Those early Multec 2 injectors had a terminal pin fretting issue. GM issued a TSB on it. The pins are so thin that they fret and develop an oxide layer, causing a misfire. You can sometimes unplug them and plug them back in and they'll work again for a while. GM's fix was to use dielectric compound on the pins to reduce fretting. They eventually moved away from those fragile pins and went to a USCAR-style (EV6) connector which i believe eliminated the issue once and for all.
Ivan, I work for a GM dealer in the parts department. I did not get a close enough of view of the injector; however, the spark plug is def counterfeit. The way to tell on those is that if you look closely at the grounding electrode, near where it centers over the central electrode, there should be a small “ raised dot” on the OEM. The counterfeits do not have this. That’s why you had to bend the grounding electrode to an unusual shape or position. Now, that’s not say that some of the counterfeiters don’t catch on and start trying to put that raises dot on their creations. GM is taking steps to try to help this situation by adding a holograph on all parts containers and they recently changed their core color of the blue on all their containers. It hard staying ahead of the counterfeiters. The best thing to do is always buy from a dealership or a reputable parts distributor.
And btw, there have been times when the grounding electrode actually breaks and/melts off and ends up in the cylinder. Bad bad situation when that happens. It’s best to replace those as soon as possible or better yet never use them. If the price is to good to be true… there’s a reason. ORM is more expensive but you’re better off. Another thing to mention is that typically somewhere in your community either at the dealership or a reputable seller has rebates going on where you get a few bucks off the cost of each plug. GM is REALLY good about paying out those rebates.

This is the gamble you take when you try to save a buck or two and settle on getting bargain basement aftermarket parts. Sure, sometimes you get lucky and the parts work well enough. But all too often, we all see cases like this. Where a kit of coils or injectors or whatever else it might be, turns out to be defective or broken, right out of the package. Or fail a short time later. But anyway. Nice work on the diagnostic Ivan. Your process of elimination was spot on.
Those sparkplugs may be counterfeit, or old. The older plugs in the 4.3L and 5.7L engines had the smaller lettering on them plus were gapped a .060 for the HEI distributors. When they switched to coil per plug, the gap was dropped to .040.
Nice and Quick Logical Diag! The Spark plug installer needs to be fired up... With the low mileage one would think the plug is original. Someone probably on the trail swapping the plug but not able to test injectors. Ivan as usual you just work through the issues to get to the fix.
I've been down that road before. Try to save a buck, and it ends up costing more in the end when you're chasing your tail trying to find out if the cheap parts are bad or something else is wrong. It pays to you top quality parts or oem parts.
The reason the touch screen was having issues is because of the water droplets on the screen; It's most likely a "capacitive touch screen", which are more sensitive to the slightest touch; whereas a resistive touch screen you typically have to push down a little harder and works better with a stylus/ pen, etc. So depending on what type of screen it is, you're either not pushing hard enough (resistive screen) or the droplets are making it think it's being touched in several places at once (if it's a capacitive screen). Just have a towel near by to wipe the screen and even wipe the droplets off of your gloves-- would probably clean up the issue with the random response.

Sometimes it is necessary to replace all of the injectors, for GM this is usually due to known failure modes of the injector design (could be heat + age related or a design defect). So, you may be faced with replacing all of the injectors when the first one fails because others will follow. However, properly replacing all of the injectors is not trivial or cheap. You first need to get a set of OEM injectors, test for proper coil resistance with the new set, then send the injectors out to be flowed and if necessary also cleaned. You can sometimes buy a remanufactured set that has been clean and flow tested, which is usually the most cost effective. This all takes time, but is needed to ensure that the fuel closed loop algorithm has accurate fuel flow control.
Take the injector out, using a hand syringe full of methylated spirits, pulse the injector with 12V from a pair of wires connected to a battery (no sparks) at the same time plunging the syringe in. This will force out any carbon clogging the nozzle! Its worked for me many times,
I used to do that years ago . I found a $35 fuel injector kit has a box plug to injectors and a 2 plastic injector holders that have an end that fits on carb clearers or brake cleaner cans . It’s awesome
these spark plugs are for vortec 7.4 ( L29 Engine ) it has same OEM gap 0.06 inch ( 1.5 mm ) I think they are ok but used for different application mistakenly
Given the year and low mileage of this truck, it must have sat unused for a long period. I had 2004 GMC 2500 HD that sat garaged for 5 years. I sold it to a local independent who was a former head tech at a Chevy dealer. He said he had to replace the fuel pump and 2 injectors because they were gummed up from sitting idle for so long.
With it being a dump truck, the low mileage isn't surprising. My dad and grandpa had a home remodeling business, and bought a 1990 F450 Dump truck brand new, and it currently has less than 100k on it. Basically it would get driven to a job, sit for a week or so while it was being filled with debris, quick trip to the dump, then back to the garage until the next job. At most, it may make a few trips to the dump or the quarry for sand/gravel/dirt for each job, but would be used multiple times a year. Dad finally retired about two years ago, so it sits for longer periods of time now.

I have seen cases where the seal inside the spark plug goes bad and causes the insulator to move forth and back so I would just have installed a new plug just to make sure it wasn't the issue. Spark plugs are after all relatively cheap, but some car designs prevents you from changing them.
I was taught to and always do, check brand new spark plugs before I put them into an engine, sometimes they are within spec, mostly, at least one is out. This is with OEM parts from reputable mfrs. I have seen cases where the seal inside the spark plug goes bad and causes the insulator to move forth and back so I would just have installed a new plug just to make sure it wasn't the issue.
Spark plugs are after all relatively cheap, but some car designs prevents you from changing them.
Thanks Ivan!
I was taught to and always do, check brand new spark plugs before I put them into an engine, sometimes they are within spec, mostly, at least one is out. This is with OEM parts from reputable mfrs. I like to get new plugs gapped to as near identical as possible, it makes me smile how noticeable the difference is, like a little tune up.
well that was so 1900's now best to replace engine or vehicle dad loved doing tune ups but mpg suffered he liked an engine to perform not limp along
@@jhonditch4269 I agree.. spark plug gap a little off.... new engine required.
Hey Ivan now you getting somewhere with the spark plug out the Chevy sounds like a Ford kudos
The gap on the plugs I took out of my 60k mile 1996 F150 straight six were almost half an inch and it ran pretty darn well
I need help I have a 1999 Jeep grand Cherokee 4.7 I run it for 30 minutes then it shuts off and won’t start til it cool back down about 20 minute run it does it again has good cam and crank signal when this is happening but the 5 volt reference goes high too 7.5-8 bolts when it doesn’t wanna start on the 5volt reference what you guys think? I replaced pcm same problem? NEED HELP
Thank you for the great and very informative thorough videos. What model of Think Tool scanner do you use?
Where’s the Launch? Are preferring the Think Tool? Launch has a new update for topology I’m told.
Seen a lot of these 6.0 with weird misfires and a crankshaft relearn fixes it 90 percent of the time. I believe there is a tsb
Those are generally false misfires 👍
Today, I diagnosed and replaced an O2 sensor on a Kia. I followed Ivan's advice and used the OEM sensor. Problem solved.
Well unless you did it and didn't say anything. But if one plug is loose and wrong gap. What about the others? Of coarse you figured it out. Did the owner keep the old parts?
I have an 04 Colorado that I believe jumped a tooth of timing. I then believe I skipped multiple teeth trying to break the crank bolt loose. This said I want to figure out how to retime the 3.5l engine bf moving on, my plan is to buy new timing parts.
Gotta get OEM service info :)
You need to buy the factory service manual and read about the timing procedure, there’s many marks that will make it clear that the timing is wrong or right.
Don’t go cheap on the manual if you haven’t done it before
@@Walczyk I have the Haynes manual. My experience w timing is minimal but I have a formal background in aircraft mechanics and troubleshooting. I believe I spun the crank backwards skipping teeth and am not sure how I can find the correct time on compression stroke not knowing how many teeth was jumped.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I’m about an hr west of you thanks for the detailed troubleshooting videos I really enjoy the content!
What is it you use for your oscilloscope for testing can bus
"Runs like a Chevy" the understatement of the year. I hear that and i see $$$ signs in the future 😂
Great way of diagnosis..scan tool really helped alot 👍🏿 👏..cheers
Simple rule for me. If you want to run the risk of non-genuine parts. Which I'm not immune to when there is a huge difference in price and it's still a known good brand on an older vehicle.
Always keep the original part/s until you know 100% it's fixed. I would want all my OE injectors, plugs and coils back from whom ever swapped them out!
Can u check the resistance of the old plug - possibly fake - vs your new? Will that show if it is indeed a ‘fake’
Spark plugs don't have resistance, they have an air gap, I think you meant the injector!
@@tomctutor nope. Defo plug sorry. Measure one end to the other shows a resistance.
@@davyarthurs I'd have thought the resistance would have been ZERO! They make the plug leads themselves resistive to cut down on radio interference, but I can't agree with resistance in the plug itself though.
@@nevillegoddard4966 You are correct that manufacturers usually include some resistance in the secondary side of the ignition system in order to reduce radio interference. That being said, sometimes the resistance is in the spark plug wire and sometimes it is in the plug. If you search on RUclips for "Measuring spark plug resistance. Resistor plug VS non resistor" you will find some videos that tell you the story. Not sure which of the 2 methods (or both) is OEM on this truck.
Stabilant 22 a chemical which increases conductivity in connection s used in Avionics .
NAPA sells it .
This may be a good thing to have Ivan .
I have it!
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics awesome on pins connectors .
I fix mostly heavy equipment manlifts cranes and loose dirty connections plague such.
I was told Ferrari and Garmin Raytheon avionics approves of Stabilant 22 also.
Most people do not realize die electric Silicone grease reduces conduction but actually used to stop oxidation and water intrusion .
I like the counterfeit part smell test. If anyone asks you to install something and it smells like a harbor freight store just say no.
Chinese dogshit.
Check the gap. Everyone: break out our wire spark plug gap tool. Ivan: Breaks out the Mitutoyo digital caliper. :)
Why would spark plugs need replacement on such a low mileage engine? Shade tree mechanics keep you in business. It is amazing how many you tube videos show that many repairs are the result of earlier "repairs". I am not a mechanic by profession but I can replace and engine and you will not find loose and missing hardware when I am done.
Some folks are simply cheap minded regardless of the benefits and long term reliability a few dollars can be. That 2003 6.0 with those low miles deserves the best because it is one reliable design and has plenty of life left in it. Sadly, some owners will go with all of the cheap plans because they believe its an old "dump truck" and just doesn't qualify for decent maintenance and OEM parts. I found it a hard one to believe when the owner said he will do the spark plugs when Ivan already had one out and could have done them all for pocket change. Tight wad owner. BTW, Delphi parts are as good or better than any AC Delco or GM part. Delphi makes many GM parts for GM.
Yes is lose or broken spark plug
Nice job Ivan .
I prescribe an aggressive Techron treatment. Probably gummed up due to all the sitting.
Drain one quart of old oil, and add 1 quart of Rislone to the engine crankcase. Run 1000 miles and change oil. helps the rings, knocks back some sludge
Great job, Ivan! And I like that truck!
Do you know your website is down? Trying to reach you there for an appointment.
Just fixed it apologize for the inconvenience! 👍
I would guarantee that injector is counterfeit if genuine injectors are $200 thats $1600 for full oem set. Rough mechanical work loose sparkplug unsecured injector plugs he needs to sack whoever fired the previous parts canon.
Yeah I agree, & what about the missing & poorly fitted fuel injector retaining clips? What a heap of shit previous repair. Fire the last tech's ass! - Or his supervisor!
Привет, Иван!
Правильно ли я понял, что цена новой форсунки $200 ? Довольно дорого... Почему бы не попытаться промыть ?
Du-du-du-da. Du-du-du-da. Sounds funny but a valuable sound to help diagnose the problem. THANKS!!!
nothing is easy wen it comes to those trucks.
Time to get a bigger workshop as working in the rain ain't too nice....
How come every time I go to read the comments the very first one is a spoiler

Touchscreens... As soon as a drop of water gets on there they stop working until they are dried off.
Great observation..i agree. I thought ivan was gonna punch his scanner😮
@@pootthatbak2578 Yes, I've done that. It isn't very productive, though. ;P
I dunno, I think I'd still stick a set of real Delco plugs in.
I offered, customer declined LOL
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Just another cheapskate.
That firing order seemed odd. Chevy's usually are 18436572.
The LS engines have never been that lol... since 1997. That's old small and big block stuff.
That is the firing order for the older GM V8 engines. The newer LS based engines have a different firing order.
The guy had some problems and someone gave him the cheapest parts tune-up, even injectors which is a bit excessive at 50K miles.
There is a difference between a knockoff and a counterfeit, Amazon does not sell counterfeit products. The part you installed was not GM, so is that a knockoff?
What's the difference between counterfeit and knockoff?
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics A knockoff is a copy of a brand-name item with just a few minor changes to avoid patent infringement and a different name.
A counterfeit item is an exact copy even down to the name. Do you believe a Chinese company could put together all the resources to make a platinum spark plug and not get the font correct?
The plug was Cleary marked using ac Delco lettering and signature blue...that is an attempt to deceive so counterfeit... if it was branded ABGelco (or such) that would be a knockoff
Yes, Amazon suppliers will sell you fake parts. counterfeit or knockoff, same crap.
Calipers not micrometers 7:41
How many times I've heard" my mechanic got em at PICK YOU PART, he said they looked the same"
I see you are using the OSHA approved, leather-bound, step ladder. ;-)
Great
IT CAN'T BE TRUE Ivan, a man who routinely buys aftermarket Milwaukee batteries (SHAME, SHAME) actually sprung for a real deal Mitutoyo Digital Caliper. I was fully expecting Harbor Freight. I'm in a state of shock.
I got it as a company tool when I did an internship with Bristol Myers Squibb back in 2007 haha
That Mitutoyo isn't even that expensive. Less than 10$ a year if he owned it for said 16 years :D
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I knew there had to be a catch. No way Ivan was paying $120 for a Mitutoyo caliper.
How do you not have more subscribers?
That's a "digital caliper", not a micrometer. Micrometers will look more like a C-clamp shape with a little mechanical knob on one side and they read much more precisely. I've watched hundreds of hours of milling and lathe work over the years, so I'm basically a youtube expert at this point. :)
Yup...vernier caliper
Digital " vernier" caliper.
Or they're sometimes called - "Vernier Calipers"; VERY NEAR calipers!
If one spark plug was loose and had an excessive gap others could too
I'm sure. Owner was going to replace them all :)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Yes and likely install them just like before, incorrectly.

It was actually missing the exhaust 😂

Parts cannon is a Junk Problem w/ today's parts. OEM or junk yard much better choices.
Yeah, if you parts cannon a vehicle with junk parts you are just asking for trouble.
And worst of all people tend to throw away all the OE stuff, so you have to re buy everything to get a reliable car.

$200 USD for 1 OEM fuel injectors, you're kidding !
I paid $200 AUD including postage for a brand new aftermarket set of fuel injectors for my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine in my Holden Commodore & that was freight from the U.S. to Australia.
The OEM Bosch injectors got clogged with fine dust particles & they need a thorough clean but the generic brand of fuel injectors have lasted for about 140,000 kilometres (11 years) so far,the car starts much easier with the replacement injectors.
Honestly,.I don't know why a 40,000 mile (60,000 kilometre) Chevy truck needs new fuel injectors for,my Commodore has done over 390,000 kilometres now & the engine is original apart from the hydraulic lifters & gaskets !
