- Hi RUclipsrs. Here is a demo of newly arrived Gibson ES-350 ND from 1955. It's a wonderful instrument, both in terms of tone, look and playability. It's a full body (17 inches at lower bout) equipped with 2 P90s.
As for all ES 350 (except special orders) it's a laminated tabletop.
Tuned played is "Old Folks". I've used a wonderfull Aebersold bactrack from Vol. 114 "Good Time".
Gear used: Amp is a Fender Deluxe Reissue from 2016. Strings used are Tomastik Infeld 12"'-50" (flatwound). Mike for registration is a Shure SM57 placed right in front of the amp. I've used the neck microphone thoughout the tune, tone knob set at 3.
Cheers.
NB: I've had to edit the soundtrack during my last chorus since the first take had sound quirks (not enough RAM in my computer...). So I've done a second take during this short part, strictly sticking to the notes I've played first, and replaced the first part with that. The idea is to keep the mood and preserve good sound quality. You will probably won't notice it unless you search for it... Видеоклипы
You are doing a public service to remind us all about the beauty of this style of guitar playing. Your “jobs” are each note or cluster of notes that you play. Each one is worth 10 or 15 shredded out by someone who’s not listening. You are definitely listening! And the fact that you are using such lovely old ladies to make your sound is a wonderful, wonderful thing too. I have a few of those myself.
Thanks Jon! These old ladies definitly have some mojo inside. Enjoy these soulful instruments!
Love that sound and the split parallel inlays on a vintage Gibson! 👍
This is my kind of guitar, I love P90s
What fabulous condition that guitar is in, amazing.
Great playing also.
Thanks for posting.
Really delightful. Miss these videos from Fred
I'll be back ;)
Outstanding ‼️🎼🎸🎶😍
This is so inspiring to watch. You are such a elegant and masterful player. Much respect and joy! New fan here.
ooooh, love the sound of P90s, I know a great local jazz musician who plays a late 50s 175 with one P90 [incidentally this guy met in San Francisco Wes in his [Wes'] hotel room and Wes gave him some original reel to reel tapes Wes made of himself!!!!!]
Hi Russell. Thank you for the great story. These first generation 175 are incredibly good.
just WOW! ... for guitar, sound and PLAYING !
Lovely playing, and man have you got some great guitars!
beautiful guitar and sound
Gosh, what a lovely touch and nice playfull song! Well done and great sound on those p90
FANTASTIC !!!
1 of my favorite all time tunes! Thank you Fred!
I also dig for this standard ;)
Hats off to you, sir. Beautiful playing. Envy.
Thank you.
Beautiful playing Fred
Thank you !
Magnificent tone
Thanks
Lovely playing, Fred! There's something so warm and 'personable' about the P90 sound!
Hey Mark. Wise choice! I love single coil pick ups too and a good P90 is divine. Cheers.
Incredible :-)
Love that tune. Not played nearly enough. Thanks
what a great P90 tone!
Thanks James. There's nothing to equal an old P90 except a vintage Charlie Christian microphone.
On a encore fait des folies! Très agréable à écouter entre 2 cs
Hello Karim. Et oui...Le son est à tomber par terre et le look est à l'égal su son. Au plaisir de te revoir (on devrait jouer les 26 ou 27 sept avec JM). Amicalement.
tiens moi au courant, à bientôt

It's gorgeous - I'm fortunate to own a 355 (albeit a more recent re-issue). It does look odd seeing your one without the pickguard and no binding/ornamentation around the edges. Wonderful tone and playing BTW - thank you!
Hi Russ. Thanks for passing by. There is binding on this model but it has nicely aged into a yellowish color making it hard to see on this video. Cheers.
Thanks for responding - I watched again and could now see the binding on the still at the beginning. Best wishes
I played a 1950's Gibson with a P-90 once at a recording studio in my town. The tone had so much resonance due to the aged solid spruce top. The character of the acoustic sound came right through the pickup! I believe that there is a resonance that happens to some solid tone wood instruments with age that can't be replicated with new instruments, but this was the first time I heard it in the amplified sound. Do you find this to be true with your carved top electric Gibsons? I have played a 1930's Gibson flat top acoustic that had the same sort of resonance. I don't play many antique guitars, but I have noticed this same loudness and definition of tone with my 1920's Martin mandolin also.
Hey Scott. Thanks for your comments. Actually you are asking a difficult question about the tone of a vintage guitar. My personal background tends to tell me that such great tone can also be obtained from a more recent guitar. For that you need to have a guitar crafted by a talented luthier. After a couple of years of intensive playing, I would say from two to four years, such a tone is possible to get. Cheers.
Thanks for responding! I don't have enough experience with older guitars, and I thought if anybody could give an informed opinion, it would be you! ;) Of course I'm a huge fan of your videos, having recently discovered them here.
Very nice. How would you compare the p90s to your CC models?
Nathaniel Cole Hi Nathaniel. Thanks for your message. It's a difficult question because there are several structural elements that diverge between this ES350 and my CC guitars. However, the P90 gives undoutbly a sound with more high ends and less medium range. In any case it's a premium guitar with a great jazz sound.
Great playing, love the guitar. Do you sell them or keep them to play?
Thanks PG. Nothing to sale as for now. Best and take care.
Hey, Do you give online lessons?
Hey Keith. Thanks for asking but no, I do not. Cheers.
