    The most surprising thing about this review is seeing that the Artisan looks nothing like I imagined him.
    "I mean, LOOK AT IT!" Indeed, that is impressive.
    Scaled down, that Roman bust could make a great Ultramarine character head.

    Having talked to someone who is in 3D scan and design sector (essentially 3D taking scans and then fixing them for use in CGI etc.) the Revopoint mini is the first step in getting an 'at home' scanner that can produce detailed scans of miniatures. To compared it to Resin printers, we're currently at the stage where the only ones available for 'at home' use were the Formlabs 3D printers back when those cost £4000 and were more designed for small businesses to prototype quickly instead of personal usage.
    Give it another 8ish years and if we see the same progress we saw with 3D printers where the quality went up and the price went down with companies like Elegoo and Anycubic competing with each other and we would probably see highly detailed mini-scanners hit the market with closer to plug and play functionality. The main thing holding back 3D scanners currently is less the hardware and more the software involved.
    So yeah Games Workshop don't have anything to worry about with people scanning and then 3D printing their miniatures just yet, give it another 10 years and we'll have 3D printers that have ease of use plus highly detailed screens for around £400 and 3D scanners with detailed enough scans for about the same price. £800 may seem like a lot but considering a 2000 point Ork army can easily set you back that.
    Though personally you won't see GW collapse overnight as there are many people from their casual audience that don't want to take up 3D printing and would rather just buy, glue and paint figures and of course the hardcore official tournament players might not be 3D printing armies for fears of getting banned (though 10 years from now it might be impossible to tell the difference between a scanned 3D printed Marine and a plastic one once fully painted beyond the weight).

      Great analysis and couldn't agree more about this being in its infancy for at home use. I would say I think there may be less general at home use for scanners than there would b3 for 3D printers but I can see prices reducing and the quality increasing in the future for sure.

      @@ArtisansofVaul The interesting thing is they won't be 'designed' for miniature use. I think that'll be a nice byproduct. The main market for these currently is probably Jewelry design people who would use these to make detailed 3D scans of their 'masters' and then resin printing them for mould making purposes.
      There are scanners that can produce that level of detail already on the market but you're looking at £10,000+ and are definitely designed for businesses (plus they bulky and require good knowledge to use, not to mention professional clean up afterwards).
      Still it's definitely an interesting field to watch and we're right on the cusp of it.

      @@luketfer Yeah, jewellery and maybe small scale part reproduction (maybe antique restoration) I would guess. I wouldn't be surprised if instead of a single scanner they turned into something you put the thing into a rotating table and there are multiple scanners for smaller parts. Maybe they already exist.

    Pretty impressive what this scanner is capable of. I'm building in even smaller scales with even smaller details. So that does'nt seem to be an option for me.
    But as I'm rebuilding real word tanks and guns this reminded me of something I wanted to take a look at for ages...
    That being said... I'm off now for a wonderful yourney through the RUclips-rabbithole about "how to start at photogrammetry" 🤪

    Thank you for this, been waiting to see a proper, fresh to the scanning process review. This is starting to look like a serious contender for me.
    What would be the possibility of you doing a follow-up video in a month or so, after you've had a bit of practice with it and got your settings dialled in?

      I also need to give you major kudos for you Blender series. I was very nervous of blender to begin with, coming more from a Fusion 360 & 3DS Max background but your tutorials have helped me overcome the fear of it and it's my go-to software now. I like how you break everything down to it's basics and that you're geared towards printing. Keep it up.

    Huh. Instead of a scawny Nerd with optional Glasses, i get Rock'n Roll Jesus on Display lul🤘
    The bust looks really good. The body really needs some touch ups but i didn't expect the Scanner to pick up the Details as they are on the Mini anyway.
    Nice review tho. But a 3D Scanner is nothing for me.

    I remember this Kickstarter. I looked in to it and came to the decision it was not good enough for what I wanted to do. It looks like I was wrong. That is way more impressive than I was expecting. Though still too expencive for me now. Especially considering I have exactly one project for it. Future permitting though, might try getting one.

      Admittedly at the time I was unsure. It was only having a bit of luck on a lottery ticket that covered about 1/3rd of the cost made me go for it. I'm glad I did now as I keep thinking of things I can use it for I wouldn't have bothered trying previously as it would have been too much hassle to measure up.

    Really cool video! I wasn't expecting an in box review but I recall you put yourself onto the title card for a video on tips to avoid rage quitting Blender, so I can't say I was as shocked as other viewers 🤣🤣 anyway I think it would be great to see a follow up in a few months after a few more scans using all the lessons learned like an ideal studio background and merging multiple scans. I wonder if tricking the camera by giving the white mini a dark panel line wash.. 🤔 Haha but yeah, as you said you don't need this to directly copy existing minis. And to that point, I think it would be cool seeing some videos down the road of how you use these scans in your workflow. I imagine they have too many artifacts or are too soft to be used as boolean cutters. But it would be cool to see them incorporated. I think the best use of something like this for the 28-32mm hobby in terms of strictly printing would be to scan objects anywhere from 1/1 down to maybe 1/24 scale and then scale that mesh down further to an appropriate miniature scale. Even scanning 28-32mm minis and printing out a massive hoard at 15mm would make sense with that level of detail.

      Great ideas. It had been mentioned to do a follow up video so I will for sure. I'd also been considering panel lining as well, it may cause more problems (I can explain that in the video) but it could also help the software recognise features so its weapons worth trying and reporting back on. 👍🏻😁

      @@android4cg The biggest issue will be that parts are reflective and I don't have the spray to turn it white and it not damage it.

    Hi, Thanks for this unboxing video. I was also looking at getting this and am happy to hear your thoughts on it. I am very curious to know what is the smallest item you have scanned and if the detail was picked up. I am looking at using it to scan hard to find or one off bits for my dark future prime wolf army. Keep up the great work.

      I've been working on how to get better scans but I'm currently waiting on some pure white spray to be delivered to see if that helps more than the off white I've been using. I'm going to do a video of tips when I have been through some more trials. But so far I think anything infantry sized or smaller for 28mm isn't going to work to just scan and print, I think you'd have to use it as a base and them model over it to get sharp details. Or of you found something larger and shrunk it to 28mm that would work, like a dog skull for wolf skulls/etc

    the reason these people had bad scans is because they didn't adjust the exposure properly. the best way is to scan multiple passes in different exposures to get every detail that's dark or bright the scanner ignores blown out areas anyways

    Not being familiar, I was imagining this to cost about half of what the actual price is. Put in perspective it is more than twice the cost of a decent resin printer that seems like a far more complex piece of kit. I mean I would have an occasional use for something like this but at that price you'd have to be using it almost constantly to justify.

      I can't disagree with anything you've said. I think the main difference has been mentioned in another comment by a viewer, the things that go into making a 3D printer are all very "standard" kit that are available for various uses (like the screen is just an 4k or 8k screen on a printer) while this uses more specialised parts which ups the price. However knowing that doesn't make it any cheaper for the consumer and I see a lot less people buying/having use for this compared to a printrr

    At my library I get asked to replicate things like doorknobs or, most recently, a bracket clip on a dollhouse. I wasn’t impressed with Amazon quality 3D scanners, would recommend this for us if I can get the funding?

      For a door knob I think it would be perfect, that sort of size seems to do well from the size of the bust. For the clip I don't know, but I think the scan would make replicating it in Blender so much easier if that is what was needed.

    You really want at least twice the resolution of scanning than what you will be printing, below that and details can skip between the scanning "layers" and be missed. This technology is going to become the hot new topic very quickly. Resin printing has probably hit a peak, or at least a plateau in terms of detail, 8K mini resin printers offer essentially the same quality of finish as injection moulded parts. We'll continue to get step improvements such as auto vat filling, and maybe some day: non toxic resin, but there comes a point when a home 3D printer doesn't need more detail and the progress goes another road.

      Yeah, I think we will get the quality of 8k mini on larger printers possible (so 16k if double the size) or larger DLP printers, whatever technology wins they race.

      @@ArtisansofVaul I think that might take a while though. The screens we are using are generally repurposed phone and tablet screens and I'm not sure the 3D printer market has the numbers to drive development on it's own. Tablet makers probably aren't looking to make a 16K 10" display. Home DLP though seems to be coming of age and would scale far easier, so that might be the answer.

      I think the big one that will drive Resin printer uptake into the strasophere is definitely non-toxic resin. Currently it's still way too dangerous for one to just sit in your home if you have kids/a small flat with nowhere to vent the fumes. Once literally everyone can have one without major safety conscerns, it'll boost the uptake.
      There have been strides forward in getting close to non-toxic resin but, as you said, it's still a ways off, probably.
      Once you get that and with an easy 'plug and play' style (so autosupports just working instead of requiring fiddling) I could see 3D printing hit the next stage but as it stands now, we've hit that plateau where anything above 8k screens offers very minimal benefit for a massive cost.

    Scan a denture top(palatal) and bottom (intaglio) sides......See if software stitches the together as on denture. Then I would be sold

    I purchased this scanner a few weeks ago. It does not work well at all. I have tried many of the techniques suggested and still cannot get a good scan with the items I want to scan. It does well on the sample bust. I believe the the cause is the firmware and the post scan software. I want a simple solution, not one that takes hours to get a mediocre output. Do not buy.

      @@ArtisansofVaul I just want folks to know. At the 15 min point in your video you mention that this scanner will never be perfect and that it works for what you want it to do. My problem is that Revopoint advertises this scanner as suitable for scanning dental molds (not my field) so I expect that level of detail. I don’t think anyone would be happy getting dental work made with this scanner. Revopoint set the bar where they did, they should produce a scanner that lives up to that. I may not have said it, but I think this is a problem with the software and firmware since good scans can be made with certain objects. I am trying to scan a simple nylon bevel gear with mixed results. Best I could get was a mediocre scan and I could not repeat it.

    Actually.... if revopoint didnt absolutely suck at writing software it WOULD scan all the detail. I built an openscan mini and it does more with JUST photogrammetry than my revopoint mini 2, my miraco, OR (obviously) my old pop2. i also have a creality lizard but....its not any better. literally... just an arducam 16mp and it scans better with no structured light, no nothing, and it got nearly perfect details instead of the meshblob that revopoint scans are. If they programmed in a photogrammetry feature or made it open to use like...meshmixer or something similar it would actually WORK like its supposed to. I should mention that i've even got the computer controlled turntable so it can get KNOWN angles....but it doesnt...its just a fancy little toy... *sigh* they could do SO much with the hardware they have.

      That feels a bit unfair as I can't think of any other 3d scanning software that uses both some form of light like IR or blue light and photogrammetry at the same time. Don't get me wrong, if they did it would be amazing (in fact it would be completely market leading if they did) but this is a completely different form of processing and interpretation.

      That's incredibly frustrating. I haven't had that happen at all to be able to help I'm afraid. Have you contacted their customer services? I had one issue and contacted them online and they were fantastic (I was honestly surprised at how good they were).

      @@ArtisansofVaul I think if I was closer to your level of using Blender (just learning to use it) I think I might have regretted not backing it, but I'm OK with my decision still. I will be curios if they do another KS with their next iteration of scanner, just have to wait and see if they do
