Because back then, no man alive would allow himself to be seen in painted-on jeans; whereas, in recent years, this absurd look has become the norm. The audience can't believe a man would actually dare to wear jeans that are that slim, straight-legged, and tight.
all the funny bits aside, it was funny how bad a job of editing they did of syncing the various shots in the driving scene vignette. I'm sure whoever did it would agree on rewatching.
