    Optics, sensor quality and bit rate trump resolution.
    I've been very happy with our Viofo A139. Front 1440p rear 1080p and excellent sensors and optics, configurable bit rates and easy access to recorded videos with the app.
    Their little Bluetooth button to save a recording is useful for near-misses too. Much easier than fiddling around for a button on the camera itself.

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool That is because, that particular Viofo, uses one of the best surveillance cam sensor produced by Sony (Starvis 2 IMX678), which dramatically improves image quality, particularly in low light so, if I had to choose, well.. it's the obvious.

    1920x1080P is not 2K, it's full HD. 2K is 2560 × 1440P, the Viofo Mini 2 can record at this resolution in either 30 frames per second (fps) or 60fps. I've got two of these Viofo Mini 2's, one in the front, one in the back. Excellent little cameras, lots more resolutions to choose from, but 2K is the best. GPS is important. Mine are set up to show GPS coordinates, time & date, speed, my car reg, again these are options.

      Wikipedia says: "2K resolution is a generic term for display devices or content having a horizontal resolution of approximately 2,000 pixels. In the movie projection industry, Digital Cinema Initiatives is the dominant standard for 2K output and defines a 2K format with a resolution of 2048 × 1080. For television and consumer media, 1920 × 1080 is the most common 2K resolution, but this is normally referred to as 1080p."

      Splitting hairs really, as it's part of the merchandising, give it an easily recognisable tech label, 2K, and it will sell more easily. But, to anyone who has bought tv's, monitors, camcorders, or any consumer product to do with moving images in the last 10 years, 1920x1080P is full HD or FHD. Its old school, not what you would expect from a 2023 dash cam, unless your main objective was to save pennies on the SD card. 1920x1080P is the lowest resolution out of six resolutions offered by the Viofo A119 Mini 2. But as @DevAnubis points out below, Optics, sensor quality and bit rate trump resolution.

    Didn't we use to call 1920×1080 Full HD? 🤔 Anyway nice video and thanks for comparison. You'd think higher resolution would help read licence plates better, but it doesn't seem to. In that case it's far better to strike a balance between file size, refresh rate, form factor and features and of course price.

    Slight Correction - 2K resolution is actually 2560x1440 pixels but anyways my Viofo Dashcam is a solid investment and I recommend it to other people when they ask (A129 Plus Duo) very similar but has a rear camera

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool I clicked the link to the dashcam in the video description and the main product page says 2560x1440 - quote ''Quad HD 2560x1440P 60fps/30fps''. You can technically go into the dashcam settings and downscale the resolution from 2560x1440p to 1920x1080p if you wish to save storage

    Looks like night time videos were taken at different times. The 4k night video has more details in the shadows and grass is brighter yet the sky is pitch black. This would indicate that 4k video was taken when the sky was much darker. Also the headlights seem to light up the road and the grass a lot more which also indicates that it was darker outside when 4k dash cam recording was done. You can also see another car in 2k dash cam night video that is not present in 4k dash cam video which suggests that night videos were not taken at the same time.
    This can be very misleading.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      The two clips were filmed at the same time - any differences were due to the quality of the sensors and lenses in each camera. The Viofo really is that much better at night.

      That is weird that the 4k didn't even pick up the headlights of that car coming from the right hand side. Literally saw nothing but I really thought it would have at least picked up the headlights

    The live view of the k4 cam is HD, download the file to get better quality.
    I have the new 4k cam with wifi5 and I am quite impressed with it, it's not the quality of my 4k cctv cams but its better than the HD one I replaced it with

      We did directly download all the footage from the camera’s memory cards. We think this camera’s ’4k’ output is simply a 2K sensor that has been upscaled. We have a selection of more expensive 4K dash cams to test soon - hopefully they will be true 4K this time…

    I've got one, it's a go pro and it is really clear when you play it back on the computer. I don't know what its technical things are I'm too old for all that! I don't use it much I find it too much faffing about to set up and it's fell off a couple of times, I don't want it wired in permanently. My Son goes mad because I don't use it much!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 месяцев назад

      We use GoPros to film our normal videos - but not for use as a dash cam. They aren't really suited to that job as they don't start recording automatically, or delete the oldest files on the memory card when it's full. For daily driving a £100 dash cam is actually better than a £300 GoPro!

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool It's a go pro Dash cam it does all the 2 minute slots and dumps the old stuff first. I've got a regular camera that can sit on the dashboard for recording whole drives. Although it sits on the (sometimes) non slip mat, have come to grief with it a couple of times!

      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 месяцев назад

      We did try it at that resolution (which gave better quality) but reduced it to 1920 x 1080 for our ‘4K v 2K’ comparison. 👍🏼

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool "2k" is 2560x1440p though.
      1920x1080 is just "1k" (or "Full HD")
      4k is the equivalent of four 1080p images.
      2k is the equivalent of about 1.7x 1080p images.
      Computer resolutions are weird.
