- Russell Moore and Beth Moore are often mistaken for siblings, spouses, or even parent and child in social media discussions. While they share no familial relation, Russell and Beth have shared similar joys and heartbreaks in their Christian lives. They both know the beauty of growing up in churches that loved them well. They’ve experienced the privileges and complexities of living as public faith leaders. And, more recently, they’ve both walked through the process of leaving the Southern Baptist Convention-a place they’d called home for decades.
In this episode, Russell and Beth talk about how both staying and leaving can be tremendously difficult and tremendously sweet. They share honestly about how painful and disorienting it can be when the people in your inner circles suddenly seem to turn against you. They discuss how their experiences may seem unique, but in many ways, they mirror relationship losses that Americans and people all around the globe have passed over the past several years. In 2016 I was disappointed in so many Christians I had respected for years because they could not see Trump for who he really is, both Christians in my local church and leadership of the American evangelical church. Now 7 years later with all of the things he has done I am amazed they still can't see through him. So glad people like Russell Moore and Beth Moore stuck to their convictions.
Beth says that the church was her safe place as a child. For me too. That's why the rise of Christian nationalism and Trumpism has crushed me. I had to leave Evangelicalism. I am an Episcopalian now and love my new family. But, I will always long for my childhood church. I'm an evangelical ex-pat like many others these days. I am tearful as I write this.

All of you failed to hear anything that drew you out of your comfort zone. You ignored years of the church evolving into a nightclub and when men needed the structure and sound doctrine so missing from the church you all chose to ignore us. As Christ said, I came to separate families. I guess it is what it's supposed to be.

If she is referring to the Access Hollywood tape, if you "rewind" it had to do with consensual. Trump gigantic support among Christians, close to 90%, has always been because the other option represents a fight for more abortion vs. fewer abortion (murders). Sorry, that 100%, based on logic, not emotion, changes the argument. Beth to way, way off base. Having watched her, I can see on a host of things why she is so criticized by fellow born-again believers in Christ, who will spend eternity in heaven loving Jesus on earth as they will there.
Both are violations of God's law and punishable by the just and righteous God.

I am so thankful for Beth Moore, a”voice crying in the wilderness”. The wilderness is the place where church leaders have overlooked sin for political position. My faith in Jesus has been strengthened by your courage in representing His love with integrity.

I'm 81 and, like you, loved growing up Southern Baptist. It breaks my heart that what was once my safe place has become a dangerous place for me. I am comforted by my long-time-ago college church in Waco, Texas, which I attend virtually. They are still preaching and living the gospel of love. Thank you for your courage.
I’m admirer of both these two. They suffered significantly for taking a stand on their beliefs. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness!

Many in the church are heart broken over the evangelical apostasy associated with those who idolized Donald Trump. We are so grateful for your witness and willingness to suffer persecution by those who expressed a greater loyalty to Donald Trump than to the Truth (Jesus). Please stay faithful to Jesus in the public way that the Lord has called you to. Many see the truth but are afraid to admit the truth about Donald Trump because they fear persecution by the church and their communities. Love you both.

I respect Beth Moore's ideas and thoughts especially when she discusses the role of how both genders need to work together. I grew up as a conservative Southern Baptist, but the older I get I realize there is more to life than those ideas. The kingdom is much larger than anyone can understand with roles, opportunities, and harvest is plentiful.
She's A FALSE TEACHER. Any inner one respects her needs to read the bible. Everything about her is FALSE.

Part of the reason the disagreements and talk behind your back in the name of ‘we need to pray for her’ kind of way is because it happens with the people you love the most,so you wonder what is wrong with me.Have I lost my mind? So Beth I must say I have learned more from your bible study than from my own Church that I love. You made me understand that the apostle’s were just as screwed up as I was before they met Jesus. It became personal. I can never thank you enough. When I learned how you felt about what was going on in the world it gave me such a huge amount of comfort. It is obvious to me that Jesus is with you , speaks through you and lives within you. You still totally light up the world, and are a comforting leader. Again thank you.
So, because the apostles were human, you think scripture doesn’t matter? Scripture is very clear, women are not to be pastors, or teach men. By the way, we are seeing a lot of apostle, these days. I’ve been to too many churches. I saw that Christians were hurt and let down by ministry of another gospel within the church. It took years for me to understand what was happening. Stay the course, don’t give up. Stay following Jesus even if it means going to it alone. Pray and trust God to lead you. He will because He said He would!

Me too. A man gave me one of her books in 2007 (never heard of her). That book sat on my shelf for 7 more years until I picked it up and read it (2014) (still never heard of the author). God used her book (Breaking Free) to change my life. Very thankful for Beth Moore regardless of the people who constantly nit pick her Bible Doctrine. Clearly she loves the Lord Jesus.

Was so glad to hear Beth mention the incredible support she got from her 30-year pastor John Bisagno at 1st Baptist, Houston. He came to visit our little country church in the early 2000’s. Such a heart to see others excited to come to Christ & be brought up in the faith. In other words, “making the main things the main things”.
So hopeful with Beth saying she is hopeful that the Lord will pull something beautiful out of all of these ashes.
It won't be through her or you. Many of us were desperate for sound doctrine we can get behind. Number 1 demographic that's steadily left the church the last decade has been men. You all chose to vvar against the men in your lives.
I can still hear your pain and feel it. I only know 50% and even in my state I saw it 1st. Then all the rest oh my. I havent been to a convention ever thank God.. I read this past years.. I know there are many Christians that are Southern Baptist. So hard to decide to leave knowing the scandle it would cause but there are too many lost people and God called you both and many of us to tell the truth of Jesus.. We have to obey Him. Those that are lost need to see and know that there are Christians that do know the truth!
My Gospel isn’t the “ Make America Great Again” one. I ‘ ve serve 30 years overseas to share the Good News. My heart aches seeing how we allowed a “ man” divided us! We the church have to hear the voice of Holy Spirit. Jesus taught his disciples to pray “ Father in Heaven… your Kingdom come …” God’s Kingdom is beyond America! We need to focus in God s calling to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 “ A blessing to all the people of the earth.” This is our calling… to bless every nation with the Good News!

I feel like I am alone in my faith also. I have asked myself, like Russell Moore, am I the one that's crazy? I am sitting with my hands clinched listening to things from my fellow church members that make me want to cry. Most of the time it is major misinformation they are repeating. I have been praying for this fever to break but i don't see that happing anytime soon.
A huge concern for loved ones that I love. I felt like there was a huge grey fog over too many friends and family. I couldnt break thru it.. My dad did finally understand.

And the truth is, in scripture! Paul have instructions to Timothy, and women can not be pastors, nor teach men. It isn’t about power, but order. Adam was formed first. Adam was not deceived, Eve was. There are lots of very important things, for women, in the church. Being pastor is not one of them.

This is such a great interview. I appreciate the courage of Russell Moore and Beth Moore talking about the abuses that need to be brought to the light. It’s encouraging to see them take the fire and step out.
Why did Russell Moore sit on information he claims to have for 11 months? It’s been a year and a half and Moore STILL has not provided attorneys with the information he claims to have. Failure to report is a crime. He is only accusing people on the Executive Committee of abuse but he refuses to be specific about the alleged abuser or the abused. Russell Moore needs to put up or shut up,

I have wanted to email each of you with my deep gratitude and my promise to pray without ceasing for you and your families. Truth is truth. Thanks for naming it, and pointing to the One who is Truth. I am so grateful for this interview. I have had grief and concern for a year and a half over the issues of seeing a mocker's spirit and even openly misogynistic attitudes from so many very important Christian leaders towards Beth. I have also been deeply concerned for baby believers I know who are confused and badly alienated over the hypocrisy and dismissiveness of serious sexual abuse issues from conservative Churchianity in 2020 interactions. Thank you for speaking out together to bring us up to date on how you are affected by these matters.

Donald Trump was found out to have said “grab a woman by her ----“ and most everyone brushed it off. Beth couldn’t, because she has been sexually abused and fights for women. So, she started speaking out against Trump and Christians began to dislike her….

Russell Moore I was sexually assaulted when i was in high school, you left the SBC and claimed many abusers still exist why aren’t you calling them out by name and uncovering the corruption? This is disturbing and disgusting why are you covering for them ?
The SBC Executive Committee is in the process of pursuing a more in-depth sexual abuse investigation. And it looks like Russell Moore was instrumental in bringing this much needed situation to light. As has Beth Moore as well.
As a Christian counselor I have grown to better understand that it’s important for adult survivors of abuse to have the choice of when and how or whether to tell their stories.
And it’s important for well meaning leaders not just to swoop in and take over these situations….. which could come across as parental.
Think of all the people who have called out Ravi Z for his now confirmed sexual abuse and exploitation of women working in spas he co-owned … and yet even after all the details of a thorough investigation, some people continue to defend Ravi and deny his wrongdoing.
Especially with Christian abuse survivor and attorney Rachel Denhollander working on this committee, I’m hopeful this investigation will get more thorough attention.
Now is your chance to expose your abuser by name! Tell us which church they attended and their name. The SBC has no control over the independent Baptist Churches that make up the SBC. Have you reported the abuse to the church you attended where the abuse actually occurred? There may be others who were abused by the same person. The SBC has nothing to do with what happened to you as a member of a local church.

Dawn, The Executive Committee is nothing more than a funding body. They funnel money through the Cooperative Program to various mission efforts of the SBC. That’s basically it. These are actual crimes that are being alleged. A criminal investigation needs to happen here. So what do you have after nearly $2 MILLION being spent on this? Zip. Not their fault. They are not investigators but they have been tasked with a job they don’t have the skills or legal authority to undertake. If Russell Moore cared at all he would have immediately reported these alleged crimes to law enforcement. What did he do - for nearly a YEAR? NOTHING. If any of these alleged crimes actually happened Russell Moore should join these sex offenders in jail.
If he makes those accusations, he has to name names. Period. He's as guilty as they are if he does not. He's a false teacher and a political operative.
Not many women in leadership have been accused ot sexual abuse.Patriarchal attitudes are not good. Sexism is not good...

Question? For years whenever I heard the story of Jim Elliot and the other 4 missionaries killed by the Waodani people that they were so ashamed of killing these men who only wanted to do good for them that they accepted Christ. Only recently have I heard about Rachel Saint who was the sister of Nate Saint that died beside Jim Elliot. Rachel went to live with the Waodani to share the gospel and translate the Bible into their language. Perhaps even develop their written language herself. This tribe which once was considered to be one of most violent peoples of the earth are now peaceful and 40% Christian. Are you saying she was wrong to teach the gospel? And to men?
God was in this, another woman Dayuma escaped the tribe 3 years before because she felt her life was in danger as others in her family had been murdered within the tribe. Rachel was introduced to Dayuma and had been studying their language for 3 years before her brother and the others were killed.

I enjoyed the discussion. Many of the questions were about her or RM’s views, experience, and handling of criticism. It would be odd if they didn’t talk about themselves given the questions and theme of discussion. I love Beth and am still doing her Bible Studies. The main issue that really hurt me personally was what she said in that huge article rant about trump is that she said Christians are worshiping Trump instead of Christ. That was offensive. To say we couldn’t support the candidate we want is worship is ridiculous! Furthermore that we were too deceived to know that. That told me she doesn’t know people like me. Jesus First! That article had many more offenses.

Hello Mr. Moore, I just found this first taping of your show by the grace of God. I found a video production which you spoke on, and liked what you had to say. I will find it and put it in the reply. I have been praying for Godly leaders who are in touch with the truth for a long time. As you know, so many brothers and sisters in the faith have turned away to what I would consider fables, as prophesied in the Bible. I had heard a tweet from Beth Moore that was incredible on track which said something like "this is a seductive spirit, please turn away from it. But I could not find anything else from her pertaining to politics. I just found that you are connected with Christianity Today. As I have also been praying for leadership for myself as a writer, I will begin to follow this publication. I should also mention, I have had the experience of being a lady in the Baptist church, and similar churches for over 30 years. It is very difficult to be one who has not been directed by God to be a mother and/or wife, and feel ostracized, demoralized, etc. for this reason. I understand and appreciate all that Beth has said above. Thank you for this. I hope I can follow you on youtube as I have not become accustomed to using podcasts yet. God bless you!

Thank God and thank you two. I am praying for God to also expose and convict concerning racism in American evangelical churches. We have to stop worshipping (idolatry) our "godly" forefathers of whom many were involved in the brutal rapes, murders and horrific treatment of enslaved Africans. Also, many don't understand that when they proclaim to want to "make America great again", it is also referring to a time when black people were majorly oppressed and abused. Being an American citizen has to stop taking precedence over being a KINGDOM citizen.

Kimberly, I agree! 💯 I didn’t hear Beth mention how upset she was with Biden who also has been accused of sexually abusing a woman, so apparently that didn’t bother her? Her silence on that speaks loudly, as does her hypocrisy. My respect for her dropped considerably when I heard she voted for Crooked H. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if we had had a Christ-believing, morally sound person to vote for on the presidential ticket, in the past 2 elections? But we didn’t. I realize that Trump is extremely crass, and his personality is off-putting to some, incl myself, but we weren’t voting for a Sunday school teacher. We voted for someone to lead our country. And what Trump did for America in regards to bringing back jobs, the unemployment, securing the southern border, trade, standing up to our foreign adversaries, being energy independent, etc was really quite impressive, and can’t be honestly disputed. And comparing it to where we’re at now…..it’s just a shame. 😞
