Oh my. I need this so much! You totally described me...Paints, drawing, sculpture, fabric art, I have it all going at once and I DO feel like I'm spreading my creativity thin. Thank you for the idea of zoning in on one thing I am feeling the most. Love your gentle demeanor!
I'm glad that Louise Fletcher turned me on to you. I'm loosening up on my assumptions that abstract artists haven't paid their dues of learning to draw, understand color, composition, and balance.
Many Abstract artists started as Graphic Artists…. They can draw and do know all the elements and principles of art because they are trained this way. Look at Picasso’s work when he was 16…. Abstract expression is more about digging deep into their soul and finding who they are and then slowly excavating this inner self. Creating what they need to say to the world….if we don’t have a “why” then there is always a struggle with “how” to express our story to ourselves and the world.
Hi Nick! Happy to see you here .....I find it really cool that you pop-up like this to give us a pep talk and guide us through our journey. I enjoy this contact so much and keeps me focused. I like listening to your videos while I’m in my atelier working. You are great company! Thank you for appearing in my life and encouraged me to continue the great journey! Tomorrow...No today is my 68 th birthday. I plan on doing something symbolic with the roll of watercolour paper I’ve been saving. I bought it for my 60th bday and never used it. So this time I promised myself that I would do it this time. An amazing birthday gift from me to me! Happy Birthday to me....Love is all you need ❤️ Lorraine from Quebec Canada
Thank you this is so honest and wise. You make these videos so well that it feels as though you are in my studio just talking. in fact I listen to your YT videos while I paint. Kathy, Australia.
I’ve only just come across this video and omg can I totally relate to this! I have given up on art because my life doesn’t allow me to be free and inspired and life has just drained me but now and again I get fired up again so back I go into RUclips looking at other artists and trying out all these new things hoping to get inspiration and find my way back to art. I need to stop watching and do! I also need to just let go and paint. Thank you for all your advice and sharing your thoughts and methods and ideas on how to move forward when you are just stuck.
I'm a complete beginner. Every time I watch a new video, read a new book, or look at a new artist's work, I want to paint like that! I think I'm in [self-taught] art school, trying to soak up everything. So far, just in one medium (watercolor).
I can relate so much in the beginning to buy so much thinking that was the answer but today mixing the colors made me step back about buying different colors just play and mix. Exciting.
I am new to art. I finally decided to take the plunge and have fun with it! Thank you for normalizing the struggles of finding your way. Also, as a therapist by trade, I really connect with your explanations as the way you describe finding your niche in art is very similar to helping people gain insight and trust in themselves and so much more.
Wow, I appreciate this so much - talking to me in such a kind, knowledgeable and intelligent way about my art. Thank you, Nic. Thank you for sharing your 'road map'.
It is good to hear about the many art interests you have had as I went through the same processes for years. I studied and practiced art in many areas. I did oil painting, acrylic, watercolor, airbrush, glass painting, drawing, sculpture, pastel, ceramics and I thought about encaustic but did not do that. I had a friend who became a professional sculptor and she could not understand why I left sculpture as she loved it so much. I told her I missed working with color. I got to use some of my skills with a book I wrote called "Visions of a Star Traveler." It is about out of the ordinary experiences I had over many years. I did the front cover in oil painting and the back cover in glass painting. Many people told me they liked the art work. I write but I love working with color and I probably always will. You are right experimentation with any medium is very important.
I so relate to everything you have said. Good to know I was not alone in this way of thinking. Then guilt came into the picture as I spent so much. on all these materials. Thank goodness I could use some of them in teaching, but I was still searching for the right fit. Thank you for sharing this part of your story.
Very recognisable - and maybe curiosity is part of creativity - but I must admit that great work is not necessarily dependent on perfect materials - but good material is a pleasure but of course not enough to make good work - I think it all begins with felt life - and then express it in whatever way is meaningfull to you - and I totally agree that it is absolutely important to play and just be into what attracts you.
Thanks so much. So helpful and confirming what I'm finally getting having spurned advice to 'work in a series' for years. Finally experimenting serially in my paintings and see how great it is. Terrific advice to 'narrow it down' and follow what you love and see where it takes you!
This conversation was really enlightening. I realized now that I need to focus more and not let the distractions of art supplies get to my head. For myself, I think just simplifying and minimizing before moving on to other projects. I've also been to Bali many times, it's the best place to find inner peace and I did bring a sketch book and a small art supply set. Thank you, I'll be watch more.
This was a brilliant sharing. Thank you so much. It covered everything I have been processing for years, in retrospect. You pulled it into focus for me💙👼 Gratitude💙 You are a natural my friend.
Thank you..iv one painting I love I'm so afraid of it because it's me!...I'm trying everything else but this one keeps looking at me..and I painted it without thinking. .I'm gona do more of same..I've written poetry..and have a note book like yours..I'm very hidden away..when I took it down from the attic..and read them..I thought when as that me!..yes it was..because it was my spirit that freed me to do..it'll do same with my paintings. ..thank you
1:22 Wisconsin. Hi there I love the input and suggestions! I find when I'm feeling dry or uncreative that if I do a different type of art form and play ...not being concerned about the outcome I often get re - energized and it fuels my creativity for the main art I'm doing . I also usually really like the "play" piece . Also , when I don't I paint over pieces and then I love the textures coming from underneath and that usually makes way better pieces .
I really started to re-vist painting last year when in COVID "lockdown" so visiting new places has not been something I can do (not to mention I don't have the $$ to travel to Tahiti!-lol). I kind of have to look to other's work for inspiration at this time. But you're advice on focusing down the subject/technique can open up my depth is what I'm going to keep in mind. I've been doing realist landscape and abstract forms and still life. I have to focus on one of these and explore it more deeply. thank you.
Thanks so much for this Nick! Goes straight to the heart of where I am and why I’m so looking forward to the course with you. All good wishes from the UK.
Thank you for sharing your gold nuggets of wisdom with us. It’s come intuitively to me to narrow down on excess things in my studio. Now you said it and it’s been given life. I will continue to listen and learn. Love when you showed how to enrich colors by using several colors on the pallet to change hues! 💖
So glad to be here, hello everyone. Nick, these sessions are wonderful: articulating paths to inspiration, and laying groundwork for that path. Breadcrumbs indeed!
I believe the universe gives us what we need when you are ready to receive it…I needed to here this right this very moment….I am so scattered And I really love some small abstracts I did …and then I went off to do something else which of course did not give me as much pleasure…so why not help going with what we love🤗🤗🤔🧐because we are perverse
Hi Nick! I hear what you're saying! I've spent a small fortune trying differing mediums from Ceramics to Mosaics, Stained Glass Mezuzahs, Oils, Acrylics, watercolors, collaging, art journaling... people have criticized me for being all over the map!
Obrigada .. Nunca consegui vender nada ate agora ..
I am now where you were back then. I have more supplies than Dick Blick!! I'm afraid I will never be able to paint. I started out painting still life. But I'm taken with abstract. And now i'm afraid I can't paint anything.
I really have struggled with what medium to settle on. I feel as though I am unable to discover/create my signature sty;e when I am all over the map. Also trying to please others by creating art "they" will love instead of art that is a true expression of my soul.
How do you no what draws you to artists and how do you no if you are going to like their work and do you think it is important for artists to keep in contact.
Nicholas, do you still offer a free workshop? Problem I have is, I’m retired so I finally have the time to paint, but financial resources are less. Argh!!
Thought this was live but my comment dont seem to be being seen. And the live comment section I just found I cant add to as there is no keyboard for it. Gosh darn it

Wow, great stuff! I’m a beginner and you opened my eyes to some really helpful ideas. Feeling more excited and confidence! Thank you!
You give solid ideas with explanations I feel like bringing my art supplies out and give them a test run reigniting my interests. Thank you for that 🙏
I'm learning by leaps and bounds, and super excited about my next time in the studio!

Love this talk and comments. I find that constraints drive creativity.

“The tyranny of choice!”
The more you do better we get.
Good morning from the UK!
LOL I’ve done the same thing!!! Not enough time to use all the supplies ~ 😂😊❤
Ha! I have so many unused supplies as well.
I was trying to use a paint scraper and struggling to make it do what I wanted. Just seen the trowel post.. Thanks.
I am now where you were back then. I have more supplies than Dick Blick!! I'm afraid I will never be able to paint.
