Thank you for this tutorial, I have been crocheting for 42 years and never tried Tunisian crochet and really wanted to. Through your tutorial I feel that I can without being intimidated by it.

I just found your channel and this pattern! I love both :) I'll be doing this pattern, as time allows, while taking care of my adult son after his surgery. It's perfect because it's not too difficult to set down when needed and pick back up as time allows. Thank you so much for sharing!

I am new to crochet (have only made two previous Afghans in single crochet years ago) and found this tutorial very easy to follow. I finished two scarves, one with two skeins of Red Heart Mexicana and one in the Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable Candied (two skeins). My loops on the left and right side are bigger and the rows seem to slant down to the right, but my sister (an experienced crocheter and knitter) advised me that I would just have to block them. My daughter and granddaughter have both claimed a scarf!

I would love to make a hat or cowl using this same pattern, (4 rows knit stitch, one row cross stitch) (if I can figure out the number of stitches to start with and how to Tunisian crochet a hat, in general.)
I'm not sure the color changes with this sunrise yarn would be quite as pretty if the project was wider though. It seems to make nice stripes when making the scarf exactly as you did here.

Thank you for this tutorial. I'm just learning Tunisian crochet and this pattern is simple enough for me to do. I have a question. I'm getting a little bit of a bulge on the right side of my work, is that normal for this pattern? It seems to happen on the cross stitch row. My stitch count is correct on each row.

The reason Tunisian Crochet rolls is based upon the length of the loop which is pulled up and the position of the pulled through loops on the back of the work. To reduce the curling of the work with Tunisian crochet you must reduce your tension greatly when you are pulling up a loop through the vertical loop. As I work my row of pulled up loops I leave some daylight under the hook, this gives the length of the loop the room it needs to lay flat. I also make sure to pull the new loop up some what sharply causing the row of pull through two loops in the back to move down into the correct position. To ensure your loops are loose enough your Tunisian hook should slide easily through the loops on your hook, if not your tension is too tight. Notice the pulled up loops on your hook are a spiral. If your hook will not slide easily you can loosen your tension by manipulating the length of the loops by working the yarn through the spiral; which is very easy to do. You can look at the spiral of loops on your hook and quickly see which ones are too tight or too loose. The width of your work is controlled by the size of the top loop you pull through when you work your return pass. Keeping the size of the top loop you pull through consistent with the size of your hook shaft will allow you to maintain the same width throughout your project and cause the loops on the back of your work to have a consistent appearance.

    • @Ziji-LetYourSoulShine

      amazon.com
Look for 'Afghan Tunisian Bleached Bamboo Carpet Crochet Hooks' There is a set of 12 for $7.69
Hook sizes from 3mm up to 10mm in the set.
There is also another bamboo set that is not bleached, but it comes from out of country, so would take forever to arrive. Amazon has several sets of theses, but I found the bleached bamboo set got the best reviews, as far as smoothness. The others seemed to require filing of rough spots that catch on the yarn...

HEADS UP to anyone wanting to tackle this scarf during and after December 11, 2016. First, DO NOT, I repeat, do not use Red Heart Unforgettable! I absolutely do not recommend you try to make this scarf with this yarn. It is now made in variable thicknesses in the same skein and it does not work up well at all. I looked for the color used here and could not find it even online. That should have been my first clue. This video is old! I found Red Heart Unforgettable at Hobby Lobby and bought Lakehouse color. It looked like it was all one thickness from the outside of the skein. Inside, however, it had parts that were even thicker than the bulky yarns! The afghan hook that is called for in the video is a 5 or 5.5. Not even!! I'm having to use a 9 mm hook and I'm just barely keeping the stitches even. There are parts to the yarn that could be called "sock yarn. or even the thinnest of crochet thread. Invariable, when you have stitches with the bulky parts, you'll have to use the thinnest part and it pushes all the bulk to the back of your work, therefore loosing whatever texture you might have had. I'm very disappointed with the information and the scarf I'm making as a gift. It's a total BUST!

+Tomi Inglis Hi Tomi. I'm sorry you've experienced such trouble with this project. I think I can help you out.
Red Heart came out with a new addition to the Unforgettable line called "Waves". The Unforgettable Waves yarn has varying thickness just like you're describing. This is not the yarn recommended for the exact reasons you've listed. It just doesn't work.
Red Heart Unforgettable, the yarn recommended for this project, is not discontinued. It is available to purchase at most Joann Craft stores and some Walmart locations. I've seen it at Michaels too. Of course you can always order direct from Red Heart or Amazon online. If you haven't found the link to my website which links directly to where you can order the supplies as well as the other pattern infirmation, I recommend you have a look there. That's the best place to start with any of my projecs.
      www.bhookedcrochet.com/2016/09/06/knit-alike-tunisian-crochet-scarf/
Best of luck with your gift and let me know if there is anything I can do to help. My videos are intended to help you succeed, not frustrate you.

I'm at a loss as to what to do now. I've thought I could make a cowl out of what I've already got crocheted but we live in S Calif and it just doesn't get cold enough for such a dense garment. The yarn is so difficult to tear out because the fuzz on it gets tangled and there are times that it just needs to be cut to get it to turn loose. Do you have any ideas of what I could do with it? In total, I have three skeins. One hasn't been started and I have another half skein. Any help would be appreciated.

Just want to add that Lion Brand Landscapes yarn does NOT do well for this either. I just gave up after 20 rows, and I'm an old hand at this. I usually practice extreme patience and hang in there. But this time it just wasn't worth it.

I've encountered the same problem with the Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable line. The first one I bought for a different project (blue shades - can't remember the name of it) was just awful. I decided to give the brand another try when I saw this video. It's better than the first one I purchased but still has the varying thicknesses. I love the colors but still quite disappointed with the yarn. I will continue to practice tunisian crochet with this yarn but end product will probably be mine to keep and not to give away as a gift.
And yes, this yarn is readily available at Michaels and AC Moore.

Could you please tell me why I my work shrinks when I change stitches? I've been doing the basic tunisian stitch and switch to the shell stitch. When I do, I come up stitches short and my work gets narrower. I've torn the work apart and started again being very careful that I don't skip stitches but it still happens.

    • @septmornx
      @septmornx 7 лет назад +1

Ok, I switched from a size 6.0 hook to an 8.0 and it's working beautifully! Not only is my right edge looking good as far as the stitching goes but it's staying even. The scarf is also gaining length by leaps and bounds! Don't know if that will help or hinder in the end. Maybe I'll need to buy another skein but that's okay since I've read posts that the 2 called for aren't enough.
Something else that wasn't talked about in the video is the various thicknesses of the yarn used, That was causing me a lot of problems but they've gone away with the large hook! :) Good luck with your scarf.

Yes, I am. Now my work seems to be moving to the right. The right side of the work is growing. Not in the number of stitches, but it looks like I'm increasing when I reach the right side of the work and decreasing on the left! I can pull on it and straighten it out but it just looks wrong on the hook.
