No not a boring video. These Japan videos are amazing especially as Japan is right at number one on my bucket list! Really enjoying them, keep em coming Gabe!
What a lovely, quiet, and safe ski resort town. I'm sure during the winter months this town comes alive with tourists. I don't think any younger generations live in a town like that I think it's mostly older generations living and maintaining.
It is a Shinto shrine. If you see a torii⛩ at the entrance, you can assume it’s a Shinto shrine but not always. Some Buddhist temples and Shinto Shrines can be sharing the same area. Since both religions are quite different from monotheism religions like Christianity and Islam, they are quite lenient each other, just like you’ve seen in Koyasan. Additionally, those straw festoons called Shimenawa are used only in the Shinto shrines. Thank you for exploring Japan. Enjoy Hokkaido!
I’m sure other will comment, but if you see a ⛩, it’s called a torii (鳥居) and marks the entrance to a Shinto shrine. It can get confusing because Buddhist temples often exist next to shrines. Hokkaido is home to the indigenous Ainu First Nations people, and there’s some good museums, in Asahikawa, if you backtrack there. The real draw for Hokkaido are its spectacular national parks, some of which have fantastic day hiking and natural onsen pools in the forests. May be a bit hard to access via public transport but worth considering. It’s really an island that requires time and a rental car.
That is a cute peaceful town. I am surprised and amazed how well structured and organized towns and public transportation are in Japan. It seems to be well suited to humans. A well organized society. Who wouldn't wanna live there?
The deer you saw are called Yezo Sika deer. Also be careful in Hokkaido, bears are in many rural areas. There are signs albeit in Japanese of course to warn people.
Furano is popular for its Lavender flower fields in Summer only. There is nothing more than some dairy and vegetable farms like those in Bakersfield, CA. It may be more interesting to visit many lakes in Hokkaido. You always find onsen spots around those lakes.
That hotel is an amazing find with a beautiful rooftop onsen. Surprising and very cool that you had it all to yourself! Excellent series Gabriel. It has brought back memories of my time in Japan. If you make it back down past Tokyo, I highly recommend checking out the Hikone area in Shiga. Excellent hiking and sukiyaki meals with Kobe style beef there. Cheers and happy travels from Salem, Oregon!
Wonderful tour around Furano City . I am thoroughly blessed to have watching your video series . I sure will travel to Hokkaido. Thank you so much for showing us the wild deer 🦌. I think a little bit different from the one I’ve seen in Nara Park . Have a great weekend!
if you come in Jan, you will experience a bit more Hokkaido winter scenery & activities especially going to Abashiri Icebreaker Ship, however it's only available from Jan to April. From your route, you may go to Wakkanai, the northernmost of Japan but there's not much to see at this time.
I think you already knew this but there's google, an app or, depending on your phone, you can hold the camera to the signs and it will translate the signs for you to tell you what the buildings are
Interesting to see a travel video from Hokkaido would love to check that area out next time I'm in Japan, but yeah I did hear about bear attacks there like other people said in comments so maybe get some bear spray. Cheers!
Thank you for showing us parts of Japan that we rarely see. Now puts a trip to Japan much more on our radar. How long can you stay there before visa runs out?
Interesting view into a small Japanese town... blessed by the forest creature and that car is really awesome! I love that water dump onto the shoulders and back bet it's like a power massage and very sedating. Curious crawl showing micro aspects of the area--Love that approach!!!!
The place you visited was a Shinto shrine. Anyway, I love your videos. The best part is that you randomly visited several places without any pre-knowledge. So I could hear very honest and fresh impressions when you see new places and views.
7:49 I see the words Furano Shrine(富良野神社). Yes, I see it. That means it is a shrine. Most of the time the name is written above where you put your money, so just remember the kanji for "shrine"(神社) and "temple"(寺院) In signs and map apps, "Shrine⛩" and "temple卍" are used.
5:20 shabu shabu (Japanese hotpot) Towns/smaller cities in Japan are usually not many people around. The youth of Japan are moving to the main cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, etc. for work.
Gabriel, watch out for bear encounters when you walk through the woodland road! last year counted at least 8 serious injury cases including fatal accidents in Hokkaido...you know how big are those creatures.
It is easy to tell the difference between a shrine and a temple. Shrine is to Shinto while temple is to Buddhism. A dead man is going to be buried under the grave in a temple, whereas people go to a shrine to pray for getting something of good luck. There is a cemetery in a temple, but not in a shrine. You should remember one more thing that there is a Torii gate standing at the shrine entrance
Brilliant video as usual. What a journey this has been so far, thanks! Incredible how dead that city looks here, but it's part of the charm I suppose. I wonder where are all the 22,000 people at...
7 min that circular symbol is probably family Crest, every clan has or had those. Reversed Swastika aka manji is symbol of Budhism. See Blade of the imortal anime or movie.
Hu Gabriel, how do these hotels survive? There are no tourists around and it's extremely quiet, almost seems like a holiday. The wintertime must be a thriving business otherwise I don't see much else to do. I'm sure in the spring the lavender, poppies, lilies, and sunflowers make a picturesque place to be.
So glad you enjoyed Furano!! Regarding it being a ghost town - yes, it picks up in ski season. However, much of Hokkaido feels like a ghost town because of population decline. Hokkaido population has dropped to the level it was in 1970, while the capital of Sapporo has doubled in size over that same period. This means that the population of places outside Sapporo (smaller cities and the countryside) has fallen drastically. There are even small villages that have been deserted and are overrun with bears.
completely random but in tokyo there are some adult shops which are purely “anime” themed. I accidentally walked by one when I first visited tokyo and was like “damn wtf japan” when going in. It’s a quirky thing and probably not something you’d read in a travel guide, but i genuinely think it’s so unique and bizarre that it’s worth to check out. I remember even seeing a business man with a suit and briefcase in there browsing... super bizarre.
はじめまして As an avid skier, Japan is high up on a - want-to-go-list. Japow must be something special. Furano is probably a little less crowded by skiers during season than more famous Niseko, I guess. ありがとうございます。
Hey mate I’m coming next week. 🇯🇵 looking online I require 3 vaccines. I’ve had 2 so I guess I need the PCR Then says I submit on fast track? Then download another app for health questions How was your experience getting in? Same process??
I have three shots so didn't need the pcr test. I didn't have to do anything in advance. When you arrive then you go through a health screening process at the airport, just jumping through hoops basically. I forget exactly, I think they just asked questions, maybe take your temperature. So yeah I guess you'll have to take a pcr test unfortunately. Not sure about the app situation since I didn't have to do that. I hope it all goes smooth, good luck!
Great video Gabe.. My favorite foreign country is Japan...you may want to check out Oriental Pearl on youtube..she's an American who married a Japanese gentleman recently in Japan..She's fluent in Japanese and Chinese too. Anyway, keep up your labor of love.

Gabe, do have Google Translate installed? Works really well in Europe. Type in words or phrases or use your camera to translate menus or food labels. Really useful. Just have to donwload the language you are translating to/from.
1:53 this was playing on TV in a small town in Japan? So weird how global the corporate media is. The last thing I'd want to see on TV in a relaxing sauna.
I would be a bit unnerved walking around anywhere with NOOOO ONE to be seen. I would not feel safe, actually. But, then again, I'm an older woman and ... well, you are not, so.
Vlogging must be a terribly lonely life for months on end your in fantastic new countries but alone accepted you meet new people but that’s never going to compare with relaxing with family & friends!!..I feel very selfish say this but great vlogs especially in India & the Far East👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏

Totally.

I read that there is a population increase with the deer. At one time wolves were on the island and kept the deer populations in check
So glad you enjoyed Furano!!

Solid point. Although technically it's both, since a buck is a male deer.
