    Coming back to this video to remember what World of Warships was like when the Atlanta was considered over powered. I miss those days. Thanks for keeping up the great work, Gnome Overlord.

    Thanks Jingles for putting together this video. I was transfixed when I saw the letter from Mrs. Sullivan and the response from President Roosevelt. It was so touching because I grew up near Waterloo. My father knew the Sullivan brothers and played with them as a child in the 1930s. You work is greatly appreciated, although I will not be able to share with my father, a WWII Army Air Corp veteren, as he has passed away some years ago. I put my comment here as I did not know how to other wise reach you. May all who read this respect the mothers who suffer most when soldiers fall. May they all one day refuse to send their children to war!

      It could've been a reality if it hadn't been for the reason an aircraft carrier made of ice being conceived, not enough steel. There wasn't enough steel around for the machines that kept the ice cool.

      BoZoiD57 Yeah and also the fact that anti-submarine aircraft had longer ranges than at the start of the war so the unprotected run between protected UK airspace and US/CAN airspace was becoming exponentially smaller, making that mid way runway not as vital. If they really needed it they would have made it happen.

    Jingles, in case you and or other people aren't aware, if you pick up the Humble E3 Bundle Ticket (which is one of those glorious 'pay what you want' bundles) it includes access to the World of Warships Beta, alongside a special bonus.
    Worth pointing out that the access and bonus is only applicable to the NA server for WoWs.

    • @gamersgofirst

      Hail Hydrate so if i but it( i live in the netherlands) i cant play world of warhips?

    • @HailHydrate2
      @HailHydrate2 9 лет назад

      gamersgofirst as long as you register on the .com world of warships site instead of the .eu version.
      Bear in mind your account will be tied to the NA server, so you may need a NA wargaming account.
      The Humble Bundle page has an FAQ with the details.

    • @HailHydrate2
      @HailHydrate2 9 лет назад

      gamersgofirst Yep, you can still play it, you'll just be playing on an american server instead of a European one. Shouldn't be too much difference either way.

    • @LightningSaix
      @LightningSaix 9 лет назад

      gamersgofirst You could play on the American server from where you live with that account, but the ping would be atrocious. If you are desperate to try the game and don't mind the ping, the humble bundle beta key could be worth it, but otherwise you should just wait for Open Beta and EU signups.

      @GrasshopperKelly 8 лет назад

      +Aaror1000 tell that to the #1 and #'s 4 and 5 turrets on Atlanta, they never had a proper gun director ranging hover shots when fired XD and if the #'s 4 and 5 were firing at the same time the gun director would have been facing port or starboard in most cases so one turret would be fringing by eye xD

    • @Aaror1000
      @Aaror1000 8 лет назад +2

      They did have an insufficient number of gun directors, a fact that was not lost on captains of the era. I was just referring to the American-firepower complex in general.

    The Juneau (jew-no) was a sub-class of Atlantas with no depth charge or torpedo armament. This helped with the stability issue of the Atlantas created by piling on extra AA armament.

    Just an add on about the Juneau. According to eyewitnesses chronicled in Neptunes Inferno by James D Hornfischer it suffered a catastrophic magazine detonation, with one of it's dual purpose mounts actually launched into the air by the force of the explosion landing near other american ships.

    Another fun fact about the USS The Sullivans (the second one this time) is that it was actually the target of an Al-Qaeda attack in 2000 as it moored at the port of Aden in Yemen. The plan was to load a boat with explosives, drive alongside the American ship, and blow it up. Fortunately for The Sullivans, the terrorists' plan suffered from "too much gun" as well: their boat actually sank under the weight of all the explosives they packed into it, and The Sullivans sailed away none the wiser. A few months later, Al-Qaeda tried again, this time using less explosives to blow a hole in the side of USS Cole. But thanks to the fact that the terrorists could not use as much explosive to keep their boat from sinking, the Cole's crew were able to contain the damage and keep the ship afloat.

It's worth a visit if you're ever in the area.

    • @LeeNTien
      @LeeNTien 9 лет назад +1

      Chandler Hermansen No, it's different. It's not just an accent of different way of naming things. Quite a lot of US cities and towns were named after places in Europe, or by settlers from Europe. Not English-speaking ones. And they did pronounce their new homes right, in their native languages. But then, after a while, the general Americanization took place, and the original names were lost, and the new (wrong) pronunciations settled. Basically, modern Americans pronounce their non-English-named towns the way uneducated Brits would pronounce a name after seeing it for the first time on a map and trying to read it as if it was written in English. That's why it comes across as.... not right, to certain people. =]

    Jingles I noticed that when you engaged that enemy Atlanta, you were like saying not to know what kind/type of ship it was going to be at 13:14 that you were about to engage because it was still obscured by that island! But if you press and hold the "Alt" key you can not only see the exact range your guns are aiming at (wich btw makes 'ranging' shots completely redundent and no longer necessary),
    While holding the "Alt" key you will also see any enemy ship you target their exact range, name (class) of the ship, their remaining health AND the players name captaining it..EVEN when that ship is still obscured by an island! Only thing one must still know how to do is 'lead' one's shots offcourse. Glad if this bit of info turned out to help you! :)

    Interesting fact:
    When the Atlanta engaged in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the range was point blank. As she was rather early in the American column, Atlanta took quite a bit of fire. This included a Long Lance that practically broke her back. Rapidly firing into the dark, she managed to obliterate an enemy destroyer. After taking a hail of shell hits, her radar and gun directed went out. As she drifted away off Lunga Point, the last target her gun directer was aimed at was less than 400 yards away.

    I got it when it was at 30% off last week-end. Played one game in it and was blown away by it's performance. I died quick because I went with a destroyer on the front, but between the 2 of us we killed 2 DDs, 1 cruiser, and one Battleship. 45k damage and about 300k credit.
    Simply amazing, and saddens me to say but, far more fun than my favorite class of ships, the BBs. Expensive, but well worth it for pure, quick and rewarding fun matches !

    The details of the Juneau's sinking were partially correct; she was actually sunk after the battle, while en route to Espiritu Santu for repairs. She was hit by a sub fired torpedo as stated, but directly in the same spot where she had already been torpedoed earlier during the battle. This explains the rapid sinking.

    I played Navy Field for YEARS. From the time it started beta until about a year after public release. The Atlanta was my favorite ship. When I started, the Atlanta was the single most hated light cruiser in the game due to its limited firing arcs and its smaller caliber guns. I almost single-handedly turned it into the single most respected and feared cruiser in the game. Can't wait to be able to play this game and sail her again. And just as an aside... I live in JUNEAU, Alaska, for which the USS Juneau was named. The correct pronunciation is "joono" not zheno :)
    Again, can't wait to meet you ingame :)

    Dammit Jingles, you beat my record by 29 hits! My record is 333 hits with my Atlanta (sunk 4 ships, 2 of which were destroyers who hung around too long) ;)

    the radio proximity fuse is what made American ships so deadly in AA, it was so guarded that they refused to use it in Europe until close to the end there. There was a good documentary i saw on it but damned if i can find it to post a link here

    As a direct result of the Sullivan brothers my father and his three brothers all chose different services when they signed up ( all four signing on the same day was a big deal back then, still is for the survivors of our family). Uncle George was a marine in Europe, My uncle Johnny army aircorps also in Europe, uncle Buddy was pure infantry ground pounder again in Europe, and my dad went to the navy ithe Pacific, he wanted better food. Thanks for bringing up the history once again Jingles, it made me think back to my own upbringing.

      ***** The Mighty Jingles Whenever you see an American word that's spelled weird, just assume the pronunciation is much simpler than you'd think.
      I should know. I live in a town called Grand Blanc, which is French, but the name is now pronounced exactly like you'd expect Americans to pronounce it, given time. (Grand Blank) You can always tell if a person is from Grand Blanc by the way they pronounce its name.

      That sounds like a good rule of thumb. I am sure that there are plenty of place names in the UK that I would have a embarrassing time pronouncing.

    • @blaster112

      It is a good ship provided you are close to the enemy (or further away and behind an island). The radar made this ship even better (smoke would be preferred though). It doesn't face to well against BBs up close but yeah. I would say it's a fun ship but you have to decide wether it's worth the money. (if you do buy it we can div up if you like).
