when I was younger I absolutely LOVED maya and josh but rewatching it even as an older teen made me feel so gross and weird. It was cute for me when I was maya's age in the show but when I became josh's age and watched it it gave me the creeps, especially when he said that he reciprocated her feelings. it kind of undid the whole 'you're too young for me and i don't feel that way for you because our brains are at different developmental stages right now and i see you as a child' narrative and made it into 'the only thing stopping me is the law so let's get together when we're both legal' which is so.....ugh. also yeah, three years isn't a big age gap as adults but they did NOT do enough to emphasize that by making them have chemistry. it could have been a great lesson for how both young girls and their older objects of affection should react in this kind of (very common) situation but instead they made it like actually romantic.

She did alot of masking too that's why I related to her so much. At least to me she looked like she was about to crack trying to figure out what and how other people were feeling by reading their body language ( I am terrible at it). Those were just some things I saw but it probably isnt significant.

Maya would’ve been a much more interesting main character. If they weren’t on Disney Channel, they really could’ve dug in deep on Maya’s trauma from her father leaving, and what it’s like to grow up living with a mom who’s making at most minimum wage.
Yes because Riley is not that interesting at all she was just sad or over excited and it got annoying while maya had trauma to grow into her self and I wish she was the main character but Disney always wants the main character to be the peppy girl all the time
honestly Boy Meets World was the same way. Shawn would’ve been an amazing main character instead of Cory and they could’ve done the same things with him (instead of just showing him running away and Cory coming to the rescue)
Luke Nance the issue is that Cory is also relatable. They both were ab,e to show different sides of the world and how they were able to grow and function from being in each other’s lives. We don’t get to see how Riley grows from Maya being part of her life, and although they sometimes show how positive Riley was with maya, they then turned it into a bad thing
The fact that Angela who is now married (for four years) came to NY just to see Shawn in order to get his advice on whether or not she'd be a good mother to her future children made 0 sense. Story wise, I get that they did it just to push Shawn away from his "one love" to move to Maya's mother but they didn't have to steamroll the Angela/Shawn relationship for the original series to do so...
the fact that they even tried to push him onto maya's mother is the worse thing that reboot could've ever done, he had no chemistry with her mom whatsoever.
It was gross. They know they messed up by splitting up Shawn and Angela then tried to justify it or make it seem okay because Angela's happily married. Also, it's so condescending that she would need to ask her ex if she's ready to be a mom.

The whole thing of Maya becoming Riley to see if Lucas was right for her best friend never made sense. Maya was rooting for Riley and Lucas since the 1st episode. There was no need for her to become Riley.
Maya and Riley’s “friendship” is SO toxic, the only reason it seemed like it worked is because Maya is really insecure mostly because of her major lack of a stable familial support and therefore afraid to talk back to riley and ruin years of “friendship” and the only kind of support she really had mostly and Riley is a total entitled brat that abused the power she had over maya(albeit ignorantly)

Maya needs her character analyzed by a psychologist. She only liked josh because he was older and a sort of father figure, and got mad when he broke the rules and went out partying. She only loved him when he was around and forgot he existed when he wasn’t, like her father. She forced herself to fall into the “bad girl next door” trope because that’s what people expected of her, and we can tell that wasn’t really her when she refused to simply vandalize a little statue, or when somebody criticizes her style and she changed and never went back. She only liked Lucas because Riley did and she needed to grasp onto Riley, the normal all American teenage girl that she desperately wanted to be seen as. She didn’t think she was like family to Riley because they were close, she thought they were like family because all she had known was toxicity and Riley was a very toxic person. She adopted anybody willing to be her friend and took them right under her wing and was a huge pushover and people pleaser.

I really disliked how the writers and characters treated Riley’s character. I never really liked her, but the whole idea that she had to constantly be happy and was never really allowed to be sad. It was just so off putting like her friends kept things from her about the real world in order to keep her bubbly, but it wasn’t for her benefit it was only for theirs. Maya and Riley’s relationship was just so toxic and unhealthy and it went both ways. We all always analyze maya and her story and trauma, but there is always just something that didn’t sit well with me about how Riley’s parents treated her, it’s been a long time since I’ve watched it to be able to pin point a specific scene, idk it was iffy. But anyways I always thought that lowkey Riley was really depressed or like semi mentally unstable like there was definitely something going on there I wished they would have developed it more but then again it is Disney
On a deeper look I imagined Riley being one of those people who pretended to be happy on the outside, because that’s what people expected of her but was honestly really sad inside.

I've never even seen this show I just like to listen to commentary on pop culture even the parts I'm unfamiliar with, but that is exactly what a lot of my friends did with me over the years. I still can't shake off my sunny disposition most of the time even when I'm really depressed because it's just such a force of habit, and to this day I even have complete strangers hesitate to tell me certain things about the world or their experiences because they don't want to "destroy my innocence" or assume I "can't handle it", and then when they do tell me they're surprised that I am already familiar to harsh things like that or that I don't react super emotionally to it, because I have in fact seen and heard of a lot of terrible things before. Just because I seem all "innocent" doesn't mean that I am only that way all of the time. This comment section hit the nail on the head though as to why that sort of thing always bothered me even though I couldn't quite put it into words. It's something a lot of people do for their own benefit not mine, not to mention it also feels really infantalizing. And yes I was also set up to fail to become a victim of all sorts of abuse later on in the name of "protecting my innocence" and I still struggle with feeling like I will have no friends if I don't play the part of the always happy, bubbly girl. So much of my life just got explained by a comment section on youtube and it's blowing my mind.

@Anime Fan 607 Rocky was like Riley. Cece was like Maya. Flynn was like Auggie. Cece's mom and that guy she was going to marry were like Shawn and Katie except they didn't get married. Ty was kind of like Lucas except much more cool and suave. Farkle and Smakle were kind of Gunther and Tinka except much more bland and not siblings. Shake It Up was a fun show. Girl Meets World was not.
I was watching iCarly and was like, wait a second, this is a bit like GMW. It’s like the main girl and her best friend with a darkish past and a guy who they both date. Riley is a way worse and more annoying version of Carly. Maya is a good character, but I have to saw Sam was funnier. Lucas will never be as likable as Freddie and is the most bland and boring love interest. Freddie has substance.
Maya was literally growing. She learned to forgive herself in Girl Meets the Forgiveness Project, she dressed differently because Shawn cared enough to tell her he didn’t like how she dressed, and she kind of started to like learning when Harper was introduced. But Disney straight up said Naaaah Maya can’t grow! She’s Maya Hart. & they literally stripped her of everything and turned her back to season one Maya.
But was it Disney or was it possible due to the writers suddenly realizing that if Maya grew she might not just wind up outshining Riley (because she was nicer and smarter than she let others think while Riley wanted others to think she was nice and smarter than she actually was) but might decide that Riley's NOT all that and tone things down if not quit hanging with her altogether (and where would Riley be without her biggest worshipper)?
The only thing I liked about Shawn and Katy was Shawn adopted Maya. Shawn and Maya’s arc was super compelling. And Katie was actually a kind of interesting character but there were barely any episodes with Shawn and Katie together and then all of a sudden they got married.
Maya and Shawn stopped being compelling when they forced Shawn to be mayas father. They didn't need to happen. He could have been a Mr. Turner or even what Cory's father was to shawn. They had a good relationship and even though it would have been cool to see turner adopt shawn, it didn't take away from their relationship. But with maya and shawn it seemed like the only point was to have shawn adopt maya and not to build this attachment

I am surprised they had a coming of age about a female character and periods are not mention once. I was rewatching the series and came across that episode about religious beliefs. It came to the part where Farkle was talking about how he didn’t believe in God, and he was like, being reasonable about it. And then Cory started pushing his beliefs on Farkle? Maybe i’m over exaggerating, but if someone is atheist those are their beliefs and you shouldn’t try and convince them God exists or not, because those are THEIR BELIEFS.

Speaking of interracial couples do y’all notice how zendaya was by racial but the roles she played never reflected on what her actually family looks like. Like I’m all for black love but y’all got a biracial light skin half black girl, she could have had a biracial family for her in KC undercover and shake it up because you know there are lots of little girls that could have been like oh that’s what my family looks like and she looks like me but no. At the end of the day, I say this as a full black teen young woman, Disney not only should have more diversity in terms of black people but as far as biracial people too. The only new or recent Disney show I can think of that has a biracial kid is that new show Sydney to the max which of course it does kills off her mother(she passed away in the show) and lives with her white father and grandmother and is almost not in touch with the African American side of her self because instead of Disney trying to represent interracial couples with biracial kids they instead say you know we don’t want black people in the show and the girl is half black it’s a win win let the storyline be that her black mother is dead. Disney needs to represent more POC and biracial kids in there shows at this point there really is no excuse for why there Disney shows are hella vanilla. Oh and don’t get me started on ravens home the only black family on disney right now that is literally an embarrassment but y’all not ready for that convo yet.

Funny you mention Billy from Girl Meets World because it kind of mirrors the black guy in Austin and Ally who dated Trish just to be a background dancer for Austin then the only other episode you see him in, he got famous because he stole Ally’s music and the music video concept that got Austin famous but we never see him after that and never showed growth for him either. Disney seemed to have an issue with allowing character growth for some side black characters 🤔
I dislike the fact that Shawn & Angela's relationship was just... kissing. They could have had so much more. But in boy meets world I like that Angela wasn't a black girl stereotype and that she was representation for darker skinned black girls,she should have had more screen time

True, still the dumbest explanation I’ve heard to date of why someone’s developed a crush lol. It was also weird how in bmw they had Eric discourage Topanga’s crush on him and the audience was all nervous laughter but in gmw they romanticized it and had the audience swoon. Like ew, but also why change what was already correct? The older person should discourage the younger person’s crush on them and definitely not entertain it one bit.
How about that episode when these two “baddies” from mayas neighborhood show up and expect her to vandalize with them in front of Riley like she had some big bad dark past but..... Now that I have a safe space. Lemme air out my gripes with this mess of a show. -riley was AWFUL. She became this sheltered airhead narcissist that ate Zay's cookie and I shall NEVER FORGIVE -they made complete caricatures out of the already caricatured duo Cory/topanga. The humanization of those two went out the door. -Lucas was bland. Zay was better and I'm MAD THEY TEASED HIM AND MAYA - that Josh/maya situation where this dude told her "I like you, but like imma still do my thing. But imma find you when I'm ready" GARBAGE! -they painted maya to be rebellious, but like... how? Her and riley been together since 1st/2nd grade
shadow studios Maya was likable but she downright annoyed me because she basically got away with things no one else could. That time she got an A should not have been celebrated with Topanga but Maya’s own mom. Her crush on Josh was a bit creepy. She should have have developed into realizing her mom works hard for her. She didn’t need a daddy and she got everything she wanted! Her problems were solved way too campy and her story lines derailed Riley’s relationships and Shawn and Angela. Not her fault but she wasn’t my favorite
Cory and Topanga’s relationship triggered me. It felt so unrealistic and so forced sometimes. It just didn’t seem practical and I always felt like it shows a bad message. But I was fine with that after a certain point. But my very last straw was when they split up Shawn and Angela. And then the way that they wrote her in in Girl Meets World sent me into s rage.
And everyone pretended as though Cory and Topanga STILL had THE perfect relationship. Would anyone have thought so if Cory seemed constantly annoyed with Topanga and had made fun of her salary insecurity, brains,etc. in front of their friends and children? Or,for that matter, didn't consider what HER POV would be when thinking of moving the family abroad? Seriously, someone on the show should have told them to get counseling to see if they could salvage their dysfunctional union or call it a day!
I swear Maya had more chemistry (both platonic and romantic) with the other characters than Riley did with anyone-- And Riley fitting the quirky-manic pixie dream girl- main character trope just maid her seemed so self involved.

I don’t think any of them (besides Farkle) were that good of friends tbh. Riley was dramatic and made everything about her and would constantly talk badly about Maya’s life, and wanted Maya to be some rebellious girl with no development. And Maya would coddled Riley and wouldn’t call her out or give her the opportunity to grow as a person and wanted her to stay naive to the world because she uses Riley’s positivity as her safe place despite Riley’s many real negative emotions like feeling insecure.
i rewatched some episodes of girl meets world a while ago and the one where they thought farkle had aspergers was one of them, and i really couldn't shake how off it made me feel. when his parents first announced that they thought he had it, riley and maya were like "no no no you don't, you're just farkle" and it really left a bad taste in my mouth when they said that. i didn't understand why it would've been such a bad thing if farkle did have it, and, it would've added something that him and smackle had together and could talk about it.

Well you know it isn't technically Riley's fault they wrote her that way. There was a lot of potential to develop her character as it's pretty obvious she feels the obsessive need to look or be happy even when she isn't.

Where they messed up with Lukas is that unlike cory and topanga, Lukas was literally just there to be a love interest, where as topanga was her own character who ended up becoming the love interest.
There was always something about Maya’s character that seemed so off to me because of how awful she was to people a lot of the time. But looking back on it now, when I’m older, I realize it’s because the show never went into the causes of her behavior in depth and why she acted the way she did. She could’ve been such an interesting main character to watch grow and learn but they didn’t give her the chance to and that feels wrong :(
I know I'm going to get bashed at this but I didn't like Maya or riley riley annoyed me and Maya just didn't sit right with me either.... my fave character was farkle I loved the way his personality was I found him cute and adorable
I hated the whole Riley Committee thing. Maya (and the others) wanted to keep Riley innocent and naïve and this ball of sunshine because that was her escape from the world, and that was really selfish. She kept her from growing, and set her up to fail and most likely be a victim of some type of violent crime. There was so much potential for both characters, but that one plot point just destroyed it all. Like, if there was no Riley Committee, Riley would get to grow up and mature and just understand things better and all that, and Maya wouldn't be setting her best friend up to fail. Also, get rid of the triangle. That was just bullshit and ruined so many friendships. If you're gonna have a triangle, don't have it be between 3 main characters. Have a character involved who's just recurring. But honestly, triangles are the worst...

Yes, the language was so weird! I was looking for a comment that talked about this. Some episodes I had no idea what the issue even WAS. The bully episode for example was so confusing to me. For most of it I wasn't even sure why Riley was upset, and did we actually ever see the bully? It was like a metaphor?? What the fuck??? They would talk in scriptures or something, it was so odd. Did Boy Meets World have this problem too? It seems like a much better show, but I unfortunately don't know much about it to say for certain.
I haven't seen the entire show, but from clips, as well as at least a couple of full episodes I have seen, I know the writing was *beyond horrid*. Almost no one makes sense. I agree about the bully thing. I didn't understand that at all!! Like, was Riley saying Maya was a bully? Was there a real bully Riley had, but we never got to see them? What kind of teenagers talk in the most strange and cryptic manner?? Half of the time Maya and Riley spend together, they are fighting about something it seems.
On an edit of Maya Hart I found on here, there was a comment that stood out to me. "Maya never went to Rileytown, she just planted some flowers in Mayaville." Maya in season 3 proceeded towards character development. Upon that main character syndrome Riley suffers from, she spirals in a fit of envy of whatever good comes to Maya. Her best friend - she actually feels threatened that her best friend is doing good in school, gravitating to a world of glory. She was in a better place. Confused because of the triangle, however she did good, striving for better grades, and like many teenagers at that age, she is struggling with direction. But she is trying! Riley is _the_ worst friend for trying to reverse that development. In the pilot episode, now, wasn't that the premise of this whole damn show? About Riley keeping Maya out of trouble? I also completely agree with you about diversity. Trina McGee deserved a better light in the revival. The writers littered her underneath the rug. More storylines - I would of loved to see a Maya and Angela relationship. There was potential. Yet it was so wasted. Zay, Maya, and Farkle were the best damn opportunities for the show. Disney lusts after the bland main characters getting happy ass endings.
I always think about that one episode where they were going to some heritage fair, had a whole long thing for each character about where they came from, I think farkle realized he watch Dutch or something, and they COMPLETELY ignored Zay and only Zay. an incredibly missed opportunity to teach kids a little bit about black culture.
Farkle learned his great-grandfather was actually a survivor of the Holocaust and Say was like 'I'm from Africa'. So Haiti and St Kitts straight up don't exist? And he literally just said 'Africa'. That's a continent, not a country. He could have said Egypt or Nigeria or South Africa, but nope. Way to generalize a bunch of countries, Disney.
I remember this show trying to be so deep and relatable when it really wasn't any of those things... It was so dramatic and stupid sometimes for no reason, just to show a lesson in a really unrealistic way.
I feel like Lucas should have been with Smackle instead. They had an interesting dynamic (unlike Rucas who had such a BORING relationship) but the dynamic wasn’t toxic or filled with negativity (unlike Lucaya with Maya constantly picking on Lucas). Smackle would have made Lucas a lil bit more interesting and Lucas could have helped Smackle be a lil bit more chilled and who she wants to be. And when Smackle made her jokes about him liking her, he would laugh everytime (which is different from Maya because he would take it seriously sometimes). And it would’ve been a real plot twist too cuz ain’t nobody was taking her that seriously when she kept making them jokes
AJ sometimes he was tolerant of it and other times he genuinely didn’t like it, so I feel she should’ve stopped. Lucas laughed everytime Smackle pretended he was flirting with her and would sometimes go along with it (and the stuff Smackle said were actually funny and harmless too, Maya sometimes was just being mean to him so of course he wouldn’t be alright with it)
I always thought that Lucas and Maya would've been cute but tbh you just introduced me to a dynamic I didn't even think of and I totally see how that could've been really cute and enjoyable to watch. I really just think that anybody could write Girl Meets World better than it was and no matter if the things that I wanted to happen did happen it would still be more interesting and entertaining to watch than that damn third season.
Y’know something that I VIVIDLY remember about GMW is that in S3 Zay asks Maya out on a date which was kind of out of the blue but I thought it was going to be a major plot point of the season and that we would get some insight into Zay and what he was like and WHY he asked her out exactly but,,,,,,It was literally never mentioned again-
I don't think u understood the point of that. Zay was not hinting at the possibility of having feelings for Maya in that moment, he was responding to the idea that Josh and Maya might have a relationship years down the line. In that episode, Zay brought up a really good point, which is that Maya shouldn't have to miss what is around her currently (her friends and having fun) just so she can put all her hope into being with Josh. So Zay offered to sit next to Maya at the movies when Lucas and Riley r together on a date or something, as a way to remind her that Riley being in a relationship will not mean she's alone or something to that effect
i am extremely embarrassed to say i was a HUGE corpanga, lucaya, and riarkle shipper. i did really really love shawn/angela tho. 🤣i still HATED riley even tho i was a simp for riarkle. i agree 100% about what you said about her being diffrent with farkle.
also, apparently the guy who played josh is a blue lives matter supporter. and apparently peyton (lucas) is a trump supporter too. then rowan liked biphobic tweets and tried to justify it by saying she has a trans girlfriend. and i love sabrina but she has said the n word in the past too. ugh. i really loved this show so much AND wrote wattpad fanfics. so embarrassing. 😭😭😭
Ohhh my god. Don't get me started on the religion episode. Where Riley wouldn't accept that Maya didn't really have faith in God. She threw a tantrum and told Maya she had to believe in God. And the worst part is, that episode could've ended well! Riley at the end said that she'd still be friends with Maya and she was sorry for being mad about her not believing the same things as her and that having her own beliefs is okay. Good ending right? Well no. After that the directer had to have Maya say "I prayed for the first time." And Riley got happier than she was before when she told her friend she loved her no matter what she believed. Hello. Disney. Wth. You're teaching kids it's not okay to have a different belief system and that you should push you're religion on others. That's something that I haven't really seen people talk about and it's really not okay.
I swear, this show sent me all the wrong messages. As someone who lived with Trump supporting-Ben Shapiro watching-conservatives, I did not grow up around good influences for my development and this episode actively taught 11 year old me to attack my friends who weren't christian. Thankfully, I did my research when I got older and I realized that I am my own person outside of what my parents told me and what I saw on TV. All in all, fuck that episode.

the maya/josh stuff was so grooossss. like they literally could've just had a running gag of it being like "oh maya has a crush on this guy 3 years older than her who's going to turn 18 soon and josh thinks its funny" bc like. its pretty normal for young girls to develop crushes on older guys as long as the older guy understands that he needs to turn her down. but the fact that they made them have literally any chemistry at all was absolutely disgusting
when I was younger I absolutely LOVED maya and josh but rewatching it even as an older teen made me feel so gross and weird. It was cute for me when I was maya's age in the show but when I became josh's age and watched it it gave me the creeps, especially when he said that he reciprocated her feelings. it kind of undid the whole 'you're too young for me and i don't feel that way for you because our brains are at different developmental stages right now and i see you as a child' narrative and made it into 'the only thing stopping me is the law so let's get together when we're both legal' which is so.....ugh. also yeah, three years isn't a big age gap as adults but they did NOT do enough to emphasize that by making them have chemistry. it could have been a great lesson for how both young girls and their older objects of affection should react in this kind of (very common) situation but instead they made it like actually romantic.

She did alot of masking too that's why I related to her so much. At least to me she looked like she was about to crack trying to figure out what and how other people were feeling by reading their body language ( I am terrible at it).

Luke Nance the issue is that Cory is also relatable. They both were ab,e to show different sides of the world and how they were able to grow and function from being in each other’s lives. We don’t get to see how Riley grows from Maya being part of her life, and although they sometimes show how positive Riley was with maya, they then turned it into a bad thing
The fact that Angela who is now married (for four years) came to NY just to see Shawn in order to get his advice on whether or not she'd be a good mother to her future children made 0 sense. Story wise, I get that they did it just to push Shawn away from his "one love" to move to Maya's mother but they didn't have to steamroll the Angela/Shawn relationship for the original series to do so...
the fact that they even tried to push him onto maya's mother is the worse thing that reboot could've ever done, he had no chemistry with her mom whatsoever.

Maya needs her character analyzed by a psychologist. She only liked josh because he was older and a sort of father figure, and got mad when he broke the rules and went out partying. She only loved him when he was around and forgot he existed when he wasn’t, like her father. She forced herself to fall into the “bad girl next door” trope because that’s what people expected of her, and we can tell that wasn’t really her when she refused to simply vandalize a little statue, or when somebody criticizes her style and she changed and never went back. She only liked Lucas because Riley did and she needed to grasp onto Riley, the normal all American teenage girl that she desperately wanted to be seen as. She didn’t think she was like family to Riley because they were close, she thought they were like family because all she had known was toxicity and Riley was a very toxic person. She adopted anybody willing to be her friend and took them right under her wing and was a huge pushover and people pleaser.

I really disliked how the writers and characters treated Riley’s character. I never really liked her, but the whole idea that she had to constantly be happy and was never really allowed to be sad. It was just so off putting like her friends kept things from her about the real world in order to keep her bubbly, but it wasn’t for her benefit it was only for theirs. Maya and Riley’s relationship was just so toxic and unhealthy and it went both ways. We all always analyze maya and her story and trauma, but there is always just something that didn’t sit well with me about how Riley’s parents treated her, it’s been a long time since I’ve watched it to be able to pin point a specific scene, idk it was iffy. But anyways I always thought that lowkey Riley was really depressed or like semi mentally unstable like there was definitely something going on there

I've never even seen this show I just like to listen to commentary on pop culture even the parts I'm unfamiliar with, but that is exactly what a lot of my friends did with me over the years. I still can't shake off my sunny disposition most of the time even when I'm really depressed because it's just such a force of habit, and to this day I even have complete strangers hesitate to tell me certain things about the world or their experiences because they don't want to "destroy my innocence" or assume I "can't handle it", and then when they do tell me they're surprised that I am already familiar to harsh things like that or that I don't react super emotionally to it, because I have in fact seen and heard of a lot of terrible things before. Just because I seem all "innocent" doesn't mean that I am only that way all of the time. This comment section hit the nail on the head though as to why that sort of thing always bothered me even though I couldn't quite put it into words. It's something a lot of people do for their own benefit not mine, not to mention it also feels really infantalizing. And yes I was also set up to fail to become a victim of all sorts of abuse later on in the name of "protecting my innocence" and I still struggle with feeling like I will have no friends if I don't play the part of the always happy, bubbly girl. So much of my life just got explained by a comment section on youtube and it's blowing my mind.

Ty was kind of like Lucas except much more cool and suave. Farkle and Smakle were kind of Gunther and Tinka except much more bland and not siblings. Shake It Up was a fun show. Girl Meets World was not.

But Disney straight up said Naaaah Maya can’t grow! She’s Maya Hart. & they literally stripped her of everything and turned her back to season one Maya.
But was it Disney or was it possible due to the writers suddenly realizing that if Maya grew she might not just wind up outshining Riley (because she was nicer and smarter than she let others think while Riley wanted others to think she was nice and smarter than she actually was) but might decide that Riley's NOT all that and tone things down if not quit hanging with her altogether (and where would Riley be without her biggest worshipper)?

Maya and Shawn stopped being compelling when they forced Shawn to be mayas father. They didn't need to happen. He could have been a Mr. Turner or even what Cory's father was to shawn. They had a good relationship and even though it would have been cool to see turner adopt shawn, it didn't take away from their relationship. But with maya and shawn it seemed like the only point was to have shawn adopt maya and not to build this attachment

Maybe i’m over exaggerating, but if someone is atheist those are their beliefs and you shouldn’t try and convince them God exists or not, because those are THEIR BELIEFS.

Speaking of interracial couples do y’all notice how zendaya was by racial but the roles she played never reflected on what her actually family looks like. Like I’m all for black love but y’all got a biracial light skin half black girl, she could have had a biracial family for her in KC undercover and shake it up because you know there are lots of little girls that could have been like oh that’s what my family looks like and she looks like me but no. At the end of the day, I say this as a full black teen young woman, Disney not only should have more diversity in terms of black people but as far as biracial people too. The only new or recent Disney show I can think of that has a biracial kid is that new show Sydney to the max which of course it does kills off her mother(she passed away in the show) and lives with her white father and grandmother and is almost not in touch with the African American side of her self because instead of Disney trying to represent interracial couples with biracial kids they instead say you know we don’t want black people in the show and the girl is half black it’s a win win let the storyline be that her black mother is dead. Disney needs to represent more POC and biracial kids in there shows at this point there really is no excuse for why there Disney shows are hella vanilla. Cory and Topanga’s relationship triggered me. It felt so unrealistic and so forced sometimes. It just didn’t seem practical and I always felt like it shows a bad message. But I was fine with that after a certain point. But my very last straw was when they split up Shawn and Angela. And then the way that they wrote her in in Girl Meets World sent me into s rage.
And everyone pretended as though Cory and Topanga STILL had THE perfect relationship. Would anyone have thought so if Cory seemed constantly annoyed with Topanga and had made fun of her salary insecurity, brains,etc. in front of their friends and children? Or,for that matter, didn't consider what HER POV would be when thinking of moving the family abroad? Seriously, someone on the show should have told them to get counseling to see if they could salvage their dysfunctional union or call it a day!

I don’t think any of them (besides Farkle) were that good of friends tbh. Riley was dramatic and made everything about her and would constantly talk badly about Maya’s life, and wanted Maya to be some rebellious girl with no development. And Maya would coddled Riley and wouldn’t call her out or give her the opportunity to grow as a person and wanted her to stay naive to the world because she uses Riley’s positivity as her safe place despite Riley’s many real negative emotions like feeling insecure.

i rewatched some episodes of girl meets world a while ago and the one where they thought farkle had aspergers was one of them, and i really couldn't shake how off it made me feel. when his parents first announced that they thought he had it, riley and maya were like "no no no you don't, you're just farkle" and it really left a bad taste in my mouth when they said that. i didn't understand why it would've been such a bad thing if farkle did have it, and, it would've added something that him and smackle had together and could talk about it.

If Disney had some sense they would’ve kept Shawn and Angela together, then they could have their little mixed babies and then they could at least claim there was SOME diversity instead of an all white cast
Where they messed up with Lukas is that unlike cory and topanga, Lukas was literally just there to be a love interest, where as topanga was her own character who ended up becoming the love interest.
If anything Farkle is more like Topanga personality wise
There was always something about Maya’s character that seemed so off to me because of how awful she was to people a lot of the time. But looking back on it now, when I’m older, I realize it’s because the show never went into the causes of her behavior in depth and why she acted the way she did. She could’ve been such an interesting main character to watch grow and learn but they didn’t give her the chance to and that feels wrong :(
I know I'm going to get bashed at this but I didn't like Maya or riley riley annoyed me and Maya just didn't sit right with me either.... my fave character was farkle I loved the way his personality was I found him cute and adorable
I hated the whole Riley Committee thing. Maya (and the others) wanted to keep Riley innocent and naïve and this ball of sunshine because that was her escape from the world, and that was really selfish. She kept her from growing, and set her up to fail and most likely be a victim of some type of violent crime. There was so much potential for both characters, but that one plot point just destroyed it all. Like, if there was no Riley Committee, Riley would get to grow up and mature and just understand things better and all that, and Maya wouldn't be setting her best friend up to fail.
Also, get rid of the triangle. That was just bullshit and ruined so many friendships. If you're gonna have a triangle, don't have it be between 3 main characters. Have a character involved who's just recurring. But honestly, triangles are the worst...

Yes, the language was so weird! I was looking for a comment that talked about this. Some episodes I had no idea what the issue even WAS. The bully episode for example was so confusing to me. For most of it I wasn't even sure why Riley was upset, and did we actually ever see the bully? It was like a metaphor?? What the fuck??? They would talk in scriptures or something, it was so odd. Did Boy Meets World have this problem too? It seems like a much better show, but I unfortunately don't know much about it to say for certain.

Maya in season 3 proceeded towards character development. Upon that main character syndrome Riley suffers from, she spirals in a fit of envy of whatever good comes to Maya. Her best friend - she actually feels threatened that her best friend is doing good in school, gravitating to a world of glory. She was in a better place. Confused because of the triangle, however she did good, striving for better grades, and like many teenagers at that age, she is struggling with direction. But she is trying!
Riley is _the_ worst friend for trying to reverse that development. In the pilot episode, now, wasn't that the premise of this whole damn show? About Riley keeping Maya out of trouble?
I also completely agree with you about diversity. Trina McGee deserved a better light in the revival. The writers littered her underneath the rug. More storylines - I would of loved to see a Maya and Angela relationship. There was potential. Yet it was so wasted.

I always think about that one episode where they were going to some heritage fair, had a whole long thing for each character about where they came from, I think farkle realized he watch Dutch or something, and they COMPLETELY ignored Zay and only Zay. an incredibly missed opportunity to teach kids a little bit about black culture.
Farkle learned his great-grandfather was actually a survivor of the Holocaust and Say was like 'I'm from Africa'. So Haiti and St Kitts straight up don't exist? And he literally just said 'Africa'. That's a continent, not a country. He could have said Egypt or Nigeria or South Africa, but nope. Way to generalize a bunch of countries, Disney.
I remember this show trying to be so deep and relatable when it really wasn't any of those things... It was so dramatic and stupid sometimes for no reason, just to show a lesson in a really unrealistic way.
I feel like Lucas should have been with Smackle instead. They had an interesting dynamic (unlike Rucas who had such a BORING relationship) but the dynamic wasn’t toxic or filled with negativity (unlike Lucaya with Maya constantly picking on Lucas). Smackle would have made Lucas a lil bit more interesting and Lucas could have helped Smackle be a lil bit more chilled and who she wants to be. And when Smackle made her jokes about him liking her, he would laugh everytime (which is different from Maya because he would take it seriously sometimes). And it would’ve been a real plot twist too cuz ain’t nobody was taking her that seriously when she kept making them jokes

AJ sometimes he was tolerant of it and other times he genuinely didn’t like it, so I feel she should’ve stopped. Lucas laughed everytime Smackle pretended he was flirting with her and would sometimes go along with it (and the stuff Smackle said were actually funny and harmless too, Maya sometimes was just being mean to him so of course he wouldn’t be alright with it)
I don't like that personally. Probably because I ship Smarkle and Zarkle more but who knows. They acted more like friends to me.
I always thought that Lucas and Maya would've been cute but tbh you just introduced me to a dynamic I didn't even think of and I totally see how that could've been really cute and enjoyable to watch. I really just think that anybody could write Girl Meets World better than it was and no matter if the things that I wanted to happen did happen it would still be more interesting and entertaining to watch than that damn third season.

I don't think u understood the point of that. Zay was not hinting at the possibility of having feelings for Maya in that moment, he was responding to the idea that Josh and Maya might have a relationship years down the line. In that episode, Zay brought up a really good point, which is that Maya shouldn't have to miss what is around her currently (her friends and having fun) just so she can put all her hope into being with Josh. So Zay offered to sit next to Maya at the movies when Lucas and Riley r together on a date or something, as a way to remind her that Riley being in a relationship will not mean she's alone or something to that effect

Ohhh my god. Don't get me started on the religion episode. Where Riley wouldn't accept that Maya didn't really have faith in God. She threw a tantrum and told Maya she had to believe in God. And the worst part is, that episode could've ended well! Riley at the end said that she'd still be friends with Maya and she was sorry for being mad about her not believing the same things as her and that having her own beliefs is okay. Good ending right? Well no. After that the directer had to have Maya say "I prayed for the first time." And Riley got happier than she was before when she told her friend she loved her no matter what she believed. Hello. Disney. Wth. You're teaching kids it's not okay to have a different belief system and that you should push you're religion on others. That's something that I haven't really seen people talk about and it's really not okay.
I swear, this show sent me all the wrong messages. As someone who lived with Trump supporting-Ben Shapiro watching-conservatives, I did not grow up around good influences for my development and this episode actively taught 11 year old me to attack my friends who weren't christian. Thankfully, I did my research when I got older and I realized that I am my own person outside of what my parents told me and what I saw on TV.
All in all, fuck that episode.

Afriasia Bermudez-Crespin too be fair that was because of insecurity not autism but they did play with stereotypes a lot. I also hated how they gave her a makeover to make Farkle like her and she kept all of it.

I find it weird how Maya was supposed to be the “tomboy” of the Riley/Maya friend duo, but growing up, from middle school to high school to college, (I'm now 19 in college) she dresses way more glam than most of the girls at the schools I went to growing up 😂
