- Maine Central (Guilford) GP38 #263 works the M&L branch (Manchester & Lawrence) in Salem,NH in May of 1989. They run up north of the Agway to pick up a coil steel car! Part 1. Video by Richard 'Moose' Ouellette. If you like our stuff, Please comment and/or subscribe!
Thanks for posting this. I grew up about 1/3 mile to the north of this and spent plenty of time as a kid hanging out watching this scene play out, my time as a kid being the 70's. The crew was nice and let a kid bug them, "help" them couple/uncouple, etc. Great memories, and one cab ride.
Awesome video !
I recognize what is now the back of Twoguys Smoke Shop !
I use to live in Methuen, maybe a thousand yards from the line. These video's bring back so many memories. THANK YOU.
Time for more M&L stuff Craig!
i remember seeing trains here in my high school days, sad those branch lines are gone. NH is a worse place from narrow minded people letting train service leave
I remember playing on those lumber cars with my brother while my parents were in grossmans. Me and my brother tried to push the parked train car. We were not successful :P I never saw a train on this line in person, only in these awesome videos.
Sad this branch is gone now!
All the coil cars I've ever seen have been in the Louisville area; this is the first video I've seen of one all the way up here. And the only GP38's I see are the ones on NHN. I've gotta say, though, the coolest thing about this video is the M&L. It's so sad that it's no more. I'm really glad that "Moose" and you shot and posted all of this, respectively. I was one when this video was shot, so my memories of this era are a little hazy!
I had never seen a coil car around here either, until I saw this vid....pretty cool, I've still got more M&L stuff to put on too. Craig
Post some more Craig!
Maine Central 263, had quite an impressive air-horn.
Can't say for sure, but, the second man out of the cab and seen again at 12:18 looks like Mike Gooden from the NHVT fame. He was our supervisor up there after Clyde took over. He was also a Guilford scab too. Guess he now works for Hobo in Lincoln.
hey at 21:40 that is my old computer store ComputerTown a Mac reseller Great flick thanks for sharing
Sad that all the industries went away and now the place is filled with shitty corporations with crappy pay. Thank god for these video records tho, wow
Look at those tracks! Derailments must’ve been a frequent occurrence.
Guilford were extremely horrible with track maintenance.
Problem solve. No more track !
A really rich guys switching layout .
I'll never know for sure, but there's a chance that monte carlo that pulled in front of the train at Grossman's was my dad! hahaha!
Well it is a rail trail now but, revenue rail ops and manufacturing must have been so much better for the region versus the retail and services economy we have now.
You've got quite a treasure trove of railroad videos. Is there any way that you could upload this one again? The technology has vastly improved, and it is certainly worth the effort for preservation's sake. If you need help, I will volunteer my services to get the best image quality possible.
BEAUTIFUL K5LA!
Yeah Tim Mellon is a rich guy! I don't think i'd have the boys over to see this layout though. i'd be embarassed.
God, how old are these
Tracks? Are they original? 18670s? Earlier? Hard to believe still used.
The branch is long gone.....as far as the business, I don't know.
If I recall the 263 was scrapped.
263 is actually still intact, its now PRLX 3617
Awesome! Wow. I wonder what were those tarp loads? And where were those steel coils pulled from? Is that place still in business as far you know?
The steel coil cars were from Zurbach Steel. I grew up in Salem and remember the company being there at least since the early '60's. They are long gone however.
I wonder what happend to all the old alco,ge,and the old geeps on guilford including their {odd ball} locomotives?
The only geeps they have now are GP9s and GP40s. They also have a good number of SD40s/SD40-2s also. Two of their GP40-2s number 308 and 314 were sold to Vermont Railway as 303 and 308.
scrap maybe
Yeah look at the track condition looks like a really bad hand laid track effort the B&A boxcars looked cool just about one of everything they had.
