It very much was an apocalyptic situation, and Donnie Darko was very much like Jesus who may have been given a choice in one way or another but in the end he did what he did to save other people from the end of the world. Period.
@@voteZDLR You are using a piece of literature to enforce your argument. In a literal sense, they are literary themes, Your conscious is how you percieve the world. So if your perception is severed, through death, the world is therefore over. Time takes place all at once, so if Donnie died then he is removed from all timelines, there are no more world for him. He ascendes to godhood, gosh the way this movie hit me and founded my love for literature is better than the first time I did LSD. Which was fucking great.
@@gagebailey8342I mean, you could argue that the Bible (oh nevermind, even worse, you meant the book by Roberta Sparrow -- I mean, that book was an actual centerpiece and focal point of the story itself, if we can't enforce our argument by it or other things in the story then what CAN we base it on?) has led to the most literal themes or whatever in the most works across history, so I am not even making an original point in sayingh that. But I mean then again I'd argue the Bible is more than just a "piece of literature". It's more powerful anyway and has had more lasting effects on the world than fucking Harry Potter has for example (which I would argue also has biblical themes, ironically enough). And no I am not a religious person, let alone a Christian, I do think that the power of the concept behind "Jesus like" characters IS strong, though. And in Donnie's case to me I don't think it could be any more clear, he was a flawed individual himself who was basically given a choice between saving himself and himself alone at the cost of the fate of the rest of the entire world, or he could do what he did to save everyone else, the good, the evil, the people he knew and the people he didn't. I mean, that's what a good bible-thumping Christian would tell you their man JC did for the rest of us on planet Earth, one way or another he did die though on the cross, whether you believe it was for everyone else's sake or not is of course up to you.
His biggest fear was to die alone. He did. In the end he chose love over fear.

The weirdest thing happened when I watched this movie. I had just finished learning about "Cellar Door" that very same day and knew nothing about its significance in the movie. I end up watching the movie to go to sleep and see the reference to it in the movie and it freaks me tf out. Such a weird coincidence.

Fun fact: Richard Kelly wrote the script for Donnie Darko in 28 days and filming for the movie also took 28 days. The same amount of time Donnie is given to save the world.
It came out around the time of Blair Witch Project, so creating conspiracies' around the movie was a selling point for many movies. I promise you that he didnt wrote such complex story in 28 days. He might of put together something that he was working on for 10 years, since it was his first project. So before going down the rabbit hole, lets accept the possibly of simple coincident or a simple marketing plot.

If you read the text written in the book, it says that he will experience visual and auditory hallucinations, along with telekinetic powers as the few weeks in the tangent universe collapse. It is very quick in the movie but Roberta Sparrow did write it in the book.

Yeah that was stupid. He didn't have psychokinetic powers. The portal came for HIM, and there just happened to be an airplane there, so he made sure to be in the right place and at the right time in order to make the jet engine go back in his place and set the course of events properly in the new recreated universe which matches the old one in an earlier state. That's how he ACTUALLY did it. He could predict things, not move things with telekinesis.

I’ve had dreams where I’ve met someone and the feelings are so intense. I’m usually so sad when I wake up and realize it was a dream. The love I feel in dreams surpasses anything I’ve ever felt in waking life. Actually that goes for most of my experiences and emotions in my “dream life”. This is what I call it, because I often visit the same fictional dream places over and over. My dream life seems to mimic my waking life, except with much richer, more beautiful and inexplicable people, places, and things.

"We die alone." Somehow, i got the impression this film has a great similarity with Jacob's ladder. I think Donnie initially died when the engine hit his house. The rest of the alternative reality is an echo of his consciousness summing up his understanding of life.

yep I imagine that too somehow, he is in transition between life and death and his dreams is representing how he made peace with his own world. Difference is jacob's ladder uses the biblical approach for the plot.
I like this interpretation.
This is my read of the movie as well. I see all the characters and plots as Donnie’s consciousness coming to terms with his own death and trying to find meaning in his life and it’s end at a young age.
The music in this movie is still haunting me to this day. It's so broody and edgy, but also moody and feel-y. It makes the movie feel like a daydream and it is in some aspect.
Best soundtrack ever! Every song is just perfect and the music makes the movie so much better!

In the scene with his therapist telling him that the pills are placebos, she's turned around so we never actually see her face, or her mouth speaking those words. Since one possibility is that Donnie had hallucinations, it's possible this was an auditory hallucination, reinforcing Donnie's belief that he wasn't really ill and the apocalypse was coming. I think her being turned away in this moment was done on purpose for that reason, so that we still couldn't be sure one way or another

This is a dark and beautiful film. Truly beautiful. I get tears in my eyes during the ending. This is more than just a film to me. The idea of alternate timelines and universes is so fascinating and the emotions and music in this film are surreal yet very human. I would say that Donnie Darko is so much more than just a film. It is enlightenment.

I tried to watch this movie a few years back, didn't interest me enough in the beginning, so I didn't complete it.. then I watched again today, boy was I for a treat.. it's so complex, like a coin with more than 2 faces. Gonna watch it again tonight. It's a true masterpiece.

I watched this as a teen when my uncle recommended it to me and I was blown away. I’m 31 now and I keep coming back to watch it over and over again. A true classic glad you gave it a chance.
I don't think that Donnie necessarily had to die in the end. Let me explain: look at Grandma Death, she wrote the book about time travels and it's plausible, if not sure, that she had the experience of a tangent universe in order to write such a detailed analysis of the subject. But she's still alive in the real world after the destruction of her tangent universe and she represents a proof that death can be escaped even as a Living Receiver. The downside is the fact that she has become mad and crazy.
Back to Donnie: soon after he saves the world in the tangent universe, he returns to his bedroom in the real world knowing what is going to happen and he is left with two choices: escaping from the room and live or remaining in his bed and die.
I think he chooses death because he understands that everything that has happened to him in the tangent universe will never happen in the real world either in the same way or at all. Therefore, having also seen the madness of Grandma Death, he decides to die in order not to follow her example and also in order not to suffer because of the discrepancies from his memories from the tangent universe (notably, his love story with Gretchen) and the reality that he will have to live in.
Stefano Cacciamani I believe he was just dreaming because he had already had mental problems before creating this tangent Universe in his mind. I also believed that he had chosen death not only because he realized the tangent universe was just an illusion, but he had physically already experienced his own life in another universe

That's a really interesting interpretation. If you consider that all of this may have just been a construct in his mind its possible to interpret this as that there really wasn't an engine at all and Donnie committed suicide due to his mental issues.

If you wouldn't have said that, I would have had a stronger argument against you. But because you said "the same way," I somewhat agree.
Now, i have a question though.
Lets go to the near end of the movie, right when all the past events of the alternative (tangent) universe come rushing back to Donnie on his bed, right before the plane engine hits his room to kill him.
First Question: at that moment, when he is in bed after laughing and rolling over (I'm assuming to go back to sleep), does he *remember* all the past events that he was just previously involved with in the tangent universe? I think at this point, we would both say yes.
Observation: if he *does* in fact remember everything right before he about to die in his bed, again, at this point, you would say that it doesn't matter. Donnie chooses to kill himself because he knows things wont be exactly how they were in the tangent universe. Correct?
But to that I ask, yes, things wont be exactly the same but, can they not be pretty close? As in, if he still remembers bumping into Gretchen in the tangent universe, why can he not simply meet up with her again in the real universe? I mean, she shows up for class - hes bound to meet her again anyway.
Further, he still remembers that one dude being a ringleader of a child porn chain, no? Can he not still, on that very night he was going to in the tangent universe, burn that dude's place down again to expose him?
But i want to humor you.
I want to go deeper with you in all this. Because you bring something interesting to my mind that challenges my argument towards you.
Are the things we humans go through in life truly make us what we are today? I mean, I know that sounds like a 'duh' question, but sometimes I don't believe we *really* believe that.
Like when someone says if they could go back in time and change one thing. But in going back and changing even that one thing, would that not make you an entirely different person?
I mean, think of all the situations (there are possibly millions, maybe billions) where it took one seemingly small variable for such a situation to occur.
For example, you've made bad grades and have to bring home your report card to your parents. They've said that if you bring home a D, which you did, you cant use the car for going out this weekend. But you just met this girl, and you think she really likes you and you've already kind of "pre-scheduled" a date with her over the weekend. You ask your parents and they, at first, say lean to saying no. But then, at just that moment, at just that small frame of time you ask again; this time, with a slight, oh ever so slightly softer tone and pitch and rhythm in your voice - just enough to win them over; they end up saying yes you can use the car.
That nano-second of time mixed with the complexities of human communication resulted in *that* moment. To go back in time slightly before you asked, would it even be possible to pull off such a tone and pitch when you ask? And if not, wouldn't we say the rest of what happens there would forever be different? That you, you would be different?
So, in that sense, I can see why you would think Donnie would choose death over the unavoidable difference he would be as a person if he would have snuck out and avoided the crash.
I guess, my only *REAL* question would be: why then was he laughing right before he died? What was so funny about the thought that you lost the only real chance you had for companionship (Gretchen)?
C_Norman93 there's also the possibility that right after Donnie travelled back in time, he forgot everything that happened, just like all the others. This would make sense, considering that he was laughing and rolling around in his bed. This implies that he might just be thinking that it was some dream he had while sleeping, and doesn't remember that the events occurred at all. And that's why he goes back to sleep. Maybe I'm wrong idk
i think what really happened was that Donnie met this grandma in the parallel universe and notin primary universe so she could be one of the manipulated dead to help Donnie out...
I studied media for 2 years and I had to watch hundreds of movies (usually best of the best) but after Donnie Darko - I can't watch anything. Everything else just sucks in comparison. I think Richard Kelly unconsciously hit a bingo, he had some sort of an inspiration that he can't repeat and even can't explain. This movie cannot be understood just by using logic.

Whenever I hear drew barrymore scream in this film I shed a tear or two. That scream is truly primal. My favourite part of the film is after she loses Her job and she walks out of the school and briefly gets stopped from passing Through the door by the American Flag sticking out of Her personal belongings. That was so profound. Great Film!

In my humble opinion, Drew Barrymore is a genius. Sure, she has done some material that might seem a bit frivolous but when you look at the projects that she has been an integral part of producing, directing and writing, as well as acting, it's really quite an astounding body of work.

It's purely because of its auditory beauty, or phonesthetics, and meant to be pronounced with the British soft R, like "Sell a daw." Although I think your point on nostalgia and individual experience is also right, the scene in Ratatouille was a madeleine moment taken from (or inspired by) Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time, whose central ideas are on individual experiences, memory, time, and youth.
I wanna like, fall in love with someone so that I can introduce them to this movie which is a really weird thing to say about a movie where a dude in a giant rabbit suit tells a kid how to manipulate a parallel universe so that a jet engine doesn't fuck up all of time but at the same time it's perfect

what I thought the end was was entirely different for this I got it all wrong I thought it turns out in end he dies by jet engine and he trys to save universe and to do so he has to follow the bunny's orders but it turns out the 28 days were the days until he died and it was showing the life he wish he had if he had 28 days left in his life and the old lady in the film was also dead and somehow she was trying to warn Donny that's why she only communicated with him once she had the letter that's what I got from it
I think some people understand it better because they know at least a little bit about philosophy. It's alright if you don't understand it now though.

Dude that’s what I was thinking after I saw the movie. Still love the game but it’s really just “Donnie Darko” with more sunrises.
That being said, while if you interpret it the same they can be similar, I see Donnie Darko as saving the world or something along those lines while Life is Strange is about saving one person. This is with the idea you think LiS is about cherishing what you love and is about giving Chloe the life she never had. Then again the same could be applied to Donnie but I think he’s more of a savior so the point doesn’t connect for me.

I mean I know Chloe has to die to set the university straight, I just always thought of it as her life sucks so this was as she said, some kind of going away present or consolation prize. Like the universe felt bad it had to kill her so it gave her a second chance to be with her best friend/love, fix unfinished business, and let her grow up. Kinda similar to how this movie can be interpreted actually which is I guess why you can draw comparison.
I agree Max grew as a person and that was the point too, the Chloe part just jumps out at me personally and it what I took from the game most. I kinda like the idea this was kinda about Chloe and Max is just the means by which she can do it.
In the end it’s a form of art though with many things that can be taken out of it. I don’t mean you’re wrong I’m just saying what I see.

Donnie Darko is a metaphor for the Jungian shadow. Time travel/predestination paradox movies in general end up being a metaphor for how trauma causes us to "run in circles," repeating our past conditioning unconsciously, over and over again. Often forming around early childhood woundings, these defense mechanisms are designed to keep us safe, yet keep us stuck in our own "very very mad world." We know not what we do. In the East, they call this the wheel of karma. Unconsciousness = fate. A broken record. Yet, consciousness = free will. Choice. Jung said, "If you do not make the unconscious conscious, it will determine your life and you will call it fate." From a Jungian perspective then, Frank is the shadow - the unconscious part of our own mind that has not yet been triggered into a future that is fated to be if not made conscious. As Donnie, metaphorically representing the ego, "sleep walks," he begins to integrate his shadow (i.e. do shadow work), simultaneously burning down the false adult world that represents the persona as he harnesses the power of the unconscious. The persona (mask in Greek), splits us in two - expressing a superficial image of what society says is "good," while repressing and denying what society assumes is "bad," which ironically persists underneath the surface in shadowy form, as personified by Jim Cunningham's double life. Kitty Farmer especially represents the tendency of the ego to deny and project onto others, as she judges others who "succumb to the path of fear," while compensating for her own fear with a persona of false righteousness and love. As Donnie continues his awakening journey, he embodies the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas: "If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you." As he becomes fully conscious of his fate, everything accelerates. When he wrestles with the bully with the knife he says, "Deus Ex Machina. Our Savior," simultaneously pulling off the face mask to reveal the bully's true identity. In ancient Greek, apocalypse means "to remove the veil." When we finally become conscious that *we* are the one who pulls the trigger in our story, that *we* are the one who is guilty of what we judge others for, "It's the end of the world as we know it." The integration of the shadow is death for the ego. "We have discovered the enemy and he is us." Yet with this consciousness, comes choice. It is this saving grace, "God from the machine," that is the end of the deterministic wheel of cause and effect. Physical death in the film then is a metaphor for ego death. As a superhero, Donnie goes to his death willingly, choosing to surrender to his own fate and accept his destiny as he fully faces the fear of what was within him. Donnie Darko embodies the Christ motif in that he dies for the sins of the world - taking on Cherita Chen's earmuffs symbolically - and dies to save others who will now live because of his death. He dies for the sins of the world not just *literally* by offering himself as a sacrifice, but *metaphorically* by dying to the persona that would deny that this sin exists within *himself.* And it is in dying that we are born to new life - a creative emergence or "Cellar door" of possibility that can only come from the transformation of death and rebirth. No wonder Donnie laughs in the end, knowing he will die. In healing our own past traumas and the endless loops we get stuck in, in dying before we die, the end is just the beginning. All things change when we do. "I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to."

This story would've never been as great as it was if they hadn't casted the actors that they did. Every single actor did a phenomenal job. As long as you have an effective (understatement for this cast) cast, the the story will be told fluently and accurately. With this cast backing the story up, it just made it one of the best films in history. A story/film that allows people to interpret it in their own individual way, is a story/film that will no-doubtably get great reviews and admiration.

I personally never considered Donnie a potential unreliable narrator. If Frank were anything other than a 6' bunny then maybe I would have lol. I understand a connection between all things rabbit and Alice in Wonderland, but the more famously 6' rabbit, Harvey turns out not to be a hallucination at all. In knowing who Harvey is, I always saw Frank as a symbol that while people think Donnie's crazy, he actually just sees more than we do. For me, Frank as Donnie's Harvey ensured that his visions were a reality. This movie does a great job of showing how set-in-their-ways adults can be with their thinking. The more we know, really just means, the less likely we are to admit we're wrong lol. Great movie, and great analysis.

Also Drew Barrymore was a total snack for the eyes in there.

When I saw that movie in HS it left such a strong impact that I had nightmares of being in a room destroyed by a crashing airplane. I was upset that I didn't understand the symbolism of the film. This film will always be one of my favorites!A good friend showed me this film, he was obsessed with Donnie Darko and a few years later he committed suicide.... at his funeral they played the song Mad World, it was sad and beautiful at the same time.

It's interesting that I read in a spirituality book that serious mental illness, like schizophrenia, is experienced by very sensitive people who are in touch with life either in another dimension or they are processing trauma from a past life.
Either way, for me, it is one of the only movies to treat a person with schizophrenia as a hero. And it asks us to consider that MAYBE there is more to this reality and the purpose of it than we are actually aware of. ...I like the compassion in this movie above all else.

The sad truth is that comments like this or the book you read are dangerous misinformation that feed into the schizophrenic's dillusions of having a unique mission or actions carrying special meaning. Schizophrenia is the result of pathological structural and physiological malfunction in the brain. They have periodic releases of large amounts of dopamine in the brain that makes them feel as if something of great significance just happened. They then search for something to ascribe this importance to. This pathology also makes people 'sensitive' to impulses as they are unable to process information normally. Everything you describe is a result of the pathology, not the cause.
I know a schizophrenic who once told me that a six inch tall Jesus appeared in his living room dribbling a basketball. That's not a sensitivity or an altered experience. It's an illness.

I think this movie is about a teenager who struggles with schizophrenia and believes in these weird theories. But in the end his crazy ideas actually seem to be real, so the viewer can understand how Donnie feels. Because he also can't tell what is real and what isn't.

I saw the liquid spheres once while on psychedelics. It was a long time ago, but they do exist. People literally followed them without any thought at all.

This existence in this reality is controlled by things far beyond our understanding and I felt like I had a glimpse into something that's always there but we just can't sense with our limited senses.

Our senses can only pick up on such limited amounts of information. So much is happening around us all the time that we're just oblivious to.
I don't know for sure what I was experiencing and I can't say it was even real.
All I know is that in that moment I completely believed that I was given a glimpse of something more. That either our choices were creating trails of energy. If someone walked in a straight line, I could see energy spoting spiraling in a straight line in front of them. The strangest thing was the energy that was "pulling" them would change directions before they did. It made me question how in control we really are.
The only thing I know for an absolute fact is that there is far more to this reality than we understand and to think we have it all figured out is what's really insane.....

That's an awesome analysis. There is no definitive explanation for Donnie Darko - it just is. Richard Kelly probably doesn't explain it because he honestly can't. This movie is a beautiful work of art, and an incredibly moving teen love story. It's one of the greatest movies of all time. Damn, I just want to watch it again! (For about the 100th time!!)

My Theory: The tangent universe came into existence due to Cherita Chen writing about Donnie Darko.
It’s revealed that she had a book, seemingly made by her, with his name written on it. It looked big enough to be a novel.
Cherita was on the outside looking in, observing everything happening with everybody else, especially Donnie, as his name’s on the cover of the book (making it presumable that the book is about Donnie)
She meets and/or hears of the same people that he meets and she reads the books that are being lived out in the story. As an outsider she has the time and desire to write about a different version of the world inspired by Donnie.

The information about the manipulated living and dead were new to me, as was the information about how he needed to save x universe (reality) through actions in y universe(tangent). It draw a clearer line as to why the events unfold.
My interpretation of the movie was very similar, and I’d like to share my thoughts to see if anyone else viewed it in a similar way.
My theory was that Donnie was stuck in a space/ time continuum (28 day loop) and the movie we are watching was his realization he has been (or eventually will) repeating the 28 days over again and can only put a stop to it by staying awake and making sure he dies by the plane engine. If he goes to sleep all will reset for frank will save him by helping him sleep walk, and the events will reset once more.
The movie is his journey through a time loop in which he finally uncovers what’s going on (the perfect simulation one might say).( my English isn’t so well, so it’s very hard to express my thoughts so I’ll stop here lol)
The mirror was a portal, the ocean was the subconscious, the eye was both the character & the narrator (Donnie & his higher self or God- Donnie being creator able manipulate space/time/matter)
I've never seen it, but even just listening to it and seeing the themes and the overall message and the struggles of the main character give you a sense of disgusting dread and a profound sense of melancholy that really can only be explained as a feeling in your gut that makes you want to walk through fire while holding the ones you love. It's a terrifying masterpiece that really takes you out of your own world and thrusts the values people have instilled in you into a chasm that makes you realize that you are the only one who can truly decide how you feel and why you feel it. Anyway that's just my interpretation

Donnie Darko is probably the cleverest, most complex film plot ever devised (with the possible exception of Mulholland Drive). It truly is a masterpiece of cinema, and this review really does it justice. You need to watch this film 3 or 4 times to even begin to get a handle on it and the main mystery is why Richard Kelly didn't go on to become one of the all time greats. Amazing director, amazing film, amazing review.
i can watch this movie so many times but still love it with every watch
Ultimatly, as it's summed up at the end here, it's great story about how people we meet and interract with have an influence in our life and theirs. Events that are particulary important at the end of adolescence and start of aduldhood.
I just watched Donnie Darko again now as an adult and parent. I also saw it knowing a bit more about it. The point being there was such a difference in emotional and mental impact this time around. I cried more.
This is my favorite movie of all time. And is such a quotable movie
some people just want to see what happens when they tear the world apart
I think the beauty of this movie was to enjoy all the theories shifts happening, all of its layers happening at the same time and the impossibility of getting an answer at the end of the movie.
When I first saw this movie I was in a super bad place it was my junior year of high school I had to get my own apartment and work every single day and every hour I could to pay rent, to stay at my high-school that all my friends went too, friends that would slowly cut me off one by one for no reason just kinda like I faded away like donnie in the end and honestly this movie messed me up for a bit I don't know why it just really hit deep his family felt exactly like mine fighting but still had some love and even a love interest,same as me but I don't know why it happened it's been 2 years since then and things are good, I just happened to look at the dvd box today on my shelf and then this popped in my feed. Strange.
I had a similar experience with Mr. Robot. I was in a very dark place at the time when I watched it and it was reflecting my reality. The sceneries were gray and sad. Tall buildings and busy people running around and that was exactly the reality around me at that time and I felt so sad and alone. Mr robot was taking morphine to cope with his reality and I was taking amphetamines to cope with mine. That show really broke me and I stopped watching it after I finished season 1. Safe to say things are a lot better now but I haven't watched the series again and probably won't in the future. :D you should give donnie darko a second chance, though. :)

But seriously, that was a cigarette, not a joint. From what I recall Donnie never takes any drugs.
What I still don't get is:
1. Sam (the younger sister) attending what appears to be a high school.
2. While all the Darko's are in grief in the end, the mom doesn't seem to show any remorse.
krisbudz14 I believe it’s a private school that goes from kindergarten to twelfth grade .
And i thought that at first but you can see the way she is shaking and smoking her cigarette, people show grief in different ways.
She’s grieving all right! She looks like a woman who isn’t a smoker but has one to calm herself.
The tension between the mom and donnie that is set up throughout the film makes me feel like she is feeling relief and guilt at the same time.
I think she’s broken down from his death and when she sees Gretchen she gets a split second glimpse of what Donnie really did

What causes the tangent universe is Donny’s sleepwalking, a symptom of existential unrest (which the latter half of this video beautifully exposes). He was supposed to be in bed when the engine fell, which is why the last we see of him is smiling while getting comfortable to fall asleep. He is at peace with his destiny, which he could only access by experiencing the events of the tangent universe. Whether it was by telekinesis, as this video suggests, or time travel (I’d like to think Donny himself fell in the wormhole, making Donny the “artifact that needs to be returned”, not the engine), the central theme I find in this film is the very old notion that you can’t escape your fate.
I remember seeing this movie when I was 17 and was hanging around the wrong crowd. I didn’t get the movie until seeing it today. Crazy how your 1 decision away from a different outcome to your life… I just recently bought a frank necklace and don’t plan on taking it off my neck anytime soon 💙🙏🏽
This movie is on a completely different level than any other movie out there ..... what a masterpiece

Maybe it's highest time to change the way you live if you have so little time. And then one day (maybe not in this life) you'll come the conclusion:
Time takes too much time (Moloko) and simply wish to merge with the timeless One.

I was a young teen when this movie came out and it hit me pretty hard, thanks for this video and bringing back all those memories!
Every time I watch Donnie darko the next day the 1st tears for fears songs comes on the radio, and “when people run in circles it’s a mad world” I feel that’s a reference to the cycle, the daily cycle and routine that most common ppl go through everyday in daily life and it’s endless and frustrating
