+Jenn Wang...I don't think it's sexist. That's like suggesting there is something wrong with being a housewife. There is nothing wrong with being a housewife. I'm not one myself but I don't understand the issue with those who are. I don't that is derogatory. There are far worse things she could have been called in the 1940s.
This is such great footage, also what's makes it even greater for that time that she was a mom already.. What a champ! Interesting to see btw that there were no black athletes back then? Now it's the opposite.. You barely see a white runner anymore. Crazy how times have changed
+Livelifelaugh...well the best of the best are picked to represent their countries. Back then many countries with people of color were not invited to be apart of the Olympics. Who is to say if things would have been different if they were. Anyway... once more countries with people of color were invited to participate naturally it changed the type of runners you would see.
@@gavinscott10 what a selfish jealous people you are. Don't forget to quickly call "jamaica" this jamaica that. Nobody cares. Always me, me , me never giving some one else , especially White atheletes, a compliment. I have never met such a ugly people in my live.
And that considering many wanted to ban her as well. Since they considered it inappropriate for a mother to compete and believed she should stay home with her children.
No she wasn't pregnant at the time, but she already had 2 children. I come from the Netherland and although this was in 1948, the first Olympics after the war, she is still know and well loved by everyone. She is truly one of the greatest Olympic athletes. And she still holds the record of 4 gold in track and field. Not even Florence Griffith could do that. Imagine that - since 1948 this record still stands. When she came home to Amsterdam after the Olympics the city gave her a present. It was a brand new bicycle. Gosh, times have changed…..
Only olympics with commercial was in Los Angeles. Oh and i need to mention every city hosting the olympics were accumulate debt since L.A.. The more it goes less want to host it.
I read that at the time the rules dictated athletes could only compete in a maximum of 3/4 competitions. That's most likely why she couldn't compete in high jump
Seeing these 3 athletes just makes me feel good. Clean athletes, fresh as new air.
What a woman and Athlete.Still one of the biggest names ever! She will never be forgotten.
She lived on a farm with her husband and two kids. What a amazing husband she had!
without a doubt the most all round female athlete ever, holding the high- and long jump world records, too. And look at those hamstrings !! ;)
She was amazing. But I would have to say *one* of the most because … Jackie Joyner Kersee. ;)
amazing athlete.
Ranjit Baibnnnompmnn
She was the best of 1948 ánd the athlete of the Century .
Je heb gelijk.
She?

deraet maxime
No, she is pronounced as the best athlete of the century.
She was also called "The Flying Housewife" :)
an incredibly sexist name, but yes.

"The Flying Housewife." She ironically cleaned house at the games that year.
That was her nickname because she already had two kids and competed while she was 3 months pregnant of her third child. ;)

There was some 12 year old Jamaican girl who recently ran as fast the Dutchwoman ever did. Cant remember her name though

So awesome!
The record she set still stands. Not even Florence Griffith beat her!
Seriously ?
My track heroine!
And so beautiful
Great athlete, before the time all athletes had equal access to the Olympics.
And that considering many wanted to ban her as well. Since they considered it inappropriate for a mother to compete and believed she should stay home with her children.
Great footage. Wasn't she pregnant at the time? An amazing lady. Love to see her in the current days - I think she would be super dominant today, too.

Que linda!
And no comercials arround stadium , on uniforms ..... that was great time for sport - money killed sport , sad but true
there are never commercials at the olympics.
And Jim Thorpe having his medals stripped for $200!!??? Making them be amateurs was a joke.
lack of money made them live in amateurism. nostalgia is a disease...
Professional athletes killed sport

Nordic excellence in female form! A Blond Amazon doing her stuff! Bravo!
Angelo Rosario gypsy ancestry. No Nordic allows to get pregnant by a dorky guy. Crooked teeth as well.
Amazing that America couldnt even make the final in three of those events
Again Jamaica beaten by the Dutch ! 4 gold in sprinting in the Olympics.
What's the name of the background music?
Pim Ruhe The flying house wife theme.
Is it true that because of scheduling, she could not compete in the high jump & at the time she was the world record holder?!?!
I read that at the time the rules dictated athletes could only compete in a maximum of 3/4 competitions. That's most likely why she couldn't compete in high jump
MrRegskate Thanks. Good to know. The great lady was a hero of my dad’s. She would have been 100 today. Fijne Verjaardag!

There is so much more to Fanny Blankers-Koen and a Music Video with play by play doesn't do it justice....extremely disappointed in this video.
