    THE Ulanzi DOF is an adapter that lets you use vintage lenses on your smartphone.
    the main interest of this adapter it to let you have the shallow depth of field and the bokeh of fast lenses on a regular smartphone.
    How does it work?
    the Light is focused on a tiny focusing screen inside the adapter, the smartphone camera records this focusing screen only.
    Bokeh
    The first thing that shocked me after 5 min of tests is that the out of focus bokeh balls that you can see out of the adapter are extremely boring.
    IF you compare it to the same lens adapted to a real full-frame camera, the gap is huge.
    the comparison speaks for itself ... by using the adapter you are losing all the character of each lens, and that's a massive problem.
    Dirt
    As the smartphone focuses on the screen and not using the back of the lens, you will get all the details of the focusing screen surface even wide open, meaning that if there is even tiny dust on your screen you will see it on your final video.
    Crop factor
    After playing around with different lenses, i discovered that there is a crop using the adapter.
    in this footage, i shot with the same lens at the same distance but i had to move back the tripod using the adapter to match the framing of the A7III.
    Usability
    Using the phone as a camera without a rotating screen is pretty annoying and it forces you to be always at the same height of the subject to check what you are doing.
    Conclusion
    I must say I am pretty disappointed by this product.
    Losing the lenses character is a big issue for a bokeh addict like me, So if you have a very low budget, and you don't mind getting grainy and dirty images without any real character this adapter is maybe a first step in the world of vintage lenses.
    if you are not a beginner then I would advise sticking to mirrorless cameras.

    A Few things,:
    1. "Tiny" Focusing screen is actually a Full frame Equivalent so I wouldn't call it tiny.
    2. The Bokeh Balls are less exciting for two reasons: Less DoF and the focusing screen not being glass like on a real sensor.
    3. Treat the focusing screen of your DoF Adapter like the sensor of a real camera which means you have to clean it.
    4. The image doesn't look bad but for it to work you need lots of light and a clean focusing screen. I use Vintage glass on my Smartphones all the time and They seem to work pretty nice.
    5. Set your Back focus on the Filmic App first and lock that in. That is the focus for the Focusing screen. Then you can adjust your Focus accordingly with the lens. That takes out the guess work.
    6. To address the texture on the focusing screen showing up on your final image. Shoot outside or in well lit areas. This will help in the overall image quality and limit the texture you are receiving.
    7. This isn't meant to be a Mirrorless or DSLR Replacement so please don't expect DSLR Quality videos and shots, In my use cases it gets damn close to it.
    8. With using regular lenses the Texture on the screen gives my whole shot a Unique Film look something I Really like and definitely adds character to the final shot.
    And finally, do not treat this like a DSLR Replacement. Its fun in its own right and you gotta go out and try it in different scenarios and enjoy the little quirks that it has. I for one am trying it out shooting 8K on my Mi 10 Pro and LG V60 and the results are very,. VERY interesting. And being able to upload my quirky shots straight to Instagram and my Photography groups online is a major PLUS.
    Thanks for reading

      Thanks for this quick run down of the issues with this video. The video raises more questions than it answers. Does Mathieu even use Filmic Pro, or were these results from using the native App? Why does he change distance instead of focus? That was a weird choice when the topic is bokeh. Matching the frame by moving the camera just seems like a weird choice.
      I think your most important point, though, is that these are different formats that are going to provide different results.
      But now I have a question for you. I have not yet used a DOF adapter. TBH, I wasn’t that impressed with footage I saw shot on the original beastmaster adapter. However, the mark II, as well as the Ulanzi adapter seem much improved-I’m speculating, but I think a lot has to do with improved screens and better registration. That said, I’m skeptical about the film grain look that you and some people are claiming. This might be true for stills, but I’m not seeing it in video. Motion picture film grain is kinetic, changing with each frame of film shot. (There are technical reasons for this having to do with film development being a chemical process.) I once did an experiment with a super8 camera, using tri-x pushed to 800 and 1600. The images were totally unusable for my purposes, but the grain (which was huge) danced. I imagine I could replicate this in software, but unless I’m missing something, I don’t think it’s possible to achieve “cinematic” (there’s that damn word) grain from the pattern on a screen.
      Whew, I got long winded! Sorry about that. But tell me, am I wrong? I’d be plenty happy to be wrong on this point.

    At $140US, I'm pretty sure you could get a used mirrorless and cheap adapter that would do at least as well, with better bokeh. Ulanzi are presumably just going after the people who were smitten by the "shot on iPhone" ads.

      Funny you said that, I actually used to own a used Sony NEX-3N Mirrorless camera with SELP1650 kit lens for that same mentioned price back in April or June 2015. It used to be my daily photography gear until I got myself a Microsoft Lumia 950*. Since then, the Sony kept collecting dust in the drawer until I sold it in December 2018.
      As much as I like this DOF adapter idea, I think I'll be staying with my Beastgrip smartphone mobile lenses. Not sure if I want to try this out.

    Comparing with an AIII isn't fair though. We all know that AIII takes better photos than iphone 8+. You should compare phone's footage with and without the lens to see if it's improves or worsen things.
    To a photographer it's obviously a silly idea to use a lens with a phone but if you are a casual and have a lens lying around, it doesn't hurt to experiment I guess.

    Phone cameras use a lot of software to enhance the images, I wonder what it's like when it's turned off (somehow). My guess is that the bokeh would look similar but that the rest of the image would end up very soft and noisy. Interestingly I've seen a review of the Zeiss lenses that were made to be adapted to phones and they actually looked good. But if you're paying Zeiss money you might as well spend it on mirrorless camera gear.

    • @zLobsterRus
      @zLobsterRus 4 года назад +2

      I mean, in manual mode you get both enhanced JPEG and untouched RAW. And RAW has much more noise, missed exposition (i.e. I shot at 1/250 and RAW looks like 1/500) and not so sharp. It's good to shot in RAW with good light and stabilization. Enhancements are realy good when used in right time and in right situation. In most cases for inexperienced user it will be much more work in lightroom/ps with bare RAWs.

    • @GregConquest

      I think the fundamental problem is optical, not digital. A focal-length reducer would work if you could take the lens off an iPhone, but the lens gets in the way. That's why the diffuser layer in a DOF adapter is necessary: the pre-existing lens assembly.
      Lens assemblies are made to focus onto sensors, not other lens assemblies. That diffusion layer allows two lens assemblies to work together, but it also "freezes" some optical effects, like bokeh.
      And the depth of focus is always near zero ad the diffusion surface is only micrometers thick. You cannot focus through that diffuser.

      I think you misunderstand how this DOF adapter works. There is no crop (or at least not a tiny one. The adapter contains a screen. The lens focuses light onto the screen to form an image. The phone’s camera focuses on the screen.

    Hey I was able to do it for $18 24 x macro lens then I got an adapter for the old lenses a PVC pipe which is about the same size glued the adapter to the PVC pipe calculated the distance glued the PVC pipe on the phone case after cutting the PVC pipe to size if you're using this setup hold the camera lens and the phone for better stability if you're willing you could take apart your phone tell you get to the sensor you won't be able to have Optical stabilization so you can pull almost everything out except for the sensor you will also have to have a different length for the pipe you might just be able to get away with attaching a micro micro 4/3 adapter anyway you can get closer to the sensor itself but the focal length of the lens we'll still make it so you're not getting the whole lens InFocus you'll have to use that macro 4/3 and probably still have to use the pipe to bring it back just enough but after you get that done you won't have to worry about the original Optics causing more problems remember all focusing is manual and you won't have any stabilisation unless it's digital 108 megapixel camera is great for this it's almost big enough that you don't feel as nervous 108 megapixel on the mi Note 10 but you could also use a budget phone or a phone that you're about to throw away to test this I will be producing a video on this sometime but if you want to go right ahead

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 4 года назад +2

      The weird screen is a workaround for a phone’s tiny sensor. The phone’s camera is collecting the image from the screen. The FF lens is using the screen as if it were a FF sensor. Think of it as taking an image of an image.

  • @fishwigy
    @fishwigy 3 года назад +1

    There is another way but you need to ruin your phone. Your full frame lenses will turn into telephoto but cctv lenses do fit in a normal fov. Basically you have to remove the lens of the camera module and you'll have an exposed sensor. I did it on a tablet but the sensor is too small because it is a very cheap model. I only need a way to mount the lens but the result looks promising.

  • @ThomasBrunkard

    The point of using a smartphone is that it is quick and easy. The newer iPhones are also pretty good for some things and I've used them for video B-Roll with great effect. Putting on this type of contraption makes them removes most of the benefit and makes them terribly unwieldy. Anyone that needs to make the leap up should just get a second hand mirrorless. A kit lens would be a marked improvement on this and you grow out your lenses over time.

    • @AdamBuker
      @AdamBuker 4 года назад

      You would have to manually focus with whatever lens you're adapting to the iPhone. The iPhone's camera only focuses on the screen in the DOF adapter. If you use a DOF you will have to manually focus every shot. Keep in mind if you need critical focus, you may have to stop down your lens's aperture, but that will reduce the amount of light coming in further, and with a DOF, because you already have some loss of light, you really don't want to stop down beyond f4 or f5 on your lens.

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 4 года назад

      You want to lock focus on the adapter’s screen with the phones camera. Then you manually focus the lens. Your phone’s camera is actually taking a picture of (or shooting video of) the screen.

      The bottleneck for resolution of this thing are the phone's lenses and the focusing screen. There light doesn't go directly to the image sensor, and the image quality just degrades as it passes through more layers.
      For landscape shots with your phone, just use your phone's own lenses(?) They tend to be quite wide anyway.

    Think you missed the point…. Smug insinuations aside, of course it’s not the same… It’s another tool in the toolbox… A dof adapter is not going to turn your phone into a dslr, nor will the lens behave the same as if it were on a dslr, only a fool would dare assume that it promised such… It merely allows one to experiment with lenses… it helps add its own character and has its own advantages and disadvantages…It’s well worth it to build one or buy one If you want one…if not, then don’t…

    5.62 crop factor, so your f1.4 wide open looks like a f8 lens.

    • @onegrapefruitlover
      @onegrapefruitlover 3 года назад

      That's a lot less than a 5x crop, because the lens is focusing on a screen that the phone then takes a picture of, not going directly into the sensor.

    Huh... so, why not just 3D print an adapter that doesn't have any optics? You'll get massive crop, but the character of the lens will be mostly intact.
    I think I might give that a shot, I have some free time and some filament in my printer.
    I remember you having a video on making adapters, I should look it up. If you can help, that'd be great! I'm using a Redmi Note 7 phone and MFT lenses.

Since I got myself a Nokia Lumia 1020 and Microsoft Lumia 950, the Sony camera and everything else kept collecting dust until I sold all of them. Now, my whole photography and videography work is now being done on my phone.
