Tim sounds like a win-win-win for you and the truck. Made about the same money, ran less miles, less fuel burned, less wear and tear on the truck and you were home quite a bit. I like that it's totally awesome, good stuff.

First off it's good to see you got over the cold and feeling better. It's good to see a good hard working guy being successful. You nailed it on risk. I have been seeing wreck after wreck in the snow and ice. Was very happy to get a run to California. Best wishes for continued success and safe travels my friend.

This guy as did I had this trucking thing down. I ran my own for 28 years. Did damn good. I'm now retired at 54 and I've been retired for at least 6 years. I tried driving for a company running to Fresno from Irwindale, starting from San Bernardino. But making that legal on log books was getting impossible with a truck governed at 54.6 and being in traffic coming home and even backwards out of Hanford waiting 5 and 6 hours to load and unload. This all being done in a day cab Peterbilt.

FYI to anyone thinking about making the leap . . .The insurance companies have a covenant with carriers which governs how long an owner-operator needs to be established before they can haul loads.
Commercial truck insurance these days, for a number of reasons, is costly, and if you are new, for underwriting purposes, because when starting out, a new company doesn't have a three year history, you are considered risky, and premiums are based on units of exposure or risk.
Insurance costs will vary from state to state because insurance companies are licensed by individual states, and some insurance companies do not want to compete in every state.

Tim, being able to operate and waiting on that check to come in can drive one to drink. An absolute on having funds in the bank to carry over. We've been doing without for about 3 weeks. We are leased to a company, who primarily, hauls construction equipment for the railroad. It's been pretty slow this quarter, so, no freight to haul on a consistent level. I pull a Landoll and transport 40' and 20' containers all over the West. Since it's been slow, I loaned myself to our Van Division. So, my point is, as a leased owner operator, PATIENCE is paramount and that funding sitting in the bank is a lifesaver. You mentioned all of your insurances only totaling and extra $400. That is only about a $0.04 increase in expense against a $0.50 increase in revenue. Good Job!

Own authority looks like a no brainer. I think the rates need to be better overall in general. If you own truck AND trailer. Should be making 1.85+/per mile without authority, and should be getting another .25/per mile for your own authority. Wonder if the rates will ever get better or not.

Hi Tim, question: would you recommend a new O/O such as myself to lease on with Landstar first, to get the hang of self dispatching, before taking the leap into own authority? I bought my dad's rig a year ago and have been leased on to a small mom and pop flatbed outfit. In that year I have learned a lot about being an O/O and have also paid my truck off, now I feel like moving forward with my career.

Good morning sir I have a quick question I have enough money saved up to get my own authority, was thinking about leasing on to a company like landstar but due to my driving record unfortunately they wouldn’t accept me. Besides a high insurance rate. Will I run into obstacles not so much as getting my own authority but pulling for carriers under my authority due to my driving record?

I'm not begrudging your choice to go it alone. You think it's worth it and more power to you for doing so! I've never been in a truck... I push buttons on a computer for a living... I am totally impressed with the way that professional drivers like yourself can handle the rigs. Especially backing into the little stalls at every depot you visit. I am also the guy that bought all the lighting for my band and I really like how you are tricking out your ride. Good luck, sir! I enjoy your channel.

I hope you keep on winning in the trucking industry on your own. It's tough but it can be done. People just need to watch what they are doing. Not run out & spend all that money they are making. Got to be conservative cause there is always that rainy day. Don't ever forget Murphy's law cause it's always lurking in the shadows. Hopefully in todays trucking world there's not a lot of those crooked brokers that would try to beat you out of your money. Just keep your eyes on them. Best of luck to you.
