Boat Interferes With Firefighting Planes - Don't Be This Guy!

  • Here we see some Conair Air Tractor AT802 Fire Boss amphibian wildfire fighting aircraft in action scooping off of the Lower West Arm of Kootenay Lake on the afternoon of July 19th, 2024 fighting the Eagle Creek Wildfire near Blewett, B.C. You can see a boater getting right in the path of the Air Tractor's as they are scooping water off the lake.
    It's always impressive to see these firefighting planes in action, but please use common sense and stay off the water when they are in action.

      No, they should be talked to by law enforcement. If they do it again then charges should be filed. Most likely it’s just pure ignorance.
      I have had similar experiences with boaters when operating off lakes with a large amphibious aircraft. Jet skiers are the worst. After speaking with some of them. Most of them didn’t see or hear us coming. Sometimes you just have to abort the landing. This is an issue with fire fighting aircraft. I was actually surprised they were operating so close together. There were other boats including a sail boat that has right of way.

    • @geraldmcclintock2567

      Boat was probably not expecting a half dozen planes to cover the entire lake at the same time . Usually planes would stagger a little more and follow similar lines vs spreading out all over the place . My comment comes with very limited experience seeing fire fighting float planes in lesser numbers

    Here at the north end of Kootenay Lake six of those aircraft were flying low over our village, scooping water from the lake then dumping their loads, one after the other on the out of control fire that is threatening our small mountain village (Argenta). Those guys worked for at least an hour. Then the choppers with buckets were dumping loads of fire retardant. Around 3:00 p.m., yesterday and again today (Saturday) the large four engine aircraft (likely he was loading up with retardant in Cranbrook then flying over here) discharged his large load. Yes, hearing those aircraft, roaring just overhead, was a welcome noise because of the life/property saving work they are doing. I've spent the past two days packing belongings and valuables into my vehicle in case we need to evacuate. Pray for rain.

    What would you do ?? Sitting in the middle of the lake fishing, and suddenly 5 aircraft descend on you. They watched the 1st aircraft till it was past them, then moved out of the way of the rest.
    I think they handled it very well. The pilots would have seen them before the scooping run, and if you look carefully all the aircraft were airborne before the boat anyway. Unjustified ridicule of the boaters.

    • @mothmagic1
      @mothmagic1 Месяц назад +1

      Not really those of us familiar with float plane operations are used to boaters being idiots . The wisest course of action would be to let the fire bombers have the lake to themselves. Bear in mind the Beaver/boat collision in Vancouver harbour which is recent enough to still be fresh in people's memory.

    • @TheHDAviation
      @TheHDAviation  Месяц назад +6

      This was the fifth or sixth scooping run by the aircraft, the boat entered the area after knowing the aircraft were working that area and sat there until the aircraft were flying directly at them. And they weren't fishing, they entered that area to watch the planes, in their direct path.
      So I disagree that it was "handled well" and that it is unjustified ridicule.

    • @SwL_Wildcat
      @SwL_Wildcat Месяц назад

      It's all speculation until someone with first hand knowledge comes along. The boat is the stand on vessel, the plane would be the give way vessel, the collision regulations must be followed on the water. Just because they are scooping that doesn't give them carte blanche to ignore the rules. Fire trucks with emergency lights activated can run red lights, but they MUST ensure the intersection is clear before doing so. Shoot that save video from 90 degrees and you will see it's not even close to being a conflict.
      laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/C.R.C.%2C_c._1416/page-1.html
      "(3) For the purposes of these Regulations, every reference to “vessel” shall, except in subsection 3(1) and section 4, be read to include a reference to a seaplane when it is on or over the water."

    • @tomlaurent8520
      @tomlaurent8520 Месяц назад +1

      @@TheHDAviation No, I just stated the boat has the right of way. If there was a collision, the pilot would be at fault because he has to follow the colregs as soon as he touches the water. I did not state it was good idea to sail into an active water scooping operation.
      The regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea (colregs) give a list of precedence of who is the give way vessel and who is the stand on vessel. Every other type of vessel has stand on precedence over a seaplane. And yes, seaplanes are considered vessels subject to the colregs when they touch the water.

    • @MrEricmopar
      @MrEricmopar 25 дней назад

      Except those seaplanes are not normal, they are Emergency Services working a fire. I'm guessing they have the right of way while fighting a fire, the same as you are supposed to pull over for a fire engine, or police car going to an emergency...
