As a maladaptive daydreamer myself I think the worst thing about it is that you don’t WANT to stop it. So whenever I sought help, I wanted them to make me not want to do it. To help me get rid of the urge. it might sound absolutely insane. But the first time I could ever stop wanting to do it, to control the urge was when I fasted for 20 days straight. It felt like a miracle. I even kept putting myself in situations that would trigger my daydreaming and the urge didn’t come. And it lasted for long. I think it’s vital to be kind to yourself if you’re trying to stop daydreaming. Because for me it’s always been a defense mechanism. I honestly felt sad and bored for the first time in my life at the age of 22 when I first tried to stop daydreaming. And those feelings that are normal to other people felt extreme. So be kind to yourself and believe that you can overcome the urge. Maybe not by force though :)) it’s important to discover why you started doing it in the first place and try to work on that.

that's because you have dopamine depletion. Daydreaming consumes all you dopamine stock if you do it non stop. I invite you to watch some video youtube that gives some tricks in how to get back your dopamine level and sensitivity (cold shower, and so on). The main exercice I use myself is meditation mindfullness without thinking (lie on your bed, room with light, keep your body warm - you dont want to sleep - close your eyes, always breath slow and deeply, count from 1 to 9 in loop to prevent your mind going elsewhere for each breathing, move your eyes top and bottom for each breathing also to stop your visual imagination to trigger) and tries to do that for 20mn. Sometimes daydreaming will still happen and if you are like me and you realize only afterward, dont stress over hit and just focus back on counting and breathing, and everything else for the rest of the time (20mn is plenty enough).
After some sessions, you may feel emptyness after because daydreaming doesn't trigger anymore and it can be a little depressive. At that moment, you need to make you think about all the positive consequences of the task you planned to do after the session (work, study, things you usually run away from because it doesn't give you enough pleasure).
Due to having dopamine once again, you will this time have motivation to do that task.

When ever u feel like u r doing daydreaming again or speaking in ur head follow this step
    1) listen 3 sound in ur surrounding ( vehicle / people / or anything u can hear
    2) sing a song in ur head when u cant stop thinking or when u feel like u r ruminating about past events or future worry and can't stop thinking then sing a song in ur head just do it right now u will believe it
    3) look at 3 things and tell in ur mind what color are they
    4) don't try not to think about daydreaming or avoiding it because if u try it will get more harder when u feel u can't get rid of unwanted thought just accept that u can't control everything that pops in your mind just accept it and follow the above given steps
    5) and the only way to stop daydreaming is get rid of ur social media forever and RUclips and everything or if you can't then make sure to use it as minimum as u can don't get into this fake world of social media because in reality u r all alone watching laughing and fantasizing about the people u see on screen and if u pause for a second and look at ur surrounding u will realize that ur all by yourself that's sad but true

I think I started maladaptive daydreaming around 2nd or 3rd grade and I am 21 years old now. It was because my immediate family would make fun of me for not really being a stereotype of a black woman. I was a shy, quiet, introverted kid and at some point in my life, I truly believed something was wrong with me (I don't believe that now). I would daydream about traveling to another dimension through a portal, living on an island, or living in space and I realized looking back that I wanted to get away and stay away from my family. I really believed that one day I'd live on an island far away from civilization just so that no one could hurt me again and I could live in my fantasy world. I would also dream about learning martial arts so I can defend myself and be strong because I was a skinny and small black girl and "apparently" black women are supposed to be strong and deal with pain, but I would cry and run away from my problems through daydreaming. I have missed out on a lot of things in life, I may be 21 and still young but I still find myself wanting to do nothing, but listen to music to cure my dopamine. It's hard and meditating is hard at first but I found out it takes 8 weeks (56 days) to get a clear mindset through meditating and I'm gonna start. The hardest part is starting I do believe that maladaptive daydreaming kinda protected me as a child but I don't need it anymore.

I know I need to get out my comfort zone but I feel like I’m doing it for someone else and not me. I really do think there’s something wrong with me, but I also think my dopamine level has depleted in some way.. I used to read many books, draw, listen to classical music or music that have meanings behind words but here I am now.

My daydreaming habit started off when I was in 4th standard , I have been imagining stuff like everything totally opposite of my own reality .
I have made characters of my own self and these characters have evolved since then,
My characters include me as a whole different person (appearance wise and personality wise) my parents are different people ( they love me as what I am in my daydreams ) my siblings are cool infact I am always centre of attraction
the normal people includes all kind of actors I see in clips of movies and start liking
I have a person who loves me
I have friends who are always there
Totally opposite of what I actually am and my whole situation
I spend all the time daydreaming, I mean 24 hours except of ig 2 to 3 hours I am in reality that to I force myself to stay in reality
But I can not stop this maladaptive daydreaming, it hurts otherwise, I feel so awkward of my own self and I really don’t like myself
My thoughts become full of negativity when I stop daydreaming ( my daydreams are like full of happiness, positivity and joy) in reality my environment is quite toxic
Be it family only , they are very toxic , parents do fight alot verbally, they are strict, dad has anger issues and my mum wants what she wants , no friends
Never had anyone to talk to since I was a kid
People consider me as introvert but I am not one
I just can not talk to people I am not confident enough
I used to had alot of goals in life, now I don't
I don't know what I am doing , I have my exams but I am not studying infact my entrance exams for college are nearing but I just don't know why I am not doing anything to achieve my goals
It is just me either sleeping, daydreaming all the time or using phone
Actually when I am using phone then also I am talking to the characters in my head at that time to , when I go to sleep I daydream until I fall asleep
I think I am just escaping
At this point I don't know what should I do

I can totally relate to you. I started daydreaming when I was in 7th and till today can't stop all the mind chatter despite I badly want to as due to this my productivity has become nile. I feel so exhausted by the end of the day that I started having terrible headaches almost every day. I started daydreaming as I have no one to talk to share my thoughts with and if I ever tend to talk to my parents all I get in response was yelling, have to say that they were not very supportive and this made my situation even worst. For me daydreaming is an escape from reality. Everything around me I just some how connect that to my imaginary story for the sake of happiness I just don't know why I am writing all this in your comment below but just felt like sharing this. This is the worst thing that had ever happened to me as all of this dreaming stuff is not in my hands I tried to get out of this but now I just can't and don't even know how I will ever be able to live in the reality.

I feel like if you are a maladaptive daydreamer, you can’t stop it, because it’s like a way of thinking, but try and get EVERYTHING you want so you don’t procrastinate for hours and hours about that thing. For me, it’s impossible to just keep my brain just…blank, and even if I try it will last less than 2 minutes. So what I like to do, is Try to turn your dreams into reality. I feel like what I wanted was that I was just not happy in general, and now I think I’m more in touch with my friends and family and im now pretty happy, so I don’t daydream as much. Sure, I still procrastinate about alot of things, but I don’t daydream for hours and hours and dedicate my life to it. So to everyone out there still trying to get out of the habit, good luck. I know you can do it :)

I know everyone has a different “version” of it, but my personal issue was music and fantasizing since the age of 11. I stopped maladaptive daydreaming when I cut my earphone wires and I forced myself to live without them (and music). I would only listen to music in the car during that time, and my life genuinely drastically improved after some weeks had passed. I fell back into the habit of listening to music and pacing back and forth recently, but living without it was a much better experience: you will miss your fantasies at first, but that is only until you adapt and it will become normal very fast. I started appreciating music and life so much more when I did not have ear- or headphones; I even “healed” from my depression after months had passed, because I started living more being myself! I wasn’t living in my head and fantasies any longer, and I became so productive doing that, because pacing back and forth in my home and fantasizing didn’t take up half of my day anymore. I know cutting up the wires feels very extreme, but trust me when I say that only then you will notice how addicted you were: I literally had to go through withdrawals, but when I noticed how my depression had faded and that I suddenly had new hope for my life and its experiences, it changed me a lot.
I also quit all social media and started playing music on my record player during that time, and I just enjoyed life and music so much more. So, even if you adore music and / or singing like I do, know that having an unhealthy relationship with music and fantasizing isn’t exactly what “loving music” or “being creative” translates to.
Lastly, you are not harming yourself. However, you could be wasting your time and your potential if you become addicated: I realized that when I quit, and healing from this has pretty much caused me to become the person I always fantasized about being, charming and confident. Because, instead of dreaming about it all day long: I became that person through actually doing.

I am a banking aspirant, so when I was doing maths, I imagined in my mind that a student was sitting in front of me and I was explaining quant to him, so in my imagination, the student would ask questions and I would answer them, so it was my first time to read like that. At first I felt very good, then after a few days I noticed that the imaginary student I was teaching could not understand me as if he was a separate person of his own whom I could not control. I couldn't understand my imaginary student as if he didn't want to understand, gradually this shows up in different things I keep doing maladaptive daydreaming which I know is not true I also get stuck in the imaginary world, sometimes I daydream that someone misunderstands me in the bus He is arguing with me and I can't make him understand that it's not my fault. Then more daydreaming like the police have arrested me for no reason and I can't convince them or talk to them. Now I feel like my brain is training me how to talk to someone. I kept quarreling with someone in my daydreaming. forgive me for my bad English. 😞

I know. Make up things that terrify me, or make me mad. My body reacts as if it's all really happening - which is not good. 😟
The other day I was getting upset and I suddenly had this self-awareness "Hey these people don't even exist!"
First time I've ever managed to extract myself from it. Been maladaptive daydreaming since I was 8.

Great video! I like this short format but I also hope you make an in depth video on mindfulness specifically for MD. Explaining exactly which mindfulness techniques help and which books you've read etc. I also found that wearing acupuncture slippers on your feet helps a lot. The needles on the slippers are uncomfortable but that constant discomfort helps a lot with grounding, so I can't pace and get absorbed like I used to. I still struggle so much with reading and studying. I would really appreciate if you could share your knowledge on how to study with MD too. Cheers

My daydreams have actually been remembering things I experienced as a child and trying to make sense of the parts that do, and accepting tha some things don't make sense and some people just do some really messed up things.
They used to be largely escapism and unproductive, but I've managed to turn them into self therapy sessions. I think this is why we have the coping mechanism in the first place, to make sense of what does and accept what does not.
I've managed to cone to terms with a lot of childhood trauma. Certainly didn't fix any of it, but it allowed me to see it for what it was and understand that none of the messed up stuff had anything to do with me besides being the target.
I do admit though it can be a bit of a problem because I'll get locked into these cycles sometimes......

I keep reading that most of these daydreams are positive but what if they aren’t, they are “preparing” you for things that could happen. For example I am lost in the day-nightmare because I am worried something is have done in real life will cause something negative in my life so I am preparing for all the different possibilities

Guys I'm also a maladaptive daydreamer what I imagine is all these:
I don't know why but i always go for attention i want attention in my social life that's why I daydream too and i daydream that all my friends in my school are sitting together with me and watching my imaginary story which I created in my mind like my imaginary friends family and imaginary me.
In reality I have quite good friends and a supportive family but my parents hate each other they don't even talk to each other I feel this very bad and plus I also have OCD which makes it more bad. I don't want any attention in my life but I want freedom from this rubbish in my mind i dont care if i have true friends in my life or not but I want the real me whether good or bad not the imaginary me..
Guys we should now try to end our suffering we all imagine ourself being a different person bcz we don't like our real personality but first of all try to make yourself understand that who ever you are you are good.i have seen that in today's sociaty most of the people think that they are selfish and jealous of others it's okay we all are jealous of each other its nothing bad being a little selfish and jealous is a part if human nature you know what i always thought having a online group of people like me what your point on this??..

Hello.. how long did you practice Mindfulness Meditation and when did you started noticing changes in Mind control? Are you practicing Mindfulness meditation now?

    • @MentalHealthPower
      @MentalHealthPower  4 месяца назад +2

I started with just 5-10 mins of mindfulness meditation to begin with every day (I used a guided meditation on RUclips to start for a few weeks), sometimes I would do concentration based meditation where I would stare at a candle for 5-10 mins and would bring my attention back to it over and over again when my mind would wander. I kept practicing this daily and I noticed after a few months things had improved for me. Some people have said they see improvements after a few weeks so it depends. Yes I still meditate daily, been doing it for over 7 years now.

Please I need help, I once tried to stop and it stopped for like a week it was hard. I started doing some meditation more and some yoga. For that week I was fine, i communicated more and everything felt normal. Then this happened which I think is my trigger(I'm legit crying rn coz I realized it was a trigger after watching this video) so I started talking to this guy online and he was very good to me, patient, understanding legit my dream guy(I tend to overthink to lol and I just realized that he came into my life for me to understand my triggers and why I'm like this) so we started talking and a day later I started thinking about us making up scenarios about us together and all that ( which was bad coz ik I worked so hard to stop the habit, but it started all over again). Now I'm sitting here asking my self, is it because I don't get attention or what is this, mind you this started 6 years ago I was in grade 7.
Idek what to say next I just want someone to help me. And I did try to talk to people about this, and like I didn't know that this thing was a thing and is a risk to my mental health,I don't think any of the people I tried talking to knew either. On the other hand I'm super happy for realising this, coz I've been stuck like this for 6 years and now I know what it is and what caused it.
