I don't really have a say in this since I'm 195 cm, but when I switched from my 26" to my 29er it changed my life. 29er is so great, I'm mostly doing rad commuting through snow and woods but damnit you roll with a 29er that's for sure.
I would have thought riders under 5'6" may find 27.5 or 26 more practical than 29 but so long as you're comfortable eg saddle not too high and you have some standover clearance your frame size and wheel size is really a matter of personal preference. You may be a taller rider who prefers smaller wheels or a shorter rider who prefers bigger wheels.
Here’s an old trick for punctures/gashes to tyres... get an old inner tube and cut a 4” or so section from it and keep it with your puncture repair kit. Use it to line the inside of the tyre where the gash is. Cheap and easy solution and will get you home.
To the 29er and short people question, Agree that there's no better way to know other than to try it yourself. perhaps at a shop or better yet, rent it for a few hours or a day. Personally, as a 5' 6" rider with short 28in inseam, I find the 29er to be too big. Even with a 27.5 2.3" tire, I find my ass rubbing the back tire from time to time. Granted, some of it could be rider specific like how much you like to lean back, etc. Another problem I ran into is maximum insertion for seatpost. I find that I physically can not get my seat low enough even with a 100mm travel dropper due to a bent in the downtube (unrelated to length of the seat tube/where the top of seat tube is). Some bike does come with an uninterrupted downtube, that may help, but it's definitely another potential problem to look out for. Again, you might or might not have the same experience and problems like me. Nothing beats trying it out for yourself. Just make sure you don't do impulse purchase after trying to the bike at a shop. Give it a few days, sleep over it, write down + and - of the bike on a piece of paper if it helps. If you still think you like it, go far it. And remember, there's no "better bike", just one that fits you, your style, and the terrain you ride in.
As a counterweight to this comment, I'm 5'5 and ride an XS evolink 140 29er and it's wonderful. I'm personally a big fan of 29ers. I have had the rear wheel try to eat me a few times though but that was mostly just my fault (bad technique over a drop mostly). I do relate to the seat post conundrum (stuck with the shortest 100mm dropper i could buy) but sadly that's not just a 29er issue. The next bike i want at the moment is the sb130 which is also a 29.

I really love 29ers and im like between 5‘6 and 5‘7 and my tire size is around 650b 2,25 inch of width. And still tho i feel like not having a proper XC bike while using 650B.
29 and being short depends on the design. I am 5'4" with a 29" inseam. Standover clearance was my biggest worry because I want to be able to put my foot down when the front end slides out. I went with the Ibis DV9 with 29" 2.6" wide tires. That was the only 29 I could find that I could put both feet on the ground with. I love the bike.
I found that an old tyre's side wall, cut up in smaller sizes, works fantastically well for side wall cuts before putting in the tube! If you dont have that, a folded bank notes works well as well.
M4 thread pitch is the same at 0.7mm for all fits. Variations in pitch do not appear untill you reach M8 sizes for standard threads as there is not enough material, generally, for such variations so, yes! A longer pin will fit your pedal as long as the thread size is the same!
29er can feel a little bit of a wrestling match if not tamed well on the trails, if you do more jumps i suggest go for a 27.5 inch wheel. Btw im 5'10 been testing 26,27.5 and 29er for a year. but i ride a 26er trail bike 😂
Crank bros pins are m3, o.5 thread, i emailed recently as i bought dmr pins hoping theyd fit, they didnt. crankbros advised the above and advised 12mm length max. 10mm as standard
With regards to the tyre slash repair. In Aus I have used a $5 note to retain a tube short term. It also has the side effect of motivating you to change it when you get home to get your $5 back. Probably wouldn't work in countries with soft paper money...
To answer the 700c tire equivalent question (we had a similar question before haha): 700c would have same ISO as 29er (rim size/external diameter of the rim), so you can run a really skinny 29er tire on a 700c rim. But, if we measure the external diameter of an inflated tire (aka wheel), a 700c is much closer to a 27.5. This is due to a 650b wheel having a larger volume, thus both height and width increases. In short, 700c rim = 29er rim 700c external tire size = 27.5/650b 700c frame will have better luck converting to 650b wheel
Totally agree with jay, just done the very same upgrade 29er wont have enough room btween chainstays as you increase the overall diameter of the tyre going 650b is a slightly smaller wheel so you get more room for the wider tyre. Ive gone 27.5x2.1 everything fits👍👍👍
I am 5’2 and i ride a 29er no problem. I race Xc for my high school team and there are some people on my team that are the same height as you and ride one. But it all goes down to personal preference.
I have a bad back & was given the OK by my doctor to ride a bike again... I'm 5'7" & had the choice of a LARGE or MEDIUM sized 27.5+ Cannondale Cujo 3 MTB & II chose the LARGE... I loved the stability it gave over the MEDIUM & haven't looked back! btw: love yer channel!
I'm 5'4" Never gotten a chance to demo a 650b, but sometimes I have a bit of trouble lifting the bike and have to hop off of it if i get in trouble uphill.
I started with a 29 bike that was medium size, being only 5'8" found it to be a bit too big, even after installing the shortest stem I could find 35mm, bought myself a Canyon Spectral, and using their size selector tool, selected a small frame, that only comes in 27.5 so yeah, it could be too big for you, but as other have recommended, try a bike before you buy it, if you can do this on your local trails, even better, I find that I can ride my trails much faster and with more confidence using my small frame and 27.5 wheels
Apologies for jumping in like this but I want to ask you guys to come up with one of your educational videos on LACING up a fatbike wheel. I try to do most things myself to save money and youtube is not bad most of the time on just about everything and GMBN do them pretty good. Take a look now and you will only find one or two vids on Fat Rim Lacing. The best one is by an American but he hesitates and stumbles through it making it seem more complicated than I am sure it is. I have made an attempt at doing my own but my special edition Halo spokes are getting bent the rim scratched and I am unable to do the conventional 3 fold lace pattern as this is causing spokes to get bent forcing them up and over and through the rim plus the spokes will not reach what the American said said they should reach to. There has to be a BASIC set of MAXIMS to keep in mind like; Innwards spokes reach forward and outward spokes go backwards. On the other side of the rim do they follow the same idea or in reverse like a mirror flip to keep the spring forces in balance etc etc etc etc Thanks buds. Like all your vids and have them on my hard drive for future reference in times of need.
IMHO, as a short rider (5'2") with a disproportionately small inseam (I cry every time lol), it really comes down to the bike frame whether a 29er is feasible. Some are super sketchy, while others are passable -- and there aren't many entry level options as XS/S frame sizes tend to get fitted with 27.5 anyways. I ride a 27.5, which I'm happy with, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little jealous of other riders tall enough to comfortably fit a 29er.
i'm 5'5 and have a 29er. the only shitty part about it is when i come to a complete stop. standing on the bike sucks and can be a bit embarrassing. but i wouldn't go to a smaller bike
I dont think your height has much to do with it. I am between 5-6 and 5-7. I have both sized bikes and can ride both without any issues. Your choice like for most of us would depend on how you ride also your suspension and tyre size.
29ers being for tall people is a horribly misunderstood statement that's been thrown around for years. It's not that 29ers are better for taller people, it's just that in regards to geometry, standover, pedal/toe overlap, it's a bit ore difficult to get a good 29er in smaller frame sizes, which has over the years been inverted to people thinking if you're tall you need bigger wheels. Total bollocks. If you're 5'8 and above you're going to have an easy time finding a suitable sized bike, regardless of wheel size. Just remember 29ers flex more, the wheels aren't as stiff and historically weren't as durable either. Not to mention the additional rotational weight etc. A tall person's bike can be built around smaller wheels, there's few limitations when working with smaller wheels. I think it's very stupid to assume they can't be.
#askgmbn hi should I get the nukeproof scout 275 or a full sus preferably from tredz bikes was looking at the Jamis Dakar but if you could find something better I have a budget of 1.5k thanks 🙏
You can get a much better bike second hand such as nukeproof mega (older version) or a full suspension with a good spec but the scout is a brilliant bike????
I'm 5' 7" and I bought a 2019 Cube Analog 16" 27.5 a few months ago. With the seat at the right height for pedaling properly I find the bike to be slightly too high when I want to put my foot down while on the saddle when I am stopped while commuting.
On the other side of the coin, are taller wheels advantageous to bigger guys? I'm 6' tall with a 32" inseam and generally gravitate toward taller bikes.
I’m 6”3 , 35 inseam , xl still feels uncomfortable . I’m adjusted the seat all the way forward . How much bend should I have in my elbows ? I might have to get a different stem ?
#askgmbn I’ve got a specialized enduro 29er and I love ringing lots of jumps and fast downhill trails. At the moment I’m using gel tubes and I was wondering if there was a tire pressure recommendation you could give me to get lots of grip but no pinch flats. Thanks guys and keep up the good work
#askgmbn Hey guys, m 5'0 and my bike s a medium 29er. Could the size have something to do with why can't manual/ bunny hop. Is so what can I do? Buying a new bike isn't a option. Would I be able to buy a smaller frame and swap over the parts. If so what is an affordable hardtail frame with a straighten line from the headset, along the top tube to the seat tube and then along the seat stay to the axle
#askgmbn I am training for an Enduro event at a chair-lifted bike park with lots of very intense descending. Last time I rode here, I experienced fairly bad arm pump, I don't really have this problem at other tracks but this one is long and fast. Are there any training exercises or other tips I can incorporate to minimize this at the race? I have 6 weeks to prepare!
Please help me. I am 5 ft tall and not a very confident mtb'er. I have a 27.5 mtb at the moment but looking at getting a XS 29er. Would you suggest I stick with 27.5? I don't fly downhill, kind of wear out my brakes and very cautious on single track switch backs so I don't know if I would benefit from a 29er?
Volume spacers decrease the air volume making the spring curve less linear. Compression controls the speed at which you use your available travel. I think.
#askgmbn Are wider tires on 17 mm rims more prone to squirming under lateral loads? The original 2.25 wide ones are in need of replacement, the grip really starts to improve around 24 psi but then they start to squirm and bottom out. There is plenty of room to go wider which I would like to do. I know that this problem probably has a lot to do with the quality of these tires but don't want to end up in a similar scenario. BTW mostly riding a combination of flowy technical trails on a tubeless conversion 26" hard tail on dry gravely trails.
#askgmbn i have an old 3x hardtail bike i bought second hand a while ago i cant afford a new bike so i was thinking of converting to a 1x to make it a bit better although i then need to spend a lot to buy a new casset, chainring, derailler etc. is it worth it or should i just save my money.
I suggest saving the money. I almost did that to my old hardtail 26er with 3x8 drivetrain. So glad my buddy talked me out of it. I had to wait a year to save for the new bike but it was well worth it. Still on a hardtail, but it's 27.5 with 1x11 and i love it.
Hey guys! Need help on selecting my new bike; Ideally for the type of riding I would like to do, the Santa Cruz 5010/ Specialized Stumpy seams to tick all the boxes. However, I'm a long term Identiti fan and love the look of the Mettle in grey. My question is; how much will having the extra 30mm of travel front/ rear hinder my riding on single tracks/ climbs and general riding around? Or what would you choose?? #AskGMBN
Hi GNBM, I am looking to enter some enduro events in 2019. I ride a 2019 Orange Crush 29er. Do you know which enudro events in the UK have hardtail specific categories? Thanks James
#askgmbn I've got a 26" XC hardtail and I am thinking of upgrading the fork. Would it be a good idea to get a 27.5" fork in order to put a thinner 27.5" tyre on the front with a wider 26" in the back. Compared to the video you did using 29" and 27.5" it could be better as it may be more beneficial in a hardtail and the difference between 26" and 27.5" is smaller than between 27.5" and 29".
I am 5'3 and I just bought a 29er hardtail on Medium frame. I'm at ease when riding it but the minor concern is when I come to a stop, my feet aren't flat on the ground because of the tube height. Will changing to a 29er Small/16' frame resolve this? Thank you.
my friend has a 29er on a small frame specialized I think she said, she decided to get shoes with a thicker platform sole instead of another bike..so she can feel the ground beneath her feet when coming to a stop.. she cracks me up!
#AskGMBN i have a fairly old 26 inch mountain bike that cant go tubeless and in the last month ive had 3 valves split on my innertube, any ideas on what could be causing this?
Look for a sharp edge/burr around the valve hole drilled into the rim and sand it smooth. Check inner and outer edge! You may also put a cut piece of inner tube over the valve (like a shim/tight fit!), acting like a guard in between valve and rim. Is your tire moving/slipping on the rim? Since this might pull the tube as it is mounted it can put a fair amount on tension on the valve, eventually ripping it off. Clean rim and tire thoroughly to make'em stick to one another. Hope this helps. 🤙🏻

#AskGMBN I have a 2014 specialised status 1 which is stock everything, and the forks are a single crown and I want to upgrade to dual crown forks. But my forks are tapered, how could I fit a straight fork into a tapered headset?
#askgmbn New bike with a SRAM 1x12 and I wanted to get a bash guard and I'm seeing lots of combo chain + bash guard. It doesn't seem like a chain guard is needed with a 1x and narrow wide, but do you guys ever drop chains on a 1x to make the chain guard worthwhile?
#askGMBN. HI, I'm wondering if you can tell me how high an enduro MTB seat should be when fully lowered, and what constitutes to "too high" VS "normal" I'm asking because I ride a 2015 PIVOT MACH6 CARBON which has that notorious Crank Bros Kronolog dropper. Fully slammed, both feet are still 2 inches off the deck. Is this about normal for enduro riding or a bit too high? I'm 5'7" and ride the medium size. I'm looking into the OneUp dropper which will give me a bit more slamming ability but if you think my current setup sounds ok then I'll save my pennies.
#askgmbn is it ok to use an automotive brake cleaner spray on my mtb rotors/pads? i see a lot of conflicting info out there and, since i happen to have a can that i used to get rid of a hornets nest (much better than raid for my use), i thought i would ask someone with a bit more expertise than the average reddit user. if it helps the automotive brake cleaner i have is non-chlorinated, and mostly acetone based and dries quickly with no residue left behind.
I use automotive brake cleaner on my shimano slx brakes and it works great. I spray it on a rag first though and wipe the rotors. No ill effects after a year. Might mess up paintwork or other components if you just hose it down with the spray can. I'm not an expert on the subject though.
@@ianholmquist8492 my main use would be to aid in deglazing pads without having to buy straight acetone. little difficult to get as a private party in my town without raising eyebrows. besides i figured it would be easier than using that stuff too. also i would be removing the pads first so no chance of paint issues

im 5 3 i feel bigger for 27.5er
5'15 (157cm)...love my 29er (size 15"), but it hard to bunny hop, hard to manual....
With regards to the tyre slash repair. In Aus I have used a $5 note to retain a tube short term. It also has the side effect of motivating you to change it when you get home to get your $5 back. Probably wouldn't work in countries with soft paper money...
What country even has soft paper money?

I’m 5ft 2in and ride a 26in wheel, it fits me very well
To answer the 700c tire equivalent question (we had a similar question before haha):
700c would have same ISO as 29er (rim size/external diameter of the rim), so you can run a really skinny 29er tire on a 700c rim.
But, if we measure the external diameter of an inflated tire (aka wheel), a 700c is much closer to a 27.5. This is due to a 650b wheel having a larger volume, thus both height and width increases.
In short,
700c rim = 29er rim
700c external tire size = 27.5/650b
700c frame will have better luck converting to 650b wheel
Totally agree with jay, just done the very same upgrade 29er wont have enough room btween chainstays as you increase the overall diameter of the tyre going 650b is a slightly smaller wheel so you get more room for the wider tyre. Ive gone 27.5x2.1 everything fits👍👍👍
I am 5’2 and i ride a 29er no problem. I race Xc for my high school team and there are some people on my team that are the same height as you and ride one. But it all goes down to personal preference.
I am 5'3 & i ride 27.5 feel a bit bigger,before i ride 26, but feel to small . 😅
Doddy is the “bike whisperer” or maybe the “rain man” of the biking world ., the guy knows everything about bikes!
I was between the Large and Extra Large and went with the XL and I would never get anything smaller.
I'm 5'4" Never gotten a chance to demo a 650b, but sometimes I have a bit of trouble lifting the bike and have to hop off of it if i get in trouble uphill.
Chain tugs can be had from tartybikes for trial bikes so i don't se a reason they wouldn't fit a jump bike 👍
Im 12 5'2 and have a 29er trek marlin 5 fits me perfect
I started with a 29 bike that was medium size, being only 5'8" found it to be a bit too big, even after installing the shortest stem I could find 35mm, bought myself a Canyon Spectral, and using their size selector tool, selected a small frame, that only comes in 27.5 so yeah, it could be too big for you, but as other have recommended, try a bike before you buy it, if you can do this on your local trails, even better, I find that I can ride my trails much faster and with more confidence using my small frame and 27.5 wheels
4’ 11” is too short for a 29er
My daughter is 5”2” and has a 29er but is at the limit
Most smaller sizes come in 27.5 and not 29
i have a hardtail bike and a full suspension bike which is better for going fast jumping but still going through technical parts
Make sure you put #askgmbn if you want them to include your question.
I'm 4'2"...can I ride a penny farthing?.. Also, are drugs and hookers a good investment?
Only if you take the drugs whilst riding the penny farthing with the hooker as pillion.
Shoot dude, i think those are your ONLY options!
I love this wonder web and the comedians stuck in it.
Yes and yes
Depends on the drugs. If you are buying anything but meth while buying a hooker it's just a waste of money
I'm 5'6 29" wheels aren't so good for whipping it. 27.5 isn't bad feels more stable.
Can you fit a 27.5 wheels on 29er frame
IMHO, as a short rider (5'2") with a disproportionately small inseam (I cry every time lol), it really comes down to the bike frame whether a 29er is feasible. Some are super sketchy, while others are passable -- and there aren't many entry level options as XS/S frame sizes tend to get fitted with 27.5 anyways. I ride a 27.5, which I'm happy with, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little jealous of other riders tall enough to comfortably fit a 29er.
My problem here is I'm too tall and I want a 26er just because of how fun it is and how used I got to it lol
29 are good for speed but 27 1/2 are good for jumps and more technical stuff sick video
I’m 4’10 can I ride a 26’’ carrera or a Mafia??
normally, yes, the inseam could be too shorter to fit a 29er bike. 27,5 are more indicated for smaller people.
Agree sometimes bigger isn't better.
I have stuffed dry grass in a tire and it got me home ,I had a flat no tube pump or any thing
i'm 5'5 and have a 29er. the only shitty part about it is when i come to a complete stop. standing on the bike sucks and can be a bit embarrassing. but i wouldn't go to a smaller bike
Boardman pro full sus is good for 1600 without a sale
Not that halfrauds boardman
You can get a much better bike second hand such as nukeproof mega (older version) or a full suspension with a good spec but the scout is a brilliant bike????
@@sickcunt9386 The scout is an amazing bike
@@mozzymike7192 Yes if I was going down the new MTB route I would for sure get a nukeproof scout 🔥
I'm 5' 7" and I bought a 2019 Cube Analog 16" 27.5 a few months ago. With the seat at the right height for pedaling properly I find the bike to be slightly too high when I want to put my foot down while on the saddle when I am stopped while commuting.
But that has nothing to do with the wheel size and why do you even sit on the saddle while stopped?
On the other side of the coin, are taller wheels advantageous to bigger guys? I'm 6' tall with a 32" inseam and generally gravitate toward taller bikes.
I’m 6”3 , 35 inseam , xl still feels uncomfortable . I’m adjusted the seat all the way forward . How much bend should I have in my elbows ? I might have to get a different stem ?
Love and respect from Mumbai.. India
Maybe more of a tech question, but can you make any wheel tubeless compatible?
Pretty much
#askgmbn I’ve got a specialized enduro 29er and I love ringing lots of jumps and fast downhill trails. At the moment I’m using gel tubes and I was wondering if there was a tire pressure recommendation you could give me to get lots of grip but no pinch flats. Thanks guys and keep up the good work
I have 27.5 hard tail and an crappy fork on it. Do you think it is possible to put a 29 size fork on it? Thanks
Hi, i was wondering why rear hubs seem to make more noise (that cracking noise) the better or more expensive the bike is. LOVE the Channel
can I put a GoPro session under the peak of any open face helmets for mtb

Hey guys, m 5'0 and my bike s a medium 29er.
#askgmbn. the question about changing the jump bike axle to a qr.One On do chain tugs that come in a quick release and solid axle versions.
I’ve got a jeffsy 29er and I’m 5 5 and I keep hitting my rear tyre after drops.
Is there any difference between large 26er and a large 29er other than the wheel size?
Is the stand over clearance affected?
I'm 5ft 3 and ride a 2017 specialized stumpjumper fsr Evo 29r. I've yet to find another bike fit me as well as this one does.
What is the frame size? Because im planing on a custom build bike but i dont know what frame size to go for
We're the same height btw
#askgmbn I am training for an Enduro event at a chair-lifted bike park with lots of very intense descending. Last time I rode here, I experienced fairly bad arm pump, I don't really have this problem at other tracks but this one is long and fast. Are there any training exercises or other tips I can incorporate to minimize this at the race? I have 6 weeks to prepare!
Please help me. I am 5 ft tall and not a very confident mtb'er. I have a 27.5 mtb at the moment but looking at getting a XS 29er. Would you suggest I stick with 27.5? I don't fly downhill, kind of wear out my brakes and very cautious on single track switch backs so I don't know if I would benefit from a 29er?
dude im like 5.5' but i ride a 29er
What size is the frame
I’m 5,1’ and I ride a 29er lmao
@minekid so hows the ride?
#askgmbn what's the difference between:
Volume spacers
Compression
Often you can use both
Volume spacers decrease the air volume making the spring curve less linear. Compression controls the speed at which you use your available travel. I think.
@@krzysiu4003 isn't it the reebound? Because at my boxxer the compression acts like she gets harder
I'm 5,7" please recommend me best bike. 29' or 26 or 27.5 which will best suits me.

27.5
@@ianholmquist8492 yeah ok might do that, thanks for the advice
5'7" and only ride 29ers. The rollover beats any marginal maneuverability benefit.
Would a chromag hardtail be good for my style of riding cause I like to do downhill stuff and do jumps and im going to crankworx would it be ok
Hey guys! Need help on selecting my new bike; Ideally for the type of riding I would like to do, the Santa Cruz 5010/ Specialized Stumpy seams to tick all the boxes. However, I'm a long term Identiti fan and love the look of the Mettle in grey.

Hi GNBM, I am looking to enter some enduro events in 2019. I ride a 2019 Orange Crush 29er. Do you know which enudro events in the UK have hardtail specific categories? Thanks James
How do riders qualify/get selected for Crankworx, Rampage and the like?
#askgmbn I've got a 26" XC hardtail and I am thinking of upgrading the fork. Would it be a good idea to get a 27.5" fork in order to put a thinner 27.5" tyre on the front with a wider 26" in the back.
Compared to the video you did using 29" and 27.5" it could be better as it may be more beneficial in a hardtail and the difference between 26" and 27.5" is smaller than between 27.5" and 29".
So would it be all good to put maxxis 2.5 minions on 23mm internal rims?
No I think u need wider than 28mm for 2.5
I am 5'3 and I just bought a 29er hardtail on Medium frame.
