"Wetten dass... ?" was (and sometimes still is) a German TV show. It was basically a talent show, but with the twist, that celebrities who were invited could bet beforehand, if the talented person could do it or not and had to define something they would do, if they lost - typically donating to a charity or something similar. It was deemed the 'biggest TV show in Europe' during its heyday.
The "pig" at the end is a word play. The sentence ends with "Wir können stolz auf Deutschland sein" - we can be proud of Germany. The "sein" at the end of the sentence is very close to "Schwein" - pig. So - in a sense - they say that we CAN be proud, but if we do it to much, it turns into being a pig. I might be pushing to much into it though.
No, that‘s it…they completely reversed the meaning of being proud to be German…it was the sentiment at the time. Yet at 44, I‘m sick of being taken advantage by everyone and their grandma by using our remembrance culture to guilt us. ENOUGH!
I think you don’t. Because they also sing about we can punch people in the face and set fires. That referred to the anti immigrants crimes done by far right people in the 1990s.
We're not being taken advantage of because of remembrance culture, we're being taken advantage of because what we did in the IIIrdReich. We should be glad where we come from but pride is a double edged sword - it makes you think you are better than other people. Nobody can choose these things.
The line "and some think it's cool to be an asshole" is a reference to the song "Es ist geil ein Arschloch zu sein" (2000) by Christian, a Big Brother contestant.
US-American artists are also familiar with satirically intended “patriotic” texts. Unfortunately, the irony is not always understood. Take “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen, for example.
tbh I watch your channel for two reasons: 1) nice reactions about german music I enjoy 2) practise hearing your dialect to be ready for my studies in the UK XD
9:00 "Kanaks" is a slur against Turks. And Thailand was a well known destination for sex tourism back in the 1990s when this song came out. This may have changed since, I reckon.
Phuket was quite infamous for sex tourism back then. But that story was also massively pushed by the private media, because it got views on tv and sold magazines.
Sebastian Krumbiegel, the red-haired singer, once said about this song: “Controversial description of the state of our homeland. Die Prinzen have a critical opinion, and we express it quite simply simply without pointing fingers and without a big moral cudgel.”
German and English are both West Germanic languages. Means you can with a bit of pattern recognition hear/see a lot of common words. 'Das alles ist Deutschland' is like That all is Germany (almost every word is a cognate). And yep, the German 'Schwein' is the English 'Swine' (or pig). Just like the German 'Hund' is like the English 'Hound' (dog) ...
I don't like the idea of being proud of something you have no control over. Like the country you were born in. I can be happy about it, but not proud of it. Maybe it's something else to be proud of your country as a whole, but I'm generally not a fan of national pride.
would rly love to see you react to Alligatoah. he is onf of the greatest in Germany, a great Rapper /singer and a genius in writing lyrics (almost always with a meaningfull message). Maybe you can start with "musik ist keine Lösung" i can link you the song and the english translation if you want 🙂
Die Prinzen are hard to understand without background information. There is much ironic in that song. In that part where they describe how welcome everyone is and how beautiful Germany is,they are talking about Nazis. Michael Schumacher was a car race driver who drove for Ferrari. That was the reason why they sang he should drive Mercedes. "Wetten dass" was a big late night live show on TV.
Always love your reactions, even if the songs often are not my cup of tea :) And a little constructive pickyness: "Die" in german is more pronounced like "Dee", has nothing to do with death
To be fair to the Americans, many of their unofficial anthems/patriotic songs are also pretty critical or outright parodies. The average person just doesn't get it.
yeah, like the Magas who are stunned by all the bands of their favorite songs who are democrats. Rage against the Machine, is political now? WTF!? Idiots
To say "Die" correct you could say "Dee" which would sound phonetically german. "Prinzen" could be spelled "Prinsan", then it would be close to a german saying the band name.
Not foreigners…TURKS specifically. The only group of the early Economy miracle workers who failed to integrate, compared with the Italians, Greeks and Vietnamese they still have the most issues even in the third generation.
I would like to see you react to the band "Wise Guys". "Deutsche Bahn" or " Das Sägewerk Bad Segeberg" are my personal favourites. I think "Deutsche Bahn" would fit perfectly to your channel. 😃
Die Prinzen are not really my music, but as persons I like them very much. When it is important to give a statement they will be right there! Especially AGAINST right assh.. ✊️!
Paired with some of the visuals, they are clearly making fun of nationalism and nazism in some of the lyrics, but most are just funny and meant to parody German stereotypes, as well as the "German mentality".
the last part makes light of the fact that we still have a nazi problem in Germany. "we are particularly good at punching people in the face" -> there is senseless violence against individuals "You can trust us when it comes to starting fires" -> there have been racialy motivated cases of arsen to refugee shelters at the time this song was released "We like order and cleanliness" -> yes germans like that, but our right wing extremists (I call them nazis) try to justify the hate and violence they execute with the goal of order and cleanliness 🤮 "We are always ready for war" -> our military has some of scandals regarding members being extremely right wing "Greetings to the world, (I would translate this differently) finaly recognise that we can be proud of germany" -> In germany, national pride is widely associated with right-wing extremists "Pig, pig, pig..." -> this is them, calling the nazis still amoungst us, pigs
This is the first comment I write I´m German , please react to to Kollegah and/or 187 Strassenbande from Kollegah I recommend Legacy, it is a longet Song but it tells a story . From 187 Strassenbande I recommand Kokain it has a great Bass. I hope you have a lot of fun.
Die Prinzen were a band from the former GDR, and reunification was not a particularly smooth process... Many of the former GDR citizens felt left alone, especially those who could not afford to flee to the west. There were some major Neonazism surges, with some particularly bad attacks on refugee homes - one comes to my mind where the Neonazis set fire to a refugee home in Rostock and several people died, children included. It was heartwrenching, and I even was almost too young to understand how bad it was... Die Prinzen react to these attacks, for example with the lines about being assholes, punching people in the face or setting fire to everything. Also, many right-wing people complained against turkish immigrants ("Kanaken"; the main complaints being taking away "our jobs and our girls and treating them like shit", which was of course BS), but went to Thailand, which was a popular sex vacation destination back then. Talk about bigotry...

You left out one line. "We are always ready for war" ( Where the satire is getting is really getting obvious ). "We can be proud of Germany " is problematic. Back than there was a extremist right wing part ( "Neonz" [wich exist until now, but with has been painted in blue and changed violent behavior to the verbal equivalent..) . "Ich bin stolz ein deutscher zu sein" was their motto at the time, knowing that it was neutral *in itself*. The problem was (and is!) that in the 1980s and 1990s the phrase was increasingly used by right-wing extremist organizations and parties, especially in connection with nationalist and xenophobic slogans. It was also a frequently used expression in the skinhead and Neonz scene of the 1990s. ( Sorry, I had to replace some words due to the paranoid YT Filter )
The reason every band and song seems so unique to you is because you don't get the bland and boring ones recommended. We are presenting our best here 🫡 I'd like to request Rio Reiser - Alles Lüge

@@lynnm6413 they refer to „proud Germans“ who attacked refugee homes in the 90s. And they are rightfully titled as Schweine.

Sorry, but I felt the urgent need to point that out.

Nah, still going strong…if you know of any single man above 55 taking a trip to Thailand, you know exactly the reason why! Disgusting!

Technically it is the hawaiian(?) word for "human", but it got misused and corrupted in Germany.
