    Watching Marta drink from the coffee cup at the end of the movie while staring down the family was so satisfying. After the family constantly mistreated and exploited her, with none of them knowing where she was actually from and all of them "being outvoted" when it came to whether Marta should be invited to the funeral, Harlan giving everything to the one person that actually cared for him and was genuinely kind to him was great to see.

      @@jacobd1984 The sole reason why Martha got everything was, yes she was nice and a genuine person. But it's also cause she needed it. Since her mom is illegal she needs a secure way of having her mom stay in the country or she'll get deported, hence a home she doesn't need to pay rent to and stable income, the fortune and business.
      Knowing Martha if the people were really genuine to her, I'm sure she'd give the home and business to them cause all she needs is the fortune and then prolly have a job on the side for extra cash. But because everyone was a dick and the one person she though was a friend(the daughter) she's keeping everything, I mean I would.

      @@lizzyrank5405 She needed the money most of all for sure, but she didn’t need all of it. Harlan could have spared a bit for Fran too. I just figure, if he assumed Marta would help Fran anyway, why not handle it himself instead of putting her in charge of that? She’d have enough to worry about, between her mother, managing her new wealth, and the inevitability that the other Thrombeys would be pissed off.

    You said you're not super familiar with the genre, but one of the main tropes in a murder mystery is that the maid discovers the body, and she always drops the tray. When Fran finds Harlan, she doesn't drop the tray! It's like the director's way of saying "This isn't like any murder mystery you've seen."

  • @julesfoster3289
    @julesfoster3289 2 года назад +669

    I didn't put the whole thing together before the big reveal, but I was suspicious that it was more complicated than Marta accidentally killing him during the death scene. The clue that gave it away to me? The missing naloxone - no medical professional as capable as Marta would misplace such an important part of the drug kit. Which meant someone took it, which meant it was more complicated than just accidental overdose. Didn't figure out the switched bottles though, that was wild.
    A few more notes - it's mentioned that Harlan's dogs /hate/ Ransom and bark whenever they see him... and dog barking is what woke up (can't remember who) the night of the murder - it was a clue. Also, if you rewatch Blanc's first interaction with Marta, you'll see he spends a suspiciously long time looking down, because he noticed the bloodstain immediately.
    The thing about the Thrombey's that was so perfect is that they have wildly different political stances, viewpoints, etc but in the end they were all the same - they didn't respect Marta, only pretended to, and once she was a threat to their inheritance they banded together without hesitation. Just goes to show, no matter how performative your 'wokeness', it doesn't matter if you don't actually respect the people you pretend to care about. (Notice they never got Marta's country of origin correct - just kept throwing out different Latin American countries.) I also read somewhere Marta was the only one who /could/ have taken Harlan's legacy in the end, because only she would have been willing to use the coffee cup. The rest of the family would've found it dumb or cheesy, without realizing that's the whole point. They took themselves too seriously. Harlan never did take himself very seriously, hence his dumb coffee cup (which I love - don't roast me, it can be dumb and fun at the same time!).
    And that damn baseball was the best Chekov's gun I've seen in forever. It just kept going around in circles until the last minute when it finally went off with the letter reveal. Masterful.

      I think that's what I loved about Marta & Harlan's relationship. She was more of a family member to him than anyone else. The fact that he didn't want Marta to get caught because he was afraid for her mother to be deported. (Talking about intimate details of their life to each other). He relieved to Marta about Richard's cheating, knowing he could trust her to not say anything. And I just love their little bit when they're playing and he knocks over the board to not lose. But also how they call morphine "the good stuff". Hell, even him writing down that the "overdose" would be a great plot for his next mystery novel. It's the details that makes this so brilliant.

    • @ladynoluck
      @ladynoluck 2 года назад +71

      @@xiopaovid1215 plus knocking over the whole board to not lose was basically the same thing he did with his death. It’s much thinner, while toradol is more like glycerin in thickness. And removing the Narcan was SMART on the side of Chris evans character, it’s the only thing that could’ve delayed the respiratory effects of the morphine until they could get him to a hospital. @Kiss_My_Aspergers 2 года назад +7

      Toradol is the Ketorolac, right? I'm surprised he's on that and morphine, cos, having not seen the whole movie yet, he doesn't come across as someone living with chronic pain beyond the usual effects of aging? Certainly not to downplay those! But that's more a daily dose of Naproxen and 12-hour Advil scene, and we on a war wound/shitty genes/survived prolonged torture, abuse, or harsh conditions vibe in KO. Does the film explain what he has?
      My aunt is on Ketorolac + Oxycocet for her Dystonia (I'm also on Oxycocet, mainly for TMJ), but she recently had knee replacement surgery and was given a limited-time supply of morphine for her pain. The doctors apparently didn't want her on Ketorolac and morphine at the same time, but I don't know why, so it may be a reason totally unrelated to the interactions of the drugs themselves. 🤷 Or the person who told me misheard the doctors and it was a different combination they'd meant, or I misheard that person with the same result/solution.
      But, yeah. Sorry if I'm not being very straightforward or clear, I'm also on medical marijuana 😅 But yeah. Also, why is there no answer to Toradol overdoses? Is it like an acetaminophen overdose where it obliterates your liver? Or is it something else?

    Johnson has said he wanted to make a murder-mystery that wasn't just that all the way through. So he turned into a Hitchcock-style thriller for the middle segment then back to a murder-mystery for the denouement. Glass Onion is also brilliant; it has a *very* different setting and different plot structure, but is just as satisfying. Review that please!

    This movie does a great job of subverting expectations. You think, there must be more to Harlan's death, to the mystery, etc. But they tell you everything in the first 15 minutes.
    Then it becomes a new mystery involving Fran, Ransom and Marta.
    The way it differs from normal mystery movies is that instead of giving you hints of information, Knives Out gives you anything you would want to know about everyone. That's why it's so good and so unexpected, because you constantly doubt the information.

    There's so many details about this movie that make it better and better the more times you watch it. For example, the detective would tap the piano to get back on track of the interrogation. Or how Ransom (Chris Evans) has holes in the collar of his sweater to show he's spoiled and doesn't appreciate the things he has. Amplifying another reason why Thromby removed him from the will.

    All the storylines come together so perfectly in the end, and I love the mix of humor with the darkness of the murder bc it’s not too dark for a murder mystery but it’s also not to forced in the humor side
    Also the cast and just the general vibes and the way it’s filmed make the movie fantastic

    I will say that although for most of the movie I was completely in the dark, once it started building up to the toxicology report I knew what was going to happen because they were relying on this incriminating evidence as a huge plot point so I kinda knew it was going to be perfectly normal... and from there I could work out that Marta hadn't given him the morphine, that Ransom had been up the trellis before Marta from the grandmother's "so soon" remark, and that he had come back again from the dogs barking that we saw at his first entrance (and I also knew it was going to be a prop knife from Harlan's very early line about it, but that was a little more obvious).
    That being said, I still had no clue how Blanc was going to figure it all out and how it would be resolved, and the final reveal that Fran was dead and Ransom had confessed to her murder was honestly fantastic. 10/10 film, I thought the casting and acting were incredible and I only hope the sequel can do it justice (going to miss ana as marta though, I loved her).
    (The only tiny issue I had was that the baseball had no real significance, I was waiting for it to be a clue or aid in the investigation and of course turned out to only be a neat way to tie up the Richard-affair storyline, which was still satisfying! Is it even a mystery without red herrings?)
