YOUR EXPLANATION HELPED ME A LOT!! In the least offensive way possible, you made me realize that in order to understand stressed/unstressed syllables you need to talk in a "posh" voice, a very proper English. Thank you for this!
Step 1: find a word with more than 1 syllable Step 2: Pronounce the word loud as you normally would except you do it slower. Step 3: notice which syllable where you pitch and volume goes up. That syllable is the stressed one.
I'm having trouble understanding how to figure out if a syllable is stressed or unstressed. You, however, do this so effortlessly! Do you have any tricks?
This video was very helpful! I'm studying to become an engineer, but my mom is making me take poetry. Something about becoming more cultured, I don't know. Anyway, thanks. :)
i was trying to learn grammar of poetry and . . . . . this was the first video that actually made sense to me . . . even a 5 year old can learn from this cute lady . . . thanks for being so ecstatic :)
i never comment on youtube videos but why did you talk like that during the video jesus christ also thank you very much, i found I'm curiously unable to perform scansion well and you helped me immensely.
How do you decide that Lucy in the Sky (the Beatles song) is dactylic tetrameter and not dactylic octameter? The decision about what to define as a line seems arbitrary. Couldn't all of "Picture yourself on a boat on a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies" be considered a single line?

You wouldn't need to use videos in your class if you were better educated, Kate. Whatever you learned here is something you should know as a teacher, and something you should be able to teach without help.
Hi, I knew iamb, trochee, feminine rhyme etc., but a little bit confused about marking stressed and unstressed syllables. My doubt is should we mark syllables as stressed and unstressed as per dictionary or as per the way we read it ?
@akamola15 There's a great site to use for practicing scansion called "For Better, For Verse" created I think by the University of Virginia. It's interactive and has easy, medium, and difficult poems so you can challenge yourself as you become more adept.
Thankyou so much! This is really helpful but just a tip for future video's, could you please put the camera on a tripod looking down at what you're explaining so that it doesn't move so much. :)
Needed to know this information, but after listening to her over-emphasized sarcastic tone of voice for 8 minutes, I hit my head on a wall and forgot it all.
It seems so easy.... until I open a book and try it. In my mind, I can't tell which I should stress and which I do not. I guess it all comes down to practicing.
Put your hand in your chin and your elbow on a table, read outloud and the syllables that make your chin press more into your palms are the stressed ones
I don't get the reason for all those hate comments :v anyway THANK YOU! It helped a lot! We're sharing this video in class at uni :) it's really helpful!!
Holy hell, this video helped me immensely!!! I'm learning about poems in my 19th Century Russian Literature class, and I was rather lost when I took a quiz on it. Thank you so much for the help!!
You said that " i " pronoun is unstressed in " i want to go to Italy .... " then later you said that it's stressed in " shall i compare thee to.... " . Could you explain this point please !
Trouble is demonstrated by 42lullaby's first pronunciation of the name Elaine; She stresses the first syllable. Contemporary English resists fixed stressed patterns.

Can you explain how to identify if it's stressed or unstressed
Stressed is the more main, loud part of the word, you are *stressing* your mouth on the stress.
Pizza
Pee tsa
(Hard) (Soft)
Step 1: find a word with more than 1 syllable
Step 2: Pronounce the word loud as you normally would except you do it slower.
Step 3: notice which syllable where you pitch and volume goes up.
That syllable is the stressed one.
Thank you so much for the video! I'm so glad that you didn't delete such a useful and cheerful tutorial video!
I'm having trouble understanding how to figure out if a syllable is stressed or unstressed. You, however, do this so effortlessly! Do you have any tricks?
+John Parks Same! My professor said to read it out loud, and you should be able to tell by how you speak, but that hasn't helped me.
+John Parks what our teacher told us is like its always unstressed to stressed in like idek lol
@@samanthaleanne3776 .. that's so true

THIS VIDEO IS A LIFESAVER. THANK YOU
Well done! You made it very easy to learn the basics. I’ve never been trained to read poetry so this is helpful
The poet asked his feet which was stressed
and then unstressed. Then one of them replied:
I am.
uhm, I guess this is a humour but I failed to understand it :D can you explain :))
@@krelfsn hes stressed...
Elif Sena Kara “I am” sounds like “iamb” which has one unstressed and one stressed syllable.
@@lekturimeeditori1082 Sure. That's a fair point, but if I pronounce it that way the pun doesn't work.
Dan Yes! But I thought Elif said that he/she didn’t get the joke.
Half the time I think the unstressed syllable actually sounds more stressed than the stressed syllable :( damn my ears
Thanks so much I will leave a like. You have saved me on my poetry assignment.
Amazing. Thank you so much
Thank you so much, 1 hour left until my exam starts in English Literature and I just started to learn. Your video helped so much.

Great video, but the fake accent and shaky camera are distracting, so I don't know if I will be using it in my class.

I can't identify the stressed or unstressed... it just doesn't come naturally to me.

I would like to point out how that could be possible to put ones hand inside his chin?

All right you really need to try to talk a little more stuck up. Might be tough but do it for us.
Poor camera although I like the not common examples.

Though funny stressing the syllables...
What to you call it when it has no rhythm?

What if the no.per lines were not equal?
