I saw this movie as a coming attraction at a midnight showing. The next day I told my Parents they had to see it & why, it was all about a hooker but you only saw her 'remotely' naked in 1 bedroom scene, other than that, no nudity at all. Wow, what a concept.
My favorite scene in a movie ever is Julia walking down the street on her shopping trip to the song Pretty Woman and going up in that store telling off that sales lady!
YES, mine too. Julia looking radiant in that stunning [? Gucci] white dress and black hat. And every single man looked at her in that scene. This scene, and the opera scene with Violetta belting out her aria, and the first shopping scene are my favorite scenes. "I'm not really his niece. They never are, my dear."
One of the greatest “feel good” movies. So wonderful to watch the emergence of a street girl into a sophisticated and gracious elegant lady. Both Richard and Julia are outstanding in the movie.
FYI, Jason Alexander PLAYED William Stuckey….NOT the other way around. Also, Julia WAS NOT an UNKNOWN before this movie, clearly she wasn’t AS KNOWN prior to this movie. But she’d been in a movie only 9months before this one, “Steel Magnolias”, and IT was that summer’s blockbuster. With Movie Icons like Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Tom Skerritt, and Olympia Dukakis just to name a few.
The over-the-top snobbishness of Rodeo Drive is well represented in this film. Yes, they really do behave that way in many of the shops. Also, Julia has an absolutely brilliant agent. It helps.
@DivergentDroid Who needs reality? Reality can be too horrible. For the most part, but not always. I'm 81 and have had too much reality. WISHFUL THINKING GETS ME THROUGH. I LOVED THE MOVIE, AND OF COURSE IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN REALITY. A VERY PRETTY FAIRYTALE.

Julia is the reason the movie was a success. She is pretty, but it’s her personality that makes the character so love able. So many great performances in the movie from so many actors and actresses. It’s not my typical movie genre and I wasn’t a fan of Roxsette, but I will watch this movie anytime.
@Lance, totally agree. If not for Julia this movie would be just OK. She totally lifts up the movie. When she smiled or laughed in the movie, I too smiled and laughed with her. I love this movie and I watch it whenever it's on replay!
I too wore red a jacket, as . I started wearing it in 1970 while modeling Red iconic. Sorry. many gals were wearing red. - It's just that is was in the movie, that màde it prominent.
My favorite part was when they went to the restaurant and were served escargot. When Vivian shot one across the room and the Maitre d caught it with all the poise of a ML short stop .
I have two daughters, 10 years apart in ages, I cannot imagine making their Junior or Senior prom dresses (they each went to both). With all the fittings & additions to their gowns, I was exhausted! And that didn’t begin to cover nail salon & hairdresser trips. Whew! My hat is off to you. You daughter was a lucky young lady. I had a similar red jacket like the one in Pretty Woman. It took me forever to find one close to matching it. I had no idea that Molly Ringwald was first pick to play Vivian. I can’t imagine her in the role. It’s possible it has to do more w my not being a fan of hers but somehow I think the movie would’ve failed without Roberts & Gere. They brought this film to life.
Never mind how radiantly beautiful Julia was (and still is) in this movie, or how well the chemistry between she and Richard Gere was, but this reworked-into-a-romantic-comedy script was SO well done. And, it made me feel so good when Vivian got even with the bitches on commission in the store. One of the best movies of all time in my book! ❤💙! 🐰
And here’s the irony, Richard Gerry didn’t want to do the movie and said no several times until he met Julia Roberts. Their chemistry was off the charts so much so, that I find it to be a huge coincidence that shortly after the movie was finished he met and started dating Cindy Crawford (Who looks similar to Roberts) if you look at their build, height, same hair and style, both had brown eyes and both were beautiful. I think he was smitten with Julia and knew she just looked at him as a coworker/friend, so he dates someone who reminds him of her but without the acting chops and charisma Julia had. This is just imo.
I loved every minute of this show! I have always loved Julia Roberts And Richard Gere. This movie is a classic! I really hope nobody tries to remake this movie. I really can’t think of a favorite part because, the whole movie was Awesome 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love every scene in Pretty Woman. But one scene always makes me laugh out loud the most. The scene were Edward and Vivienne are out to dinner with his nemesis and his polo player son. That whole scene is hilarious. but I especially love the part where she eats the mint leaf off the mint ice cream. Her facial expression is priceless. That is my absolute favorite part. The rest of the movie is my next favorite part. LoL!! I hope no one ever tries to remake this movie.
If that is your favourite part, all I can say is that you are very easily satisfied, Personally I cant even remember that scene so it obviously did not have any impression on me and no, I wont suffer watching it again.
It's a little inaccurate to say Roberts was an unknown in Hollywood when "Pretty Woman" was made. Though it was this movie that catapulted her to leading superstar status, she had already done a handful of films including the very successful "Steel Magnolias" for which she won an Oscar nomination. Most people definitely knew her name at least.
I agree. After Steel Magnolias she was a star. She did the talk show circuit and people were dying to know what her next movie was going to be. She said it was 3000 with Richard Gere because that was the title at that time based on the money they settled on for her to spend the week as his "beck and call girl."
@@debra2700 In the past (and even still today to a lesser degree) when an actor/actress was nominated for an Oscar they were suddenly a big deal...especially if it was a newcomer who was nominated. I think just about everyone knew there was something quite unique and special about Julia Roberts when they saw her in "Steel Magnolias". There's good reason she was the only one from the whole cast that received an Oscar nomination. That's a huge achievement when you are the newcomer in the group among the likes of seasoned pros like Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Dolly Parton! To be chosen as the best from a team of people like that must be pretty flattering! Prior to "Pretty Woman" Roberts also had WON the Golden Globe for "Steel Magnolias" (an award which was much more relevant than it is today, 2nd only to the Oscars).

I went to school with Julia (Julie) at Griffin Middle in Smyrna, Ga back in 79-81..the classrooms were in pods with common areas between them and every Friday the teachers would let us perform skits for everyone. Nope, she never performed with us and mostly stayed to herself..I remember her crying a lot when she hadn't done her homework..of course, none of us ended up making $25M a movie like her, so wtf do I know...
I've ran into a few people around here that have met her out and about. Can't say that I have myself. All have had the same sentiments for her, that she is a very sweet and cool person. I'm happy to believe it to be true of her. Beautiful lady. Enjoyed her roles at the flix.

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people by an upsetting event happening in their lives that takes them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. Why are so many people across the world suddenly having their appendix removed? The appendix is associated with “being in fear for one’s life”. The HEALING phase is the rupture/inflammation.
While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes.
Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way.
It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......
The necklace wasn't a gift and was a key part of the movie. Edward asks Barnard Thompson to return it and Barnie knowing Edward would be a fool to let Vivian go, purposely opens the case and says, "It must be difficult to let go of something so beautiful" and then tells Edward that Darrell drove Vivian home so Edward can find her.
There’s no way the movie would have been as good with Molly Ringwald. Her version of Vivian would have had a more subdued/less likable personality. The big personality that Julia brought to Vivian is the most endearing part of the character.
4:15 Philip Stuckey was not playing the lawyer; Philip Stuckey was the name of the lawyer character, played by Jason Alexander who went on to co-star in Seinfeld.
When you make a masterpiece, it can’t be improved on! This movie was a masterpiece! From the script, to the actors chosen for their parts, the fabulous clothes, the scene locations, the music, all were perfection! When I saw it at the theater, I became aware of a woman sitting behind me who’d seen it several times before and was narrating it to her friend to prepare her for the best lines. But it was OK because I didn’t miss anything. I loved everything about the movie.
What you see as a masterpiece I view as the most vile and pornographic movie ever made. Streetwalkers are invariably abused and traumatized children. Thy are recruited by pimps and pimpettes when they are exhausted, hungry, and homeless. They are turned out to work their daily quota and are of course raped, beaten, drugged and frequently murdured. Very few meet billionaires on the “stroll” and live happily ever after in mansions. A pauper’s grave is more likely assuming their bodies are found. The cast, crew, producers and directors should live in perpetual shame for making a movie promoting prostitution as a viable lifestyle and enjoyable entertainment trope. Whatever you were paid it wasn’t worth your soul. Perhaps you would prefer to live a personal hell-on-earth. A police officer will knock at your door and drive you to a morgue where you can identify the dead child as your own before the forensic autopsy begins. Should people be offended by my comments, please feel free to argue/ debate my post. Just be aware that I spent 47 years in the Child Protection profession. Thousands of interviews with sex-trade workers and not one happy ending to report.
@@garypaquin9571 thank you for giving me a sobering thought. At one time I had let your point of view come to my head but I justified the plot by thinking that Vivian and Kit were their own pimps, therefore I wanted to believe they were relatively safe. I since have grown to see that any sex work is always not a good option.
Wow!Thank you for these unknown trivias about the movie & the cast esp Julia & Richard Gere. What a blockbuster movie. After 31 yrs Julia is still lovely & a very good actress. I watched her in Erin w/c won her as Best Actress in the Oscars. I hope Julia & Richard will make a reunion movie. July 3,2021
I always thought the box was actually a blooper, but I guess it was a joke on Julia, however; it was a RUBY necklace with diamonds. Three different endings were filmed I believe. The actual ending wasn't chosen till right before release. Some versions of the film cut some of the shopping scenes with Gere. Personally, I've never cared for Molly Ringwald.
Having Molly Ringwald star in Pretty Woman instead of Julia Roberts would’ve been like having Shirley Temple star in the Wizard of Oz instead of Judy Garland.
That’s because our mind is already conditioned to only see Julia Roberts in it. If it had never had happened with Julia, your mind would see it differently. It’s just the way we’re programmed see and accept certain things.
@@val13c59 no, it's called bad casting. Judy made us love Dorothy, and Julia made us love Vivienne. Shirley would have been a child, and had so much cutsey confidence from her career starting at an early age. udy being pudgy and vulnerable was what made us love her. Molly was always cold and distant, so can't see her as a femme fatale, and her career stalled. Julie has a quality that with her smile, she makes us love her, no matter what character she is playing. It isn't mind games, it's chemistry.
Just an FYI in case no one else has mentioned it… The actors name was not Philip Stuckey, the characters name was Philip Stuckey, and he was played by Jason Alexander 👍
Richard Gere is also a guitarist and has a large guitar collection. and Julia Roberts also has a brother who is also an actor. Eric Roberts. but the two of them are sort of a stranged and don't communicate with each other very much. and Lotus had to send a person along with the car to give Richard Gere tips on how to drive the car. because like most exotic cars they are not particularly easy to drive. for someone who hasn't driven them before. and Roy Orbison records for the song "Pretty Woman". received a boost in royalties from the movie. even though it was already a very huge hit, with record sales in the millions.
If you think Gere is gorgeous, watch "American Gigolo"... wholly cow (spoiler alert: full-frontal nudity). That's the movie in which I went gaga over him. He was also in "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" but I didn't really pay much attention because I didn't like the movie.
I really don’t think another actress would have brought the same style to the film. Julia was so tired the day of the necklace shooting and Gary told Geere to slam the box on Julia’s fingers because he wanted a true response and he got it and they kept it in. I love the Red dress.
I love this movie and have watched it more times than I can count. It's one of those movies that you can pick up in any part and be excited and watch the rest. It has so many favorite parts you are sure to enjoy it. But Molly Ringwald as Viviane??? That would have been tragic... Julia Roberts and Richard Gere were perfect together and made a magical movie.
Nobody smiles, laughs or cries like Julia Roberts. I think she is utterly irreplaceable in every role I have ever seen her play, and to substitute any other actress in one of her parts would be to diminish the picture (with the possible exception of Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web, as I think maybe Cate Blanchett could have pulled that one off).
Actually kind of nice to have the lid slammed shut scene confirmed for me. I said right off that wasn’t faked. She didn’t know he was going to do that. Thanks!
At that time in the film Julia & Kiefer broke up. She was doing her best during the shoot, but Richard thought he’d help her along with the trick of snapping the jewelry box on her fingers. It fixed the day.
Richard Gere was phoning it in. He didn’t respect Roberts’s acting talent. Later, in that Peter Pan film with Robin Williams, Julia Roberts was phoning it in.
I will always be connected to this movie. I was at the hospital with my mother-in-law where she was at her last day before she died and this movie was on in her room.
The narrator states that the lawyer was played by actor Philip Stuckey. That was the character’s name. The actor was Jason Alexander - who played George Costanza on Seinfeld.
although Pretty Woman is a great 'feel good' movie, Notting Hill is a true modern-day fairy tale. From meeting and falling in love with a Hollywood movie star, to telling them, " as fantastic as this looks, I fear that my heart (and soul) would be devastated if you left me again.. " has to be one of the most genuine lines that everyone can relate to..
Molly Ringwold would have been fine in this movie. Of course, it would have been different than Robert's. Better or worse? No. Just different. She would have done fine in the role and made the movie fun to watch as well.

To wax nostalgic for a 32 year old film in 1990 would be to reminisce about a film from 1958.
Somehow '90 feels closer to the present than '90 to '58.
It's better than the alternative.
Thirty Two Years? WOW.
Loved Hector Elizondos protective character too. Vivian needed an ally.
The over-the-top snobbishness of Rodeo Drive is well represented in this film. Yes, they really do behave that way in many of the shops. Also, Julia has an absolutely brilliant agent. It helps.
Do you realize you cannot tell reality from movies?
They are probably tired of tourists going into the stores and not buying expensive things.

Steel Magnolias made Julis famous & she did some incredible acting in it!

I loved this movie.
My daughters senior prom was that year and, I made her red prom dress . It turned out drop dead gorgeous.

It does make me laugh out loud picture in Molly ringwald and Richard gear lol.

And the red hair. Fabulous!
She is fabulous and beautiful

The necklace wasn't a gift and was a key part of the movie. Edward asks Barnard Thompson to return it and Barnie knowing Edward would be a fool to let Vivian go, purposely opens the case and says, "It must be difficult to let go of something so beautiful" and then tells Edward that Darrell drove Vivian home so Edward can find her.
Yeah. Thought it a bit weird they got this wrong like that!
At the end of the day, we're all human, prone to mistakes. 😊
There’s no way the movie would have been as good with Molly Ringwald. Her version of Vivian would have had a more subdued/less likable personality. The big personality that Julia brought to Vivian is the most endearing part of the character.

Still one of my favorites. I need to watch again as it has been ages since I have seen it. .
Gary Paqui💯💯💯
@@garypaquin9571 thank you for giving me a sobering thought.
