I PROMISE I DIDN'T JUST DISAPPEAR. I've been working on this video since like the 30th of April to not have any copyright claims on it and atlast... i think its time to just take the L on this video. who wants to take bets on how long it takes till they get my ass
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that The Hunger Games kickstarted an entire era of dystopian movies and series obviously inspired by it. What's amazing is that, in my opinion, not only is this still the best of all of the dystopian series that came out around that time, it also aged incredibly well and the social commentary is extremely well done and still relevant.
@@packedentertainment2866 yeah but after this movie, dystopia was the IT theme for every major blockbuster afterward. It wasn’t THE most popular theme until this book.
i really appreciated that katniss wasn’t the chosen one or it was “fate” that she became the mockingjay. the mockingjay could’ve been anyone and that’s what made the hunger games so powerful and unique.
@@avatrice3077 he said it needed to be her because of her actions though. The way she volunteered for her sister and looked after rue pulled on people's heartstrings.
This is one of those extremely rare franchises where the sequel is actually better than the first. I cannot wait for you to watch Catching Fire, it's sooooo good!
Our collective boo @Chuuzus !!!! Waiting for your final Hunger Games video, but god DAMN do I fuck with this series, and FUCK GALE! CAN I GET A THEY/THEM!
@@lynxb7396 I still say "that is mahogany" randomly around 10x a day...like I could just be sitting at the toilet trying to deuce and I just go "Manners!"
Both of them being allowed to win in the end is SUCH a powerful moment to me. It was the first crack. The first true and successful rebellion against the system that chains them all.
imo the first crack was how katniss treated rue while she was dying, it showed how horrific the games really are, it even kickstarted the rebellion in district 11
@@DannyViTaylorI agree that the first crack was Rue and it was an avalanche after the berries. Katniss’ flower bed for her, the district 12 salute, district 11 sending her a bread, Katniss thanking district 11 out loud for the cameras, the games changing the rules mid-game (seemingly for her love-story) and Tresh sparing her life for Rue. Then the berries happened and showed just how the capitol can be her btch, a tribute from the poorest district did all that and the capitol just bowed in defeat.
I think in the books Peeta was making it very clear to the audience that he only followed the careers to keep Katniss safe. It's why the Capitol even bothered with the rule that 2 tributes could win. Peeta was playing that boy desperately in love so well. Katniss just couldn't tell and I guess in the movies they still tried to keep it mostly from Katniss' POV.
The funny thing is that he didn’t even play the "Boy desperately in love" role lol. Everything he did while being in the game was to protect Katniss, that was his main goal. Even if it meant dying.
@@zanlani well, he knew that with her, district 12 could have a real winner for once and that she has people waiting for her. in my opinion, at that point in time, it isn't love but a crush. he's willing to die for her because he knows he's going to die either way so if he's going to die, he wants to be able to "still be me" and do something good for the girl he has a crush on. I think Catching Fire is when those feelings because something actually real because they finally get the chance to get to know each other.
Yes, I'm always here for the Gale slander. Apparently, he was supposed to be Katniss' cousin, but Suzanne Collins' publishers insisted that she include a love triangle.
it would be so hilarious if that was the reason she had the "cousin" storyline with gale in catching fire (also let's not fool ourselves here, katniss was always gonna chose peeta and suzanne collins HEAVILY implied that hahahhaha
By the end of the book I just wanted Katniss to chose herself tbh and find healing without a man XD. But then I couldn't really stand either Gale or Peeta after awhile since I always found that the writing was at it's best when it didn't try to focus on the romantic aspect. (Then in the movies they dialed it up >.>)
@@neptunie5171 I agree that Katniss got so depressed in mockingjay that she could only be fixed by herself but the difference between Gayle and peeta is that peeta never pressured her and totally gave her time to heal and self love after the war
That actually makes so much sense cause in her previous writing I never got the sense that she was a love triangle type of writer. She loves a good non-toxic people who don’t get along well but are forced to depend on each other other to stay alive to friends/lovers storylines from my experience.
Ngl I wish that they would have kept in the Clove and Cato “relationship” because in the books he did try to save her from Tresh he was just too late. I think it would have made them look like kids too and make us really realize the whole point.
When reading the books i almost felt like Cato and Clove were the real star-crossed lovers and they resent the whole act between Katniss and Peeta. Then they replaced it with glimmer with no substance to the story whatsoever.
Peeta can not be compared to Gale. Peeta thought Katniss was in love with him, and when he found out Katniss didn't like him back, he respected her decision, and even offered friendship instead. And then they're is Gale. Gale had no romantic past with Katniss, and only wanted to be with her when he found out Peeta liked her. He pressured her throughout the entire series, and made Katniss feel like she owed him because they were friends. Gale pulled a Jacob from twilight, where he made Katniss feel as if she had to choose between the two of them, like if she picks one she'll lose the other (well I mean if Katniss chooses Peeta, Gale would make her feel guilty, and never shut up about, and distance himself. However is Katniss choose Gale, PEETA WOULD HAVE RESPECTED IT. AND HE DID!)
It's far fetched to claim that Katniss and Gale were just friends thou. From their interactions it is pretty clear that they did habe romantic feelings for each other all along while she barely knew Peeta.
@@JustLIkerapunzel Nah, I just finished reading the books. You're right that it's implied Gale had feelings for Katniss before the Games, but Katniss was super confused by this.
@@JustLIkerapunzel in the books gale doesnt tell her he has these feelings for her until after he sees her with peeta in the first games. he says that he started feeling that way like 6 months before the reaping but katniss is very confused by this because her feelings for gale were very platonic at this point. she also does know peeta in the books because they grew up in the same class together. other than the fact that he was the catalyst for hope when she was starving and dying after her dad died, she also mentions how she’s noticed him in school and wrestling and a bunch of stuff. also in the books she is just so confused by her feelings and really doesn’t have time for either of them because there’s more important things going on.
I am always so happy when someone catches the fact that the reason she missed the first shot was the fact that this is not her bow. Everyone jumps to the conclusion that it's her nerves and I guess that's because not a lot of people are into archery. But yeah it's so refreshing to see people understand that every bow is different depending on poundage and the materials it is made of and that it takes time getting used to shooting with different bows.
Genuinely laughed at "Is Bowser in this arena?!" and "Sure! Would you like oak or cedar?" Also the Gale hate is 100% valid and justified and I'm here for it
You're right about the books being a trip, I remember the dogs actually being mutations of each of the dead tributes with their faces or something, specifically remember the Thresh mutation being said to be really huge like him, and that Cato actually survives the fall and mauling and screams in agony for a whole day before Katniss finally puts him out of his misery, yikes
Am I the only one who was so surprised the Peeta vs gale discussion was even a thing?? Like the whole book was about “look at the capitol making this about the love story” and then the pop culture reaction was all about the love triangle lmao Also like it was always gonna be peeta? Like always it was so crystal clear how well their personalities complimented each other everyone that preferred gale really just found him more attractive personally and didn’t think about the fact that, you know, it’s who ends up with katniss and not >reader< lol
I like gale more and not just because of his looks 😂 I just really like his character, and her and peeta’s relationship is very forced for their survival and to please the capital, like snow fr says that if she doesn’t make their relationship believable that he’s going to kill gale and her family. After having to fake something for that long in order to SURVIVE, there’s no possible way to know if you’re starting to catch real feelings for them, or if it’s your mind telling you that you like them in order to keep you alive and safe. It’s just not a healthy relationship in my opinion
@@tannerv259 Hmm, I do think there is a healthy dose of trauma bonding in their relationship (pun intended). Then again, same can be said for Gale and Katniss. Also I never meant attractive in terms of looks, I meant personality! I don't know if you've read the books, but especially in there it's obvious it was always Peeta. He had a massive crush on her for literal years before they went to the games together, and when he got picked she thought "not him," remembering the bread kindness thing, so it's alluded to she's not neutral to begin with, either. She pushed down her feelings for a long time because she thought he was pretending and bc it was about the survival of her family in the first book. She def had caught feelings by the end of it and felt it was mighty inconvenient. She made the conscious choice to steer clear of him after they won to avoid getting even more attached. From the jump she liked his kindness/selflessness, his bravery and his honesty. He liked her strength, her authenticity and bluntness. Like, their story was so developed, so much more than her and Gale's. Her and Gale were very similar, and from a writing point of view, the whole opposites attract angle with her and Peeta was very obvious :D I'm not saying it's wrong to prefer Gale, I'm just saying that's never how the story was gonna go / how it was set up, and since there was not a lot of canonical chemistry my hypothesis is it's either a personal bias or bc one simply doesn't like Peeta and Katniss together, which is also everyone's prerogative.
@@Maja942 I respect your opinion!! However I just finished reading the 2nd book and I’ve been taking screenshots of times when she’s said she’s never liked peeta like that and only sees him as a friend, and of times when she’s ready to be w gale and the words she uses to describe him. Me personally I really liked Gale’s character in the first two movies and I felt like the author kinda ruined him in mockingjay on purpose to make the reader choose peeta by the end, but I understand why people wouldn’t like him because of what he did to prim in the ending. I like him and peeta, I just wish there wasn’t SO much hate about gale, it happens all the time in love triangle books/movies where it becomes like a trend to favor one of them and hate on everybody who likes the other, even though they’re both lowkey toxic and have their own issues 😂💀 there’s this new popular book called fourth wing and I feel the same way about the love triangle in that book….. but thank you for being respectful and just sharing your opinion instead of fighting me for liking gale 😂
@@tannerv259 Oh that's interesting! It's been so long since I've read the books, so maybe my own bias also played into it :D I don't remember it like that at all. I read it as her denying her feelings cause shes scared, indoctrinating herself to not like him, and trying to make a conscious effort to choose Gale because he's safe and familiar. For me, I read the love triangle more as a metaphor: Choosing Gale was choosing herself and following her instincts, aka protecting herself and her family first. Choosing Peeta was choosing the war and "doing the right thing". I don't hate Gale for what happened in the Mockingjay, I think him becoming corrupt by the end was a cautionary tale. Like, that's how Katniss could have ended up. Gale was all alone, he was desperate and willing to use whatever means necessary, because his oppressors were and it's the only way to win. Katniss and Peeta had each other and he inspired her to think outside her own world view by the end, she was always a rebel but only her sister dying made her have true political drive, which is why she killed Coin. I believe from a writing perspective, it was less a love story and more a character study... like Peeta was much "richer" than both Gale and Katniss, he was one of the more privileged in the District. Historically, privilege means the luxury of being a political trailblazer, if you're worried about where your next meal is coming from you don't have the means to care about the greater good. So through Peeta, Katniss adapted that drive little by little, in addition to gaining actual means bc she won the games, whereas Gale didn't, he was still the "old Katniss". And her denying her feelings for Peeta was a metaphor for her being afraid to change and choose the greater good over herself (raw survival)
@@Maja942actually I agree with your take. It was never going to be Gale. All you have to watch is katniss's actions when it came to Peeta. *Actions* where how she communicated when she felt something deeply because she was literally terrified to express anything that might be considered weakness. Her relationship with Peeta is so much more developed in the first book than it is in the first movie - she wanted to protect him because he was kind. She always saw him as a better person than her because she willed herself to close off her feelings and he didn't. The love scene in the 2nd book towards the end should have told everyone reading it was always Peeta. She explains she never felt that spreading warmth in her heart or her body for anyone else.
Little thing about the ship name, the fans have officially dubbed Everlark (Everdeen + Mellark) as the official ship name to make up for the incredibly unfortunate portmanteau that is Katniss and Peeta's first names.
Well they are black, it’s pretty on note. After all a white woman writing a YA novel so there’s no doubt she’d unintentionally write in a racist stereotype, I mean look at Twilight and the one of two black characters being so bad at driving he nearly murders the main character.
Katniss: I’ve just won the Hunger Games, struggling with major PTSD and the President and the capitol elites want me dead… Gale: Yeh but…what about us?
Ugh yes! I think a lot of movie goers didn’t really understand that Gale was the reason for everything at the very end. I do wish he had Finnicks fate, Finnick deserved life. But I guess that’s the point. What’s the quote? Many who live deserve death and many dead deserve to live
Gale in the movies was just so annoying to me because he never told Katniss that he liked her before the games and they weren't a couple before she went off to the games either. Yet, he consistently throughout the series ignores all the trauma and mental anguish Katniss is going through just to talk about her and Peeta and who Katniss likes more. He kept pressuring her rather than just respecting her boundaries. Then when she concedes and gives him what he wants with kisses, he tries to make her the villain and feel guilty about kissing him in the first place. Like, they were fighting a war and somehow Gale always found a way to bring up their non existent relationship.
Exactly. Gale was the worst. My favorite example is right at the beginning of Catching Fire (done better in the book, but books are better for that really intricate stuff) when Gale kissed Katniss and she had a big moment of "he just destroyed any hope I had of feeling whole after the games, ever again" and yet he was mad that she didn't really reciprocate. Meanwhile, Peeta found out/realized that Katniss was pretending to love him for the games and got pissy, but he took time away from her to process his feelings, then reached out and asked to be friends, and to get to know her so they could reforge any kind of real relationship (friend or gf). Gale never actually cared about Katniss' feelings, and I hate him so much
I can't tell you how many times my sister and I rolled our eyes and said "Shut up, Gale" whenever we decided to rewatch the series together because he was really only thinking about himself when it came to Katniss. Props to saving people and keeping families alive and all but I would hate to know him on a personal level like she did.
District 1 & 2 always get a bad rep because they have the career schools, but I think people overlook the fact those districts aren’t spared from the games, they have to send their children in too. The Career school is how they protect the younger children and give the older ones a fighting chance of returning home. Kids enter the school when they are 12 and leave when they are 18. District 1 & 2 always have 18 year old tributes because they have the top graduates at the school volunteer for whoever is reaped. This means the younger kids won’t be sent into the games, and the volunteers are the strongest contenders giving them a better chance of returning home. It is unfair to the other districts who don’t have the money or the infrastructure to replicate the career schools. But the other districts are not 1 & 2’s priority, their children are.
The cut when Katniss says "I volunteer as tribute" is a cut that directors uses to create an uncomfortable sensation, the intention is to make u feel weird about that scene- the same way that Katniss was feeling, like chaos and stress going fast
I feel like the trailer for the movie had a better cut / version of that moment and the movie version always takes me out. I don’t like shaky cam type editing very much at all (although it does make sense in the chaos of the arena) but that one scene at the reaping really bothered me. Especially since I had watched the trailer so many times over and over again before the movie came out. Just me though
That cut was fucking dreadful 😂 I think Gary Ross did a lot of things right in this movie, and laid the foundations for the rest of the series, but some of his directorial decisions in terms of the cinematography are questionable. The overuse of the shaky cam being the biggest one. I know what his justification for it is but he used it way too much.
I get what they were trying to do but it is so awkward how they did it. There were probably better ways to convey her distress than one bad cut in editing. Maybe playing with ambient sound after she hears Prim’s name, or having a closer angle of her face as she tried to fight through the guards. The way they cut just looked rough, like a mistake.
@@urinternetmomash the bad stuff only happens to Prim after she gives the pin the back to Katniss who lived through 2 Hunger Games with it on 3 if you count the war. Katniss said this is a MockingJay pin and as long as you have it nothing bad will happen to you when she got picked Katniss volunteered for her and thats the only time she had the pin so Katniss is right
18:58 I heard that when Clove dies and screams for Cato in the book, Cato heard her and tried to get to her as he believed they would be the ones to survive. In the book they were also closer in age and Cato was starting to like her romantically. He stayed by her side and cried as she passed away in his arms. But the whole “smelling like roses” is actually a theory that Snow “marked”peeta since day one.
Yeh Cato made no attempt to protect Clove in the book. He was on the outskirts and he was meant to be on guard for Thresh but obviously didn’t see him coming, and when Thresh came, Cato didn’t wanna take his chances, he simply called out to Clove but it’s never said he came running, he was clearly watching it happen. He only went after Thresh after because Thresh took his backpack. Most of the careers were kinda terrified of Thresh. Rue or Peeta said they knew where his base was but nobody wanted to risk attacking him. Also in the book there isn’t any romantic hints between the two. It’s likely Clove and Cato grew up together and trained together for the games, and Clove dying was Cato’s wake up call to the fact he was now on his own. He was very cocky and arrogant with a group around him, but now Clove was dying, he knew he was on his own. It’s not impossible that they had feelings for each other but I’d say they were just friends.
The movie villainized Cato, whilst in the books made him, actually all the contestents, more human. They were kids after all and the true villain through it all was the capitol.
@@zanlani I’m gonna disagree with this. In the book, other than him crying with Clove, Cato was written way more unhinged. Katniss even thinks he’s deranged because of the way he reacted to everything. Katniss in the book describes him as “monstrous”. In the arena she aims all her hatred of the Career districts towards Cato. He’s the only one in the arena she was actually looking forward to him coming at her because she wanted to take him out. She notes that when she blows up the supplies he flips the F out, like not just in the movie where he looks angry and obviously snaps the kids neck but like full blown losing his shit where the other careers have to calm him down. The movie gives Cato his scene at the end where he has his self realisation that he’s merely a pawn, and clearly the capitol were rooting for Peeta and Katniss and not him, so he’d wasted his childhood. In the book Cato still thinks he can win. He’s smiling at Katniss and is banking on her taking too long to decide whether to shoot or not and was going to use Peetas body as a shield to push her off by snapping Peetas neck or choking him to death. Side note, Katniss didn’t even know Marvels name in the book until Catching fire, she didn’t know Cloves name until Peeta tells her, and she only remembers Glimmers name because of how ridiculous she thinks it is lol.
@@davidfairweather3301 You know better tbh bc I haven't read the books in a long while so I've forgotten alot. I remember how horrifying Cato's death was and some tiny things about the careers. One part I remember is when Cato finds Clove dead, his defeat and sadness when he saw her and realized that she was gone and then Katniss explaining how truly corrupt the games are. And I know how ruthless the careers were but they were, in the end, still just pawns in a terrifying game. But yeah, you are probably right :)
@@zanlani the scene with Clove was really sad, I remember when I first read it. It really does hit home that they are all innocent children. It made me think about Cato probably realised in that moment he was now truly alone. It was easy for them all to be confident and arrogant in a big group, but as soon as he loses Clove that’s the first time he’s been alone since he entered the capitol. (Was nice to hear your thoughts too) :)
I recently read the ballad of song birds and snakes and let me tell you it puts so many things into perspective I just love these books and movies so much like the social commentary is so good Also Snow’s reasoning for his actions in the ballad of songbirds and snakes reminded me of Gale during mockingjay like their way of thinking so too similar even though they’re on the opposing sides of the war
@@lnterval honestly, superiority. He believed that people in the capital were better than the districts and everything he did was to increase his social standing in the capital
I know a lot of people hated the shaky camera and directing of the first film, but I sort of wish they had kept the same director for the whole series. It felt more real. It felt like if some corporation was running some extremely cruel and violent version of Survivor in the future. Also the book made it seem like there were cameras everywhere, so the direction also made it look more like a "found footage" film in a way too.
I love that you kept in and acknowledged "That is mahogany!" 😂 So many reactions cut it out or ignore it and idk why but it's such a hilarious and iconic line for me 🤣
It’s not really funny at all given the extremely dark context it provides. Effie is so Capitol she cares about some wood being damaged instead of The Mentor she is in charge of, y’know Mentors? People from the Districts who survived the Hunger Games and now are forced to lead other district children to their deaths, resulting in crippling alcoholism? That’d be like saying “it’s so funny that the Capitol has a pink drink to make them barf so they can taste everything at their feasts while the district starve daily.” Kind of missing the point, big time.
The Hunger Games CHANGED my life literally. I took a Cinema bachelor's degree, I started drawing and speaking proper English bcs of Jennifer Lawrence and I was introduced into the ✨️ FANDOM WORLD ✨️ I can only watch this movie either alone or with a very CLOSE friend. But re watching with you and having the same vision was an amazing experience!! Love you Ash 🫶🏼💕
Caesar was a character I low key loved. He wasn't an evil character or a good character. He seemed to be one of the few Capitol residents that treated the Tributes in a way you should treat possibly scared children. Neither movie nor books say what his fate is after the Second Rebellion. But, Suzanne Collins was alleged to have said that he was spared from execution (no proof in that though). If he was, he probably would have been spared because of his honest efforts in regards to every tribute.
there was only one answer...team Prim, Katniss is constantly saying Prim is the only person she's certain she loves, I think the books were totally about her relationship with her sister where as the movies really played up a romantic theme, the similarities between the game makers and Hollywood agents/directors are pretty significant... its no surprise that the movies played up a relationship just like the games did to get viewers to more quickly emotionally invest in the story
@@tannerv259 Disagree with the last part. I preferred Gale because he was familiar. He was driven, firm and dependable for the entire series (his dependability began to dwindle in the last book). The biggest problem as stated by Katniss herself is that he was too much like herself. Selfish and angry. Peeta was the opposite. He was patient, levelheaded and nurturing. He didn't want revenge he wanted a future. Realisticly Peeta is a far better choice given the circumstances. He'll help Katniss heal, even though he needs to heal to. He'll make sure they both heal together. If all that war stuff didn't happen I can't say I can imagine Gale having much of a personality. He was simply very angry, from a young age being forced to provide for your entire family after your father is obliterated underground, I mean who can blame him. Him and Katniss are so alike in both personality and background that I can imagine they have a similar thought process. Major difference is that Gale wants revenge and Katniss doesn't. She never does. The characters are so real, I wouldn't call Gale a villain. If we're willing to sympathise with the careers of all people for being a product of their upbringing, why not Gale?
@@catscan5720 I could never see her and peeta working out because from the very beginning she never saw him as anything other than a friend, and even a friend was stretching it. He was just a man that showed her a little bit of kindness at a time when she really needed it, and then they both went to the games together. She made it VERY clear in the books as well as the movies that she did not want a relationship with him. Only AFTER the games, when she has to force this fake relationship with him for their survival, is when she admits that she “fell” for him. But I think in a situation like that where you’re forcing your brain and body to be madly in love with somebody to not only guarantee your safety but the safety of your family and friends, you can never truly know if you REALLY have feelings for this person or if it’s you subconsciously needing to survive and therefore tricking yourself and telling yourself that you love them. For this reason alone I think their entire relationship could never work and was solely based on trauma and the impact of their need for survival. Did peeta always like her? Yes. But did katniss EVER see a relationship with him, before or even after the first game? No, she didn’t, which is stated in the books
@@tannerv259 I see your point. Maybe the relationship will fail, maybe they live happily forever after. Maybe they mess up their kids. Idk. You have really good points, and so do I. Katniss grows to love Peeta. That can't be ignored. Yes they've trauma bonded. They are both terribly broken and as a result there will be problems in the relationship, but I think a major theme with them is growth. Katniss grows to trust Peeta then grows to care about him. Peeta already likes Katniss, but he eventually realises he doesn't know her well enough and that he's coming on too strong, so he takes a step back and takes the time to get to know her. And decides he still loves her. I think this is beautiful as someone who was team Gale for years. I still like Gale, just not for Katniss. The way Katniss and Peeta weave in and out of each other, complimenting and contrasting is so... easily romanticized lol. At the very least they have a healthy respect and care for one another, loving as fellow humans with alike interest would.
@@catscan5720 I like the both of them, gale and peeta, for different reasons. I do think however that gale’s character was intentionally ruined by the author in the last book, as it is with most love triangles in media. Which is why I hate reading or watching the love triangle trope, because one of the characters within the relationship always does something completely unredeeming that doesn’t at all relate to how the character was represented in the past, all to make the other character seem to be the correct choice all along. Personally I believe katniss shouldn’t have been with either of them in the end, seeing as the whole point of the story wasn’t romance but instead the impact of a corrupted government and the power the average person holds to create an uproar in people’s hearts, causing them to fight for what they believe in
I got my mom to watch this for the first time this past weekend. she got so into it & was asking a bunch of questions & before they even got to the arena she said “this is so much better than I thought it was gonna be.” she wanted to start catching fire right after even though it was already 2AM & we had plans in the morning lmao
18:54 it's been over 10 years and I'm still sad that one of my favorite scenes from the book was not included in the movie, where Cato runs to Clove and she dies in his arms, and he cries and asks her to stay with him :( it was after this scene in the book that I realized that they are not villains, but also just kids who were fucked by the system
something i love, and its something nobody talks about, is how in the very beginning the games are called a "pageant" like how today he have beauty pageants and glam pageants. its not a game, its not a fight, its a pageant
Actually I think a bunch of the tributes dying in the beginning makes a whole lot of sense. The tributes (mostly the careers) want to kill as many people as they can in the beginning while everyone is at the cornucopia out in the open and really disoriented, running on pure adrenaline. Doing so eliminates a whole lot of the competition for them, and obviously the main goal is to win and come out of the games alive and (hopefully for them) relatively unscathed. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk
Yes, I am DOWN for the Gale slander and you continuing on with the rest of the series! You took me out with “is Bowser here?” and the tree comments - oak, cedar, on fire. I always love when you scream in excitement at your favourite bits. Never stop being you lol. I also always thought that the main reason why Team Gale people liked him back in the day was because of their crush on Liam not necessarily because they truly liked Gale.
Honestly, I was team Gale, but not because of the movies, but because Gale is her friend first and foremost. He took care of her family while she was at the hunger games, keeping their promise, he took them into safety when district 12 was attacked etc. He did have a crush on her, but I think he just surpressed his feelings because he thought that they agreed it wasn't the time for romance, since they had bigger worries. He was not the best friend friend during the second book and the whole "choosing him or me" thing, but it is quite understandable since he didn't know how to properly respond and he knew that he couldn't handle seeing Katness and Peeta together. I think that is pretty good of him to recognize that he can't handle that. But, he really did try to be there for her and was all in all a good friend. About the "he killed Prim", he didn't know. He thought out a plan, naively pitched it because he was enraged with the capitol, forgot to see the human side and it ended up killing so many people that didn't need to die. It was his mistake, but he is, just like the other a victem and a kid. It was out of his hand. (if I recall correctly) I just hated the ending, saying that Gale was kissing some girl from district 2 and they haven't spoken in years or something, because: they were friends. And I still believe they should have just talked to eachother. But I do want to add, I didn't like Peeta as much because it felt like he was pushing his feelings onto Katness, in a different way. But I didn't hate him. During book 3 I was just hoping for a: "and they all remained friends, found someone they truly loved without horrifying circomstances and were able to heal a little" ending.
as a teenage ream gale only because i thought he was cute, that was so true. rewatching these as an adult i was like wtf was i thinking liking this man omg
@@In_Spite i think it’s fair to say that gale was a product of his environment. however mockingjay is where his character takes a downward turn. he is understandably enraged with the capitol but he completely lacks empathy and just sees it as “us vs them” mentality. he designed the double bomb creation to take as many lives as possible, because that’s what you do in war. he knew that the second bomb would most likely be affecting medics and innocent people. i don’t think he knew prim would be there, but he had so many opportunities to learn empathy and not take as many lives as possible. throughout all of mockingjay him and katniss grow apart because they’ve experienced things differently. katniss sees people as people, where gale only sees allies vs enemies. he and coin grow closer together in their goal, while katniss and finnick grow closer together in their trauma. i also don’t like how gale is like “yeah i thought maybe you and finnick had a thing” when they very clearly didn’t. i also felt like gale was more unhappy about katniss and peeta than her even surviving the first games. i obviously am not a fan of gale, but i think he is a very interesting character but he grew into his hatred and didn’t take the time to really learn, even though katniss presented him with all the opportunity.
In the end of the book at the end of The hunger games Peter was almost dead bleeding out with a tourniquet in his leg. Katniss was so traumatized that she thought that the rescue by the capitol was going to hurt him also and was banging up against the glass that separated them thinking the doctors were going to hurt him
Peeta loved her since forever, saved her life when they were kids and even knowing that she didn't love him back (at the beggining) he respected her and did everything to keep her safe anyways.
her and peeta’s relationship is very forced for their survival and to please the capital, like snow fr says that if she doesn’t make their relationship believable that he’s going to kill gale and her family. After having to fake something for that long in order to SURVIVE, there’s no possible way to know if you’re starting to catch real feelings for them, or if it’s your mind telling you that you like them in order to keep you alive and safe. It’s just not a healthy relationship in my opinion
Watching this whole series again as an adult really made me realize Gale had no good quality up against him, and it was just my shameful middle school self that fell for the ol’ pretty privilege tactic.
I like gale more and not just because of his looks 😂 I just really like his character, and her and peeta’s relationship is very forced for their survival and to please the capital, like snow fr says that if she doesn’t make their relationship believable that he’s going to kill gale and her family. So I actually met the actor who played Cato in person because he was shooting a movie at my college. He’s actually super sweet and stopped to take pictures with a ton of people.
Embarassing, but I did a fanfiction I never posted, where peta ate the berries and katness won alone. So the quarter quell was there would be two winners to show the capitols mercy. It followed someone from the cattle district, who knew she wouldn't survive another winter anyway, so she volunteered as tribute so she could at least die with a full belly. She made a pact with a district 1 trubute gladius, to kill her quickly, but he deviced to use her as a tool instead. She got the games first zero for her odds of survival. It was fun, I had a full list of tributes and their back stories, how everyone dies and tied it all into a bigger story. I designed the arena with a horror theme and had maps. There was a lake full of zombies of previous tributes, a forrest that came alive and had poison apples, a mansion loosly using early resident evil games, etc, and even designed puzzles for the mansion. There was someone from the electric grid district who went nuts and was going around with a baseball bat wrapped in electrified barbed wire. And most of the career pack ended up in the mansion trying to work out puzzles, getting seperated, meeting up, running into monsters, etc.
6:04-That thing you mentioned about the mentors forming a bond with the tributes only to then watch them d!e is actually further explored in the books. Haymitch had A LOT of awful stuff happen to him, and one of those terrible tragedies was living through this every year. Eventually he became distant with the tributes as a coping mechanism, he'd train them but wouldn't try to get attached in any way because he knew how things most likely would end :( Anyway on a lighter note...you're absolutely right about the members of "Team Gale" just having a crush on Liam Hemsworth hahaha, or at least that was the case for me. Kinda unrelated but I'm an avid watcher of Netflix's "The Witcher", starring the man, the myth, the talented and dreamy legend...Henry Cavill! The thing is that last year, they announced that he'd be leaving the show and Liam Hemsworth would be taking his place :( This sucks but what's funny is that 10-year-old me would've been LIVING for that casting change...19-year-old me, however? Yeah, not so much...honestly kinda h@te it. And it's not really because I dislike Liam Hemsworth as an actor (he's allegedly done some questionable stuff in his personal life but that's beside the point) he's great at his job...but NOBODY can replace the ICONIC LEGEND TAKEN OUT OF A DAYDREAM that is Henry Cavill :(
You know how people feel protective over their love for Twilight? Hunger Games is my equivalent. I was having such a hard day, I'm so happy you posted this Ashley thank you💕
I just reread all the books and finally read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and omg THE CONTEXT!! THE CONNECTIONS!! The absolute artistry of the way that Suzanne Collins weaved those stories together was honestly one of the most impactful additions to the story she could’ve produced. I certainly wasn’t thrilled when I heard what it was about tbh, but telling the stories of the other victors when the games just continued on for them after the fact would probably just feel redundant…like the games feel to the districts, maybe? It’s wild because it seems like a lot of people who like the books/movies do not understand the political implications or the true meaning behind the books. They feel very um… welll… capital. The hate for the prequel was SO unwarranted. It’s def not a necessary read to love the trilogy, but if you want to really understand how the games became what they were, what Snow did to make him the cruel leader he became and why Katniss triggers every spiteful, hateful inclination he has then I would 100% recommend that you read it! It’s def a slower pace, but man I was living for it. Made me despise him that much more, but now I completely understand what motivated him and that just makes the story more complete to me. I’m so excited for the movie in November!! Edited to add: Gale and Snow hold the same place in my heart. Had Gale been born in the capital and experienced life in the same way that Coriolanus did, they would be indistinguishable from one another.
14:36 He's saving her even then, because they could've just kept trying to shoot her with arrows and one of them might have hit. If they all stay the night she has a chance to escape.
II really like his character 😂 and her and peeta’s relationship is very forced for their survival and to please the capital, like snow fr says that if she doesn’t make their relationship believable that he’s going to kill gale and her family. 09:12 it's not only that, but i still find it so interesting how that scene is a read on kids being able to "playfully fight", like go around playing they're killing eachother, which is incredibly insane on the context they're at. not only that but add on to the fact that they're capitol kids, playing "kill" around their parents that pay them no mind, they can afford to do that, they can afford to laugh at the expense of death because theyre, after all, kids, and being raised by privilege teaches them they are going to win in the end. it's kind of the same as a bunch of rich kids being gifted haunting guns by the age of 12 as a sport or fun, well knowingly of (or even worse: carelessly) the context of the country they live in
Ooohh I interpreted that scene as like idk rich people being able to cosplay poor but be able to go back to their cushy lives at the end, meanwhile real poor people don’t habe that luxury. Like when people make those living on a dollar on the street challenge for an example
One of the details that I find so chilling and so important is the way everyone in the capitol goes out of their way to NOT call the tributes children. Instead they say female, male, young person. I think the only one who does at some point is Effie because she does say boys and girls during both reapings in the series, but she also says men and ladies, so it's not exactly the same.
the way i was DRAGGED for being team peeta back in the day and now everyone finally sees how awful gale is and how amazing peeta is...idk if i should be happy or bitter
One thing ab this series is how incredibly well it holds up over time and how there are always more and more layers to peel back and new details to discover with each watch and read. I’m so excited for the rest of this series, and I will absolutely be the first one in and the last one out of that theater when TBOSAS comes out!! THG was also one of the most book-accurate film franchises to have been made in that time. Obviously there are things changed and left out or added BUT if you watch the Lost in Translation video on the series, you see just how closely they followed the books, and I really respect that. But what bothered me ab the love triangle in the films was 1) how it feeds into the “a boy and a girl can’t be platonic in the long-term” rhetoric, but also how Peeta’s character was watered down so much from the books- that man was TOO SMART in the books for him to have been reduced to Katniss’ sad puppy boy in the films. And I love how Suzanne basically blew up the love triangle by the third film bc Gale played a large part in how and why the entire purpose of Katniss volunteering in the games became reduced to ash.
While they did water Peeta down, you could still understand from his strokes of genius in the movies that he was much smarter than he let on. After all, he was the one who triggered the whole "star-crossed lovers" image with the confession how he was sent to the Games with Katniss, the girl he had feelings for, not to mention he was the one to drop the bombshell with Katniss's supposed pregnancy once they were sent back in the arena for the Quarter Quell. Katniss took things as they were and as they came, but Peeta was thinking at least one or two steps ahead even in the movies.
@@floraflowers yeah most definitely! And omg I remember being in the theater when he dropped the “if it weren’t for the baby” and THE SCREAMS that rang through that theater rivaled those during Breaking Dawn pt. 2. Like it was EVERYTHING! But I absolutely agree that he was still smart- it’s just that he was made a bit more useless AND the movies left out his prosthetic leg, which I think was a bad move on their part bc it added so much to their characters and the way they behaved in Catching Fire.
Team Peeta all the way!! I’m currently re watching the movies in prep for the new movie and I’m so happy you’re watching them too!! I saw a tweet a while ago saying that if the games were real, Jimmy Fallon would be our version of ceaser flickerman and I’ve never been able to watch the movies the same 💀💀
I keep thinking about the theory that the reapings aren't random and that they were specifically designed to pick people to have the outcome the capital wants.... so like every paper in the pools had prim and peeta's name on it because katniss was breaking rules and helping out the ppl in district 12 through her hunting, so they wanted to keep her down by picking prim (they wouldn't want to pick katniss because she has a chance to win), and picking peeta because he was part of one of the more wealthy family's in the district that also provided food to the people and they wanted to say that no one is safe and to keep everyone on the brink of starvation or something like that..... in da BRAIN
Thus defeats the purpose of the story bc it would make Katniss a “chosen one”, which Suzanne wanted to make clear she wasn’t and it was done by chance.
@@angelina3087 I don't think it necessarily defeats the purpose? If this theory were true (def not saying it is!) they still didn't expect people to volunteer in the lower districts, especially not 12, so she still isn't 'chosen.' With how much shady stuff the capital does, it's not really surprising to me that they would rig the reapings to keep morale at an all time low, especially at such a fragile time. Snow already has eyes everywhere (tho am not sure if he had cameras and stuff were set up prior to the 74th games🤔 it's been a while since I read it) too so it isn't far fetched that the capital would keep intel on the happenings in the districts. Plus with everything being so fragile, anyone still could've been in katniss' shoes. Her acts of rebellion weren't particularly special, I feel a lot of kids would've done the same/similar things if they had the chance and ability too. I do understand your point though, and I don't think the theory is true, but it is interesting to think about :)
I don’t like that theory, like that other comment said I think it genuinely does defeat the purpose of it. Plus my issue is why wouldn’t they target gale if they were targeting Katniss for that reason? He literally does the same thing and not only that, Gale is way more dangerous than katniss. Not only does he hunt illegally and give food to the district, he is very openly anti capitol. He hates them and says the most brutal things that they should do to the people there all the time. Katniss doesn’t. Plus Gale has his name in the bowl over twice as many times. It would make way more sense to target him. He is the actual open threat if the captiol actually knew this. Plus no offence to the person who came up with it but I think the Peeta one is quite a stretch to make it seem like it’s deliberate, sure the baker family are better off but they aren’t rich, they can’t afford their own bread and if so… why Peeta? Why wouldn’t they have chosen one of Peeta’s older brothers at the time? An older brother of Peeta’s was still young enough to be repeaped instead and those two were way more likely to get handed the bakery later than life over Peeta. Plus if it was more about being rich and showing that no one is safe, Madge would make even more sense as a bigger scare to people as the mayors daughter. So to me according to that theory, having Gale and Madge be targeted would just make more actual sense to me if they wanted impact. Plus… if they knew katniss was doing what she was doing… they can easily just kill her straight up. Like what’s the point in doing all that? They can just kill katniss and gale anyway straight away for doing something illegal and that’s that solved.
@@clover2739 I honestly really like your analysis!! I do agree that Peeta's reasoning is p shoddy, and doesn't make sense entirely, and it makes more sense for them to target Gale. As well as if they knew they were doing illegal things they could just kill them without getting much backlash since executions were a thing at that time in the books, right? Like I said it's been a while since I read it, so I don't remember all the details haha My reasoning (which isn't too solid either) for not just killing Katniss and Gale off the bat if they knew they were doing illegal things would be just because the Capital likes ✨spice✨ and maybe planned to just have their spirits killed due to the games? Like obviously if Prim died in the games it would ruin Katniss, and since Gale was attached to her hip, Gale would in turn get ruined. ALSO I assume they wouldn't want to actually send Gale to the Hunger Games because he has a decent chance of winning too (same with why they picked Prim rather than Katniss in the theory). In that vain tho if they determined Gale as an actual threat and knew he was doing illegal things, I think they wouldn't really waste any time in just killing him imo But yeah basically I do agree with you haha I think your reasoning makes a lot of sense why the theory doesn't hold up, so thanks for responding!!
@@eggnificentcos I do see what you mean with your reasoning! I do get the idea of that, but I also think targeting Prim would actually be more dangerous because Katniss would probably be broken of course, but she’d have nothing to lose anymore and going after prim like that would more likely bring on a riot. Gale is attached to Katniss by the hip but if they listen to what gale says, it wouldn’t be worth it. He has a lot of rage and hostility I think with how he reacts to things, they would see that it wouldn’t kill his spirit but instead would make him more dangerous at the injustice of everything. Katniss would make more sense for them to think that due to their reactions in the woods, cause Katniss is more quiet and doesn’t see the point of thinking about revolutions or acting out and she more shuts down. Gale is someone who responds by lashing out and giving it back. With his talks of starting a revolution for years, I think it would be way too risky to not actually target Gale instead. Although I do agree he’d be a very high contender to win so I think a public execution would make more sense for him rather than putting him in the games, he’s way more rebellious than Katniss so he’d probably be anti capitol in the interviews on tv and spark his on revolution in his own way which would be a danger to them. Plus with Katniss in the games, after she volunteered they didn’t seem to have real issue with her. In fact everyone adored Katniss and they would rather of her just won in the end because they knew Peeta wouldn’t have killed Katniss with the rule change. It was the berries that set them off and actually made Snow keep watch on her. The thing about district 12 was that it was so low that people didn’t pay attention to what was happening and were lazy with it. I genuinely think they just didn’t notice Katniss or gale or cared, it was only after she won that they watched what she was doing. That’s why in the book they actually put electricity on the fence while she was out there so she couldn’t get back in and then after breaking her heel and brushing her tail bone to get it, the electricity stayed on. If they were watching gale and Katniss before that, they wouldn’t have let them provide the district for that long, they would’ve just turned on the electricity like they were supposed to you know? I do think the peeta thing especially with the theories is a bit much, I can kind of understand the prim thing but what people say with peeta feels like a stretch. I think it would make more sense if people just said that prim was deliberate but Peeta was just chance or something. Plus if it was deliberate people would have to make up reasons why every tribute ever was picked and that would be quite taxing. Like Katniss mothers friend was reaped for the same games that Haymitch won, then people would have to think of reasons why they’d be picked. I only think that the quarter quell was rigged and that’s all tbh.
Glimmer's plan to survive was to get close to people and let them do the killing and then eventually kill them. She had a ring with an tiny poisons blade that was taken before the games.
I really like gale’s character 😂 and her and peeta’s relationship is very forced for their survival and to please the capital, like snow says that if she doesn’t make their relationship believable that he’s going to kill gale and her family. Gale slander is a result of people giving into the love triangle allure and forgetting the fact that while symbolic every character in this story is supposed to be human and have faults. The similarities between Gale and Katniss are so similar that I hope more people are able to big brain and realize that Gale is not a villain, he's a product of his circumstances. He's angry just like Katniss was. The difference is Katniss doesn't want revenge and much more so at the end she's a weak, damaged shell of her former fiery self. Gale never lost that fire cause he wasn't in the games. Also he didn't kill Prim. Coin did. Closest person to "kill Prim by proxy" was Beety or whatever his name was. Cause he actually made the thing and helped deploy it. Yes it was Gale's idea but he interned to kill Capital members, and was with Katniss the whole time this plan was being set in motion
Unpopular opinion: Cato isn't the villain. His whole speech at the end is about realizing the games were rigged against him. There's a theory (that I firmly believe) that this arena was specific to Katniss, as Snow knew she would sneak into the woods by her house and would be willing to have a girl from a lower district win (as he says, a little hope is a good thing). The arena in CF is also probably rigged to have Finnick as the winner
These movies marked my generation, dude. I was a freshman in high school when this came out, and I remember seeing it in theaters like it was yesterday! That blood bath scene, the silence in the movie audio and the theater, chills. So freaking good.
I hate how Gale blamed Katniss for getting into relationship Peeta to survive and how he blamed Peeta for saying things he wouldn't normally say to SURVIVE!!!!!!!!!!
@@taylormade9748 no he cant, he has no right. He knew tht everything Katniss did in the games was to survive and get back to Prim but ofc Gale's ego couldnt handle and understand that. Even Peeta acknowledged tht the things Katniss said and did to Peeta was just to survive and he even apologized for holding tht against her and being cold towards her. It was never Katniss' fault she did no wrong.
@@avatrice3077 but I can understand how seeing the person you love doing that would hurt, but I also understand that Katniss and Peeta were doing what they had to do to survive. Duality

I LOVE this franchise and it is what inspired me to start doing archery. I’ve been doing it for like 11 years now 🫣 and thank god cuz honestly archery has helped me mentally, so much. it helps me with stress & anxiety primarily. When u have the bow in hand, you’re at full draw, and you’re locked in on the target. there’s no other feeling like it. The only things that exist are you, the bow/arrow, and the target. everything else fades away. you have to be mentally focused and calm. its like the world stands still and is at peace. no more stress, no more nerves. which is great cuz when I’m experiencing a lot of anxiety/stress my mind is all over the place. but archery allows me to calm down. not only is it fun, but it’s also a form of therapy for me. it requires discipline & patience. which is something I desperately needed to improve 😭
@@marzblaq7267 that’s so funny I actually started learning knife throwing at the same time as archery, because of Clove!! I haven’t kept up with it as much as archery, but it’s definitely fun as well!
2:06 it's interesting how some members of the rebel plan to keep katniss and peeta alive at all costs, several of the victors won in ways that literally went against the "fun" spectacle of the games. two of them just hid the entire time, and johanna acted meek pretty much the entire time, giving people no reason to root for her. literally IF IM NOT GONNA HAVE FUN, YALL ARENT GONNA HAVE FUN WATCHING
OKAY but does anyone remember in the books those dogs at the end had the faces of the other tributes and screamed like them or am I remembering wrong?! Also STRONG AGREED WITH GALE SLANDER
6:14 that's why Haymitch is so distant, and why he drinks, he's all screwed up from that. He was so mean to Katniss, but that's because he liked her so much
I grew up being team gale and that’s why I have relationship issues today. P.s; I always saw him as the stable option. Family oriented, hard worker, a provider, they were already good friends, etc. Then when I got older I rewatched and saw how much chemistry peeta and katniss have and I completely looked over that…. Same w the men in my life, I’ll go out with someone that on paper I think is better for me, and I convince myself the feelings will develop later💀
Don't be too hard on yourself. I tend to like arseholes or unavailable guys and I think it is because I am looking to find my own individuality, which by feeling attracted to these guys, it seems I aim to become more independent or dominant like them. Sometimes I see guys like Peeta and if they chose me to be their partner, I'd feel like it's too good to be true. Too easy, too flowing. I think I've got to reach the point where I don't need to exteriorise on others what I seek inside of myself and where I can accept I deserve that happiness and stability I'd have with someone like Peeta.
When I first watched the movies I preferred gale cause he was barely in it and peetah annoyed me so bad cause of the one sided love and I felt like katniss was being pressured to love peetah back just to survive. I didn’t like either as romantic potential though because it didn’t seem like katniss wanted her relationships with them to be like that. I haven’t watched the movies in years and I watched them as a kid so I may need to rewatch them to better understand the relationships now but I remember being devastated when they showed the ending to the last movie being katniss looking miserable with peetah and having had TWO KIDS I was like WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MY WOMAN lmao. I think the books will add better context to their relationship.
@@niknekoops Eh, all right, so... I haven't read the books in ages, but I remember Katniss loves Peeta in the books. She does. When she was a child and her father had died, they were starving (her mum, Prim and her). Katniss was doing something (can't recall what) and she fainted in front of his house. He went out of his way to give her a loaf of bread, for which his mother beat him. He gave Katniss hope. She appreciated it. In the books, much as in the films, she has nightmares and goes to sleep with him. Katniss loves him. It's just that there is a war going on, she's very pessimistic (understandable) and doesn't want to dream because she's too full of pressures, trauma and pain. In the ending she didn't look miserable, what are you talking about? She was happy. Katniss always wanted to have a family, it's just that she didn't want to have them in that corrupted ugly world. Snow was toppled and voilà, presumably the new president will do things right. She was happy because even though she's still trauma-ridden, she has hope and a family that she loves. Life.
Hi Ashley! I just wanted to say that your videos are always so fun, and that you’re honestly one of my favourite commentary channels lol. Keep slaying queen 😭😭
Katniss and Peeta's love story is beautiful. It feels organic and real. They bond over their trauma and become the best power couple. Their devotion to each other is really underrated. Moving on, i highly recommend The Maze Runner thrilogy. It stars Dylan O' Brien and it's a really interesting concept. Love from Argentina ♥

@@tannerv259 You have the actual movies to see that their relationship develops into something real and honest. The only "forced" relationships in these movies is the one with Gale. You can see the difference with every interaction she has with both of them. She has to fake her relationship for the first movie and in the second one they show you she actually does love him. The third and fourth one only reinforces the fact that it's real. Finnick even says it, that he thought it was an act until peeta almost died, she lost it and he realized it was real. What bonds them is trauma, not repetition for "faking it' during the first games. Both the movies and the books confirm the fact that's real.
@@luciaelizabeth9233 I disagree 🤷🏻 in such a traumatizing situation there’s no way you could ever know how you really feel about someone you’re being forced to “love” for survival. The mind is too powerful and will do anything to keep you alive until you’re out of that situation, which would explain why she reacted that way when peeta was being hurt
@@luciaelizabeth9233 and In the book I have screenshots of her thinking about peeta and how she never sees it going anywhere and only thinks of him as a friend. Idk I just don’t think she would have ever picked him to be in a relationship w if it wasn’t out of necessity
@@tannerv259 I base my commentary on the ACTUAL information the movies give you. It starts being fake and for survival but it develops into something real. The characters tells you this, the dialogue tells you this and the scenes tell you this. You can develop feelings for someone you didn't before, regardless of the circumstances. Trauma bonding is real. They start being thrown together, having to fake a "love story", to being friends and partners in the game they are being forced to play and eventually develops into love. It's not that far fetched. It's not an opinion. It is what the movies show you and what they tell you in the story. You are entitled to your opinion based on real life circumstances but when it comes to the movies available, they made it clear that their relationship develops from survival, to friendship, to love.
I was just rewatching these movies to recap before the new one comes out, and I was surprised at how well they held up! Would love to see you do the rest and talk about how villainous Gale is.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, lol 😂❤

True, I didn't even recognise her till someone told me
I think in the books Peeta was making it very clear to the audience that he only followed the careers to keep Katniss safe.
I think the enduring story of the movies is that “Katniss just couldn’t tell”… 😅🤷🏻♂️
Gale would’ve been such a better character if he wasn’t obsessed with katniss and was her cousin instead!
@@unniebunny2551YESSS
Great point! Peeta would never distance himself from Katniss if she choose Gale (only if she wanted him too).
@@JustLIkerapunzel maybe from Gale's side but Katniss had no romantic feelings towards him
@@JustLIkerapunzel in the books gale doesnt tell her he has these feelings for her until after he sees her with peeta in the first games. he says that he started feeling that way like 6 months before the reaping but katniss is very confused by this because her feelings for gale were very platonic at this point. she also does know peeta in the books because they grew up in the same class together. other than the fact that he was the catalyst for hope when she was starving and dying after her dad died, she also mentions how she’s noticed him in school and wrestling and a bunch of stuff. also in the books she is just so confused by her feelings and really doesn’t have time for either of them because there’s more important things going on.

I am always so happy when someone catches the fact that the reason she missed the first shot was the fact that this is not her bow. But yeah it's so refreshing to see people understand that every bow is different depending on poundage and the materials it is made of and that it takes time getting used to shooting with different bows.
Its like 4+ shots to adjust in the books iirc but still impressive!

He was the worst in the books, too. Ugh.
Gale never actually cared about Katniss' feelings, and I hate him so much
He,'s worse in the books
I can't tell you how many times my sister and I rolled our eyes and said "Shut up, Gale" whenever we decided to rewatch the series together because he was really only thinking about himself when it came to Katniss. Props to saving people and keeping families alive and all but I would hate to know him on a personal level like she did.
yup... I agree Gale was a selfish jerk thru most of the story timeline.
Excellent point!! Well said.
Just me though
yeah i was gonna say that cut was definitely intentional and most people don’t notice it when watching the movie casually
The cut was still stupid.

One part I remember is when Cato finds Clove dead, his defeat and sadness when he saw her and realized that she was gone and then Katniss explaining how truly corrupt the games are. And I know how ruthless the careers were but they were, in the end, still just pawns in a terrifying game.

@@zanlani the scene with Clove was really sad, I remember when I first read it. It really does hit home that they are all innocent children.

Yeah. He was respectful. I liked that
And then there was Mockingjay
there was only one answer...team Prim, Katniss is constantly saying Prim is the only person she's certain she loves, I think the books were totally about her relationship with her sister where as the movies really played up a romantic theme, the similarities between the game makers and Hollywood agents/directors are pretty significant... its no surprise that the movies played up a relationship just like the games did to get viewers to more quickly emotionally invest in the story

Disagree with the last part.

I see your point.
Personally I believe katniss shouldn’t have been with either of them in the end, seeing as the whole point of the story wasn’t romance but instead the impact of a corrupted government and the power the average person holds to create an uproar in people’s hearts, causing them to fight for what they believe in
I got my mom to watch this for the first time this past weekend. she got so into it & was asking a bunch of questions & before they even got to the arena she said “this is so much better than I thought it was gonna be.”
she wanted to start catching fire right after even though it was already 2AM & we had plans in the morning lmao
Me too 😭
something i love, and its something nobody talks about, is how in the very beginning the games are called a "pageant" like how today he have beauty pageants and glam pageants. its not a game, its not a fight, its a pageant
Agreed. It's also the only time during the games that all of the tributes are in the exact same place at the exact same time.
YES more Hunger Games please please please. Also I think the fandom uses Everlark for Katniss and Peeta which is a MICH better ship name lol

Yes, I am DOWN for the Gale slander and you continuing on with the rest of the series! You took me out with “is Bowser here?” and the tree comments - oak, cedar, on fire. I always love when you scream in excitement at your favourite bits. Never stop being you lol.
I also always thought that the main reason why Team Gale people liked him back in the day was because of their crush on Liam not necessarily because they truly liked Gale.
yes omg i rarely audibly laugh but that bowser comment made me choke on my water & laugh out loud hahaha
This is the proof that pretty privilege exists.
(if I recall correctly)
I just hated the ending, saying that Gale was kissing some girl from district 2 and they haven't spoken in years or something, because: they were friends.
I never understood the Peeta thing.
So I actually met the actor who played Cato in person because he was shooting a movie at my college. He’s actually super sweet and stopped to take pictures with a ton of people.
It’s honestly perfect that Ash is watching this series now so she can prepare herself for the prequel coming out in November. 😂
And most of the career pack ended up in the mansion trying to work out puzzles, getting seperated, meeting up, running into monsters, etc.
wow that's amazing! 😮😮😮😮😮😮
That sounds really fun!
Pls publish it one day so we can read it 🙏🏾
Publish it!!!
6:04-That thing you mentioned about the mentors forming a bond with the tributes only to then watch them d!e is actually further explored in the books. Haymitch had A LOT of awful stuff happen to him, and one of those terrible tragedies was living through this every year. Eventually he became distant with the tributes as a coping mechanism, he'd train them but wouldn't try to get attached in any way because he knew how things most likely would end :(
Anyway on a lighter note...you're absolutely right about the members of "Team Gale" just having a crush on Liam Hemsworth hahaha, or at least that was the case for me.

CAN WE APRECIATE HOW MUCH WORK SHE PUTS INTO THESE VIDEOS FOR US LIKE QUEEN!!!!❤
I honestly think that hating on Gale is one of my favorite things to do. But at the same time, thinking about him makes me want to vomit

Videos on yt, but I wish I had also thought of it like that !

“Oh you want a tree,ok” “ you want oak or cedar” “oh you want on fire got it” truly took me out 💀💀
the rue scene always tears me up no matter how many times i watch it, never loses its novelty 💔
I NEVER see anyone being team gale besides me 😭

@@tannerv259Yeah because that’s an embarrassing stance to take lmao.
Always thought Gale was so freaking selfish. Peeta written for the girls and the gays deserved everything just as much as Finnick did.
im so ashamed I was team gale bf 😭😭
I saw a tweet a while ago saying that if the games were real, Jimmy Fallon would be our version of ceaser flickerman and I’ve never been able to watch the movies the same 💀💀
I will never forgive this movie for taking out so much of Peeta's absolutely adorable dialogue
Right?? Like where is all of Peeta’s rizz? They really got rid of 80% of his personality, like yes he’s a softie but that man has snark
Like I said it's been a while since I read it, so I don't remember all the details haha
My reasoning (which isn't too solid either) for not just killing Katniss and Gale off the bat if they knew they were doing illegal things would be just because the Capital likes ✨spice✨ and maybe planned to just have their spirits killed due to the games? Like obviously if Prim died in the games it would ruin Katniss, and since Gale was attached to her hip, Gale would in turn get ruined. ALSO I assume they wouldn't want to actually send Gale to the Hunger Games because he has a decent chance of winning too (same with why they picked Prim rather than Katniss in the theory). In that vain tho if they determined Gale as an actual threat and knew he was doing illegal things, I think they wouldn't really waste any time in just killing him imo
But yeah basically I do agree with you haha I think your reasoning makes a lot of sense why the theory doesn't hold up, so thanks for responding!!

It’s just not a healthy relationship innnn my opinion

8:06 The concept of careers was chilling when I read the book. They cast them so well.
OKAY but does anyone remember in the books those dogs at the end had the faces of the other tributes and screamed like them or am I remembering wrong?!
Also STRONG AGREED WITH GALE SLANDER
THATS TERRIFYING OH MY LAWD
Yh, and Katniss legit getting PTSD from seeing Rue's eyes and shit 😭😭
Yes! They were designed to look like the dead tributes in the book. That was crazy psychological warfare for the tributes 😭
i love how you are mentioning the details from the book, so true of you!!!
ok but some of these things i forgot i even remembered from the book. like i didnt realize how engraved this series was in my head till now
@@urinternetmomash i get you!!! i don’t even notice how much of these books i know until i’m rewatching the movies
We need you to do the whole series because I NEED your play-by-play to everything Finnick 🥵
Please continue on with the series. I love this series so much and I think it’s so fun that you’re finally watching it for us ❤
6:14 that's why Haymitch is so distant, and why he drinks, he's all screwed up from that. He was so mean to Katniss, but that's because he liked her so much
We demand the whole series, thank you queen 😌
Life.
It's called growing up. We learn better as we get older
@@newbabies923 Thinking of her, her. All my life, now I go down.
I screamed when I saw this video on my home page! I am so excited for you to do this series as it is one of my all time FAVORITES!!
5:10 IM SO GLAD YOU SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS CAUSE ITS BOTHERED ME FOR YEARS
5:01 It’s not shown, but Primrose tucking in her shirt on the way up to the pedestal just dropkicks you right in the heart.
Hi Ashley! I just wanted to say that your videos are always so fun, and that you’re honestly one of my favourite commentary channels lol. Keep slaying queen 😭😭
Rachel Berry??? 😭😭😭
These movies deserve the new recognition they´re having. Can´t wait for the new one in november
Love from Argentina ♥
her and peeta’s relationship is very forced for their survival and to please the capital, like snow fr says that if she doesn’t make their relationship believable that he’s going to kill gale and her family. After having to fake something for that long in order to SURVIVE, there’s no possible way to know if you’re starting to catch real feelings for them, or if it’s your mind telling you that you like them in order to keep you alive and safe. It’s just not a healthy relationship innn my opinion
Would love to see you do the rest and talk about how villainous Gale is.
this reacting to hunger games series has got to be one of my favorite vids on youtube. the humor is amazing and the editing is so well done
Calling Gale a “hidden enemy” is just so 🤌
I have been on the biggest hunger games kick for the past few weeks. this was the perfect video to make me laugh after an anxiety attack. ily. ty for what you do
oof anxiety attacks ... i get u unfortunately! drink plenty of water and rest ur body! sending my love
Ash about Seneca Crane: Like lemme ride his beard real quick. I'm sorry, I-
Me standing up amidst the flying tomatoes: *LET HER SPEAK!!!!!*
11:16: "He's a natural! Come on, Peeta Mellark!" It's funny, because in the very next movie, it's the exact opposite situation with him and Katniss. She ends up being a lot more charismatic and playful towards the cameras and he ends up being quite awkward lol
this entire video she was giving "Let me tell you something, LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING"
omg yes do a series for this !!! i want to continue this saga cuz i've been stuck on the second one so your videos might help to remember what happens 😭
Girl, PLEASE do all movies, we love to see Hunger games and catching fire is a work of art ❤️
Finally Our Internet Mom Is Back To Feed Us With This Great Content, Welcome Back Ashley ❤
3:53 I’m pretty sure in the books it said something like everytime they really needed food they would get a years worth of grains in exchange for putting their names in more times
Ash you should definitely do the whole saga, is my favourite saga of all time and I would love to rewatch it with you! Love ya! 💛
Yesss mother. I’m literally back in my hungers phase
LITERALLY SAME
yes please do the whole series if you have time. it’s such a beautiful one, i just rewatched it back a couple weeks ago. I think Mockingjay pt.1 is my favorite.
I watched all the hunger games movies back to back like 3 months ago and got obsessed. I found out there was a prequel book AND a movie coming out this year!!!! I finished the book this week I’ve turned into a hunger games stan these last few months. I can’t stop watching the trailer for the new movie. Just the world of Panem is so interesting!
I never realized that the show host played the serial killer in the lovely bones… mind just blown
