As someone who views Mumford and Sons and the National as two of my all time favorite music groups... I love both versions. I think Mumford and Sons bring some of the passion and desperation to entertain while the National brings the beautiful orchestration and the melancholy in Beringer's voice. So yeah. Love them both.
Wow. Thank you so much for posting this. :D I'm dead even with both versions. Marcus' passion and the true entertaining at the 'desperate to entertain' portion was brilliant, and the empty, flat vocals so brilliant from Matt Berninger for the National is moving. I simply love both versions, and I thank Mumford and Sons for introducing me to the fourth consecutive National song that I'm addicted hopelessly.
It's totally pointless to compare them... both are great in their own way of makin their fantastic music! I enjoy every day listening em both... so stop trying to argue about who's better or whatever... just enjoy listening! Take it or leave it, i dont understand! pace
It's a very different version form the original by the National but I like it, too. M&S give their own special touch to the songs they cover.I love them!! Great, thanks for the upload!!
I love the cover and the original.. can't pick which one i prefer because they are both great in different ways. Well done Mumford & Sons again on another great cover! :)
not hating or arguing with you, but what makes The National so great is that deep sorrow feeling voice of Matt Beringer. Which is why his music, his songs are so great.
How have I never seen this before? Oh, because everything MTV is blocked in Australia. >__> My two favourite bands smooshed into one song. It's perfect.
HOLY COW!!! This is so much better than The National's version. I feel like there are too many instruments going on in the original... the backup vocals in this version are soooo much better, subtle. The ending has so much passion and the rhythm blows away The National. Such an awesome tempo, Marcus is gifted
not sure about anyone else but I actually kinda like the quicker tempo. one of the better covers of any song I've heard in awhile too. love the national's version too of course.
love both bands, they both bring something different to the song but each version is equally as good as each other. But i must say probably just because i'm British i can understand Marcus Mumford's pronouciation of the words more easily, but thats probably because i'm just used to hearing that accent more than an american one.
@JirachiJenny I agree. I'm always keen to hear other band's takes on songs that aren't theirs, but for me the vocals on this one really don't work/fit. Definitely good to have the chance to hear it like this though, as it makes it easier to appreciate the original version more off the back of it.
Oh wow! I haven't checked this since I uploaded it. Wow! 500+ views, and 20 likes. Thanks guys! If there's anyone that wants a link to download it, let me know!
@checkcheckluke I realise that. Finding this song led me to the national and other songs they've performed. I'm not saying they're anything alike -___-
Pretty good. Fixing that stutter would be pretty easy with pretty much any wavetable program. Audacity is my personal recommendation. Thanks for this anyway though.
i was at a national show tonight, and when they played this they gave a nod to this cover. careful to point out that this band is indeed made up of talented musicians.
You can tell it's been awhile since you've seen a video when you say "Wow, that guy with the top comment is saying exactly what I was thinking! I wonder wh- wait half a darn minute..."
This cover makes me feel as good as I ever have.... They actually gave this song some emotion unlike the monotone version the National did ..... That said I love both renditions & Marcus is the key to why their's is better ;)
Caio, you're comment makes no since Mumford & Sons is the most unique band that's come about for twenty years. They're nothing like anything else in "popular" music. In fact, the only reason they are considered in "pop" in America is because they are just that good. They are extremely difficult to dislike.
This indeed does not work for his voice as well as with the vocalist from The National, but it's still a good cover. I love both Mumford and The National.
I actually don't like the added emotion. I always felt like this song was suppose to be empty - empty promises and empty happiness. That's why the original dry baritone was so perfect for the lyrics. Either way, it's still a very nice cover. Always glad to see bands giving tribute to the National.
no mumford and sons dont cut with this version of "england" sound like hes on 78 speed for anyone who can remember!! leave it to the national, talk about murdering a tune,
No Marrius I really don't. I rarely start listening to anything new. But, when I do listen to radio, I don't hear anyone, that's popular, that remotely sounds like M&S. It's all techno, hip hop, r&b, or country. If there are other bands out there that are comparable then they're probably not that good. Since they haven't broke out the way M&S has. I just thought the comment about M&S being everything wrong with music today, was a pretty asinine comment, when they are nothing like what's popular
i think this band is amazing but they played it too fast and the emotion doesnt suit the lyrics. i did like the way they played "afraid of the house they stay the night with the sinners" but overall, the original version is, without doubt, better.
"beautiful melodic piece of art" - it's a bit douchey to say. music is art, but there's just something about that description that has an element of douche to it. why not just say "song" instead of "work of art"? and "so sue me" - comes off as juvenile and standoffish. has kind of a "so what of it?" vibe to it. but i dunno, maybe i'm just a pissy wanker.

I have listened to the National's England 1000+ times but I never knew the lyrics until now. Love both Marcus and Matt.
It's totally pointless to compare them... both are great in their own way of makin their fantastic music! I enjoy every day listening em both... so stop trying to argue about who's better or whatever... just enjoy listening! Take it or leave it, i dont understand! pace
You don't know how much i love you mumford, but this song.... Seriously it's none of your business :( Soul of this epic piece of art is Matt Berninger
I think the song is just so good that it doesn't matter who plays it, it will always be beautiful!
even though this is a cover, its one of my favorite Mumford and Sons songs
I love how their covers show their varied music taste. And i love how they have the exact same music taste as me...
thank you for posting this, i have been looking for this song since i heard it on VH1 Unplugged!! Awesome song, thank you so much for sharing this!!!
one of their best covers from m&s i have heard. truly way better than the original
I have never been so excited for a cover ever.
thank you this song was stuck in my head since i saw it on vh1 unplugged
not hating or arguing with you, but what makes The National so great is that deep sorrow feeling voice of Matt Beringer. Which is why his music, his songs are so great.
Marcus makes this song soulfully magnificent & I love both versions but damn he is effin incredible :)
i have both of their albums and a shirt that my bro got me and this song is awesome they make such graceful yet strog music
Awesome. Thanks. Saw the unplugged performance too and just had to find this on here.
How have I never seen this before? Oh, because everything MTV is blocked in Australia. >__>
My two favourite bands smooshed into one song. It's perfect.
Oh my goodness, this song is brilliance. Thank you.
HOLY COW!!! This is so much better than The National's version. I feel like there are too many instruments going on in the original... the backup vocals in this version are soooo much better, subtle. Wrong.... they gave it soul & passion... 65 years old & seen everybody from the 60's to now but these guys crush them all !!!!
I was looking for this for like 3 months!! :O :O awesome!! thanks!
yes, yes he does have has the perfect voice
not sure about anyone else but I actually kinda like the quicker tempo. one of the better covers of any song I've heard in awhile too. love the national's version too of course.
Beautiful

Wish this genre of music would over throw the crap that's on the radio.
@ghostie7790 an American band called The National
Oh wow! I haven't checked this since I uploaded it. Wow! 500+ views, and 20 likes. Thanks guys! If there's anyone that wants a link to download it, let me know!
great song!
@crazyfeh12 This is some of their best work!! Can you post that download link??
I just noticed.. near 2 :25, The backup singer ( Winston or Ben) messes up the lyrics!
I have a question for Marcus... HOWWWWWWWWW??????? How can you do it? I guess they have to be from outer space or something so as to be so perfect...
@checkcheckluke I realise that. Finding this song led me to the national and other songs they've performed. I'm not saying they're anything alike -___-

Amazing guys
This song really made me a fan of the national and just cemented my INHERENT OBSESSION m&s
i was at a national show tonight, and when they played this they gave a nod to this cover. careful to point out that this band is indeed made up of talented musicians.
his voice is just a great baritone and Mumford is a sweet british raspy tenor
Both the cover and the original are amazing. The original just has a different feel than that of Mumford & Sons
You can tell it's been awhile since you've seen a video when you say "Wow, that guy with the top comment is saying exactly what I was thinking! I wonder wh- wait half a darn minute..."
thank you, thank you!!!
@crazyfeh12 Yea... I think I like the original better too, but both versions are pretty awesome.
This cover makes me feel as good as I ever have.... They actually gave this song some emotion unlike the monotone version the National did ..... That said I love both renditions & Marcus is the key to why their's is better ;)
This has got to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. You're bad at music.
Shawn Newman Sorry Shawn if I offended you..... I am an old rocker from the 60's & Mumford gave music a huge lift :) God Bless !!!!!
The national does have emotion , the singers voice is just super deep.
How have I never heard this when The national and Mumfords and Sons are two of my favourite bands?! This is amazing, but nothing on the original.
This cover feels so bright.. I like the mellow original.
I am not saying this isnt good. Infact its great.. But i just relate to original
@crazyfeh12 yeah its a tie i gotta say i love mumford but the orignal is pretty good cheers :D
@16alimarie I posted the download link. :)
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOOOU!!!
@AaahItsHannah It was. I kept waiting for the lyrics to come in. It was funny.
Caio, you're comment makes no since Mumford & Sons is the most unique band that's come about for twenty years. They're nothing like anything else in "popular" music. In fact, the only reason they are considered in "pop" in America is because they are just that good. They are extremely difficult to dislike.
This should be our national anthem.
It's awesome, just like the rest of Mumford's songs
who sings the original?
yaay i love my england even if it is a bit crummy:)
This indeed does not work for his voice as well as with the vocalist from The National, but it's still a good cover. I love both Mumford and The National.
It's okay, champ, we're all entitled to our own 'opinion'.
...in music today
I actually don't like the added emotion. I always felt like this song was suppose to be empty - empty promises and empty happiness. That's why the original dry baritone was so perfect for the lyrics.
Either way, it's still a very nice cover. Always glad to see bands giving tribute to the National.
I think that original version is cooler, by 2 things: The grave voice of the leader, and the slow tempo.
I love this band too much so i wont ever be able to say he nationals are better
@crazyfeh12 idk they're both pretty good, Mumford is the best band in the World!
@crazyfeh12 actually its got alot on it ...sorry dude
@crazyfeh12 what
no mumford and sons dont cut with this version of "england" sound like hes on 78 speed for anyone who can remember!! leave it to the national, talk about murdering a tune,

@crazyfeh12 i personally think its better than the original
For me, I mean.
*sense, since
Ditto....
meh the National never achieved this standard.
@crazyfeh12 i did brah
it is too fast
why are you here?
I love Mumford & Sons, but this was played too fast.
argue?... lol alright, but no you're wrong this is better :) hahaaah.
@utmatt1023 No.
Too fast, I think. Would have been absolutely wonderful if it was just a touch slower. Still lovely.
@greglayhe if Mumford & Sons are so shit why watch a video entitled England (cover) - Mumford & Sons ?????
i think this band is amazing but they played it too fast and the emotion doesnt suit the lyrics. i did like the way they played "afraid of the house they stay the night with the sinners" but overall, the original version is, without doubt, better.
hey i like your comment
Mumford are great, but they destroyed the soul of this song.
Meh.. it’s decent. I’m going to go listen to the original before this cover ends
well, I get the first dislike. MARCUS MUMFORD IS RUINING MY LIFE.
@daniel11357 you're wasting precious comment space. Go away.
Feels rushed.
This has absolutely nothing on the original just doesn't work with his voice.
at least spell it right buddy
This is even worse than 311's cover of Lovesong!
"beautiful melodic piece of art" - it's a bit douchey to say. music is art, but there's just something about that description that has an element of douche to it. why not just say "song" instead of "work of art"?

Horrible.
