 minutes to kick off.
the one thing i don't believe you touched on is that Vanderbilt is a medical school. It is not an excuse but it is hard to recruit 5 star athletes there.
7 years isn’t a death sentence if you are replacing some one who had success there to begin with and 7 years using by any means a short leash that’s ridiculous
When you recruit a kid at a SEC school you sell them on a professional football career. When you recruit a kid to Vanderbilt you sell them on a professional career other than football.
They really don't belong in the SEC. But I think secretly the SEC coaches, especially the lower tier teams, like having them there because it's a guaranteed conference win every year.
Honestly I just think it’s the administration that does not care for the program. Like you said it’s a baseball school and that sucks cause if you put the money and time in Vandy could be ok actually
They didn't almost beat Texas A&M, they couldn't have because the offense never got the ball past the 50 unless the Aggie offense fumbled it away there.
Seems Vandy would be a great spot for a country music loving player, but seems recruiting has not been good enough to get them over the hump....why not Les Miles?
Vanderbilt fan: My preferred candidate is Jeff Fisher(who I've actually heard connected to the job). He is a guaranteed path to mediocrity and we can work from there.
Vanderbilt has a 9.6% acceptance rate, coaching there is like coaching at a Notre Dame but without all the fame. Harder to get those quality athletes when the program has always been bad too.
Vanderbilt is not I the Big 10 or Pac 12. They are in the SEC. They are the smallest school in the SEC, A private school, hard to get into school academically.

For Memphis but the AAC probably wouldn't want to🤣🤣🤣🤣
Im shocked playing the female kicker did not extend his tenure for at least 5 more years. Such courage. Much history.
Not gonna lie this whole time i thought that he was the wr that played in the NFL for the titans and ravens
I always thought vandy showed be moved to a smaller conference I think they would become a great team in a lesser conference.
i literally thought he got the death sentence.
Welcome to Auburn Coach Mason!! WDE
They should drop football and continue concentrating on education.
Lol can the SEC just trade Vanderbilt to the American for Memphis?
I am sure he didn't mind cashing the checks
Vanderbilt fan: My preferred candidate is Jeff Fisher(who I've actually heard connected to the job). He is a guaranteed path to mediocrity and we can work from there.
Kansas tried out les miles. He sucked
Vanderbilt has a 9.6% acceptance rate, coaching there is like coaching at a Notre Dame but without all the fame. Harder to get those quality athletes when the program has always been bad too.
Pat Hill of Fresno State
Vanderbilt is not I the Big 10 or Pac 12. They are in the SEC. They are the smallest school in the SEC, A private school, hard to get into school academically.
Vandy is not in the football business. Until they decide to get in the SEC Arms Race, this is their plight.
Hey, if you do NOT win, then you will be FIRED ! The problem is that there is an "interesting" list of D-l football jobs that get offered to black men, and ,once fired, they usually do NOT get to be head coaches again.
