I had mad respect for Jesse when he did that!! I hate when old artists come back and they haven't learned anything 🙄
I get why new school artists get the label one trick ponies but I never got that with Jesse. Portraits just weren't his specialty, but he improved tremendously at his weak spot. He's awesome all around.
I'd have an even greater respect for him if he called "new-school" for an artist that specialized in black and grey portraits.
Make them walk a mile in the other artist's shoes.
100% respect for Jesse for practicing & improving his skills, so many people when they get critiques, goes in one ear & out the other, he actually listened & improved himself

Almost cried when the client quietened with respect when the artist mentioned his own disastrous tattoo - kinda showed me how I might better de-escalate rather than fuel conflict. Thank you guys x

Criticizing an artist for giving a girl a very bold, masculine tattoo that the canvas specifically asked for, by saying "You should've gone lighter for a lady. I'd hate for a cute girl to walk in for a tattoo and then leave the studio a little...less cute"

Am I the only one who thought the Obama portrait was off? Didn’t look good at all to me. The JFK portrait looked the best imo.

The Obama portrait was very soft but was limited in its contrast. I think they were trying to take that into account in addition to the insane improvement he made when judging it
doing a portrait of a black man on black skin isn't easy, especially when trying to show contrast, but I thought he did a great job. Right side of the pic was a little darker than the left and Jesse followed that, but I especially liked the "wrinkles" in Obama's smile that he was able to capture.

Facts
Bubba not getting upset with that angry canvas was amazing. A complete contrast to how the other contestants handle everyone around them. Artists grow and this is a great example of that, Im so glad James gave him a second chance. They were so hard on Bubba, like jesusss. But hopefully the artists around him know now how important it is to take a clients requests seriously. I notice how often they get blown off by the tattoo artists here because of the pressure. You must be flexible.
The canvas didn't want to be angry. He was trying to appeal to the artist's own experiences, and Bubba delivered ("I'm glad he didn't suplex me"). That's probably why he was so keen on accepting the portrait tattoo.
Jim thought he was a shoo-in for the job.
James really didn't want to stay mad. He wanted to find a rapport, and Bubba answered with a messed-up portrait of his own kid.

This teaches me that a lot of the tattooers in Ink Master are actually good or great artists and when they screw up is a combination of pressure/bad days/time limits etc.
Bubba's portrait tattoo is good, like REALLY good (and i loved that moment)!
I always wonder what amazing tattoos we've missed out on thanks to the sabotaging and back-biting. Imagine if each tattooist got to do their best for each challenge...

I think Bubba's portrait was actually better than the original reference photo.
Like the tattoo was closer to what the cameraman saw through the lens when they took the photo decades ago.
Bubba revealed that he knows how it feels to have a bad portrait of someone you love dearly, showing how bad he must feel to know he did that to someone else, and then they hugged it out. I found that interaction very lovely. The new portrait he did is amazing.
His little aside ("I'm glad he didn't suplex me") sealed it.
Aaron giving everyone the middle finger when getting complimented on his portrait is still one of the funniest moments. There was no hesitation in his movements he was ready!
9:27 I looked up James 'Rudeboy' Riley to see where he wrestles at, since I'm a wrestling fan and didn't recognize him...turns out he got arrested in 2017 and sentenced in 2018 for possession and promotion of child porn...that's a big yikes...

I'd argue that the Phoenix isn't a Phoenix.... It's more like the Peacock version of a Phoenix. I expected more brighter oranges, yellows. Flames, Ashes. None of that was put on to the tattoo.
It’s a hou-ou which is a Japanese phoenix. And it was a good looking one in my opinion.

@@anaalina5964 I'm just basing it on my understanding of the bird. It might have another version, but if I were to go to a shop and that's what I was given and I didn't know about that, then I would be pissed.
In the versions I'm used to seeing, which mind you stems from games like Final Fantasy, the bird is entirely on fire and is more set to colors like oranges, yellows and reds.

Bubba is exactly what I'd want in someone doing something so personally for me. His humility under such stress was great.
They are so creative. I'm an artist myself but goodness I can't think of an art piece let alone a permanent tattoo in just an hour or so. That would make me stress for a week 😅😕.
None of these are new, they are most are just designs they have mastered over years of tattooing extremely similar things.
As an art history lover, the Degas tattoo was stunning and such and incredible comeback! I also really love the sincerity of the artists to make it right for the canvases that they botched and those too came out improved and better.

If you know that a bad Tattoo might screw up your career, why would you go on ink master!? Might as well spend the money in a shop If you are going to complain, like you knew the risks😂

It’s an *enormous* risk to go on Ink Masters, particularly if having a bad tattoo will make or break a career. You could walk away with an AMAZING piece of art for free, or you could get a messed up tattoo that has had its flaws pointed out in full, zoomed-in detail on national television. Fully depends on what artist you get, what the challenge is, and anything else that could potentially go wrong.
I actually wouldn't mind visiting someone who was a master of portraits, or of stained glass, or Japanese etc, rather than an artist that can do a decent passing job of each

The whole concept doesn't really relate to irl. Like who gets a tattoo from someone who can't do that style or from a artist they don't like. Also the time limits and having to finish it in 1 setting etc etc.
The pressure while competing on the show is nuts. I'm glad they did these redemptions.

Jesse really has improved on both black and grey and portraits. While I don't understand why anyone wants Obama tattooed on them forever, but it is a very well done tattoo.

For some of them the problem was their composition, so they couldnt just add on to the original
Idk much about tattooing but every time one of these guys say "I'm working on darkskin" I then see their "canvas" and I'm like where's the dark skin? Every time I hear that, the canvas ain't even really got dark skin. It makes me wonder for tattoos, is anything more than super pale not ideal for this competition? One of the times I heard that, the person was slightly tanned. I'm just confused because I've seen some killer tats on many of my friends, sounds like they just need an excuse and they love to pull that one if the canvas ain't paper white. Oh and many of those killer tats are color, so I know it's more than possible to do bada** color tats on dark skin.
Just weird I never heard of that being a thing until watching these since yesterday.
I think it's only in terms of getting an outline to pop. The lighter the skin, the better. It's just physics. And this is a competition.

No your concerns are definitely correct lmao, colors can definitely pop on dark skin, it just requires a different technique. Plus most the canvases who have “dark skin” are not dark at all. It’s really just an excuse because they don’t want to take the time to give good tattoos to everyone, only the people it’ll be easier on.

probably because most of them can't afford to. they are signing up for free tattoos after all, and finishing it off the show would mean paying the artist for that caliber of work. i mean you can see a lot of the canvasses' other tattoos and a lot of them are questionable at best. just my thoughts

I have soooo much respect and admiration to Bubba, this guy really stepped up on his skills and actually became an Ink Master from being a really weak link, that's the message ppl don't you dare to stop for a loss or a mistake, you need to keep going, put yourself back up and try again for the better
The last one, I didn't like golden skulls nearly as much as I liked the other shops portraits. Sure the hair on the one guy was off but they nailed that portrait. Aarons portrait, the whole face looked off to me.

Forced perspective is a hard tattoo. Not something I'd get I don't like the style but he did make it nice.

The one thing I hate hearing from all the redemption artists is their concern over specifically THEIR redemption. Tattoos are permanent and GENERALLY cannot be removed, hearing an artist be more concerned about their "redemption" than ensuring their person gets a GOOD finished product sincerely bothers me, especially when there ISN'T a time limit in the redemption works
33:16 agreed! Cleen is a great tattoo artist but there were challenges where his work average compared to several others and he won.
When they bring the show back all judging should be blind.

I think Bubba Irwin is probably my favorite out of all of the seasons. How much he has progressed and how intensely he has focused on being better is amazing. Every video you watch of him he shows a constant desire to perfect his craft and that is a true artist.
Bubba did a fantastic job. Good for him.
I'm enjoying watching the show on RUclips, but I'm glad I don't watch it in real time because the manufactured drama takes away from artistry on show.
This show should be more about celebrating ability through healthy competition, not fanning flames of fractious, fictitious melodrama.

Artist tells you, what you want will not work in the time allotted. And then you get upset because the artist didn’t finish. That’s on you 100%.

When everyone is like "whaaaaat!?" about the black and grey portrait and I'm just like "... That's literally the very first tattoos you learn when you start to do tattooing..."
For context, Jesse was a new school artist who primarily did cartoon animals and creatures in his own time, so for him to declare black and grey portraits as the challenge was pretty shocking. It’s essentially the exact opposite of his specialty, and it was what got him sent home on his previous season, so it was a risky move and one that the other artists weren’t expecting.

Not every artist knows how to do portraits unfortunately. Go to shops and look at their work.

Bubba is a great tattooer, DJ is a great tattooer, just bc DJ might have just a tad more talent doesn’t mean that “he carried Bubba” through the shop wars season. Bubba earned the title of Ink Master just as much as DJ did.
If they ever do this type again, I have a painting id love tattooed on me to cover up and hide my cancer scars
