I remember when these were cutting edge racecars. I'm 70 now and they're still exciting to watch and listen to. My favorite cars were the chaperells. Jim Hall and Hap Sharp were my heroes. It was a wonderful era.
You lived through and saw? a very exciting time for race car development. Things are different now, may I suggest the technology is more mature? so the pace of change is slower, but I envy you, and it's good to hear you are still interested. Best wishes from the UK.
I’m 70 also, so feel much the same as you. I’m from Indianapolis, so my first race was roadsters at the Indy 500 in 1962. We got to see many of the great European drivers like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill in the following years. I also liked the Chaparrals.
Ditto, I was at that race also . The Chaperral 2F was technically very advanced and generally much faster than equivalent F1 cars of the day and probably the Ford GT Mk 4 also. Sadly, reliability problems (usually transmission) scuppered it's chances elsewhere, but fantasticly spectacular to watch nevertheless.
@randddod I do remember that they usually had transmission issues. The cars were amazing though. And they were so loud. It's probably why I have hearing problems to this day.
Fabulous rare coverage of an historically important race for so many reasons. Ferrari clinched S/P Championship, only time Jackie Steward drove a works Ferrari, he had been asked to drive for Porsche and accepted.... but that's another story, and only International win for the 2F. I am really grateful to you for sharing. Many thanks.
I was there at Druids as a 15 year old schoolboy and have some photos. The Ferrari was my favourite, it still survives and went into a French collection. Think it was sold a couple of years ago, the car carried Number 60 in the race.
Very rare to see the chequered flag done properly, like it is here. It should only be waved to the winner, then held still for everyone else, signifying the end of the race.
Chaparral's only win in the World Sportscar Championship that year in the season ending race, despite the 2F's major technological advances. I read Phil Hill complained that Hall's decision to use small aircraft batteries to save weight resulted in numerous avoidable starter problems. It was a great win, but the big 7 litre Chevy engines were banned for the following year, and Hill was then left out of Hall's Can-Am plans for 1968, deciding to run just one car in the series. Sadly, Hill's co-driver, Mike Spence was killed only 10 months later in Indy 500 practice.
Ah yes - Brands in the early 70's . My mate Dave and I used to gain free entry to the circuit - via a hole in the chain link fence. Well we were still at school ( and didn't have any money) . Should imagine the security is a bit more high tech nowadays. The Yanks were truly ahead of the game with their wing . Must have looked bizarre to the natives

Pretty cool looking sports cars. Some glorious engine sounds....a different world, a different era in Motorsports.
A great race, I was there to see it, from the golden years of motor racing.

Is there a recording like this of the spa 1000km in 1967 😮 I love the UK recaps done like this
Very rare to see the chequered flag done properly, like it is here. It should only be waved to the winner, then held still for everyone else, signifying the end of the race.
Nice to see it in colour back then.
Masterpiece video. :)
No pit lane speed limits in those days, plus a free-for-all with few "boxes"!
Best, most interesting track in the UK - much better than the bland Silverstone!
The gradient makes it a characterful and charismatic track.
awesome video,
Brilliant!
Thanks for making my day!!

Back when sports cars were rolling works of art, before aerodynamics had evolved to make them ugly.
