Pinecone fish (Monocentridae) at Berlin Aquarium. 23/08/2021

Pinecone fish have photophore immediately below eyes, containing symbiotic bacteria that produce a pale light. The photophores are thought to play a role in attracting the zooplankton upon which the fish feed; intraspecific communication may also be a use for the light.
