As a fellow owner of a pure red WRX, wishing you well! You've got some skills to diagnose as much as possible. Hit up Smeedia, he lives and breathes Subaru...
Similar thing happened to me on my old lowered duramax. Was at a course away from home and took a hard corner and the turbo whistle turned into turbo whine. Pulled the inlet and found a halfway eaten spring clamp. Had to overnight a new turbo and do the swap in a hotel parking lot during a blizzard. I then sold the truck for my wrx lol.

EXACT same thing happened to my 17’ a month ago. I think I compressor blade cracked and hit the other ones. Ended up sending it to boostlab and they rebuilt it for less than 1000 dollars.
@@ronfromportland I did not… I took the intercooler off and inspected it and didn’t find anything. But it’s been running great for about 2000 miles since.
sounds like time to get a stand alone ecu, to not use cobb for tuning. so it can be ok for tgv delete, catless, etc. Have you thought to go that route? may as well upgrade the turbo if replacing it! and fueling to go along
Oh yeah, I thought of every possibly option. Sticking to OEM is the simplest/cleanest way at this time, at least for me. An upgraded turbo + fueling does sound good though!
end of the day its all money I guess. and super boo on cobb for their whole green speed crap! making it difficult for most people, what they want, so they can't have or have to really spend to get there
@ronfromprotland did you ever get your turbo fixed? If not I have have used one you could have, it just sitting here. The only problem it has is the bolt broke on the exhaust manifold. SO, I drilled it out but you could easily use it for parts you would just have to pay for it to ship. If you want we can dm or text or what ever so I can show you. Figure it be better to just give it away then try to sell it. Let me know if your interested.
Ah man, I just got mine fixed, otherwise I’d be all over it! Thank you for that though, I really appreciate it! Question is, why do you have one laying around?! 👀 😏
@@ronfromportland hey no problem, I prefer to help where I can. Also, haha (long story short) cause I broke a stud (that holds the header to the block) when installing my Grimmspeed header. I Couldn't get it off at the time and didn't want to have 3 of 4 studs holding it on. At the time it was a cheaper option to buy a new OEM turbo. So, now I hold on to the old turbo for parts in case of something like what you're dealing with should happen.
@@ronfromportland I don’t think they found anything. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary after they replaced it, so your guess is as good as mine.
You could get it running, put back to stock, and get a 2023 WRX.. LOL. Sorry to hear about the turbo, very odd on what happened with that. Something did get down in there and did damage to the turbo, question is how? and what was it.
Trust me, this has seriously crossed my mind! Driving the Outback with the FA24 is so nice! I keep imagining what a sedan with that same motor would be like 😏. That’s the question I keep asking myself. I don’t know how anything could have gotten through the intake. The only other possibility I could think of is overboosting, but that’s a stretch.
That's always tempting but given the markups dealers are charging and the controversial looks of the VB makes it kinda iffy. Also, if the car is already paid off, you will now have another monthly expense.
@@ronfromportland You do have a very nice red WRX.. Get it running and hopefully no more issues. I just would like to know what the heck happened to the turbo blades.
I will follow ur process. I hope everything goes well! I have a fbo 2021 wrx! I got it tune after greenspeed so I'm always going to have a check engine light so I get sketch out driving sometime.
What did you monitor to confirm it was running lean? And surprising how those broken fins didn't make any noise when they broke off the turbine. Hopefully the shop can repair it for you in time to enjoy it since it is boost season ✌

It's just that one nut, is a Swivel 100% neccesary?
PB blaster and a lot of patience. I didn’t have to use a swivel on mine, just a long extension. Would be a good idea to have an extra set of nuts and studs on hand, Grimmspeed sells the kit. I installed the Perrin Turbo Bracket which made removing/installing easier. Probably something to consider in the future. Good luck man! ruclips.net/video/8JuIuhE6jdY/видео.html

Hey Ron, what do you think may have been the culprit? Compressor surge? Turbo flutter? Do you think this may be related to the BPV + turbo inlet that you have that was added after the tune? After seeing your issues with the GS BPV and how it was leaning your car out I’m suspicious that their defective BPV may have contributed to your issue. Share your thoughts. I want to add those two parts to my build but not ready for a retune..
I think something may have gotten in through the intake tube when I was making adjustments to it. It’s hard to say though. The turbo inlet has been solid for me. I highly doubt the cause was the GS BPV since I only had it on the car for a short amount of time.

Sounds like you made a really solid choice. Being able to do a straight "swap" will be much better than having to go through getting a whole new tune.
