It's very refreshing to hear patches that aren't the original factory ones. The DX7 has so much untapped potential but everyone just knows it for the factory patches that were super overused in the 80s. Great demo.
Fantastic. Most videos just have people playing the presets on the DX, many of which were sort of cheesy sounding imitative sounds. When you really dig into digital fm you can get some of the most beautiful and some of the most frightening sounds imaginable. While I appreciate a good analog filter sweep or a fat analog bass patch, my two favorite forms of synthesis overall are digital fm and wavetable. Yamaha and PPG forever!
@@atmospharemusic yeahh, it's shitty that 99 reviewers make covers on pink Floyd and Depeche mode. But no covers on merzbow, lustmord, pgr, the hafler trio and others... I understand that reviewers try to show mainstream side of synths, but what about true underground?
The user interface was not terribly intuitive, plus FM synthesis requires a mind shift. Those are the major reasons why so many just have up and used the presets.
How great is the DX7! Amazing instrument and still very unappreciated due to how modern society tends to dismiss electronics as "easy". But the DX7 is a complex beast!
The dx7 is very appreciated, one of the most appreciated synths there has ever been. it is a basic 6 operator fm synth and not as hard to program as most think. Once you understand fm principals, and learn how to read algorithms, and navigate parameters, it is quite simple. If anything , the Envelope generator is hardest part to get used to.
If it was unappreciated then what was? It had 100k+ units shipped in 1980s, featured in tons of n1 hits in every genre, emulated in software countless times and set up a standard approach to FM synthesis, despite all of its limitations. And it's capable of really lots of things beyond its trademark electric pianos, tubular bells and synthetic brass and strings timbres.
@@Nooely yes I went through all the phases of software, mapping cc parameters with midi controllers.. but once I properly understand fm and where to access parameters on the dx7 it is just easier to use the dx7 its self
I got a lot by fiddling with my 4-operator DX-9. I used the slider for a lot of expression on some of the sounds I came up with. I came by amazing things just by trying to get the damn thing to sound analog!
Great sounds in here, 2.10 is superb. Had a tx81z for ages and love it, just got the TX7 for some good 6op fun. I see you are making lovely use of the lfo - I wish the og designers had put in more lfos and pitch envs.
It was capable of great sounds but it's been pointed out before that programming it was akin to painting the interior of your house through the letterbox.
@@annother3350 once you have Dexed it's like you've been let into the house, only to discover it was designed by M.C. Escher. For the life of me I cannot understand how to build a sound with FM synthesis. It's like trying to learn quantum physics.
@@jamespilcher5287 it does take a while. concentrate on one algorithm only and turn off all but two adajcent operators and fiddle with those two. just remember with the envelopes that 'up' means a faster rate not longer so the opposite of ADSR
It’s great watching this particular video on the heels of the ambient JX-8p video. It’s kind of like a full circle experience. The JX-8p I own was originally purchased by a guy who hadn’t done his homework about which synthesizer model he was searching for. My suspicion is that he was looking for the DX7 but instead landed on the JX-8p. What’s more, these DX patches sound almost synonymous with the JX patches which is awesome. Did you program both synthesizers yourself?
It’s a testament to how good you are at writing patches, @@atmospharemusic. They demonstrate that digital and analog could interact and emulate each other in fashions that many people keep insisting they cannot.

4:18. You could use this sound in some peaceful nature sounds with birds and other happy nature sounds. 4:42. Layer with 4:18 sound. 6:47. I can see this sound in Asian music. 7:23 I can see this sound as a wind up music box.8:33. Again Asian music with 6:47. Yes. 9:15. Can't wait to hear dark ambient/drone sounds from this synthesizer
Good idea! :)

This synth sounds just as mystical as the NED Synclavier or the FairLight
Didn’t know the dx7 had such diverse sounds, because of all the 80s there was a select group of sounds used, great video.

Superb demo! 👏👏👏👏
It really is too bad YAMAHA never made another 6OP chip after the OPS. These sounds are godly!

It's fine now we have Dexed to programme it
Those stupid membranes don’t help

DX7❤️
Un mostro 😁🎹🎶🎹💫
Excelente teclado!
5:14 That sounds more like a Rhodes than the official Rhodes sound!
Yes, I agree 😄
Also, you should listen to Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green. It's all FM synths
Do the newer Yamaha models have FM programming on them or they just sampled playback units?
Awesome!
Very top my Dx7IIFD💖🎹👦

I want to buy it !!
sounds great well done
Eu fecho os olhos e sinto q estou nos anos 80 sou guitarrista mas preciso ter um teclado desse
excellent sounds at a great price - let me first buy the synth and I'll come back, I promise :)
Dexed is free
Can the sysex patch file be imported in dexed software?
Yes

Very true. The MKII version sounds a bit plastic to me even.
Why do you think that is?
